My First Contract as a Cruise Ship Musician | MSC Poesia Cabin Tour & First Shows — Transcript

- 0:01Throughout history, mankind has shown an
- 0:04insatiable thirst for knowledge. Driven
- 0:07by our desire to understand the universe
- 0:09and our place within it.
- 0:12We've pondered the origins of life, the
- 0:15nature of consciousness, and the fabric
- 0:17of space and time. We seek answers to
- 0:20questions like, "Where do we come from?
- 0:25What is the meaning of existence?
- 0:28Where are my keys? And is 3 in
- 0:32considered small?
- 0:34Yet amidst these profound inquiries, the
- 0:38biggest mystery remains.
- 0:40>> What's it like to be a guest entertainer
- 0:42on a cruise ship?
- 0:45>> Well, today
- 0:47we finally have an answer.
- 0:52>> Hi, my name is Joel. As we speak, I'm
- 0:56engaged in my first ever contract as a
- 1:00guest performer on the MSSE Poisia
- 1:04cruise ship.
- 1:06MSE.
- 1:07My role is a solo guitar vocalist and I
- 1:11perform typically four to five sets a
- 1:15night, 7 days a week as we cruise around
- 1:19Northern Europe.
- 1:22I thought I'd record a little bit of my
- 1:24life on board the ship to give an idea
- 1:26of what's involved. Whether you're
- 1:28considering pursuing a career in this
- 1:30field yourself
- 1:32or if you're just interested in what
- 1:34daily life is like for a cruise
- 1:36entertainer. When I was researching this
- 1:39job myself, I watched quite a few
- 1:40YouTube videos uploaded by cruise
- 1:43musicians, and I found them really
- 1:44helpful and informative. So, I'm hoping
- 1:47maybe this one can be added to the list
- 1:49and can be of interest to somebody out
- 1:52there in the worldwide
- 1:55world.
- 1:58So, to start off, here's a little bit of
- 2:00info about the particular cruise that
- 2:03I'm on at the moment. As I already
- 2:05mentioned, it's the MSC cruise line and
- 2:09visits five different countries in a
- 2:11oneweek loop. One, two, three, four,
- 2:15five.
- 2:16>> What's unique about this particular
- 2:18cruise is that people can embark in any
- 2:20one of the five cities. So, there isn't
- 2:23just one embarcation city, which is what
- 2:26you get with a lot of cruises. Those
- 2:28five places are Southampton in the UK,
- 2:33Rotterdam in the Netherlands,
- 2:36Hamburg in Germany.
- 2:39>> Say bugger
- 2:40>> in Belgium,
- 2:42and Laav
- 2:44made that sound Spanish. It's It's not.
- 2:46It's in France. Laavah.
- 2:50>> It's La Havra. You
- 2:53>> all right? During the time that I've
- 2:55been on the cruise, there's been a
- 2:57couple of very specific special weeks,
- 3:00namely the European Christmas markets
- 3:04and the New Year's cruise.
- 3:08So, I've had lots of fun getting festive
- 3:10and playing Christmas songs and also
- 3:12getting to see in the new year with
- 3:14people from all over the world. Anyway,
- 3:17that's the boring details out of the
- 3:19way. Time to get on with the fun bits. I
- 3:22say fun.
- 3:24That's quotation marks because it might
- 3:25not be fun.
- 3:33Now, I know a fair amount of people are
- 3:35interested in cabin tours on cruise
- 3:37ships, so this is for you.
- 3:55Nice big double bed. That's for sleeping
- 3:58in. Who's that handsome chap? What's he
- 4:00doing in my cabin? Yeah. Hello. Yeah.
- 4:03All right. Trying to do a tour here.
- 4:06This is a bunk bed in case I have a
- 4:08guest, which I haven't. Some art. One
- 4:12art, please.
- 4:14Nice chair.
- 4:17Handy coat hook there.
- 4:21And over. Yeah. All right, mate. We get
- 4:24it. Yeah, it's a reflection.
- 4:29So, over here we have the storage. Nice
- 4:31big double wardrobe with coat hangers
- 4:33for hanging things. That's my life
- 4:35jacket.
- 4:38And we'll open this one.
- 4:42How did you get in there?
- 4:47Well, you've already seen in here
- 4:49because you've just been in there. But
- 4:50more shelves with nothing on apart from
- 4:52some beach towels I never use because
- 4:54it's too cold to go in the pool.
- 4:57By the way, the reason that I don't have
- 4:58anything on my shelves is because I have
- 5:00to move cabins quite frequently because
- 5:02I'm a guest performer. And sometimes
- 5:04other guests need the cabin that I was
- 5:06in because they paid for it. So, I don't
- 5:07even bother emptying my suitcase most of
- 5:09the time.
- 5:11We got a safe and more life jackets.
