Mushroom Song Vocal FX - Psytrance Tutorial Ableton — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00You asked me about the cool vocal effect
- 0:01in the killer mushroom song and I will
- 0:04show you today how to make that.
- 0:07[Music]
- 0:09So step number one, we need a vocal from
- 0:12a professional singer like me which
- 0:14sounds ultra amazing like this one.
- 0:17>> We take the mushroom and LSD. Better the
- 0:21input, the better the output. And I'm
- 0:23sure um some of you guys will have some
- 0:25very nice vocals um to sing. Um, just
- 0:28check that you record it um good so that
- 0:30you don't have too much noise in it or
- 0:33use some AI tool to clean it up. Uh,
- 0:35record it like as loud um, that you're
- 0:37not clipping but you have like a good
- 0:39like signal to noise ratio. And that's
- 0:41basically all. And maybe you want to
- 0:43kind of like already bring the the pitch
- 0:46progression in there which you um plan
- 0:48to do later a bit. Uh, that will help in
- 0:51making that vocal. But you can also use
- 0:54probably like any vocal or sing like
- 0:56splicer loop cloud. Um, so the options
- 0:58are endlessly here. Step number two is
- 1:00that you already arrange the vocal. Um,
- 1:02so bring it into the right rhythm. As
- 1:04you can see, um, I chopped it like a
- 1:07little bit here and rearranged it so
- 1:09that if we have like a 16th grid here
- 1:11that it falls like nicely on the grid.
- 1:14Also made these things like longer and
- 1:17shorter um, in order to really have not
- 1:20too many like gaps in here. Um, so that
- 1:23everything kind of like works a little
- 1:26bit already with the vocal without the
- 1:28processing so that it already has like a
- 1:30rhythm um, you want to have later. The
- 1:32mushroom and
- 1:35>> you can play a bit around with the
- 1:37warping modes. You will get like
- 1:38different results, but complex is a
- 1:40pretty good one um, for vocals. Um, you
- 1:43can try that one or you could try like
- 1:44with tones and texture if you want to
- 1:46have a little bit more um, processing in
- 1:48it and a different sound. In the third
- 1:50step, we come to the processing and the
- 1:52processing basically has three parts and
- 1:55an extra part which I will show in the
- 1:57next step. Um so the first um is the
- 2:00pre-processing. So I'm already like
- 2:02cutting um some lows which I don't need.
- 2:04And you can write the vocal here the
- 2:06volume a little bit to compensate for
- 2:09example things which peak out so that
- 2:11you don't need to like compress this as
- 2:14much later. You can also put like DS's
- 2:17and everything, whatever you need in
- 2:19order to get like a clean source vocal
- 2:21in there. And from there, we actually go
- 2:23into the the trick here of this
- 2:26tutorial, what makes that sound. We had
- 2:28now four students releasing a duck
- 2:30record and you could be one of the next.
- 2:32If you're interested in leveling up your
- 2:34music production skills, then check the
- 2:36link in the description box below and
- 2:38see the course. The thing which really
- 2:40makes and breaks the sound here is this
- 2:44spectral resonator here. Um, and I would
- 2:46put it to the key of your track. Um, so
- 2:49you will need to find like a good octave
- 2:51which sounds nicely. And the chorus in
- 2:53the wonder mode um are pretty good for
- 2:56this. Um, you can play a bit around with
- 2:57the DK. Um, you can um change the the
- 3:02pitches in here. So to make it even more
- 3:04melodic and add a little bit of unison.
- 3:07Um, don't do too much because then it
- 3:09gets like this kind of like spooky
- 3:11horror sound and then you get like a
- 3:13sound like this.
- 3:15[Music]
- 3:22And I layered this a bit. So I added
- 3:25like a higher layer with a little bit
- 3:27different settings. Um, so they all have
- 3:29the same um, pitch here, but this one is
- 3:31one octave higher and it has a little
- 3:33bit longer DK and the same I have one
- 3:36octave lower with a little bit shorter
- 3:38DK in here. Um, without unison in the
- 3:42lower one and with a little bit of
- 3:44unison uh, unison of two, a bit more
- 3:46amount. So you basically tune them like
- 3:49a little bit different um, to make that
- 3:51whole thing kind of like stack nicely in
- 3:53different octaves. So if we compare like
- 3:55only this one
- 3:59with all three
- 4:03it gets way richer. Um, so I will play
- 4:06you the other two also as a comparison
- 4:09[Music]
- 4:15especially the low one kind of like adds
- 4:17that a little bit like gritty kind of
- 4:20like chopped feeling um to it. Um, so I
- 4:24did another tutorial as far as I
- 4:26remember about like creating like robbo
- 4:28vocals where you also use like spectral
- 4:30and then you just put it like in a
- 4:31really low octave and you get that kind
- 4:33of like robo sound. And if you have it
- 4:35in a higher octave like here, then you
- 4:36get a little bit more this kind of like
- 4:38alien type of sound. Um, so that's kind
- 4:41of like the main processing here which
- 4:43really changes the vocal a lot. And then
- 4:46we have um a little bit of mixing here.
