  1. 0:00The heat radiating off the Wyoming
  2. 0:02asphalt was thick enough to choke on.
  3. 0:05Boon was just pumping premium into his
  4. 0:07Harley when a dirty, bloodied hand
  5. 0:08clamped onto his leather cut. A
  6. 0:1010-year-old boy trembling violently
  7. 0:12pointed at a retreating semi. "Please,"
  8. 0:16he gasped. "My sisters in that truck."
  9. 0:19The gas station was a decaying relic off
  10. 0:22Interstate 80, the kind of place that
  11. 0:24smelled permanently of spilled diesel,
  12. 0:26stale tobacco, and dust.
  13. 0:29Boon stood by pump number four, watching
  14. 0:31the digital numbers slowly tick upward.
  15. 0:33He was 46 years old, 20 of those spent
  16. 0:36wearing the winged death head of the
  17. 0:37Hell's Angels on his back. His knees
  18. 0:41achd. His lower back was a tight knot of
  19. 0:44muscle, a permanent souvenir of a
  20. 0:46lifetime riding hardtail frames across
  21. 0:48unforgiving highways. He wasn't looking
  22. 0:51for trouble. Trouble usually found him
  23. 0:53just fine without an invitation. Caleb,
  24. 0:56his road brother, was inside the grim
  25. 0:58little convenience store arguing with
  26. 1:00the clerk over the price of lukewarm
  27. 1:02water and beef jerky. Outside the high
  28. 1:05plains wind howled a relentless drone
  29. 1:08that did nothing to cool the brutal July
  30. 1:10heat. Boon wiped a streak of grease from
  31. 1:13his brow and prepared to hang up the
  32. 1:15nozzle. Then came the sound. It was
  33. 1:18small, desperate, the frantic scraping
  34. 1:20of sneakers on gravel. Boon turned just
  35. 1:24as a boy slammed into his side. He was
  36. 1:26small, maybe 9 or 10 years old. His
  37. 1:29knees were torn open. Raw meat and
  38. 1:31gravel ground into the skin. A fresh
  39. 1:34river of blood ran from his nose over
  40. 1:37his lips, dripping onto a faded
  41. 1:39superhero t-shirt. The kid didn't
  42. 1:42hesitate. He didn't care about the
  43. 1:44menacing leather vest, the heavy boots,
  44. 1:46or the jagged scar cutting through
  45. 1:48Boon's grain beard. The boy's small
  46. 1:50dirtcaked fingers grabbed a fistful of
  47. 1:52Boon's leather cut. His grip was
  48. 1:55entirely white knuckled. "My sister."
  49. 1:58The boy choked out. He couldn't catch
  50. 2:00his breath. His chest heaved violently.
  51. 2:04"My sister's in that truck." Boon looked
  52. 2:07down. He saw the sheer unadulterated
  53. 2:10terror in the kid's wide eyes. It wasn't
  54. 2:13the panic of a lost child. It was the
  55. 2:15primal shattering horror of a prey
  56. 2:17animal that had just watched the wolf
  57. 2:19drag away its kin. Boon followed the
  58. 2:22boy's trembling finger. A 100 yards
  59. 2:25away, pulling out of the station's dirt
  60. 2:27overflow lot, was a massive rusted
  61. 2:29Peterbuilt. It was hauling a battered
  62. 2:31white refrigerated trailer. The exhaust
  63. 2:34stack burped a thick cloud of black
  64. 2:36diesel smoke as the driver forcefully
  65. 2:38ground the gears, accelerating toward
  66. 2:39the on-ramp with dangerous urgency.
  67. 2:42Hey," Boon said, his voice a low, grally
  68. 2:45rumble. He put a heavy, calloused hand
  69. 2:48over the boy's trembling fingers, trying
  70. 2:50to detach him gently. "Deep breath, kid.
  71. 2:54What happened?" He grabbed her. The boy
  72. 2:58screamed, his voice cracking, tearing at
  73. 3:00his own throat. "We were walking back
  74. 3:02from the bathroom. He had a knife. He
  75. 3:05threw her in the back. He threw her in
  76. 3:07the back and locked the door. Please."
  77. 3:10Boon didn't believe in much anymore.
  78. 3:12Wives left. Brothers went to prison. The
  79. 3:16human race generally proved itself to be
  80. 3:18fundamentally broken on a daily basis.
  81. 3:20He was a cynic, a man who survived by
  82. 3:23minding his own business and looking out
  83. 3:25for his club. But there was an ironclad
  84. 3:28rule etched into the marrow of his
  85. 3:30bones.
