- 0:12For us Indians, food or meals are not
- 0:16just a way to fill our stomachs. It is
- 0:20linked to honor, respect, emotions,
- 0:23belonging, and faith. And you must have
- 0:28heard some people say that we have a '
- 0:29roti-beti'(bread and daughter)
- 0:31relationship with a certain family.
- 0:34Meaning, they compare the daughter, a
- 0:36piece of one's heart, with food. What a
- 0:39beautiful thought that is. So today,
- 0:42why shouldn't we invite a daughter to '
- 0:45Swad aur Sangeet'? So, please welcome.
- 0:48In our tradition of 'Swad aur Sangeet',
- 0:51please welcome Jabalpur's daughter,
- 0:54Khandwa's darling, the daughter not
- 0:57just of Madhya Pradesh but of all of
- 1:00India, the pride, Prajakta Shukre,
- 1:03along with her father, Mr. Rajendra
- 1:06Shukre, and her mother, Renu Shukre.
- 1:12Yes, the very same daughter, Prajakta,
- 1:15whom you saw in the most famous season
- 1:17of Indian Idol, Season One. There, she
- 1:21hoisted the flag of her popularity. She
- 1:23worked in 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar' and
- 1:25also appeared in Marathi Bigg Boss
- 1:28Season Six, where she became everyone's
- 1:30favorite.
- 1:31>> Prajakta.
- 1:32>> Yes.
- 1:33>> Welcome to our tradition of 'Swad aur
- 1:35Sangeet'.
- 1:36>> Thank you so much.
- 1:37>> Child, tell me, you appeared in Indian
- 1:40Idol Season One, which was a very
- 1:43successful program. After that, you
- 1:46appeared in many more reality shows.
- 1:49You traveled the journey from a little
- 1:51girl to becoming a music star. Earlier,
- 1:54you were called the daughter of
- 1:56Jabalpur. Then you were called a '
- 1:58Mumbai girl'. You have been in Mumbai
- 2:00for so many years. So, you must miss
- 2:03Khandwa, Jabalpur, and Madhya Pradesh.
- 2:06>> Do you miss them? Absolutely.
- 2:07>> Tell us something.
- 2:09>> So, in Khandwa, I was very small. I was
- 2:12born there, and I still remember that
- 2:14house in Khandwa very well. It was our
- 2:16very beautiful and lovely home. It had
- 2:18a simple courtyard. There were many
- 2:20trees in it that were my friends.
- 2:22>> So, I really love that house. And in
- 2:26Jabalpur, I was at an age where I could
- 2:28understand things. I was growing up a
- 2:31bit. I mean, I was in Jabalpur from
- 2:32sixth to twelfth grade. So, there is a
- 2:34different connection with Jabalpur.
- 2:35Definitely. Renu ji, you are a singer
- 2:39yourself. You are a music teacher. You
- 2:42have seen Prajakta's musical journey
- 2:44from the very beginning. So, what has
- 2:48your experience been? What kind of
- 2:50thoughts did you have? Tell us
- 2:52something.
- 2:53>> About Prajakta, I will tell you this.
- 2:55When she was very small,
- 2:56>> I think she must have been three years
- 2:58old.
- 2:59>> I used to make rotis and would just
- 3:01sing a 'taan'. Any 'taan' from any raga
- 3:03or anything, because I had done my MA
- 3:06and girls used to come to me to learn.
- 3:09>> So, she would hear that 'taan' and
- 3:11immediately sing it back in 'aakaar'.
- 3:14>> That's when I felt that such a little
- 3:16girl could sing taans in Aakar, it
- 3:18meant there was something unique about
- 3:20her. Yes, I had taught her the Bhup
- 3:23raga, and she would sing the entire
- 3:25Bhupali raga so well.
- 3:27>> Taans and Chhota Khayal at such a young
- 3:29age, and like the 11th or 12 th-grade
- 3:31girls who came to learn from me, I used
- 3:34to teach them ragas like Todi, she
- 3:36would sing the Chhota Khayal of that
- 3:38too just like that. So they used to
- 3:40wonder how such a young girl, even with
- 3:42a raga like Todi, which they didn't
- 3:43understand, how could she sing it?
