- 0:00My quietest student made the class bully
- 0:01cry with a single sentence, and it was
- 0:02so good I pretended I didn't hear it.
- 0:04From the very first day of school, I
- 0:05knew this kid, Cade, was going to be the
- 0:06one who tested my patience all year. He
- 0:08walked in like he owned the building,
- 0:09gym shark hoodie, a prime bottle in each
- 0:11hand, and that look guys get when
- 0:12they've watched too many mindset videos
- 0:13at 2:00 a.m. Within 10 minutes, he'd
- 0:15called two kids NPCs and informed the
- 0:17entire class that grades were for betas
- 0:19because his dad was going to set him up
- 0:20the second he graduated. I'd already
- 0:21heard about him from the teachers who'd
- 0:23survived his older brother, so I knew
- 0:24exactly what I was walking into. Cade
- 0:26didn't do bullying the loud, obvious
- 0:27way. He did it with that fake friendly
- 0:29grin, the kind where he would compliment
- 0:30you right before gutting you. He'd tell
- 0:31a girl her outfit was brave. He'd tell
- 0:33the bigger kid in the back that he was
- 0:34built for comfort, not speed, then laugh
- 0:36like they were in on it together. Every
- 0:37single day it was something, mewing
- 0:39jokes, looks maxing tips nobody asked
- 0:40for, ranking all the boys in class on
- 0:42some scale he made up in his head. And
- 0:44every time I tried to shut it down, he'd
- 0:45hit me with, "Relax, it's just banter,
- 0:47miss," like I was the one being
- 0:48dramatic. His dad somehow made it worse.
- 0:49He showed up to one parent meeting
- 0:51wearing a watch worth more than my car
- 0:52and spent the whole time telling me Cade
- 0:54was a leader, not a follower, and that I
- 0:55should be channeling that energy, not
- 0:57punishing it. When I mentioned Cade was
- 0:58failing two of his classes, he actually
- 1:00laughed and said school was just a
- 1:01filter for the people who'll end up
- 1:02working for him. So now I understood
- 1:04exactly where the kid learned it. The
- 1:05problem was, a kid like Cade always
- 1:07needs a target, and that semester, he
- 1:08found one. There was this quiet kid
- 1:10named Milo who sat in the second row,
- 1:11glasses, hoodie sleeves always pulled
- 1:13over his hands, headphones around his
- 1:14neck that I never once saw him plug into
- 1:16anything. He had the highest average in
- 1:17my class, and I'm not sure I'd heard him
- 1:18say a single full sentence the entire
- 1:20year. He'd just nod, hand in flawless
- 1:22work, and disappear, which to Cade was
- 1:23basically a personal insult. It started
- 1:25small. Cade would knock Milo's pencil
- 1:26case off his desk by accident. Then he
- 1:28started calling him Wi-Fi because, in
- 1:30his words, Milo had no signal, no
- 1:31personality, just kind of there. The
- 1:33other boys ate it up every time, but
- 1:34Milo never reacted, not once. He'd just
- 1:36pick his stuff up off the floor and keep
- 1:37working, which somehow only made Cade
- 1:39try harder the next day. I figured the
- 1:40fix was to make them work together. One
- 1:41of the older teachers swore by forcing
- 1:43kids into the same project until they
- 1:44humanized each other, and we had a group
- 1:45assignment coming up anyway, so I put
- 1:47them in the same group. Looking back,
- 1:48that was a mistake. Within 5 minutes,
- 1:50Cade was leaned back in his chair
- 1:51filming himself, narrating to his phone
- 1:52about how he was going to carry the
- 1:53whole group while Milo silently did
- 1:55every single part of the actual work.
- 1:56When I came over, Cade didn't even lower
- 1:58the phone. "We're locked in, miss. Don't
- 1:59even worry. Milo's my little assistant."
- 2:01The two guys next to him laughed. Milo
- 2:02just kept writing. I said, "Then maybe
- 2:03the assistant takes a break and you show
- 2:05me your half." Cade smirked. "Nah, he
- 2:06likes it. It's the most attention he's
- 2:07gotten his whole life. Right, Wi-Fi?"
- 2:09And that was the one that finally
- 2:10landed. I watched Milo's pen stop
- 2:11moving. His jaw went tight, and for the
- 2:13first time all year, I saw his eyes go
- 2:14glassy, like he was about 2 seconds from
- 2:16breaking in front of the entire class.
- 2:17Everyone at the table was staring at
- 2:18him, waiting. And something about it,
- 2:20this kid who never bothered a soul
- 2:21getting torn apart for being good at the
- 2:22one thing that was his, just snapped
- 2:24something in me. So, I walked over and
- 2:25said it loud enough for the whole class
- 2:26to hear. "Knock it off, Cade. Milo works
- 2:28harder than anyone in this room. And for
- 2:29all your talk about your dad's money,
- 2:30for all you know, this is the kid who
- 2:31ends up signing your paycheck one day."
- 2:33Cade laughed right in my face. "Him? My
- 2:35guy, I'm going to be running my own
- 2:36empire. I'll have people like him
- 2:37bringing me my coffee." And that's when
- 2:38Milo, who had not said one word all
- 2:40year, finally looked up from his paper.
- 2:41Calm as anything, he goes, "That's okay.
- 2:43I hear the guys who peak in high school
- 2:44always leave the best tips." The room
- 2:45went dead silent for half a second, then
- 2:47it absolutely exploded. Cade just sat
- 2:49there blinking while the same two guys
- 2:50who'd been laughing with him were now
- 2:51wheezing at him. He didn't even make it
- 2:53to the bell. Cade grabbed his Prime and
- 2:54walked out.