  86. 3:31You don't mess with kids. Boon dropped
  87. 3:34the gas nozzle. It hit the concrete with
  88. 3:36a sharp hollow clatter. Caleb. Boon
  89. 3:40roared. His voice cut through the wind
  90. 3:42loud enough to rattle the glass of the
  91. 3:44storefront. The door swung open. Caleb
  92. 3:48jogged out, dropping a plastic bag of
  93. 3:50snacks. His hand instinctively dropping
  94. 3:52to the heavy fixedblade knife on his
  95. 3:54belt.
  96. 3:55What truck? Boon barked, throwing a leg
  97. 3:59over his customized Harley-Davidson.
  98. 4:01Kidnapping.
  99. 4:03Caleb didn't ask questions. He didn't
  100. 4:05ask for a description or a badge number.
  101. 4:08He took one look at the bleeding kid,
  102. 4:10one look at the departing semi, and
  103. 4:12sprinted for his own bike. Boon turned
  104. 4:15the ignition, and thumbmed the starter.
  105. 4:17The massive V twin engine exploded to
  106. 4:20life a deafening mechanical roar that
  107. 4:22vibrated right through the soles of his
  108. 4:24boots. He looked down at the boy. "Go
  109. 4:27inside. Tell the clerk to call the cops.
  110. 4:30Tell them the Hell's Angels are hunting
  111. 4:31a white Peterbuilt going east on 80.
  112. 4:35No.
  113. 4:37The boy scrambled forward, grabbing the
  114. 4:39heavy chrome of the [ __ ] bar behind
  115. 4:40Boon's seat. I have to go. I'm the only
  116. 4:44one who saw his face. He'll kill her. It
  117. 4:47was a brutally stupid idea. It was
  118. 4:50dangerous, reckless, and entirely
  119. 4:52against the law. Putting a kid on the
  120. 4:55back of a club bike in the middle of a
  121. 4:56high-speed pursuit was madness. But Boon
  122. 4:59looked at the boy's eyes. The kid wasn't
  123. 5:02going to let go. If Boon left him, the
  124. 5:04kid would likely try to run down the
  125. 5:06highway on foot. "What's your name?"
  126. 5:09Boon shouted over the thunder of the
  127. 5:11engine. "Owen, get on Owen. Wrap your
  128. 5:14arms around my ribs. Interlock your
  129. 5:16fingers. If you let go, you die.
  130. 5:20Understand?"
  131. 5:22Owen scrambled up his small legs, barely
  132. 5:24reaching the passenger pegs. He wrapped
  133. 5:27his arms around Boon's thick torso,
  134. 5:29burying his tear streaked face into the
  135. 5:32heavy leather of Boon's club patch. The
  136. 5:34boy's grip was impossibly tight. Boon
  137. 5:37kicked the heavy bike into first gear.
  138. 5:39"Hold on," he dumped the clutch. The
  139. 5:42rear tire shrieked, spinning against the
  140. 5:45gravel and concrete biting down into the
  141. 5:48asphalt. The heavy motorcycle launched
  142. 5:50forward like a missile. Beside him,
  143. 5:53Caleb's bike matched his pace. A dark
  144. 5:55blur of chrome and black leather. They
  145. 5:58tore out of the gas station, blowing
  146. 6:00past a rusted stop sign merging onto the
  147. 6:02fierce, sunbaked expanse of Interstate
  148. 6:0580. The hunt was on. The wind instantly
  149. 6:10turned violently hostile. At 80 mph, the
  150. 6:14hot air stopped feeling like a breeze
  151. 6:16and started feeling like a physical
  152. 6:18assault. Boon leaned forward over the
  153. 6:21handlebars, slicing through the drag,
  154. 6:23feeling the desperate rhythmic thumping
  155. 6:25of Owen's heart against his spine. The
  156. 6:28highway was moderately crowded minivans
  157. 6:30loaded with vacationing families,
  158. 6:33sedans, and local freight. Boon swerved
  159. 6:36through them with surgical, terrifying
  160. 6:38precision. He didn't touch the brakes.
  161. 6:41He just dropped a gear, twisting the
  162. 6:42throttle, feeling the raw, aggressive
  163. 6:44torque of the engine punch them forward.
  164. 6:47The white lines of the highway blurred
  165. 6:49into a solid, dizzying streak. "See it!"