- 3:45Because it's difficult, the raga is
- 3:47hard, we don't understand it, so how
- 3:49does she catch it so well!
- 3:51>> Thank you. Prajakta came on reality
- 3:53shows, Indian Idol was a very popular
- 3:56program. You are proud parents; you
- 3:59brought your little daughter there, so
- 4:02what have your experiences been as
- 4:05parents in this journey from then until
- 4:08today? Tell us something.
- 4:10>> I took her myself to Mumbai for the
- 4:12Indian Idol audition.
- 4:14>> The first audition.
- 4:16>> What they call the first audition, and
- 4:18there for the first time I saw such a
- 4:21grand show and such long lines, there
- 4:23were at least 10,000 people.
- 4:26>> Not less than that. For the rest of the
- 4:28time in her musical journey, her mother
- 4:30has been with her.
- 4:32>> So her mother has supported her more
- 4:35than I have.
- 4:36>> My initial job was already done.
- 4:41>> Look, Prajakta has come to 'Swad aur
- 4:43Sangeet' today, and since she is from
- 4:45Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, we will first
- 4:48listen to a wonderful Nimadi song from
- 4:50her. After that, keep watching to see
- 4:53what else is in this treasure chest.
- 4:56Let's begin.
- 4:58>> So Prajakta, all four of us sitting
- 4:59here are from Madhya Pradesh, and the
- 5:01people before this were all also from
- 5:03Madhya Pradesh. So let's have some
- 5:05music from Madhya Pradesh itself. That
- 5:06is our request to you.
- 5:07>> That is absolutely the right thing to
- 5:09do. And today, after many years, I
- 5:12remembered that folk song which I
- 5:14learned first in my life. I learned it
- 5:16from Mommy. I used to sing it in school
- 5:18in Dhar, and all my teachers and my
- 5:20principal sir in Dhar liked it very
- 5:22much, and wherever I was, they would
- 5:24catch me and say, "Child, sing those
- 5:26two lines," the one like that.
- 5:28>> Wow, that's great.
- 5:29>> So let's sing that today. Aaloo ki mana
- 5:40, aaloo ki mana sabzi banayi. Hunu no
- 5:44kar ka, aaloo ki mana sabzi banayi. Hu
- 5:49no no kar ka, hunu no kar ka, haan hu
- 5:53no kar ka, hu nun kar ka, haan hu no
- 5:56kar ka. Aaloo ki, aaloo ki bhana, aaloo
- 6:02ki ma sabzi banayi. Hu no kar, aaloo ki
- 6:07ma sabzi banayi. Hu no karo, no no kar,
- 6:14hu no kar, hu no kar, hu no kar. Aloo
- 6:21ki mana, aloo ki mana, aloo ki mana
- 6:25sabzi banai. Hu no kar, aloo ki ghana
- 6:30sabzi banai. My father-in-law went to
- 6:35sleep, taking in the cool air. My
- 6:38father-in-law went to sleep, taking in
- 6:40the cool air. My mother-in-law is
- 6:44looking, with a side-eye. My
- 6:47mother-in-law is looking, side-eyeing,
- 6:50because of the potatoes.
- 6:53>> Because of the potatoes, because of the
- 6:57potatoes, she made the dish, hu nu kar,
- 7:00she made the potato dish.
- 7:06>> It’s the same jab for the
- 7:08brother-in-law too.
- 7:08>> Yes.
- 7:09>> Everyone in this house is just sleeping
- 7:11.
- 7:12>> After eating a bellyful of potato curry
- 7:13, this is what happens, right?
- 7:15>> A fair breaks out. A fair breaks out.
