- 0:02for an hour I'm just fury unleashing
- 0:07against that rock trying to lift it
- 0:09trying to pull the boulder trying to rip
- 0:11my arm free I'm cursing at the rocks
- 0:14banking it is if that's gonna do
- 0:16anything and of course it's just wasted
- 0:20effort that's the thing about that that
- 0:23moment when the boulders fall and we
- 0:25have that response emotions are fine but
- 0:29to be controlled by them to be hijacked
- 0:31by them that's not really serving
- 0:35anybody the best thing that I did then
- 0:38in those those first minutes after the
- 0:40impact and after the the trap had snared
- 0:44me was that I stopped and stopped is a
- 0:49acronym that works pretty well is to go
- 0:52through it s to stop and take a breath
- 0:55and then t think engage your higher
- 0:59brain not just that reptilian response
- 1:01but o make some observations come up
- 1:04with some options P decide on a plan
- 1:08sto P well for me in that moment is as
- 1:11I'm able to to gather myself here we are
- 1:14an hour in but I start taking stock of
- 1:17what I have with me and the food water
- 1:20climbing gear that I have as I'm looking
- 1:22around in the canyon and I see the other
- 1:25boulders that are up above me and I
- 1:27think maybe I can use those to build an
- 1:30anchor to be able to somehow rig up my
- 1:32rope create a pulley system mechanical
- 1:35advantage my way out of this I was an
- 1:37engineer by training profession before
- 1:40this so I'm working through this problem
- 1:43solving using those skills and I think
- 1:46through ok the little slot that I see
- 1:49maybe I could somehow build a fire use
- 1:51the lens from one of my cameras to send
- 1:53light up such a narrow little spot
- 1:57claustrophobic to some but for me that
- 2:00these other rocks maybe I could use
- 2:02those that I could smash into the the
- 2:04boulder and try to loosen it up or break
- 2:07it in half somehow
- 2:10I'm not otherwise injured though I'm not
- 2:12bleeding there's no real first-aid to do
- 2:15it's just ok rationing my food and my
- 2:17water thinking this through what else
- 2:20can I make use of looking behind me I
- 2:21took a picture while I was trapped there
- 2:23of what's in the canyon downstream that
- 2:27rock my arm that possibly small shadow
- 2:29within this first hour as I'm doing the
- 2:32brainstorming and I'm thinking through
- 2:34my options I know the pocketknife that I
- 2:37have my backpack this multi-tool blade
- 2:42pliers file maybe I'd be able to carve
- 2:45my way through the rock excavate my hand
- 2:48and I also think still right in the
- 2:51beginning from the get-go I even said
- 2:54out loud Aaron you're gonna have to cut
- 2:57your arm off to which I replied I don't
- 3:01want to cut my arm off right and then I
- 3:07retorted dude you're gonna have to cut
- 3:09your arm off
- 3:10I knew it isn't that the case we know
- 3:17the crisis happens the boulder falls on
- 3:20us we understand we intuitively know
- 3:23what it is that that we're gonna have to
- 3:25do to to manage this to change to adapt
- 3:28to it and yet we resisted I don't want
- 3:30to it's very familiar you go through
- 3:35enough of these and you see the pattern
- 3:37and yet I understood even in the
- 3:40beginning