  166. 6:53Caleb shouted, pulling his bike flush
  167. 6:55with Boon's left side. At 90 mph, they
  168. 6:58were riding barely 3 ft apart, perfectly
  169. 7:00synchronized. Boon nodded sharply,
  170. 7:02jutting his chin forward. A mile ahead,
  171. 7:05dominating the right lane, was the
  172. 7:07filthy white rectangle of the
  173. 7:08Peterbuilts trailer. It was moving too
  174. 7:11fast for a rig that size. The driver was
  175. 7:14pushing it past 85, blowing past slower
  176. 7:16cars. the heavy trailer swaying
  177. 7:18dangerously on its axles. Boon signaled
  178. 7:21Caleb with two fingers, pointing at the
  179. 7:22truck, then sweeping his hand to the
  180. 7:24left. Flank him. Caleb nodded, twisting
  181. 7:28his throttle and tearing ahead, swinging
  182. 7:30wide into the passing lane. As they
  183. 7:32closed the gap, the slipstream of the
  184. 7:34massive truck hit them. It was
  185. 7:36turbulent, dirty air. The wind buffeted
  186. 7:39Boon's Harley violently trying to shake
  187. 7:41the front wheel out from under him. Boon
  188. 7:44tightened his grip, his forearms
  189. 7:46hardening like iron cables. He forced
  190. 7:48the bike steady, creeping up on the rear
  191. 7:50bumper of the trailer. He saw the heavy
  192. 7:52steel locking bar on the trailer doors.
  193. 7:55A heavy brass padlock hung from the
  194. 7:57latch.
  195. 7:58"She's in there," Boon thought. The
  196. 8:01image of a little girl trapped in the
  197. 8:03pitch black freezing rattling box made a
  198. 8:06cold, pure rage flare up in his chest.
  199. 8:09Boon pulled out from behind the trailer,
  200. 8:11drifting into the right side blind spot
  201. 8:13of the cab. He wanted to look at the
  202. 8:15driver. He matched the truck's speed, 92
  203. 8:18mph, running the shoulder. Gravel and
  204. 8:21discarded tire treads pinged violently
  205. 8:24against his heavy leather boots and the
  206. 8:26bike's engine guard. Boon glared up into
  207. 8:29the cab. The side window was tinted, but
  208. 8:32through the glass, Boon saw the
  209. 8:34silhouette of a heavy set man. The
  210. 8:36driver glanced at his oversized side
  211. 8:39mirror. For a split second, the driver
  212. 8:41made eye contact with the scarred biker
  213. 8:43riding his flank. Boon saw the driver's
  214. 8:46eyes widen in sheer panic. The driver
  215. 8:49saw the kid on the back. He saw the
  216. 8:51death head patch. He knew exactly what
  217. 8:54was happening. The driver didn't slow
  218. 8:57down. He didn't pull over. Instead, he
  219. 9:00yanked the heavy steering wheel hard to
  220. 9:02the right. The massive Peterbuilt
  221. 9:04suddenly violently swerved onto the
  222. 9:06shoulder 50,000 lbs of steel and rubber,
  223. 9:10actively trying to crush Boon and the
  224. 9:12boy against the rusted metal guard rail.
  225. 9:15Hold tight, Boon roared. He didn't
  226. 9:18break. Breaking would have pulled them
  227. 9:20under the rear tires of the trailer.
  228. 9:23Instead, Boon pinned the throttle. The
  229. 9:26Harley screamed, shooting forward
  230. 9:27through the rapidly closing gap between
  231. 9:29the truck's massive front tires and the
  232. 9:31guard rail. The heavy steel of the
  233. 9:34truck's front bumper missed Boon's rear
  234. 9:36tire by less than 3 in. Sparks showered
  235. 9:40over the highway as the truck's bumper
  236. 9:42scraped the metal guard rail, chewing up
  237. 9:44the steel in a deafening shriek of
  238. 9:46tearing metal. Boon shot out ahead of
  239. 9:49the truck, his heart hammering against
  240. 9:51his ribs. He swerved back into the
  241. 9:53center lane, putting distance between
  242. 9:55himself and the suicidal driver. Behind
  243. 9:58them, the truck overcorrected the
  244. 10:00trailer. fishtailed tires smoking
  245. 10:02violently as they skidded across the
  246. 10:05asphalt. A blue sedan in the left lane
  247. 10:08slammed on its brakes to avoid the
  248. 10:09swinging trailer, sending a cascade of
  249. 10:12panicked honking into the wind. The
  250. 10:14truck recovered the driver shifting
  251. 10:16down, clearly determined to run through
  252. 10:18anything in his path. Caleb pulled up
  253. 10:21next to Boon. Caleb's face was an
  254. 10:23absolute mask of cold murder. He reached
  255. 10:26down to the heavy leather saddle bag on
  256. 10:28his bike, his hand resting near
  257. 10:30something hidden. Boon vigorously shook
  258. 10:33his head. No shooting. Not at this
  259. 10:36speed. Not with a hostage in the box.