- 7:19>> So next up is, my brother-in-law went
- 7:22to sleep, taking in the cool air. My
- 7:26brother-in-law went to sleep, taking in
- 7:28the cool air, right? My sister-in-law
- 7:31is looking, side-eyeing. My
- 7:34sister-in-law is looking, with a
- 7:37side-eye, right? Because of the
- 7:40potatoes, because of the potatoes, she
- 7:43made the potato dish, hu nu no kar.
- 7:46What? She made the potato dish, hu nu
- 7:50no kar, right? Hu nu no kar, right? Hu
- 7:54no what? Ho what? Because of the
- 8:02potatoes, because of the, she made the
- 8:06potato dish, hu nu no kar. She made the
- 8:10potato dish, hu nu no kar. She made the
- 8:15potato dish, hu nu no kar.
- 8:21>> What?
- 8:22>> Our first special today is Chane ki
- 8:25Bhaji (gram greens). It is eaten all
- 8:29over India, but people in the Malwa,
- 8:31Nimar, and Bundelkhand regions of
- 8:33Madhya Pradesh enjoy it greatly under
- 8:35different names. It is an immunity
- 8:38booster, and the taste is wonderful.
- 8:42Although gram is harvested in the
- 8:44winter, in October-November, and it is
- 8:46eaten fresh then, but to enjoy it
- 8:48year-round, people dry and store it to
- 8:51eat all year long. Now look, when Dev
- 8:56Uthani Gyaras arrives, I have seen
- 9:00ladies in our Madhya Pradesh take
- 9:03gooseberries, berries, and these greens
- 9:06, saying, "Bor, bhaji, amla, and arise,
- 9:10O dark-complexioned God." These are
- 9:14childhood memories. Let's make Chane ki
- 9:18Bhaji. See, this is the dried Chane ki
- 9:21Bhaji; there might be some stems in it,
- 9:24so pick them out and clean them. The
- 9:27season for these greens is usually
- 9:30during the gram harvest, meaning
- 9:32October-November, but if one wants to
- 9:35enjoy it year-round, people dry and
- 9:37store it. This is the dried Chane ki
- 9:40Bhaji, an immunity booster, wonderful
- 9:42to eat. This is Chane ki Bhaji. To make
- 9:46chana greens with toor dal, see, I have
- 9:49taken toor dal and boiled it to about
- 9:5280%, I didn't use a pressure cooker.
- 9:55And yes, I added two cloves of peeled
- 9:58garlic to it. Because some people
- 10:01believe that eating toor dal can cause
- 10:03gas and acidity. To fix that, see,
- 10:06these are boiled berries I kept ready.
- 10:11We add these to the chana greens. It
- 10:14adds a wonderful flavor. Now we mix
- 10:18these chana greens into the toor dal.
- 10:26And add these berries to the chana
- 10:28greens as well. It already looks so
- 10:32beautiful. Look. Now I am preparing to
- 10:45temper it, which means preparing to fry
- 10:48it. I have taken oil in a pan. Use
- 10:52whatever oil you prefer. Now add
- 10:57mustard seeds to it. Then add cumin
- 11:04seeds. Let both of them sizzle well.
- 11:09Then add chopped garlic. Now when the
- 11:24garlic turns slightly golden, add
- 11:28onions to it. Now fry the onions well.
- 11:48Chopped green chilies, ginger paste.
- 11:57Now our onions have turned golden in
- 12:00color. Now we have added whole
- 12:02coriander seeds after crushing them
- 12:03slightly by hand. Coriander has a very
- 12:06special importance here. Add ground red
- 12:18chili powder. Add salt according to
- 12:29your taste. And now add the greens to
- 12:40this. Now we will add a tempering of
- 13:10asafoetida, mustard seeds, and red
- 13:13chili. And along with this, another
- 13:29special thing is eaten which we call '
- 13:31baghar'. I told you in the first
- 13:33episode that this is Madhya Pradesh's
- 13:35gunpowder. If you want to learn 'baghar
- 13:37', then watch the first episode about
- 13:40Amari greens, you will find the recipe
- 13:42there. Now, since Prajakta is from
- 13:45Madhya Pradesh, we are making chana
- 13:48greens. She is a Mumbai girl, meaning
- 13:51she lives in Maharashtra. We also live
- 13:53in Maharashtra. So we will also make a
- 13:55Maharashtrian dish. A friend of mine
- 13:58taught me 'Kakdi Cha Korla'. A
- 14:01wonderful dish is made from cucumber.
