- 0:00My mother in-law said, "I don't knock.
- 0:01This is family." I said, "You're right."
- 0:03So, I started letting myself into hers.
- 0:04Nine days later, there was a locksmith
- 0:06in her driveway. Wes and I bought our
- 0:07first house four years ago. His mother,
- 0:08Diane, lived 11 minutes away and treated
- 0:10those 11 minutes like a hallway. She had
- 0:12a key. She used it Tuesday mornings
- 0:13while I was at work. I'd come home to a
- 0:15note on the counter. "Your fridge is a
- 0:16crime scene. Love, D." Wes thought it
- 0:17was hilarious. "That's just Mom." Then
- 0:19things started going missing. Cloth
- 0:20napkins my grandmother embroidered, the
- 0:21little photo album from our wedding,
- 0:23then Grandma Nell's serving dish, blue
- 0:24and white, chipped on the rim, the only
- 0:26thing I asked for when she passed. I
- 0:27tore the house apart looking for it
- 0:28twice. "You've been really stressed,"
- 0:30Wes said. "You probably packed it
- 0:31somewhere." It lives in that cabinet.
- 0:32It's never lived anywhere else. He gave
- 0:33me the look, the one that means you're
- 0:34doing the thing again. I asked Diane at
- 0:36dinner. She didn't look up from her
- 0:37plate. "Honey, if you can't keep track
- 0:39of your own things, that's not a
- 0:40mystery. That's a habit." Renee, Wes's
- 0:41sister, laughed into her wine. I stopped
- 0:43asking. Two Christmases back, Diane got
- 0:45sentimental after the second glass and
- 0:46went around the table handing out spare
- 0:48keys to her house, mine included. "This
- 0:49door is your door," she said, actually
- 0:51tearing up. "Family doesn't need
- 0:52permission. Family doesn't knock." I put
- 0:53mine in the junk drawer and forgot it.
- 0:55The Thursday after the dish vanished,
- 0:56Diane let herself in while I was in the
- 0:57shower. I came downstairs in a towel to
- 0:59find her in my kitchen going through my
- 1:00mail. "You have to knock," I said. She
- 1:02smiled at me like I was six. "I don't
- 1:03knock. This is family." I stood there
- 1:04dripping on my own floor and I nodded.
- 1:06"You're right." She seemed pleased with
- 1:07that. Friday, I dug the key out of the
- 1:09junk drawer. Monday, I drove over on my
- 1:10lunch break and opened her front door.
- 1:12Diane came off the couch like the
- 1:13cushion was electric. "Oh, you should
- 1:14have called." "Just dropping by," I
- 1:16said. I sat down. I stayed 40 minutes.
- 1:18She never sat back down once. Wednesday,
- 1:19she beat me to the door, stepped onto
- 1:21the porch, held it shut behind her, and
- 1:22talked about hydrangeas in the rain.
- 1:24Thursday, my phone buzzed at 11:40.
- 1:25"Heading out. Don't come by." Friday,
- 1:2711:38. "At Renee's. Don't come by."
- 1:29Saturday, 11:41. "Not feeling well.
- 1:31Don't come by." Three texts, three days,
- 1:33all within four minutes of each other,
- 1:34all right before my lunch break. Sunday,
- 1:35I came anyway. The door was locked.
- 1:37Diane has lived in that house 31 years.
- 1:39I have never once seen that door locked.
- 1:40Her car was in the driveway. I knocked,
- 1:42actually knocked, for two full minutes.
- 1:43The curtain moved. I stood there long
- 1:45enough for her to know I'd seen it, then
- 1:46drove home. Wednesday, I drove past.
- 1:48Locksmith van in the driveway. Diane in
- 1:49the grass in her cardigan watching him
- 1:51work. I called Wes from the parking lot.
- 1:52"Your mother is changing her locks."
- 1:53Long pause. "Why would she do that?"
- 1:55"Ask her Sunday." Sunday is Diane's
- 1:56dinner. She's hosted it every week for
- 1:58as long as Wes has been alive. 12 of us
- 1:59that night. I got there 15 minutes
- 2:01early. I didn't knock. The door swung
- 2:02open and Diane turned from the stove and
- 2:04I watched her whole face come off. What
- 2:05are you doing? It came out at a volume
- 2:06that house had never heard. You cannot
- 2:08just walk into people's homes. The
- 2:09kitchen went very very quiet. This door
- 2:11is your door, I said. Family doesn't
- 2:12need permission. Family doesn't knock.
- 2:14Nobody moved. Every one of those 12
- 2:15people had been at that table two
- 2:16Christmases ago. Diane's mouth worked.
- 2:18That's not what I You said it holding a
- 2:19key. You gave me one. Get out of my
- 2:21house. Her voice cracked in the middle
- 2:22of it. Sure, I said. I'll grab Grandma
- 2:23Nell's dish on my way. And I started
- 2:25down the hall. Diane got there first.
- 2:26She put her back against the guest room
- 2:27door, spread her arms across the frame
- 2:29and said, "There's nothing in there." 12
- 2:30people watched her do it. Wes stood up.
- 2:31He didn't say a word. He walked down the
- 2:33hall, stood in front of his mother, and
- 2:34waited. She wouldn't look at him. He
- 2:35reached past her shoulder and turned the
- 2:36knob. She let him. The napkins, the
- 2:38album, a stack of things I'd quit
- 2:39looking for months ago. And on the
- 2:40middle shelf, dusted, turned so the chip
- 2:42faced the wall, Grandma Nell's serving
- 2:43dish. All of it arranged like a display.
- 2:45Then Diane straightened her cardigan and
- 2:46announced to the room, "I was keeping
- 2:48them safe." I picked up the dish. It fit
- 2:49my hands the way it always had. You're
- 2:50right, I said. Family doesn't need
- 2:52permission. I walked out the front door
- 2:53and left it standing wide open behind
- 2:54me.