  260. 10:39Caleb nodded. With his left hand, he
  261. 10:41pulled a burner phone from his chest
  262. 10:43pocket. He hit a single speed dial
  263. 10:45button holding the phone against his
  264. 10:47helmet's built-in comm's unit. He didn't
  265. 10:50have to say much, a few coordinates, a
  266. 10:53direction. They were 20 m outside of
  267. 10:55Cheyenne. That was club territory. For
  268. 10:58the next 10 minutes, it was a high-speed
  269. 11:00game of psychological warfare. Boon and
  270. 11:04Caleb rode in a staggered formation in
  271. 11:06front of the truck, refusing to let the
  272. 11:08driver accelerate while maintaining just
  273. 11:10enough distance to keep from being
  274. 11:11flattened if the truck suddenly lunged.
  275. 11:14The driver continuously laid on the
  276. 11:16deafening air horn, a continuous,
  277. 11:18terrifying blast that echoed across the
  278. 11:20planes. Owen's grip hadn't loosened.
  279. 11:23Boon could feel the boy trembling, but
  280. 11:25he hadn't made a sound since they merged
  281. 11:27onto the highway. Then, in Boon's
  282. 11:29vibrating rear view mirror, he saw it.
  283. 11:32Rising up from the horizon behind them,
  284. 11:34cutting through the heat distortion of
  285. 11:36the asphalt were five single headlights,
  286. 11:39then 10, then 20. They weren't police
  287. 11:42sirens. They were the distinct rumbling,
  288. 11:45guttural thunder of heavily modified
  289. 11:48American V twins. Boon smiled, a grim,
  290. 11:50humorless showing of teeth beneath his
  291. 11:52beard. Within 2 minutes, the pack
  292. 11:55arrived. 25 riders from the Cheyenne
  293. 11:58chapter wearing the same patches, the
  294. 12:00same leather. They swarmed the
  295. 12:01interstate like a hive of angry hornets.
  296. 12:04They didn't use sirens. They didn't ask
  297. 12:06for permission. They completely
  298. 12:08swallowed the highway. Two riders
  299. 12:10flanked the left side of the truck. Two
  300. 12:12flanked the right. 10 riders filled the
  301. 12:15lanes behind the trailer, forcing all
  302. 12:16civilian traffic to back completely off.
  303. 12:19Boon and Caleb maintained the front.
  304. 12:21They had built a rolling, impenetrable
  305. 12:23cage of flesh, bone, and steel. The
  306. 12:26Peterbuilt was entirely trapped. The
  307. 12:28driver leaned out his window, his face
  308. 12:30pale, screaming, something lost to the
  309. 12:33wind swerving slightly, but there was
  310. 12:35nowhere to go. If he hit one bike, the
  311. 12:38rest would tear him to pieces before the
  312. 12:40rig even came to a stop. Boon looked at
  313. 12:43Caleb. Caleb raised his right fist into
  314. 12:45the air, holding it steady. The signal.
  315. 12:49All 27 riders in perfect terrifying
  316. 12:52unison began to steadily roll off their
  317. 12:54throttles. The deceleration was
  318. 12:56agonizing. It wasn't a sudden cinematic
  319. 12:59slam of the brakes. It was a slow,
  320. 13:02deliberate strangulation. 80 mph bled
  321. 13:05into 70. The Peterbuilt's massive air
  322. 13:08horn blared continuously. a deafening
  323. 13:11wall of sound that rattled the fillings
  324. 13:13in Boone's teeth. The driver was
  325. 13:15desperate riding his clutch, trying to
  326. 13:17surge forward, but there was nowhere to
  327. 13:20go. If he bumped the riders in front, he
  328. 13:22would undoubtedly crush them, but the 20
  329. 13:24riders flanking his sides and rear
  330. 13:26immediately tightened the box. They
  331. 13:29drifted within inches of the truck's
  332. 13:30enormous spinning tires. The threat was
  333. 13:33explicitly clear. Run them over and you
  334. 13:36will not survive the next 5 minutes. 70
  335. 13:39bled into 50. The smell of burnt rubber
  336. 13:42and overheating brakes saturated the
  337. 13:44heavy summer air. The truck driver
  338. 13:46slammed his fist against the steering
  339. 13:48wheel, his face a purple mask of panic
  340. 13:51visible through the windshield. He tried
  341. 13:53to swerve onto the gravel shoulder,
  342. 13:55aiming for the ditch. Caleb anticipated
  343. 13:57it. He cut his Harley to the right,
  344. 14:00putting his own body directly between
  345. 14:02the massive chrome grill of the rig and
  346. 14:04the safety of the ditch. Caleb didn't
  347. 14:07flinch. He just stared the driver down
  348. 14:09through his aviator sunglasses, daring
  349. 14:12the man to commit vehicular homicide in
  350. 14:14front of 26 witnesses.