- 14:03Today I will try that. It will be fun.
- 14:06This 'Kakdi Cha Korla' recipe is
- 14:08actually very simple. But I have also
- 14:11added some of my own experiments to it.
- 14:13Heat oil in a pot. Add mustard seeds
- 14:18and cumin seeds to it and let them
- 14:22splutter. Add this bit of ground
- 14:31coriander, Onion, Garlic, these green
- 14:41chilies. Now look, these onions are
- 14:44turning slightly golden. Add some
- 14:47ground ginger to it. And I have also
- 14:52added curry leaves. Now look, I have
- 15:00chopped tomatoes ready. Add these
- 15:03tomatoes. We will cook it well. Cook
- 15:16the tomatoes until they start to
- 15:18release their water. Now, add salt to
- 15:21it according to your taste. Now look, I
- 15:28had already grated the cucumber to make
- 15:33Kakdi Cha Korla. Look at this. So, the
- 15:38gram flour (besan) cooks in this, with
- 15:40the cucumber's water and its aroma. So,
- 15:44we will add this cucumber to it. Look
- 15:48at this. It releases a lot of water now
- 15:51. What have we done? See, I have
- 15:54already dry-roasted the gram flour
- 15:57beforehand. Add this to it. And some
- 16:01people add raw gram flour, because it
- 16:04cooks in the cucumber's water itself.
- 16:11Add a little bit of turmeric too. Now
- 16:14you have to keep stirring it constantly
- 16:15. Because the cucumber will release a
- 16:18lot of water, and with its aroma, the
- 16:20gram flour will cook, sir. See what a
- 16:23great flavor it gets. Just look. Keep
- 16:28stirring it constantly, otherwise, it
- 16:30will get lumpy. Now our Kakdi Cha Korla
- 16:37is almost ready. Squeeze a little lemon
- 16:40into it. There you go. Add a teaspoon
- 16:44of sugar over the top like this. It
- 16:47enhances the taste. Add chopped
- 16:51coriander. Look how beautiful it looks.
- 16:59I forgot to mention this earlier. I
- 17:01have also added a little bit of
- 17:02asafoetida (hing) to it. Asafoetida
- 17:04enhances the flavor and it is eaten
- 17:06with Jowar roti. So, you have prepared
- 17:08the Jowar roti. This all looks so
- 17:23delicious, doesn't it?
- 17:25>> It makes you want to dig right in.
- 17:27>> So that was about taste, now let's talk
- 17:29about music. Prajakta is from MP, grew
- 17:33up in Khandwa and Jabalpur, she is a
- 17:35Maharashtrian girl, and Mumbai is our
- 17:38field of work. So we will talk about
- 17:41this too, sing a song, let's see what
- 17:44happens. So let's begin.
- 17:46>> So Prajakta, by birth you are a
- 17:48daughter of Mother Narmada, and by work
- 17:51, you are a Mumbai girl.
- 17:53>> Yes, absolutely, my mother tongue is
- 17:55Marathi.
- 17:55>> So, let's have something in Marathi too
- 17:58.
- 17:59>> And since my mother tongue is Marathi,
- 18:02my mother has composed the song. Its
- 18:06title is 'Raat Rani'.
- 18:08>> And it's written by my uncle (Masa ji),
- 18:10his name is Vijay Kelkar, and my
- 18:12mother's name is Renu Shukre.
- 18:14>> So, let's sing this.
- 18:15>> And we have heard this song from you
- 18:17before, it's a beautiful song, and it
- 18:18is available on every platform, please
- 18:20go and stream it too.
- 18:22>> Sweet, thank you. Yes. Yes. Raat Rani.
- 19:01Phool phulli saka raat rani. Phulli
