- 0:20surprised to see that you that ever
- 0:22happens much of that go on behind the
- 0:24scenes on your show
- 0:25goof ups sometimes things don't go right
- 0:28in the neighborhood
- 0:38but i did get that thing up uh-huh oh
- 0:40good good um you can see that someday uh

- 1:02you have provided hours and hours of
- 1:04entertainment and education for young
- 1:06people what was your own uh childhood
- 1:08like your early years like
- 1:10i was an only child until my sister came
- 1:13when i was 11 years old
- 1:16and i had to make up a lot of my own
- 1:18play my own friends
- 1:20and so i would dip into my bag of
- 1:22puppets and make them
- 1:24talk uh king friday the 13th you know
- 1:28speaks like this and lady elaine
- 1:30fairchild would be glad to be here
- 1:33did uh
- 1:34did this
- 1:35bother mom and dad
- 1:37i mean
- 1:38i mean you know
- 1:40that i would speak to myself yeah you
- 1:42were sitting in the room maybe talking
- 1:43to yourself
- 1:45happily it didn't
- 1:48what is uh uh then you got into
- 1:51television early didn't you after uh 30
- 1:54years ago i came right here
- 1:56to nbc and was a floor manager right in
- 1:59these studios
- 2:00i remember the horn and heart art
- 2:02children's hour
- 2:04in this studio it was terrible
- 2:08people would bring their little children
- 2:10and make them perform
- 2:11do you remember it no i don't remember
- 2:13that was it a network show or a local
- 2:15show or it was local and they would just
- 2:16bring kids in and let them yeah
- 2:19any other shows that you worked on that
- 2:21well the hit parade up in 8h
- 2:25and the nbc offer theater
- 2:27my degree was in music you know i write
- 2:29all the music for the program
- 2:31incidentally paul we don't have enough
- 2:32time for that song
- 2:35that's what they told me told you not
- 2:37enough time for the song okay well maybe
- 2:38you can paul and get together after the
- 2:40show
- 2:43i mean if you rehearsed it no sense in
- 2:45wasting the song um now it's interesting
- 2:48i believe you pointed out the irony of
- 2:49the fact that in this building now where
- 2:51you started out your broadcasting career
- 2:53there is now a show that occasionally
- 2:54has a performer doing an impression or
- 2:56an imitation of you
- 2:58that's right i just met him a little bit
- 3:01ago do you think we could see that well
- 3:03certainly
- 3:04eddie
- 3:06[Applause]
- 3:13[Music]
- 3:16murphy that's uh mr rogers there in the
- 3:19uh
- 3:21yeah
- 3:23on the left on the left too uh now how
- 3:26do you react to that uh we talked to
- 3:28andy rooney about someone doing an
- 3:29impression of him and he didn't seem too
- 3:31keen on it
- 3:32well some of them aren't very funny but
- 3:34i think that uh that a lot of them are
- 3:37done
- 3:38with the
- 3:40with real kindness in their hearts
- 3:44do you think that do you think that's it
- 3:49there is one person on radio that really
- 3:52bothers me though i i've heard it's
- 3:55somewhere in the in the mid south
- 3:58and he tells children in my voice
- 4:02to
- 4:03do such things as get their mother's
- 4:05hair spray
- 4:07and their father's cigarette lighter and
- 4:09put them together
- 4:13and
- 4:14he thinks that he's talking to adults
- 4:16but he's really talking with children
- 4:18and i
- 4:19i think that could cause a lot of fires
- 4:22yeah that would
- 4:24well that's right you know
- 4:26you're exactly right it would blow up
- 4:28yeah it would burn and be highly
- 4:30volatile you you have uh um
- 4:33i'm sorry you're out here so late i
- 4:34would like to ask you to come back and
- 4:36you have a show coming up on pbs just