  351. 14:17The driver broke. He lacked the stomach
  352. 14:19for actual murder when the victims were
  353. 14:21staring right back at him. He stomped on
  354. 14:24the air brakes. The sound was
  355. 14:26apocalyptic. The heavy brakes shrieked
  356. 14:28like slaughtered pigs. Metal grinding
  357. 14:31violently against metal. The trailer
  358. 14:33fishtailed violently, shaking left and
  359. 14:35right, threatening to jack knife. A
  360. 14:38massive cloud of white smoke erupted
  361. 14:40from the truck's rear dels as the rubber
  362. 14:42locked up, leaving thick black scars
  363. 14:44across the interstate. Boon smoothly
  364. 14:47feathered his brakes, keeping perfectly
  365. 14:49in sync with the stopping rig. 40 20 10
  366. 14:54The massive semi shuddered, hissed, and
  367. 14:57finally died on the hot asphalt of the
  368. 14:59right lane and shoulder. Silence slammed
  369. 15:03down on the highway. Civilian traffic
  370. 15:06had completely stopped a/4 mile back,
  371. 15:08entirely blocked by the rear guard of
  372. 15:10the Cheyenne chapter. The wind howled
  373. 15:13across the planes, whistling through the
  374. 15:15hot engine fins of the motorcycles. The
  375. 15:18only other sound was the heavy rhythmic
  376. 15:20tink tink tink of cooling metal. Boon
  377. 15:23kicked down his heavy steel kickstand.
  378. 15:25He reached behind him and gently but
  379. 15:27firmly began prying Owen's rigid white
  380. 15:30knuckled fingers off his leather vest.
  381. 15:32The boy was frozen. His eyes were wide,
  382. 15:35fixed on the massive white trailer.
  383. 15:38"Owen," Boon said, his voice dropping an
  384. 15:41octave, losing the roar he needed for
  385. 15:43the highway. "Look at me." The boy
  386. 15:46blinked, his gaze, snapping to Boon's
  387. 15:48scarred face. "Stay exactly right here.
  388. 15:52Do not move from this bike. understand."
  389. 15:55Owen nodded, swallowing hard. Boon
  390. 15:58stepped off the Harley. Around him, 26
  391. 16:01engines were killed in a rolling wave.
  392. 16:04The synchronized sound of heavy leather
  393. 16:06boots hitting the pavement echoed like a
  394. 16:08military cadence. No one shouted. No one
  395. 16:11drew weapons. They didn't need to. The
  396. 16:13sheer overwhelming menace of two dozen
  397. 16:16scarred, heavily tattooed men moving
  398. 16:18with absolute coordinated purpose was
  399. 16:20terrifying enough. They swarmed the cab.
  400. 16:23Boon walked to the driver's side door.
  401. 16:26Caleb was already there, joined by a
  402. 16:27towering bearded rider named Dutch,
  403. 16:30whose arms were thick as tree trunks.
  404. 16:33Inside the cab, the driver scrambled
  405. 16:35backward over the center console, wildly
  406. 16:37punching the electronic locks. He
  407. 16:40grabbed a heavy steel tire iron from the
  408. 16:42passenger footwell, brandishing it like
  409. 16:44a club. He was a thick, sweaty man in a
  410. 16:46stained undershirt, his eyes darting
  411. 16:49frantically like a trapped rat. I'll
  412. 16:51kill you. The driver screamed through
  413. 16:53the glass, his voice muffled. I called
  414. 16:56the cops. You biker trash. I'm defending
  415. 16:59myself.
  416. 17:00Dutch didn't blink. He reached into his
  417. 17:03deep saddle bag and produced a heavy
  418. 17:05two-ft steel ballpeen hammer. He didn't
  419. 17:08wind up. He didn't shout a warning. He
  420. 17:11simply swung the heavy steel head
  421. 17:13directly into the center of the driver's
  422. 17:15side window. The tempered glass exploded
  423. 17:17inward in a glittering violent wave. The
  424. 17:20driver shrieked, throwing his arms up to
  425. 17:22protect his face from the shower of
  426. 17:24glass shards. Before he could lower
  427. 17:26them, Caleb's hand shot through the
  428. 17:28shattered window. He grabbed a fistful
  429. 17:30of the driver's greasy hair, violently
  430. 17:33jerking the man's head toward the door
  431. 17:35frame. Dutch reached in, popped the
  432. 17:37lock, and yanked the heavy door open.
  433. 17:39They didn't ask him to step out. Dutch
  434. 17:42grabbed the driver by the collar of his
  435. 17:44shirt and the belt of his jeans, hauling
  436. 17:46the 250lb man out of the cab like a sack
  437. 17:49of garbage. The driver hit the pavement
  438. 17:52hard, the breath exploding from his
  439. 17:54lungs in a wet gasp. He tried to swing
  440. 17:56the tire iron. Boon stepped forward,
  441. 17:59bringing the heavy steel toe of his
  442. 18:01riding boot down squarely on the man's
  443. 18:03wrist. The bone didn't snap, but the
  444. 18:06tendons crunched. The driver howled,
  445. 18:08dropping the iron. Instantly, five
  446. 18:11bikers formed a tight circle around the
  447. 18:12man on the ground. Please.
