- 0:00I think we still have a chance to win
- 0:01that league, because maybe the
- 0:03punishment Man City with points and
- 0:05maybe we win that league.
- 0:07>> For 8 years a man who had won two
- 0:09Champions Leagues kept defending [music]
- 0:10a second place finish with Manchester
- 0:12United and almost nobody understood why
- 0:14it mattered so much to him. [music]
- 0:15>> One of the best jobs of my career to
- 0:18finish second with Manchester United in
- 0:20the Premier League. I keep saying this
- 0:22because people doesn't know what is
- 0:23going behind the scenes.
- 0:24>> Then on September 25th, 2026, Rio
- 0:27Ferdinand posts a message [music] and
- 0:29another for Jose.
- 0:30>> What's Jose talking about? But now years
- 0:32to come, you're right.
- 0:33>> And maybe there is a chance of we win
- 0:35that league, no?
- 0:35>> Less than an hour earlier news broke
- 0:37that Manchester City had been found
- 0:39liable on 114 of 115 Premier League
- 0:43charges.
- 0:44>> I'm not saying Man City is guilty. I'm
- 0:46saying if you are not guilty, you don't
- 0:48pay. Why you pay 8 or 9 million or
- 0:51whatever if you are not guilty?
- 0:53>> In August 2018, [music]
- 0:54Manchester United lose 3 to 0 to
- 0:56Tottenham at Old Trafford. Four days
- 0:58later, he is asked whether he is still a
- 1:00great manager.
- 1:01>> Three for me and two for them.
- 1:04Respect. Respect.
- 1:06>> At the time it sounded like classic
- 1:07Mourinho protecting his reputation after
- 1:09finishing 19 points [music] behind City.
- 1:11But he never let that season go. And
- 1:13once United sacked him, Mourinho finally
- 1:15explained why that second place meant so
- 1:17much to him. People don't know what is
- 1:19going on behind the scenes. At first,
- 1:21everyone assumed he was talking about
- 1:22Manchester United. And inside United,
- 1:25Mourinho's problem was simple. He was
- 1:27being held responsible for closing the
- 1:29gap to City without having the power to
- 1:31build the team he believed could close
- 1:33it.
- 1:33>> Can we buy six, seven players at the
- 1:36same time? Can we invest 600, 700? No.
- 1:40>> So what did Guardiola have on the other
- 1:41side of Manchester? After his first
- 1:43trophyless season, Guardiola was allowed
- 1:45to rebuild almost his entire backline.
- 1:48>> He has Zabaleta and Kolarov, two very
- 1:50good players, but more than 30 years
- 1:53old. He wants to replace. He doesn't
- 1:55replace with two, he replace with three.
- 1:57>> In November 2018, leaked City emails
- 2:00suggest that some money presented as
- 2:02sponsorship income actually came from
- 2:03the club's owner. Suddenly, what
- 2:05Mourinho had been hinting at behind the
- 2:07scenes did not sound so easy to dismiss.
- 2:09>> One thing is a big club and another
- 2:10thing is a big football team. And now,
- 2:12Manchester City, they buy full backs for
- 2:14the price of the strikers. So, when you
- 2:16you speak about big football big
- 2:17football clubs, you are speaking about
- 2:20the history of the club.
- 2:21>> Three years earlier, Mourinho is leading
- 2:23Chelsea in a title race against City
- 2:25when his rival signs Wilfried Bony in
- 2:27the middle of the season. He says Bony
- 2:29is a good player and that he has no
- 2:30problem if City have the money and
- 2:32respect the rules. Then he adds one more
- 2:34line, "Rules are different for City." A
- 2:36few weeks later, when Mourinho is asked
- 2:38how clubs that break financial fair play
- 2:40should be punished, he does not call for
- 2:41a fine or a transfer ban, but for the
- 2:44one punishment that can rewrite a title
- 2:46race, points deductions. [music]
- 2:47This was not a problem Mourinho
- 2:49discovered after finishing 19 points
- 2:51behind City. He was already questioning
- 2:53the rules while he was still at Chelsea.
- 2:55By December 2017, Mourinho's frustration
- 2:57was becoming much more specific. City
- 2:59had Joe Hart and Guardiola signed
- 3:01Claudio Bravo. [music] When Bravo did
- 3:03not work out, Ederson arrived.
- 3:05>> He has the goalkeeper of England. He
- 3:06doesn't like him.
- 3:08He buy the goalkeeper of Barcelona. He
- 3:10doesn't like him. He buy another one.
- 3:13Now he likes.
- 3:14>> And then he says the line the media will
- 3:15dig up years later.
- 3:17>> And there is no limit, there is no
- 3:18financial fair play, there is nothing.
- 3:21You do what you want. It's hard. So, I
- 3:24think my my boys, they are doing what
- 3:26they
- 3:27they can.
- 3:28>> By then, that frustration had already
- 3:30spilled into the tunnel. After City won
- 3:32at Old Trafford to go 11 points clear,
- 3:34their celebrations ended in a
- 3:35confrontation between Mourinho and the
- 3:37same goalkeeper he would soon use as an
- 3:40example of the difference between the
- 3:41two clubs. And after United went out to
- 3:43Sevilla, he arrived with notes to
- 3:45explain what he believed was really
- 3:46separating the two clubs. [music]
- 3:48>> Do you know what is also heritage?
- 3:50Otamendi, Kevin De Bruyne, Fernandinho,
- 3:54Silva, Sterling, Aguero. They are
- 3:57investments from the past.
