- 0:00multiculturalism does not serve modern
- 0:02society
- 0:03what what did he say it's safe to say
- 0:07that we're living in a multicultural
- 0:08environment particularly in the West for
- 0:10example in Ireland one in eight people
- 0:12come from a culturally diverse
- 0:13background and when we look at younger
- 0:16Generations we see the largest
- 0:17population of culturally and ethnically
- 0:19diverse people to proudly call
- 0:21themselves Irish myself included
- 0:24but what we're actually seeing now as a
- 0:27result of this Multicultural environment
- 0:28is toxic polarization and divisions that
- 0:32are now really being exploited in online
- 0:34and in digital media spaces so what's
- 0:37happening here aren't we supposed to be
- 0:39more tolerant given the fact that we are
- 0:40in a multicultural environment social
- 0:43psychology paints a different picture
- 0:46hi my name is I am a social psychologist
- 0:49and the founder of garm and if you want
- 0:51to learn how to unify cross differences
- 0:52make sure to subscribe
- 0:54having a Multicultural Society does not
- 0:57necessarily mean that we're winning in
- 0:59the diversity game yes ethnic diversity
- 1:01is a reality but it's not an indicator
- 1:04of social cohesion or integration
- 1:06between communities you see being a
- 1:09Multicultural Society does not really
- 1:11mean that we're playing out
- 1:12multiculturalism in our everyday lives
- 1:15the truth is that multiculturalism and
- 1:18other terms such as assimilation
- 1:19integration interculturalism are ideas
- 1:22of how we manage and deal with diversity
- 1:25in our everyday lives so when we talk
- 1:27about multiculturalism it's the way in
- 1:29which governments people organizations
- 1:32and Society at large think of deal with
- 1:35and play out diversity when it comes to
- 1:38our everyday lives
- 1:39[Music]
- 1:42environments we value give access and
- 1:45respect the differences that come with
- 1:48different identities and different
- 1:49cultural backgrounds in a given
- 1:51environment this is particularly
- 1:53important when it comes to respecting
- 1:55underrepresented or minoritized
- 1:57communities in a given State however
- 2:01bombastic side eye traditional
- 2:04understandings of multiculturalism tend
- 2:07to focus on group-based differences of
- 2:09course we're all different and it's
- 2:11something that we should be celebrated
- 2:12but when those differences are the
- 2:14things that are solely emphasized all
- 2:17the time this can actually lead to more
- 2:20separation more division more
- 2:22stereotyping and more Prejudice and what
- 2:26social psychologists have found is that
- 2:28when we emphasize all the time these
- 2:31group-based differences this could
- 2:32actually lead to what we call othering
- 2:35and othering is when we neatly Define
- 2:37Who belongs and who does not belong in a
- 2:40given Society
- 2:42it's when we decipher who has access and
- 2:45privilege to certain things in our
- 2:47community and who is to blame for the
- 2:49shortcomings of why there are more
- 2:51powerful structures particularly when
- 2:53there's limited resources
- 2:56given the sharp skew to better attitudes
- 2:59towards diversity in Western societies
- 3:01which has proved to be positive towards
- 3:05minoritized or traditionally other
- 3:06communities promoting human rights
- 3:09Equity belonging however researchers
- 3:13have shown that
- 3:14people in minoritized communities tend
- 3:16to really like multiculturalism because
- 3:18it helps them better understand and keep
- 3:20their identities but they've actually
- 3:22found that people in majority groups
- 3:25some people tend to feel it as
- 3:27threatening towards their identity
- 3:29this can not only further the process of
- 3:31othering for already vulnerable
- 3:33communities because in this case
- 3:34majority group holds the power it can
- 3:37actually have the majority members
- 3:39feeling like they're left out of the
- 3:42conversation which can actually lead to
- 3:46self-segregation and the likelihood of
- 3:48people being pulled into extreme ideas
- 3:51that can harm wider Society social
- 3:53psychologists have found that some
- 3:55Multicultural initiatives can actually
- 3:58make Prejudice worse
- 4:02particularly when it's presented in a
- 4:04way that the majority group seed as
- 4:07coercive or they're being forced to do
- 4:10it they found that how the initiatives
- 4:13were framed and the motivations behind
- 4:16it both internally and externally are
- 4:19often indicators to the effectiveness of
- 4:22Multicultural initiatives or diversity
- 4:24incentives particularly tackling
- 4:26Prejudice systemic inequalities and
- 4:30institutional and structural racism
- 4:33so what can we learn from this yes
- 4:35traditional forms and understandings of
- 4:38multiculturalism has been a great
- 4:40starting point in terms of improving the
- 4:42conditions of traditionally minoritized
- 4:44or othered communities it's been a model
- 4:47where differences are seen they're
- 4:49promoted they're tried to be accepted
- 4:52but not necessarily respected between
- 4:56communities
- 4:57what I'm saying here is that if we do
- 5:00not focus on inter-group relations when
- 5:03it comes to promoting diversity and how
- 5:05different communities can come together
- 5:07and engage across lines of differences
- 5:10I'm afraid that we're going to be doing
- 5:11ourselves a disservice what's going to
- 5:14happen is that we will continue to see
- 5:16people being drawn into ideas that
- 5:19really promote and really feed into
- 5:21their concerns and anxieties of these
- 5:24other communities we need to move Beyond
- 5:27traditional ideas of multiculturalism
- 5:29which can in fact bring more hate
- 5:31Prejudice and divisions in society and
- 5:34move towards a society that positively
- 5:36Bridges engages and unifies across
- 5:39differences
- 5:41so what is this idea called This is
- 5:44called interculturalism in an
- 5:45Intercultural Society not only do we
- 5:47promote this idea of differences between
- 5:49ourselves but we actually engage in the
- 5:52commonalities too in an Intercultural
- 5:54Society we actually positively engage
- 5:57with people who are different from us
- 5:59through Intercultural dialogue
- 6:01communication or even through our
- 6:02Behavior this not only breaks down
- 6:04divisions breaks down stereotypes and
- 6:07things that we may think of of different
- 6:09communities but it can actually build a
- 6:12more unified Society
- 6:13so how do we actually create an
- 6:16Intercultural Society it's actually done
- 6:18through psychology again soft plug it's
- 6:22done through Intercultural competence so
- 6:25if you want to learn more about
- 6:26interculture competence stay tuned on
- 6:27our Channel and we will teach you how
- 6:32and I hate and
- 6:36[Music]
