My DIL Promised My Lake Cottage To Her Sister-she Never Expected My Response — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:04The cottage was mine, but my
- 0:06daughter-in-law had promised it to her
- 0:07sister. I learned this on an ordinary
- 0:09Tuesday morning as fog lifted from Lake
- 0:11Lanner. At 68, newly retired after 32
- 0:15years as a principal, I had paid off the
- 0:17property and finally believed every
- 0:18decision about my home was mine to
- 0:20decide. Then Paige called and announced
- 0:22that her sister Brooke would move into
- 0:24the cottage after her divorce. She spoke
- 0:26as though she were updating me about a
- 0:27delivery. I told her no. Brooke was
- 0:30facing a difficult time, I said, and I
- 0:32wished her well, but my cottage was not
- 0:34available. Paige gave a small laugh of
- 0:36disbelief. She reminded me that Brooke
- 0:38had two children and needed somewhere
- 0:40stable. I understood the situation. I
- 0:42simply had not agreed to become its
- 0:44solution. Paige said my son Colin had
- 0:47already approved the plan. When I asked
- 0:49whether he had offered my property, she
- 0:50admitted they had discussed it. That was
- 0:52not permission. I told her immediately.
- 0:55For years, I had helped Colin and Paige
- 0:57without keeping a tally. I watched their
- 0:59daughter during the pandemic, lent Colin
- 1:01money for a car repair, and hosted
- 1:03holidays when Paige's mom needed
- 1:04surgery. Somewhere along the way, my
- 1:07generosity had become an expectation.
- 1:09Paige seemed to believe that if she kept
- 1:11pressing, my answer would eventually
- 1:12soften under pressure. Colin called
- 1:14later that morning. He talked about
- 1:16rising rents, the divorce Brooke faced,
- 1:18and the girls needing to remain near
- 1:20school. I let him finish, then asked
- 1:22whether he had told Paige she could
- 1:23offer my cottage. He admitted he had
- 1:26said I might consider it. He had not
- 1:28corrected her when maybe became a
- 1:29promise without asking. He called it
- 1:31temporary and asked me to think about
- 1:32the children. I told him he could offer
- 1:35space in his own home if he wished, but
- 1:36he said they did not have room. I
- 1:38reminded him that an empty cottage was
- 1:40still my home. I knew image mattered far
- 1:42more to him than my answer that day.
- 1:44After the call, I walked down to the
- 1:46cottage and tried the brass key page
- 1:47still had from a renovation. It opened
- 1:49the door. That small click made me
- 1:51realize I had never formally ended the
- 1:53access I had once given her. By
- 1:55Thursday, I had changed the cottage
- 1:57locks and reset the driveway gate code.
- 1:59I texted Colin that nobody could enter
- 2:01or bring belongings onto the property
- 2:03without my permission. He sent a thumbs
- 2:05up. Paige stayed silent. On Friday, an
- 2:08internet installer called from the gate,
- 2:10saying he had an appointment for Brooke
- 2:12at my address. I declined the
- 2:13installation. Paige called later,
- 2:16furious that I had disrupted her plans
- 2:17without my consent. She said Brooke
- 2:19worked remotely and needed internet,
- 2:21then admitted Brooke had already used my
- 2:23address on school forms and forwarding
- 2:25paperwork. I told her those details had
- 2:27to be corrected. I was not willing to
- 2:29let my property become an address of
- 2:31record without consent. Paige accused me
- 2:33of making rules more important than
- 2:35children over my wishes. That afternoon,
- 2:37I asked Colin to meet me at the cottage.
- 2:40He admitted Paige had told Brooke that
- 2:41the arrangement was settled. He also
- 2:43knew she had arranged mail there. I
- 2:45asked him to tell his wife plainly that
- 2:47the cottage was unavailable. He promised
- 2:49he would, but his reluctance told me he
- 2:51still hoped I would give in eventually.
- 2:53The next day, a furniture delivery
- 2:55arrived with a sofa, two bed frames, and
- 2:57boxes marked for Brooke. I refused it.
- 3:00Brooke called later, sounding
- 3:02embarrassed and exhausted. She said
- 3:04Paige had told her I offered the cottage
- 3:05months earlier. I told her I had never
- 3:07made that offer, and I was sorry she had
- 3:09been misled about my answer. Brooke said
- 3:11she had already given notice at her old
- 3:13place. For the first time, the
- 3:15consequences reached someone who had not
- 3:17knowingly crossed my boundary. I felt
- 3:19sorry for her, but I could not fix a
- 3:21false promise by surrendering my home.
- 3:23She accepted my answer, and for a few
- 3:25days, the call stopped for a while. Then
- 3:27Colin warned me that Paige planned to
- 3:29bring a moving truck anyway. She
- 3:31believed I would change my mind once the
- 3:32furniture arrived. I stopped trying to
- 3:35persuade anyone further. I reset the
- 3:37gate access, saved the messages and call
- 3:39records, and wrote down the dates of the
- 3:41refused deliveries. I also spoke with a
- 3:43deputy about possible trespassing. At 10
- 3:46the next morning, a moving truck arrived
- 3:47with Paige and Brooke behind it. The
- 3:49gate stayed shut. Paige tried the code,
- 3:52then demanded that I open it because the
- 3:54movers were charging by the hour. I told
- 3:56her there was no authorized delivery.
- 3:58Colin arrived moments later, and the
- 4:00argument finally became impossible to
- 4:02avoid any longer. Brooke then revealed
- 4:04Paige had told her Colin convinced me to
- 4:06change my mind. Colin admitted he had
- 4:08never said that. He finally told Paige
- 4:10they could help Brooke pay rent or
- 4:12arrange storage, but they could not
- 4:13promise someone else property. Brooke
- 4:15asked her sister to stop pressuring me
- 4:17and help her find another place. Colin
- 4:20paid for the first month of storage and
- 4:21the truck turned around. He apologized
- 4:24for making me repeat myself. Over 6
- 4:26weeks, Brooke found an apartment near
- 4:28the school her daughters attended with
- 4:30help from a coworker and a deposit from
- 4:31Colin. In October, he came by with tools
- 4:34and asked if he could repair my
- 4:35dockboard. We worked together, then sat
- 4:38on the dock watching a fishing boat
- 4:39cross the lake. Things between us were
- 4:41not perfect, but his request to help
- 4:43felt different from an assumption that I
- 4:45owed him access. I had not kept the
- 4:47cottage to punish anyone. I had kept it
- 4:49because it was mine and that was reason