- 5:13Basically, if there was a problem at
- 5:15sea, I wouldn't need a lifeboat. I could
- 5:16just collect all my life jackets that
- 5:18I've got in this room together to sit
- 5:19on. TV, which is nice. And most
- 5:22importantly, tea making facilities. They
- 5:25get hammered. I use those a lot. Nice
- 5:29little stool there. A mini fridge, which
- 5:31they lock me out of because obviously I
- 5:34would abuse it considering I don't drink
- 5:36at all. That's where I keep my guitar
- 5:39and my music equipment.
- 5:43And the bathroom. See, it's quite big.
- 5:45Pretty sizable.
- 5:51Toilet for toileting.
- 5:54The shower. It was pretty powerful. It's
- 5:57It's a good shower. And then these
- 5:58little handy racks for the one toiletry
- 6:01item that I brought with me. And I
- 6:03needn't have bothered because that's
- 6:04shampoo and shower gel right there.
- 6:07Hot water apparently in the shower. Who
- 6:10would have thought it? some towels and
- 6:12some shelves. I'm not sponsored by
- 6:14Nivea, just just so you know. The sink
- 6:17that is a razor, by the way. Don't go
- 6:18thinking it's anything else battery
- 6:20powered. And that's pretty much it. So,
- 6:22if you don't mind, give me some privacy.
- 6:24I'm going to bed.
- 6:31>> Good morning.
- 6:34So, it wasn't actually a mirror. It was
- 6:35a window, but it was too dark to see out
- 6:37of it. And look at that for a view. This
- 6:40is a lifeboat. This cabin is called an
- 6:43obstructed view cabin. So, you expect to
- 6:45not really be able to see out of the
- 6:46window, but it lets some daylight in, so
- 6:48you can't complain.
- 6:55For my first time off the ship, I got on
- 6:57a bus and headed to downtown Hamburg in
- 7:00Germany to see some of the beautiful
- 7:03classically European style architecture
- 7:05they have in the city center.
- 7:10We'll come back to that building in a
- 7:12minute.
- 7:14Now, I've been to Hamburg before, maybe
- 7:1620 years ago, when I played a show
- 7:18nearby, but I don't remember much about
- 7:20it, and I don't think I came to this
- 7:22part. So, it's nice to spend some time
- 7:24down by the river here with these
- 7:26gorgeous buildings and these lovely
- 7:28reflections.
- 7:37Here I was standing on one of the
- 7:38bridges that crosses the river.
- 7:48Now with my expert German, I can
- 7:50translate that for you. It means new
- 7:53wall. You're welcome.
- 7:56Now this is a very rich, very opulent
- 7:59part of the city and every single shop
- 8:01was firmly beyond my financial
- 8:03capabilities. So I didn't go into any of
- 8:05them.
- 8:10And here we have the pestto resistance
- 8:13as they say in Germany which is the rat
- 8:16house which is basically the town hall.
- 8:19So this is where the local council meet
- 8:21in this beautiful building that was
- 8:23constructed between 1886 and 1897
- 8:27obviously under the direction of
- 8:28architect Martin Hala in the neo
- 8:30renaissance style.
- 8:34Its tower at 112 m high is a prominent
- 8:37landmark in they're just facts that I
- 8:39know. I didn't look them up or anything
- 8:41on a very famous encyclopedia website.
- 8:44That's not even a word
- 8:47inside. Apart from the incredible roof
- 8:50because it was Christmas, they had this
- 8:52amazing Christmas tree set up.
- 8:59Although I was disappointed to discover
- 9:01there were no rats in the rat house. Get
- 9:04it? Rat. Rat house. Rats.
- 9:08>> They're not funny.
- 9:10>> Yeah, fair enough.
- 9:13After the rat house, I decided to go for
- 9:15a little unplanned wander around, see
- 9:18where I ended up, and I saw these
- 9:20beautiful trees lit up for Christmas.
- 9:34some very nice art sculptures. Now, this
- 9:38is St. Nicholas Church, which is again a
- 9:40very old building, as I'm sure you know.
- 9:43The original chapel was built in 1195,
- 9:45but then of course there was that fire
- 9:47in 1842. So, they completely rebuilt the
- 9:49church in 1874. And it was the tallest
- 9:53building in the world until 1876,
- 9:55obviously, but I you already knew that.
- 9:58And that concludes my wintry walk around
- 10:00Hamburg. Now, it's time to go back and
- 10:02get ready for tonight's show.
- 10:06Okay, time to get ready with me.
- 10:15I'm not ready.
- 10:21Right.
- 10:22That's more like it. Let's go.
- 10:52This is the bar that I perform in every
- 10:54night. Bar do the poet, the bar of the
- 10:57poets. Even though I'm not actually a
- 10:59poet.
- 11:01>> It's not a cry that you hear at night.
- 11:04It's not somebody.
- 11:07It's so cold and it's so broken.
- 11:11Hallelujah.
- 11:14Hallelujah.
- 11:18Hallelujah.
- 11:21Hallelujah.
- 11:25Hallelujah.