- 4:48So I have like a transient shaper. Um, I
- 4:51do have a compressor. Uh, this one is
- 4:54not doing anything. I have a little bit
- 4:55of delay here. Another compressor here.
- 4:58Um, some EQing to get out some
- 5:00resonances and to boost some spots where
- 5:02there were frequencies. And in the end,
- 5:05I put like a little bit of reverb. Um,
- 5:07so I will turn each of those off and
- 5:09then I will turn each of them
- 5:12individually on and you can see what it
- 5:14does. Thank you so much for subscribing
- 5:16and if you aren't already subscribed and
- 5:17you will be missing all the new videos.
- 5:19It's really important to hit the
- 5:20subscribe button and the bell icon
- 5:22because only then YouTube will be
- 5:24pushing new tutorials to you.
- 5:28[Music]
- 5:31So it's not like huge uh things which
- 5:34happen here. So let's put that one.
- 5:37This one is actually not even
- 5:40[Music]
- 5:42we could turn that one off as well. And
- 5:45we have the delay here.
- 5:49So I put it to a 1/16th delay without
- 5:51ping pong. A little bit more dry wet.
- 5:54Not too much feedback. Um I have another
- 5:57compressor here um which is on a
- 6:00aggressive vocal setting.
- 6:02[Music]
- 6:11[Applause]
- 6:11[Music]
- 6:17So, it's also only adding a little bit.
- 6:20This makes it a little bit more
- 6:21pleasant, I would say,
- 6:23[Music]
- 6:29and colors it a little bit. And then we
- 6:31have the reverb here.
- 6:33[Music]
- 6:34[Applause]
- 6:39But the reverb is also like pretty um
- 6:41subtle. You can also try like a bigger
- 6:43one. Then you get a little bit more
- 6:44atmospheric.
- 6:46[Applause]
- 6:48So the reverb has a very um subtle mix
- 6:50here and a very tiny kind of like deck.
- 6:54Um I can also show you it gets a little
- 6:57bit more atmospheric if we use a bigger
- 7:00one here.
- 7:06[Music]
- 7:08Then you have it a bit more atmospheric.
- 7:10Uh, whatever you prefer. Um, I prefer
- 7:12this one. And then I have like a little
- 7:14final trick. Um, so I recorded
- 7:16everything with all the stuff on here
- 7:19with the the reverb and the delay on it
- 7:23and the transient designer and all the
- 7:25processing here into this um channel
- 7:28here uh into one channel like this um
- 7:31with like a lower octave. So I basically
- 7:34went in here and set all those one
- 7:37octave lower. So instead of E3, E2, E1,
- 7:41and E 0. And then we get this one here.
- 7:45[Music]
- 7:48And one higher
- 7:52on both. I put them to beats 116 in that
- 7:58with that arrow here. And around like
- 8:0140. And I think the other one is more or
- 8:03less the same, 47 here. Um, and what it
- 8:06does, it chops it again to 16. And I
- 8:09also put the warp markers because
- 8:11through all the processing, it wasn't
- 8:12really on the grid as I wanted to have
- 8:15it any more. Um, so together, this
- 8:18sounds a little bit nicer. So, if we
- 8:19compare um this version here
- 8:23[Music]
- 8:25with this, this sounds a bit more on
- 8:28time and richer.
- 8:31[Music]
- 8:33and the chopping is a little bit more
- 8:36pronounced. I show you one time in
- 8:38context
- 8:40[Music]
- 8:41and then gets a little bit more of that
- 8:43rhythmic feel. So, I hope you got the
- 8:46idea how to make those kind of vocals
- 8:48and I'm really curious what you're
- 8:50experimenting on. And as this was from a
- 8:52user request, um let me know in the
- 8:54comments if you want to know something
- 8:56whenever I feel this fits the channel
- 8:59then I'm happy to make a video about