  448. 18:16The driver sobbed blood mixing with
  449. 18:18sweat on his face. He curled into a
  450. 18:20fetal position, instinctively protecting
  451. 18:23his head.
  452. 18:25I didn't do anything. It's a
  453. 18:27misunderstanding. I thought the kid was
  454. 18:28stealing from my rig.
  455. 18:31Boon looked down at him. The sheer
  456. 18:33pathetic cowardice of the man made
  457. 18:35Boon's stomach turn. Predators always
  458. 18:39played the victim the second they were
  459. 18:41outmatched.
  460. 18:43Where is the key to the back? Boon
  461. 18:45asked. His voice was flat. Dead. I don't
  462. 18:50have it. The man cried. I swear to God
  463. 18:53it's a company lock. Caleb drew the
  464. 18:56heavy fixed blade knife from his belt.
  465. 18:59The sunlight caught the matte black
  466. 19:00steel. He knelt down, pressing the flat
  467. 19:03of the blade against the driver's
  468. 19:04sweating cheek.
  469. 19:06I'm not the police, Caleb whispered his
  470. 19:09tone conversational.
  471. 19:11I don't need a warrant. I don't care
  472. 19:13about your rights. I'm going to ask you
  473. 19:15one time. Where is the key? The driver
  474. 19:18sobbed a pathetic high-pitched sound.
  475. 19:22Ignition ring. The small brass one.
  476. 19:26Please don't cut me.
  477. 19:28Boon nodded at Dutch. Dutch reached into
  478. 19:31the cab, ripped the keys from the
  479. 19:33ignition, and tossed the heavy ring down
  480. 19:35to Boon. Boon caught it out of the air.
  481. 19:38"Keep him on the ground," Boon ordered
  482. 19:41the circle of men. "No one kills him.
  483. 19:44Cops are on the way." Boon turned his
  484. 19:46back on the whimpering driver. He walked
  485. 19:48past the massive tires of the rig, his
  486. 19:51heavy boots crunching on the loose
  487. 19:52gravel of the shoulder. He looked back
  488. 19:55at his bike. Owen was still sitting
  489. 19:57there gripping the [ __ ] bar, his small
  490. 19:59body trembling violently. "Come here,
  491. 20:02kid," Boon called out. Owen scrambled
  492. 20:05off the bike. He ran to Boon's side,
  493. 20:08grabbing the fabric of Boon's jeans,
  494. 20:09hiding behind the massive biker's leg as
  495. 20:12they approached the rear of the trailer.
  496. 20:14The back of the refrigerated trailer was
  497. 20:16a massive scarred wall of white
  498. 20:18corrugated metal caked with highway
  499. 20:20grime and the crushed remnants of dead
  500. 20:23insects. The refrigeration unit mounted
  501. 20:25on the cab hummed with a violent
  502. 20:27mechanical vibration, fighting the July
  503. 20:30heat to keep the inside at a steady
  504. 20:32freezing temperature. Boon stood before
  505. 20:35the heavy steel locking bar. He looked
  506. 20:38down at the brass key resting in his
  507. 20:39callous palm. He had lived a hard,
  508. 20:42unforgiving life. He had seen the
  509. 20:44absolute worst of what humanity had to
  510. 20:46offer. He had seen violence that would
  511. 20:48break a normal man's mind. But as his
  512. 20:51hand rested on that freezing metal
  513. 20:53handle, Boon felt a cold spike of pure,
  514. 20:56unadulterated dread pierce his chest. He
  515. 21:00didn't know what was behind these doors.
  516. 21:02He didn't know if they had made it in
  517. 21:04time. He glanced down at Owen. The boy
  518. 21:07was staring at the doors, his breath
  519. 21:09catching in his throat, fresh tears
  520. 21:11cutting paths through the grease on his
  521. 21:13cheeks. "Brace yourself, kid," Boon
  522. 21:17muttered softly. He slid the key in. It
  523. 21:21turned with a heavy metallic click. Boon
  524. 21:23pulled the lock free, tossed it onto the
  525. 21:25hot asphalt, and yanked the heavy right
  526. 21:27door open. A thick cloud of white
  527. 21:30condensation poured out of the trailer
  528. 21:32rolling over their leather boots as the
  529. 21:34freezing internal air violently collided
  530. 21:36with the 100°ree Wyoming heat. The smell
  531. 21:39hit them next to harsh chemical scent of
  532. 21:42freon damp cardboard and raw biting
  533. 21:44cold. The inside was pitch black,
  534. 21:47illuminated only by the harsh sunlight
  535. 21:49spilling across the metal floor. Boon
  536. 21:52stepped up onto the lip of the trailer.
