- 0:00My sister told our parents I was
- 0:01homeless and sleeping in my car. I own
- 0:02the house next door to them. My dad
- 0:04knocked on my car window at 5:40 a.m.
- 0:05holding a thermos and an envelope of
- 0:07cash. And the first thing he asked was
- 0:08whether I'd eaten. He'd been crying. He
- 0:10was standing in his slippers in the
- 0:11driveway next to his own, my driveway.
- 0:12I'd owned that house for 4 months. He
- 0:14had no idea. "It's $300," he said,
- 0:16pushing the envelope through the gap,
- 0:17"on top of the $800 we send through your
- 0:19sister every month. I know you won't
- 0:20take it from us directly," Kendra
- 0:21explained. I'd never gotten a dollar
- 0:22from Kendra in my life. Suddenly, a year
- 0:24of weird phone calls made sense. Mom
- 0:25ending every single one by asking if I
- 0:27was warm. "Dad," I said, "I'm not
- 0:28homeless. I own this house." He looked
- 0:30at the dumpster, the scaffolding, the
- 0:31plastic taped over the windows. Then he
- 0:32patted my hand through the glass like I
- 0:34was seven. "Kendra said you'd have a
- 0:35story ready," he whispered. "She says
- 0:36addicts always do. I've seen the
- 0:38pictures, kiddo. I'm a union
- 0:39electrician. I get drug tested every
- 0:40month." Here's what nobody knew. I'd
- 0:41spent 6 years wiring hospitals in
- 0:43Phoenix. When Dad had his bypass last
- 0:44spring, I paid his $19,400 hospital bill
- 0:47anonymously because that man would never
- 0:49take money from his kids. Then Mr.
- 0:50Okafor next door passed. So, I bought
- 0:51his house and quietly transferred home.
- 0:53I was going to finish it by Mom's
- 0:54birthday and knock on their door as
- 0:55their new neighbor. Copper thieves hit
- 0:56the basement twice, so I bolted a camera
- 0:58to the porch and started sleeping in my
- 0:59car it. Kendra must have recognized the
- 1:01car. A year of lies was parked 40 feet
- 1:03from Mom's kitchen. So, she went for one
- 1:04last payday. "Sunday after church," Dad
- 1:06said, "Kendra found a program. Serenity
- 1:08Pines, 60 days, $24,000 due that day.
- 1:11We're cashing out my retirement. Please,
- 1:12just come." I could have argued.
- 1:14Instead, I said I'd be there. I only
- 1:15asked him one thing. "Don't tell Kendra
- 1:16we talked." My sister had spent a year
- 1:18building a stage. I decided to let her
- 1:19finish it. That night I looked up
- 1:20Serenity Pines. No state license, a
- 1:22website 6 weeks old, and the LLC behind
- 1:24it was registered to Wade Pruitt,
- 1:25Kendra's husband. She hadn't turned me
- 1:26into a homeless addict to hurt me. She'd
- 1:28turned me into a side hustle. Then I
- 1:29pulled 9 weeks of porch footage. October
- 1:313rd, 2:51 a.m. Exactly what I needed.
- 1:33Sunday, my parents' living room looked
- 1:34like a funeral. Folding chairs, tissues
- 1:36on the coffee table, Pastor Dale, half
- 1:37of Mom's Bible study, Wade, and a guy
- 1:39named Clint wearing a lanyard that said
- 1:40certified interventionist. Next to the
- 1:42tissues sat a $24,000 cashier's check.
- 1:44Kendra read her letter first. Her voice
- 1:45cracked in all the right places. "When
- 1:47Dad's hospital bill came, I'm the one
- 1:48who found a way to pay it. Where were
- 1:49you?" Pastor Dale nodded. Mom sobbed.
- 1:51"Can I read mine?" I said. "It's for
- 1:52Kendra." I laid the deed on the coffee
- 1:53table. I own the house next door. Then
- 1:55my bank statement. One line highlighted.
- 1:57$19,400 to St. Luke's Hospital. That was
- 1:59me, Dad. Then 14 months of statements
- 2:01without one transfer from Kendra, and 14
- 2:03clean drug tests stapled to the back.
- 2:04They're twisting everything, Kendra
- 2:06snapped. I told you they'd have a story.
- 2:07You did, I said. Here's yours. I cast
- 2:09the video to Dad's TV. Kendra under my
- 2:11porch light at 2:51 a.m. pulling empty
- 2:13mini vodka bottles out of a Target bag,
- 2:14scattering them around my tire, and
- 2:16photographing me asleep through the
- 2:17window. The same pictures she'd shown my
- 2:18parents. Nobody breathed. Pastor Dave
- 2:20took off his glasses. I slid one more
- 2:22page across the table. Serenity Pines
- 2:23LLC, registered agent Wade Pruitt. Wade
- 2:25stared at his own name like it belonged
- 2:27to a stranger. Kendra, why is my name on
- 2:28that? Clint started packing his
- 2:30brochures one at a time, very quietly.
- 2:31Dad picked up the check and tore it in
- 2:32half, then in half again. Wade took the
- 2:34car keys out of Kendra's purse. Don't
- 2:35come home tonight. The front door shut
- 2:36behind him. Mom stared out the window at
- 2:38my house. Every phone call, she
- 2:39whispered, I asked if you were warm. I
- 2:41was, Mom. I was 40 ft away. Kendra's
- 2:43mascara was running. Where am I supposed
- 2:44to go? I tossed her my car keys.
- 2:45Driveway next door. The back seat folds
- 2:47flat. It's warmer than it looks.
