- 0:00Daniel said you didn't want us at the
- 0:01wedding. The woman at the door told me.
- 0:05She had his eyes the same gray blue
- 0:07shade that always looked softer when he
- 0:09laughed. I had driven 2 hours from
- 0:11Columbus to Dayton, [clears throat]
- 0:13expecting an angry mother. Instead, I
- 0:15found a woman staring at my engagement
- 0:17ring as if it were a terrible surprise.
- 0:20Daniel and I had been together for 3
- 0:22years. When my father died, Daniel spent
- 0:25an entire Saturday fixing the loose
- 0:27steps outside my mother's house. He
- 0:29washed the sawdust off his hands and
- 0:31helped her set the table. He made
- 0:33kindness feel ordinary. We planned a
- 0:35small November wedding with lemon cake
- 0:38because it had been my father's
- 0:39favorite. But Daniel refused to let me
- 0:41meet his parents. He described Ruth and
- 0:44his father Peter as controlling people
- 0:47who criticized every decision he made.
- 0:50They'll ruin anything they can touch, he
- 0:52said. When I suggested sending an
- 0:54invitation anyway, he took the envelope
- 0:56from my hand. Please don't make me
- 0:58choose between you and them. I accepted
- 1:01it at first. Families could be
- 1:03complicated. Then my mother asked
- 1:05whether he wanted to leave two empty
- 1:06chairs for his parents just in case.
- 1:09Daniel snapped. There won't be any empty
- 1:11chairs. He apologized for his tone, not
- 1:15the rule. I remembered being 12,
- 1:18listening to my parents argue behind a
- 1:20closed bedroom door, learning to call
- 1:22silence peace. I wondered if I was doing
- 1:24it again. A week later, while we sorted
- 1:27boxes for our new apartment, I found a
- 1:30folded children's drawing tucked inside
- 1:32an old cookbook.
- 1:34Three stick figures stood beneath a
- 1:35crooked yellow sun. One was labeled
- 1:37daddy. Daniel saw it and took it
- 1:39quickly. My cousin's little girl made
- 1:41that, he said. His smile arrived too
- 1:44late. I couldn't forget how carefully he
- 1:46smoothed it. I found his parents address
- 1:50on the return label of a Christmas card
- 1:51he'd left in a drawer. I wrote Ruth a
- 1:54note saying I hoped we could speak
- 1:56before the wedding. She called the next
- 1:59evening, sounding startled but kind.
- 2:02Daniel was at work when I drove to
- 2:04Dayton. I needed to know whether I was
- 2:06marrying a man with painful boundaries
- 2:08or a man who needed everyone separated
- 2:10to keep his stories straight.
- 2:13Ruth invited me into a kitchen that
- 2:15smelled of cinnamon toast. Peter set a
- 2:18cup of tea in front of me, then sat down
- 2:20slowly. They hadn't received an
- 2:22invitation. In fact, Daniel had told
- 2:25them the engagement had ended months
- 2:27earlier. Ruth showed me a letter from
- 2:30him asking them to stop contacting him
- 2:31about his private life. He said I was
- 2:34unstable. Ruth told me, "Maybe that's
- 2:37what he told you, too." Daniel had lied
- 2:40to all of us. But on the refrigerator
- 2:43was a photograph of a little girl with a
- 2:45missing front tooth holding the same
- 2:47drawing I'd found in his cookbook.
- 2:50Beneath it in green marker were the
- 2:52words Lily, age seven. Is that his
- 2:55cousin's daughter? I asked. Ruth's face
- 2:59changed. Peter stared into his tea.
- 3:02That's Daniel's daughter, Ruth said.
- 3:05She's eight now. I heard the
- 3:07refrigerator motor clicking on. Daniel
- 3:09had told me he'd never been married and
- 3:11didn't have children. Ruth explained
- 3:12he'd divorced Lily's mother 4 years
- 3:14before we met. He paid child support and
- 3:17saw Lily some weekends, but his visits
- 3:19had become less frequent. Ruth and Peter
- 3:22still took Lily to the park every other
- 3:24Sunday with her mother's permission.