  537. 21:55He drew a heavy tactical flashlight from
  538. 21:57his belt, clicking it on. The blinding
  539. 21:59white beam cut through the swirling mist
  540. 22:02of condensation sweeping past half empty
  541. 22:04wooden pallets and shrink wrapped boxes.
  542. 22:07He swept the beam to the very back left
  543. 22:10corner. The light caught a flash of
  544. 22:12bright pink fabric. Boon kept the beam
  545. 22:15steady. Huddled tightly in the corner,
  546. 22:18her knees pulled flush against her
  547. 22:20chest, was a little girl. She couldn't
  548. 22:22have been more than 7 years old. Her
  549. 22:25pink summer dress was smeared with black
  550. 22:27grease. She was shivering violently, her
  551. 22:30lips tinged blue. Her eyes were squeezed
  552. 22:33tightly shut, her small hands clamping
  553. 22:36over her ears as if trying to block out
  554. 22:38the terror of the world. She looked up
  555. 22:40blinded by the light. When she saw Boon,
  556. 22:44a massive scarred man draped in heavy
  557. 22:46leather and death head patches, she let
  558. 22:49out a sharp, terrified whimper. She
  559. 22:52scrambled backward, pressing her small
  560. 22:53back flat against the freezing metal
  561. 22:55wall. Boon instantly lowered the
  562. 22:58flashlight, pointing the beam directly
  563. 23:00at the floor. He slowly raised his empty
  564. 23:02hand, stepping back to the edge of the
  565. 23:04doors. He knew what he looked like. He
  566. 23:07wasn't the face of salvation to a
  567. 23:09terrified child. Owen Boon said quietly
  568. 23:13stepping aside. The boy scrambled up
  569. 23:15onto the metal deck. He didn't hesitate.
  570. 23:18He didn't care about the freezing air or
  571. 23:20the darkness.
  572. 23:22Chloe. Owen screamed. The little girl
  573. 23:25flinched. Then her eyes shot open. Owen.
  574. 23:30She whispered her voice a fragile broken
  575. 23:32thread. She scrambled to her feet,
  576. 23:34stumbling over the wooden slats. Owen
  577. 23:37ran to her. They collided in the center
  578. 23:39of the dark trailer, a tangle of small,
  579. 23:41shaking limbs. They dropped to their
  580. 23:43knees on the freezing metal floor,
  581. 23:45holding on to each other with a
  582. 23:47desperate, crushing grip. Khloe buried
  583. 23:50her face in her brother's bloody
  584. 23:52superhero shirt, sobbing uncontrollably.
  585. 23:55Owen wrapped his arms around her head,
  586. 23:57rocking her back and forth. I got you.
  587. 24:00Owen kept repeating his voice cracking.
  588. 24:03I got you. I didn't leave.
  589. 24:06Boon stood at the edge of the doors,
  590. 24:08watching them. A heavy, suffocating knot
  591. 24:11tightened in his throat. He swallowed
  592. 24:14hard, aggressively, blinking away a
  593. 24:16sudden stinging in his eyes. He turned
  594. 24:18away, stepping down onto the hot
  595. 24:20asphalt, putting his broad back to the
  596. 24:22trailer to give them privacy. Caleb
  597. 24:24walked up, wiping a streak of the
  598. 24:26driver's blood off his leather glove. He
  599. 24:28glanced into the trailer. Caleb's
  600. 24:31hardened face softened for a fraction of
  601. 24:33a second. He pulled off his heavy
  602. 24:35leather club jacket, stepped up, and
  603. 24:37quietly draped it over the shivering
  604. 24:39little girl before stepping back down.
  605. 24:42He looked at Boon, and nodded once, a
  606. 24:45silent acknowledgement. Then the whale
  607. 24:47of sirens cut through the heavy air.
  608. 24:50Down the interstate, pushing through the
  609. 24:52blockade of stopped civilian traffic, a
  610. 24:54fleet of Wyoming State Highway Patrol
  611. 24:56cruisers tore down the shoulder. Their
  612. 24:59light bars flashed blinding red and blue
  613. 25:01against the stark desert landscape. Six
  614. 25:04cruisers moving fast.
  615. 25:07"Here comes the headache," Dutch
  616. 25:09muttered, stepping away from the
  617. 25:10groaning, bloody driver on the ground.