- 11:31>> It's colder. That's where it ends.
- 11:36So I told her we still be friends
- 11:42and we make our true love.
- 11:53Summer dreams ripped out the seas.
- 12:09Tell me more. Tell me more.
- 12:21Wow, that was great.
- 12:23Great singing.
- 12:30Let's have a look at the outside of the
- 12:31old ship, then, shall we?
- 12:34Now, first thing to mention is it's
- 12:36quite a small ship compared to a lot of
- 12:38the other MSSE ships in the fleet. So,
- 12:40this tour won't take long. I like to
- 12:42spend time out here on the outer deck
- 12:44just to breathe in the sea air and watch
- 12:46the world go by,
- 12:49although it was r freezing most of the
- 12:51time. Some pipes. Don't know what they
- 12:54do. They look important though. So, this
- 12:57is the top deck anyway, deck 13. Because
- 13:00I'm here as a guest performer, it means
- 13:02I'm fortunate enough to have full access
- 13:04to all the guest areas on the ship. So,
- 13:06I'm a very lucky boy.
- 13:10This is where the pool is up on the top
- 13:12deck. Obviously, I didn't go in it. It
- 13:14was freezing, as I say, but some people
- 13:17did. I did see some people swimming in
- 13:19there.
- 13:21They don't have a lifeguard. They just
- 13:23have this guy sitting there watching
- 13:24everyone all day. You could have put
- 13:26some pants on, though. Come on. Short.
- 13:29And they also have the hot tubs, which
- 13:31are actually very popular. Don't worry,
- 13:33there's no nudity in this scene. Don't
- 13:35Don't even bother checking. This is a
- 13:38stage. During the warmer months, artists
- 13:40will perform up here. So, it would have
- 13:42been really nice to play up here myself,
- 13:44but no one wants to be out there in
- 13:46these temperatures.
- 13:54the tennis court,
- 13:57which is also a football pitch,
- 14:01and the mini golf. Right, that'll do for
- 14:04now. I'll show you the inside of the
- 14:05ship later on.
- 14:16Here
- 14:24we are in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
- 14:27Although I was a bit confused when I
- 14:29woke up and looked out the window and
- 14:30saw this. Thought we'd maybe traveled a
- 14:32bit further in the night than I thought
- 14:33we had. But it turns out it's just a
- 14:35hotel. I was walking towards the city
- 14:37center and happened to catch this
- 14:39rainbow as I crossed the bridge, which
- 14:41felt suspiciously cinematic.
- 14:45Now, I wasn't entirely sure what to do
- 14:47on a budget in Rotterdam in the time
- 14:49that I had. So, I decided to Google
- 14:52things to do and found this map somebody
- 14:54had put together that leads you around
- 14:56all of the street art in the city
- 14:58center. I've credited the person who put
- 15:00the map together down there in the
- 15:02bottom corner with a link to their
- 15:03website. So, here's a little collage of
- 15:05a very small percentage of the street
- 15:07art in Rotterdam. Enjoy. Oh, and I
- 15:11credited the artist as well. Heat. Heat.
- 15:54After my little street art tour, I
- 15:56thought I'd go and check out the
- 15:57sculpture park. So, these are all on the
- 15:59same stretch of canal that flows through
- 16:01the center of the city.
- 16:40After my obligatory hot chocolate break,
- 16:42I walked back to the ship and found a
- 16:44couple more points of interest, POIs, on
- 16:48the way back, like this sculpture here,
- 16:50which is apparently quite a
- 16:51controversial piece because a lot of
- 16:53people just don't like it. It is Father
- 16:55Christmas, but it wasn't specifically
- 16:57there because it was Christmas time.
- 16:59It's there all year round. And I'm told
- 17:02that is a Christmas tree he's holding,
- 17:04even though it does look like something
- 17:05else. A bit more dodgy. Right next to it
- 17:08is this guy. Don't exactly know who he
- 17:10is. I could Google it, but I like the
- 17:13fact he played guitar. Could be me in a
- 17:15former life. Right, back to the ship for
- 17:17another show.
- 17:48Lucky baby.
- 18:09Every little thing is going to be all
- 18:12right.
- 18:14Rise up this morning.
- 18:18Smile with the rising sun.
- 18:21Freedom of mercy
- 18:24reach by my doorstep.
- 18:49Oh [ __ ]
- 19:12outside. I take a deep breath and I get
- 19:15real high and I scream on top of my lord
- 19:35again and I say Hey,
- 19:44I said.
- 19:56>> All right, that's it for this video, but
- 19:58join me in part two where things get
- 20:00festive. Christmas Day, New Year's Eve,
- 20:03more performances, and at one point I'm
- 20:06wandering around in the snow. I know you
- 20:08wouldn't want to miss that. Don't forget
- 20:10to
- 20:10>> like and subscribe.
- 20:12>> Sorry, I mean
- 20:13>> like and subscribe.
- 20:16>> Cheers, me dear.