- 3:26"Daniel had stopped visiting his parents
- 3:28after they refused to pretend Lily
- 3:30didn't exist."
- 3:32"He told us you'd never accept a child,"
- 3:34Peter said. Nobody had asked whether I
- 3:37could love a child who wasn't mine.
- 3:39Daniel had made that decision for me,
- 3:42then called his parents cruel for
- 3:44refusing to go along with it. I thought
- 3:46about the night I'd told Daniel I wanted
- 3:48a family someday. He'd kissed my
- 3:51forehead and said, "We'll start with
- 3:53just us."
- 3:55I'd thought he meant we had time.
- 3:57Apparently, he'd meant there was someone
- 3:59I wasn't allowed to know about.
- 4:02Before I left, Ruth gave me a copy of
- 4:05Lily's photograph.
- 4:07Back in Columbus, I took the wedding
- 4:09folder off our bookshelf. Our names were
- 4:11printed together on every vendor
- 4:13contract. I wanted to call his parents
- 4:15again, ask for proof, begged someone to
- 4:18say there had been a misunderstanding.
- 4:21Instead, I called my sister, Mara. She
- 4:24came over with takeout and sat beside me
- 4:26while I looked at the payments I'd made.
- 4:28"You can love someone and still not
- 4:29marry them," she said, pushing the
- 4:32untouched food closer.
- 4:34I didn't contact Lily or her mother.
- 4:37They owed me nothing, and Lily deserved
- 4:39better than another stranger bringing
- 4:41trouble into her life. I saved the
- 4:43messages Daniel had sent about his
- 4:44parents. I checked the cancellation
- 4:46terms for the venue and photographer.
- 4:48Then I waited until he came home. He
- 4:51found the photo Ruth had given me on the
- 4:52kitchen table. Where did you get that?
- 4:55Your mother. She thinks we broke up. His
- 4:58expression hardened. I told you to leave
- 5:01them alone. You also told me you had no
- 5:04children. [clears throat] He sat down.
- 5:06For a long time, he said nothing. He
- 5:09admitted Lily was his daughter. He said
- 5:11he'd been afraid that if I knew, I'd
- 5:13leave before I understood him. I was
- 5:16going to tell you after the wedding, he
- 5:18whispered. After I promised you my life,
- 5:21he said Ruth had never accepted his
- 5:23decisions, that she always put Lily
- 5:25first. The sentence told me more than
- 5:27his excuses. Lily was not a decision his
- 5:30mother was stubbornly defending. She was
- 5:32a child who needed her father. I took
- 5:35off my ring and placed it beside the
- 5:36photograph.
- 5:38I'm not calling you a bad father because
- 5:40you made mistakes, I said. I'm ending
- 5:43this because you asked me to build a
- 5:44marriage on a lie. We canled the wedding
- 5:47the following morning. We lost some
- 5:49deposits. Daniel repaid his agreed share
- 5:52over the next 3 months. The rest became
- 5:54an expensive lesson I had chosen rather
- 5:56than a marriage I couldn't trust. He
- 5:59moved into a rented room. He tried
- 6:01calling then stopped when I asked him to
- 6:03communicate only about the apartment. In
- 6:06January, he sent one letter. He said
- 6:09he'd started attending counseling and
- 6:11was trying to be more consistent with
- 6:12Lily. He didn't ask me to return. For
- 6:16the first time, he seemed to understand
- 6:18that an apology could not be another way
- 6:20of getting what he wanted. I wrote back
- 6:22once. I wished him well, especially as
- 6:26Lily's father. I didn't offer friendship
- 6:29and I didn't promise forgiveness on a
- 6:31schedule.
- 6:33That spring, I baked my father's lemon
- 6:36cake for my mother's birthday. The top
- 6:38sank a little, the way it always had
- 6:40when he made it. We laughed and ate it
- 6:42anyway. I thought of the two empty
- 6:44chairs Daniel had forbidden, and how
- 6:46hard I'd worked not to notice the space
- 6:48around them. The worst part wasn't
- 6:51learning he had a daughter. It was
- 6:53realizing he treated the people who
- 6:54loved him as obstacles to being loved by
- 6:56someone new.
