  1. 0:05due to an increased number of mrsa
  2. 0:07infections standardized locker room
  3. 0:09procedures need to be enforced
  4. 0:12good afternoon my colleagues dr martinez
  5. 0:15and dr popoff and i are here to talk to
  6. 0:18you about an issue known as mrsa
  7. 0:20methicillin-resistant staphylococcus
  8. 0:23aureosis that is a major problem among
  9. 0:25athletes
  10. 0:27it is a bacterium that causes infections
  11. 0:29in different parts of the body it's
  12. 0:31suffered a treat than most strains of
  13. 0:33staph because it's resistant to some
  14. 0:35commonly used antibiotics the symptoms
  15. 0:38depends on where you're infected
  16. 0:41most often it causes mild infections on
  17. 0:44the skin like sores or boils
  18. 0:47but it can also cause more serious skin
  19. 0:49infections in infected surgical wounds
  20. 0:53the bloodstream the lungs or a urinary
  21. 0:55tract
  22. 0:56mrsa is difficult to treat because it's
  23. 1:00currently considered a super bug
  24. 1:03and now to discuss the signs and
  25. 1:05symptoms of mrsa we have your very own
  26. 1:08local superstar cam newton
  27. 1:14all right to get started
  28. 1:16what caused you to become infected with
  29. 1:19mrsa well a few years ago back when i
  30. 1:21was in college i got hit one of my games
  31. 1:23and one of my wounds open and instead of
  32. 1:26covering with the bandage i hopped in
  33. 1:28the shower and grabbed a dirty towel
  34. 1:30when i got out
  35. 1:31ah
  36. 1:32that's problematic
  37. 1:34all right so what were some of the signs
  38. 1:37and symptoms that you
  39. 1:39that led you to believe that
  40. 1:41you had a possible case of mrsa
  41. 1:44after about two weeks the cut didn't
  42. 1:45heal and it developed into what looked
  43. 1:47like a spider bite and that developed
  44. 1:49into a painful plus filled sore
  45. 1:53so what do you think you could have done
  46. 1:54to prevent it
  47. 1:56i probably could have covered the cut
  48. 1:58right away and and seek immediate
  49. 2:01treatment
  50. 2:02and probably couldn't use a clean towel
  51. 2:05yeah
  52. 2:06all right so thank you so much for
  53. 2:08coming
  54. 2:12here is an early case of mrsa but
  55. 2:15without treatment it can become much
  56. 2:16larger and begin to ooze pus like so
  57. 2:23and now we're going to turn it over to
  58. 2:25dr popoff who will discuss the diagnosis
  59. 2:28of mrsa among athletes
  60. 2:30if an athlete has signs of mrsa they
  61. 2:33must immediately seek medical help from
  62. 2:35a trainer or doctor
  63. 2:37if it is in fact mrsa the boil should be
  64. 2:39drained to obtain a culture of the womb
  65. 2:42a culture is a sample of blood urine
  66. 2:45bodily fluid or a swab of the wound from
  67. 2:48a patient that is sent to the lab for
  68. 2:50testing
  69. 2:51certain cultural results may require
  70. 2:53additional testing due to resistance
  71. 2:56thank you for sharing that important
  72. 2:58information with us dr popoff
  73. 3:00now would you mind addressing how mrsa
  74. 3:02spreads among athletes
  75. 3:04let's spread when you touch another
  76. 3:06person who has mrsa on their skin but
  77. 3:08it's also transmitted by thermites which
  78. 3:11are inadequate objects carrying around
  79. 3:12the bacteria
  80. 3:14currently more and more healthy athletes
  81. 3:16are becoming infected with
  82. 3:18community-associated mrsa also known as
  83. 3:20camrsa
  84. 3:22published reports showed that up to 70
  85. 3:25of infected athletes are hospitalized
  86. 3:27and given antibiotics infection control
  87. 3:30measures are essential in order to
  88. 3:32protect high-risk groups such as
  89. 3:34athletes participating in contact sports
  90. 3:36from contracting ca mrsa
  91. 3:41thank you for your time dr popoff
  92. 3:44and now stay tuned for upcoming topics
  93. 3:47on
  94. 3:48treatment
  95. 3:49effects of the disease
  96. 3:51athletes most at risk
  97. 3:53and prevention among athletes also after
  98. 3:56the break we'll be having a live
  99. 3:58demonstration on effective procedures to
  100. 4:01reduce the spread of mrsa among athletes
  101. 4:04following this demonstration we will
  102. 4:06conclude with risk factors
  103. 4:08what corporations such as the nfl are
  104. 4:11doing
  105. 4:12and facilities management after
  106. 4:14infection
  107. 4:16and now for the effects of mrsa on
  108. 4:18athletes
  109. 4:20currently the most severe effects among
  110. 4:22athletes are amputations of body parts
  111. 4:25such as arms legs hands or feet
  112. 4:29um along with hospitalization for
  113. 4:31extended periods of time
  114. 4:34dr martinez did you know that athletes
  115. 4:37participating in contact sports are at
  116. 4:39increased risk for skin and soft tissue
  117. 4:42infections because of the frequency of
  118. 4:44skin trauma and crowded conditions
  119. 4:47the following sports
  120. 4:49are at risk for contracting mrsa
  121. 4:52football rugby wrestling basketball and
  122. 4:55soccer
  123. 4:57all right so now let's talk about some
  124. 4:58of the risk factors that
  125. 5:01are
  126. 5:02involved with mrsa
  127. 5:04which are also associated with athletic
  128. 5:06training facilities and locker rooms
  129. 5:09ca verso spreads easily in lock in
  130. 5:12facilities that do not take preventative
  131. 5:15measures geared towards hygiene
  132. 5:16education
  133. 5:18implementing effective cleaning routines
  134. 5:21and seeking immediate medical action
  135. 5:25the following factors contribute to the
  136. 5:27likelihood of getting mrsa
  137. 5:30direct contact player position
  138. 5:33sharing facilities equipment and
  139. 5:36personal items
  140. 5:37can promised skin barriers from an
  141. 5:39athletic injury

  143. 5:44athletic turf ingrown toenails
  144. 5:47locker room handles whirlpools
  145. 5:50and
  146. 5:51water coolers
  147. 5:53wow thank you
  148. 5:55now let's go on to prevention among
  149. 5:57athletes the cdc and other prominent
  150. 6:00sources have stressed that
  151. 6:03good personal hygiene is key to
  152. 6:05prevention and control of community mrsa
  153. 6:08outbreaks
  154. 6:09practices of excellent personal hygiene
  155. 6:12among athletes include
  156. 6:14frequent hand washing covering abrasions

  158. 6:18forbidding athletes with open wounds
  159. 6:21from using saunas or whirlpools
  160. 6:24discouraging shared personal items such
  161. 6:27as towels razors
  162. 6:29sew shower shoes
  163. 6:31requiring showers after all games and
  164. 6:34practices
  165. 6:36wearing those shower shoes when you get

  174. 6:56wearing protective gear so you don't get

  177. 7:02contact
  178. 7:04players who have inadequate hygiene
  179. 7:06practices must be excluded from practice
  180. 7:09and competition the risks are too high
  181. 7:12standardized locker room procedures need
