- 0:00Drum, drum, feel the beat. Books are
- 0:02smart, let's read and play.
- 0:03>> SMART BEATS ALL DAY.
- 0:07>> WOW, DAD EATS so fast. But, have you
- 0:11ever wondered what happens to the food
- 0:13after we eat?
- 0:16Where? On the food? Looks like we're
- 0:19about to go inside Dad's mouth. Look.
- 0:23What are those big doors? Those are the
- 0:25lips. They help keep food inside the
- 0:27mouth and help you speak and smile.
- 0:29Let's go inside.
- 0:38Woah, look at how huge the tongue looks
- 0:40from down here. Yeah, and look at look
- 0:43at those bumps. Those are the taste buds
- 0:46that help us taste food.
- 0:48Without it, ice cream, pizza, and
- 0:51chocolate would all taste the same. The
- 0:54tongue has thousands of tiny taste buds,
- 0:56so that's how we know if something is
- 0:58sweet, salty, sour, or bitter. Exactly,
- 1:03but tasting isn't its only job. Really?
- 1:06What else does it do? When we chew food,
- 1:09the tongue moves it around the mouth and
- 1:11pushes [music] it toward the teeth. And
- 1:13when we're ready to swallow, the tongue
- 1:15pushes the food to the back of the
- 1:17mouth.
- 1:18That's not all, the tongue also helps us
- 1:21talk. [music] Wait, you mean we need it
- 1:23to say words? Yep, try saying la la la
- 1:27or ta ta ta. Your tongue is working
- 1:29hard. You're right. My tongue is moving
- 1:33all over the place. So, the tongue helps
- 1:36us taste, chew, swallow, and speak. Hey,
- 1:40look up there. What's that little thing
- 1:43hanging at the back? Oh, that is called
- 1:46the uvula. The uvula helps us make
- 1:48sounds when we talk and helps keep the
- 1:50back of the mouth comfortable.
- 1:52Comfortable? Yes, the uvulas keep the
- 1:55throat moist by producing a little
- 1:58saliva. Saliva? What does that mean? It
- 2:01helps make food soft and wet. But where
- 2:04does saliva come from?
- 2:06It comes from tiny organs called
- 2:08salivary glands. So they are like little
- 2:11saliva factories. Yes, they make saliva
- 2:14mouth when we need it. Do they only help
- 2:16us eat? Nope. Saliva also helps protect
- 2:19our teeth by washing away food pieces.
- 2:23>> [bell]
- 2:25>> And it also helps us taste food. Saliva
- 2:27carries flavors to our taste buds. So
- 2:29our mouth needs saliva to taste, [music]
- 2:32chew, swallow, and stay healthy.
- 2:34Exactly. Let's continue exploring. Wow,
- 2:38the top of our mouth has different
- 2:40parts. That's right. It's called the
- 2:42palate
- 2:43>> [music]
- 2:43>> and it has two parts, the hard palate
- 2:46and the soft palate. This is the hard
- 2:48palate. It's the strong [music] bony
- 2:50part at the front. It helps with
- 2:52chewing, speaking, and separates the
- 2:54[music] mouth from the nose. This is the
- 2:56soft palate. It's flexible and helps
- 2:59with swallowing and speaking.
- 3:02Together they help us eat and talk every
- 3:04day.
- 3:07Every part of our mouth has an important
- 3:09job. Wait, what is that black spot?
