- 0:01hi this is kathy your librarian
- 0:04and i wanted to make this video to
- 0:06demonstrate why it's important
- 0:08to seek out multiple perspectives on
- 0:12your topic begin with a little story
- 0:15this is a book i found in the reference
- 0:17section
- 0:18when i was searching about the role of
- 0:21the world bank
- 0:22and the imf in alleviating poverty
- 0:26in the global south
- 0:29so it came across
- 0:32their page on the external debt
- 0:35and often when you're reading you might
- 0:39find something that seems a little
- 0:41sketchy or a little
- 0:43maybe oversimplified and when you do
- 0:48that might be a trigger to make you
- 0:50check out the
- 0:52author so for example in this case
- 0:55i found this passage debt owed by
- 0:57developing countries to foreign
- 0:59creditors
- 1:01emerged as a major issue in the late
- 1:031970s
- 1:05so think about it how can debt
- 1:08emerge by itself without any human
- 1:12agency
- 1:14that isn't a sort of person or entity
- 1:17that can just
- 1:18happen right it doesn't happen by itself
- 1:21and then the size of the debt and their
- 1:23ability to repay it
- 1:24was a problem for some latin american
- 1:27countries in the 1980s
- 1:30so often when you see this passive
- 1:32chance here was
- 1:34it is a convenient way of hiding
- 1:37responsibility
- 1:39so the size of the debt and the ability
- 1:42to repay it was a problem
- 1:45it's interesting that we don't really
- 1:47get any of the actors
- 1:49in this event
- 1:54i want to know how and why did it become
- 1:57a problem
- 2:00who are the actors so on the second page
- 2:04this text hints at some of the reasons
- 2:07for the
- 2:08debt including bad governance economic
- 2:11mismanagement
- 2:12and internal and external conflicts of
- 2:14these poor countries
- 2:18then the rest of the article talks about
- 2:20how the world bank and the imf
- 2:23have done a lot to alleviate poverty and
- 2:27debt relief
- 2:29have given debt relief to um some of
- 2:31these countries
- 2:33and really by the end of the article you
- 2:35tend to see the world bank as sort of a
- 2:37hero
- 2:38in alleviating poverty
- 2:42but it sounded sketchy to me because
- 2:44i'll admit i had a little prior
- 2:45knowledge about this topic
- 2:49the first thing i would do is say okay
- 2:51who is responsible for this
- 2:54and if we look at the author on the book
- 2:56itself or
- 2:57in the record it will say the world bank
- 3:00no author name um just the world bank
- 3:04itself and i would ask you
- 3:07how likely is it the world bank would
- 3:09want to
- 3:11criticize itself kind of like us
- 3:14on social media when we have to upload a
- 3:16profile image
- 3:18do we take the ugliest picture that we
- 3:21have of ourselves
- 3:22or the best
- 3:25so this is a time to start looking for
- 3:28some other perspectives
- 3:30and we'll start by searching primo
- 3:33to do that just go to the library
- 3:34homepage
- 3:36student resources library that's my way
- 3:40of getting to the library but there are
- 3:41others
- 3:44and instead of using this search box i'm
- 3:46going to go straight to the advanced
- 3:47search
- 3:52and i'm going to enter world bank or
- 3:54international monetary fund
- 3:55they're often sort of written about
- 3:58together
- 4:02and that's what the or is doing it's
- 4:03saying i'll take one or the other or
- 4:05both
- 4:06and i'm going to change this field to
- 4:08subject that way i know
- 4:11that the books or articles i pull up are
- 4:13really going to be about
- 4:15one of these topics and the second
- 4:19part of my research question had to do
- 4:20with poverty
- 4:23so i put that on another line
- 4:28so the first thing we do is pay
- 4:30attention to the
- 4:31results and in the third one we see this
- 4:35book title
- 4:3650 years is enough the case against
- 4:39the world bank in the international
- 4:41monetary fund
- 4:43if you click on it you'll get a little
- 4:45summary
- 4:48and this paragraph gives you a lot of
- 4:51reason
- 4:51to be a skeptical
- 4:55about the amount of poverty alleviation
- 4:58the world bank has actually done
- 5:05and scrolling through more results we
- 5:07get to this one the hypocrisy
- 5:09trap the world bank and the poverty
- 5:11reform
- 5:12now this book when you see online access
- 5:15it means you can actually just click and
- 5:17you go to the whole ebook itself
- 5:21just the title hints that
- 5:25some people feel the world bank is
- 5:28hypocritical in saying that it's
- 5:31alleviated poverty
- 5:33and this one as well masters of delusion
- 5:35the world bank and the poverty of
- 5:37nations
- 5:38so you spend some time looking through
- 5:40these books
- 5:42looking through other sources after some
- 5:45time
- 5:46you may dig down to this book
- 5:49the new conventions of an economic
- 5:51hitman we talked about the
- 5:53importance of authority and how
- 5:55authority is conferred in different ways
- 5:58sometimes by experience this person john
- 6:01perkins has
- 6:0220 years experience working for the
- 6:04world bank so i would consider him very
- 6:07authoritative and i've highlighted in
- 6:10yellow
- 6:11some of the most unflattering things he
- 6:14says about the world bank
- 6:16among them the most disturbing that he
- 6:19said the world
- 6:20bank projects brought untold suffering
- 6:22to some of the planet's poorest people
- 6:26so in short if i had just gone with that
- 6:30first
- 6:30book i would have no idea that the world
- 6:33bank was
- 6:34not the perfect
- 6:37and successful institution that it sort
- 6:41of portrays itself to be
- 6:43we always want to be a little careful of
- 6:46taking
- 6:47the word of the person
- 6:50responsible for the information alone we
- 6:53want to go out and find
- 6:54other opinions as well