  618. 25:12The cruisers slammed into park, angling
  619. 25:15their vehicles to block the highway
  620. 25:16completely. Doors flew open. Troopers
  621. 25:19spilled out their hands, resting heavily
  622. 25:21on the grips of their holstered
  623. 25:23sidearms. The sight in front of them was
  624. 25:25a law enforcement nightmare 27.
  625. 25:29Hell's Angels surrounding a brutally
  626. 25:31beaten civilian, a smashed commercial
  627. 25:33truck, and an open trailer. "Back away
  628. 25:36from the vehicle," the lead trooper
  629. 25:38bellowed over his vehicle's PA system.
  630. 25:41"Keep your hands where I can see them."
  631. 25:43The bikers didn't scatter. They didn't
  632. 25:45panic. They simply stood their ground,
  633. 25:48calmly, raising their hands, showing
  634. 25:50empty palms. The lead trooper, a tall
  635. 25:52man with a severe gray mustache, marched
  636. 25:55forward. He locked eyes with Boon. He
  637. 25:58recognized the patch. He recognized the
  638. 26:00man. "Boon," the trooper said tightly,
  639. 26:04his hand still gripping his sidearm.
  640. 26:07"What the hell is this?" Boon didn't
  641. 26:09lower his hands. He jutted his chin
  642. 26:11toward the whimpering mass of the truck
  643. 26:13driver. "Citizens arrest trooper.
  644. 26:17You smashed his window and dragged him
  645. 26:19out." The trooper countered, eyeing the
  646. 26:21shattered glass. "Looks like aggravated
  647. 26:24assault.
  648. 26:26He was resisting, Caleb offered
  649. 26:28unhelpfully. The trooper glared at
  650. 26:31Caleb. Give me one good reason I don't
  651. 26:33arrest every single one of you right
  652. 26:35now. Boon didn't argue. He simply turned
  653. 26:37his head and nodded toward the open
  654. 26:39doors of the trailer. The trooper
  655. 26:42frowned. He cautiously stepped past the
  656. 26:44line of bikers unspooling his
  657. 26:46flashlight. Owen and Kloe were sitting
  658. 26:48on the edge of the trailer deck now. The
  659. 26:50little girl was wrapped tightly in
  660. 26:52Caleb's massive jacket. Owen had his arm
  661. 26:55firmly around her shoulders. They both
  662. 26:57looked at the police officer with wide,
  663. 26:59exhausted eyes. The trooper froze, the
  664. 27:02tension visibly drained out of his
  665. 27:04shoulders. His hand slowly dropped away
  666. 27:06from his sidearm. He looked at the kids,
  667. 27:09then looked down at the bruised,
  668. 27:10bleeding driver on the pavement. The
  669. 27:13trooper's expression hardened into
  670. 27:15something far more dangerous. He clicked
  671. 27:18his radio.
  672. 27:20Dispatch suspect in custody. send two
  673. 27:22ambulances immediately. We have a
  674. 27:24recovered juvenile. He turned back to
  675. 27:26Boon. Cops rarely thanked bikers. And he
  676. 27:29didn't start today, but he gave Boon a
  677. 27:32long, steady look, subtly nodding his
  678. 27:34head. We'll take it from here, the
  679. 27:37trooper said quietly. I suggest you and
  680. 27:40your associates clear the interstate
  681. 27:41before my captain arrives. He's a
  682. 27:43stickler for paperwork.
  683. 27:45Understood, Boon said. Boon walked back
  684. 27:48to the trailer, stopping in front of the
  685. 27:50kids. Kloe shrank back slightly, but
  686. 27:53Owen held his ground. The boy looked up
  687. 27:56at the scarred biker. The terror was
  688. 27:58gone from Owen's eyes, replaced by a
  689. 28:00profound, exhaustionfueled gratitude.
  690. 28:03"You promised,"
  691. 28:05Owen whispered. "I did," Boon replied.
  692. 28:10He reached out gently, tapping his
  693. 28:12knuckles against the boy's shoulder.
  694. 28:14"You're a brave kid, Owen. Braver than
  695. 28:17most men I know. Take care of your
  696. 28:20sister." Boon turned and walked back to
  697. 28:22his Harley. Around him, the synchronized
  698. 28:24thunder of 27 heavy V twin engines
  699. 28:28roared to life, drowning out the sirens.
  700. 28:30Boon threw his leg over the saddle,
  701. 28:32dropping it into first gear. He didn't
  702. 28:35look back. He let out the clutch,
  703. 28:37twisting the throttle. The pack merged
  704. 28:40back onto the highway, a dark roaring
  705. 28:42tide of leather and chrome disappearing
  706. 28:44into the shimmering heat of the Wyoming
  707. 28:47plains. What a ride. From a desperate
  708. 28:50plea at a dusty gas station to a
