- 0:05I iso, writer of books for young people.
- 0:08I'll be sharing with you My puppy has a
- 0:10motorcycle, illustrated [music] by Zeke,
- 0:13and written by myself. My puppy has a
- 0:16motorcycle from him. I've learned words
- 0:18like carburetor and [music] ginho, drill
- 0:20and dedication. When I hear his great
- 0:23truck pull into our driveway, I run
- 0:24[music] outside with both of our
- 0:26helmets.
- 0:28My puppy the carpenter is covered in
- 0:30sawdust and smells like a hard day at
- 0:32work. His hands are rough from building
- 0:34homes every day. His job since he first
- 0:36arrived in this country. But even though
- 0:38he comes home tired, he always has time
- 0:40for me. When our city is winding down,
- 0:43he [music] takes me for a ride. Today,
- 0:45he's going to show me the new houses
- 0:47he's working on. [music] Papy is careful
- 0:49with my ponytail as he pulls my helmet
- 0:51tight. When he lifts [music] me onto the
- 0:53smooth black sheet, his hands don't feel
- 0:56rough. They don't feel [music] tired.
- 0:58They feel like all the love he has
- 1:00trouble saying. Lista, see. Papy revs
- 1:04the engine.
- 1:06And the smell of gasoline hits me as he
- 1:08squeezes the accelerator. Vroom.
- 1:13Be careful, says mommy. The motor
- 1:15rumbles and growls. Aar. Hold on, says
- 1:18puppy. And then we take off. The shiny
- 1:22blue metal of the motorcycle glows in
- 1:24the sun. The sun. The sun. The bright
- 1:26orange sun is on its way down. [music]
- 1:29Turning our sky blue and purple and
- 1:31gold. We become a spectacular [music]
- 1:34celestial thing soaring on asphalt. A
- 1:37comet. The sawdust falling from BY's
- 1:39hair and clothes becomes a tail
- 1:41following us.
- 1:44By zigzags through the streets. We pass
- 1:46Aita's [music]
- 1:47church and Ariel Estraa and stop for
- 1:50stray cats crossing in front of us.
- 1:53Mommy thinks there's too many of them,
- 1:54but I think there's just enough.
- 1:58We pass [music] Joyy's Market where
- 1:59mommy buys my gummy bears. Mr. Garcia,
- 2:02our librarian, is walking out the door
- 2:04and [music] nods at us. We nod back.
- 2:06This is how we always greet each other.
- 2:09Daisy, we wore past murals that tell our
- 2:12history of citrus groves and immigrants
- 2:15who worked them and of the famous road
- 2:17race that took place on Grand Boulevard
- 2:19100 years ago. Now I know that we're
- 2:21stopping at Vancouver's restaurant.
- 2:25But as we near the shop, we see that
- 2:27it's empty and out of business. I can
- 2:29tell Poppy is disappointed. I imagine
- 2:32the smell of the sweet syrups used to
- 2:34flavor our shaved [music] ice. I won't
- 2:36be the only one who misses him.
- 2:39As we ride on, I feel and hear everyone
- 2:41and everything we pass by. Each sound
- 2:44landing in my ears rebuilds whole
- 2:46neighborhoods inside me. No matter how
- 2:48far I go from this place or how much it
- 2:51changes, this city will always be with
- 2:53me.
- 2:55Miha, we cruise by Aalito and Aolita's
- 2:58old yellow house. The [music] one with
- 3:00the lemon tree that grew from the seeds
- 3:02of the lemons Aito used to pick not far
- 3:04from here. Mommy says that we're going
- 3:06to visit them tomorrow to get nales from
- 3:08their garden and eat herby along and
- 3:10abolita's kitchen where the food always
- 3:13tastes better. Adiosa. Adios. We turn
- 3:17the corner and then
- 3:20the dogs behind the fences go wild.
- 3:23Frankie the Lopez's Labradoodle escapes
- 3:25from her yard and runs after us. Mercses
- 3:28Lopez, the fastest runner in our class,
- 3:30races after her. They're right behind
- 3:33us. Then just as fast, the dogs [music]
- 3:35barking and Mercedes and Frankie become
- 3:38a soft hush in the distance.
- 3:41We arrive towards the new homes,
- 3:43replacing the last of the citrus groves.
- 3:45The painters, drywallers, and floral
- 3:48layers all greet us, but we can barely
- 3:49hear their words amid the sounds of
- 3:51hammers and air compressors.
- 3:55A little bit, not too much. Even in all
- 3:58that [music] noise, my puppy's voice
- 3:59catches everything.
- 4:02Around the circle, this is my favorite
- 4:04part. On Grand Boulevard, we lean into
- 4:07the curb of the street. I make [music]
- 4:09believe that we're in one of the races
- 4:10that took place here so long ago. It's
- 4:13our last lap, and we have to win. The
- 4:15crowd cheers us on. Daisy, Daisy, Daisy.
- 4:20I feel puppy smile as I squeeze my arms
- 4:22tighter [music] around him. Mama's
- 4:24puppy, faster, faster. We fly around the
- 4:27circle. There's a school where we
- 4:28practice soccer. There's a post office
- 4:30where Mr. Charlie takes the letters and
- 4:32laadia where puppy buys on Sunday
- 4:35mornings.
- 4:37Here it is. All of our beautiful city.
- 4:40My eyes try to catch everything but the
- 4:42colors of houses blend into one another.
- 4:44Red, blue, green, orange, pink. Vroom.
- 4:48We ride, ride, ride until the blue glow
- 4:51from the motorcycle begins to dim and
- 4:53[music] our comet tail has been left
- 4:55behind on the streets we've traveled. We
- 4:57head home and slowly the engine echoes
- 5:00us back onto our street and then our
- 5:03driveway, our [music] finish line. Mommy
- 5:05and little brother hear the motorcycle
- 5:07and run out to greet us. Mommy waves us
- 5:10in just like a referee. Poppy and I
- 5:12can't stop laughing. We had a good ride.
- 5:15Through our laughter, I hear a familiar
- 5:18sound. Hong Kong.
- 5:22I think about my [music] city and all
- 5:24the changes it's been through and all
- 5:25the changes that will come.
- 5:30But I know [music] that here in our
- 5:32little house, there are things that will
- 5:34always stay the same. MΓ±ana, we [music]
- 5:37fly again.
