- 0:00Wait, what is that black spot?
- 0:03>> Drum, drum, feel the beat. Books are
- 0:05smart, let's read and play.
- 0:07>> Smart beats all day.
- 0:11>> A cavity? What's that?
- 0:12>> A cavity is a tiny hole in the tooth
- 0:15caused by germs called bacteria.
- 0:18>> Yuck.
- 0:19>> So, the bacteria made that hole?
- 0:21>> That's right. When we don't brush well,
- 0:23they eat the enamel.
- 0:24>> My strong enamel is getting weaker.
- 0:27>> What is the enamel?
- 0:30>> Before I tell you what is the enamel,
- 0:33let's talk about the tooth parts.
- 0:35>> Hmm.
- 0:36>> Our tooth has [music] two main parts,
- 0:39the crown and the root.
- 0:43The crown has three special layers,
- 0:46enamel, dentin, and pulp.
- 0:49>> This is the enamel, the strongest part
- 0:51[music] of the tooth. It's a super hard
- 0:53shield. It's like armor.
- 0:54>> Exactly.
- 0:56>> But, cavities can break through it.
- 0:59>> We're going inside the tooth?
- 1:01>> Yes. Let's explore its layers.
- 1:03>> Wow!
- 1:04>> [screaming]
- 1:05>> Look, this feels [music] softer. This
- 1:08represents dentin. It supports the tooth
- 1:10structure, but it's easier to damage.
- 1:12>> They're going deeper.
- 1:15>> Let's follow them.
- 1:18>> Wow!
- 1:22This is actually awesome.
- 1:25>> This is the pulp, where the nerve lives.
- 1:27>> Too hot. Too hot.
- 1:30>> Yes, when the cavity reaches the nerve,
- 1:32it hurts.
- 1:32>> So, the nerve is inside the pulp?
- 1:34>> Exactly. [music]
- 1:35>> What do the nerves do?
- 1:37>> I'm the tooth's messenger. When
- 1:39something happens, I quickly send a
- 1:41signal to the brain. If you bite
- 1:42something hard, drink icy water right
- 1:45away.
- 1:46>> The nerve sends super fast messages to
- 1:49the brainstem, telling your brain that
- 1:51something is happening to the tooth.
- 1:53>> So, that's why my tooth hurts when I eat
- 1:56ice cream sometimes?
- 1:57>> Exactly. I'm trying [music] to protect
- 1:59your tooth by telling your brain that
- 2:00something needs attention.
- 2:02>> Healthy teeth keep the nerves safe
- 2:03[music] and comfortable, but decay can
- 2:05expose the nerves and make them very
- 2:07sensitive.
- 2:09Let's continue our adventure.
- 2:11>> [laughter]
- 2:20>> Woah! What is this pink soft texture?
- 2:23>> These are the gums.
- 2:25>> They hold teeth tightly. So, without
- 2:27gums, teeth would fall out.
- 2:29>> Exactly. They're super important.
- 2:31>> And what is hiding under the gum?
- 2:35>> The root.
- 2:36It's the part of the tooth you can't
- 2:38see.
- 2:42>> What does the root do?
- 2:44>> It holds the tooth tightly in the jaw
- 2:46and helps keep it healthy.
- 2:49>> Let's continue our adventure.
- 2:53Look, we found the tonsils.
- 2:55Hi tonsils. What do you do?
- 2:58>> [laughter]
- 3:00[music]
- 3:02>> We're tiny guards.
- 3:04>> We help catch germs and help keep your
- 3:06body healthy.
- 3:07>> Thank you, tonsils, for protecting us.
- 3:11Let's go and tell Dad about what we
- 3:12learned.
- 3:13>> [laughter]
- 3:15[crying]
- 3:17>> Brush your teeth [music] every morning
- 3:19and every night. Use floss to clean
- 3:22between them. Clean your tongue to keep
- 3:24it fresh. Visit your dentist, too. See
- 3:26you next time.
- 3:27>> It is fact time.
- 3:31>> [music]
- 3:33>> Wait, did you know that we have four
- 3:35different types of teeth? [music]
- 3:36Incisors are for cutting.
- 3:38Canines are for tearing.
- 3:41Premolars help crush food and molars do
- 3:44the big chewing.
- 3:46Here's another fun fact. Kids have 20
- 3:49baby teeth.
- 3:50>> When we grow up, we usually have 32
- 3:52adult teeth. See you next time.