- 3:59>> In his view, the difference between
- 4:01United and City had been built long
- 4:03before either he or Guardiola arrived.
- 4:05Before Mourinho arrived, United [music]
- 4:07had finished seventh, fourth, fifth, and
- 4:09sixth across four seasons.
- 4:11>> In the last 7 years, the worst position
- 4:14of Manchester City in the Premier League
- 4:16was fourth.
- 4:17>> We cannot act like them.
- 4:20It's not possible. Not possible.
- 4:22>> Before they could clinch the title
- 4:24against United at the Etihad, he said
- 4:26City would be champions because they
- 4:27deserved it. At halftime, United were
- 4:29two to zero down, and the Etihad was
- 4:32preparing for the party. In the dressing
- 4:34room, Mourinho told his players he did
- 4:35not want them to be the clown standing
- 4:37there while City lifted the trophy.
- 4:39[music] United came back to win three to
- 4:41two. After the game, he congratulates
- 4:43Pep on a title that is not yet
- 4:45mathematically won.
- 4:46>> Manchester City have been banned from
- 4:49the Champions League for the next two
- 4:51seasons for breaking financial fair play
- 4:55rules.
- 4:55>> Mourinho left United, but the warnings
- 4:57he had been making about City did not
- 4:59disappear with him. For the first time,
- 5:01the second place finish he had defended
- 5:03for years no longer sounded like just
- 5:05Mourinho protecting his reputation. That
- 5:07moment did not last.
- 5:09>> They won't be banned.
- 5:09>> No.
- 5:10Who would they think? Who would they
- 5:12trust with the with my chairman, with my
- 5:15CEO? Who would they explain to me? I
- 5:16trust them.
- 5:17>> The Court of Arbitration for Sport
- 5:19overturned City's European ban. The club
- 5:21was still fined for failing to cooperate
- 5:23with the investigation, but the ban was
- 5:25gone. Mourinho was no longer joking.
- 5:27>> In relation to the decision, I think uh
- 5:30in any case, is a disgraceful
- 5:34decision.
- 5:35>> Mourinho's logic was simple. If City
- 5:37were not guilty, they should not pay a
- 5:39single pound. If they were guilty, they
- 5:41should have been thrown out of Europe.
- 5:42Pep answered him directly, saying
- 5:44Mourinho and every other manager should
- 5:46understand that City had been wronged
- 5:48and that the club deserved an apology.
- 5:50The UEFA case was over, but Mourinho's
- 5:52argument was not. When the Premier
- 5:53League brought its own case against
- 5:55Manchester City in 2023, the media
- 5:58immediately went back to one of his old
- 5:59lines. There is no financial fair play.
- 6:02And by 2024, Mourinho was no longer just
- 6:04talking about that season.
- 6:06>> If I go into into that analyze, I I I
- 6:09have to ask if the team that finished
- 6:12second in 2018 is going to be champion,
- 6:14yes or no?
- 6:15>> He jokes that United owe him a bonus and
- 6:17a medal for a title he never won. At
- 6:19Anfield, Guardiola holds up six fingers
- 6:21for his six Premier League titles. And
- 6:23when reporters remind him that Mourinho
- 6:25won three, Pep's answer is simple. Jose
- 6:27has three, he has [music] six. Mourinho
- 6:30replies from Istanbul, but he is no
- 6:31longer counting titles. I won fairly and
- 6:34cleanly.
- 6:34>> You can be a rich club and buy the best
- 6:37players in the world, [music] but you
- 6:38cannot buy class. And by by they they
- 6:41showed that clearly.
- 6:42>> While Mourinho spent [music] years
- 6:43questioning what was behind City's
- 6:45success, Guardiola's position was much
- 6:47simpler. He asked the people running the
- 6:49club what had happened, they gave him
- 6:51their explanation, and he [music]
- 6:52believed them. But he had also made one
- 6:54promise.
- 6:55>> I said to them, "If you lied to me, the
- 6:57day after I am not here, I will be out
- 6:59and I will not be your friend anymore. I
- 7:01put my faith in you because I believe
- 7:03you 100% from day one, and I defend the
- 7:05club because [music] of that."
- 7:07>> By the time the ruling came, Guardiola
- 7:09had already left the Manchester City
- 7:11bench. But Guardiola may never have been
- 7:12the most important part of Mourinho's
- 7:14argument.
- 7:15>> I like him a lot and he knows that. He
- 7:17likes me and I know that. It's not true
- 7:19that I want Man City [music] to be
- 7:22relegated. It's true
- 7:24that I like justice.
- 7:25>> For eight years, it looked like Mourinho
- 7:27was trying to explain why he lost to
- 7:29Guardiola. The Premier League case goes
- 7:31back [music] to the 2009-10 season,
- 7:33seven years before Pep even arrived at
- 7:35Manchester City.
- 7:36>> I think [music] sport is basically
- 7:38to win by respecting the rules.
- 7:41>> But Guardiola was never the beginning of
- 7:43the argument. He was simply the man
- 7:44standing on the other side when it
- 7:46became personal. Now Guardiola is gone
- 7:48from the bench [music]
- 7:48and Mourinho is long gone from United
- 7:51and the argument is still alive. For
- 7:52eight years Mourinho kept defending a
- 7:54second place finish everyone else
- 7:56thought was settled. In 2026 it still
- 7:59isn't.
