- 1:32you can see two letters inside the
- 1:35window it's m and a and we suppose we
- 1:39are not sure that it was the two
- 1:41initials of the person who decided to
- 1:44build the church um in
- 1:471883 it's very nice to wake up with the
- 1:50view of the three glass windows uh
- 1:53that's very romantic and nice to start
- 1:56the
- 1:57day could you describe what's happening
- 2:00in these three Windows no I don't know
- 2:04I'm not in the church
- 2:06thing not really sure
- 2:09sorry maybe a baptism but no I'm not
- 2:12sure
- 2:25okay uh it was actually my first mass
- 2:28here at the shrine as a young priest I
- 2:30was sent here in the US and two days
- 2:33later so I left on Monday and on
- 2:36Wednesday uh saw on the news that the
- 2:38shrine was on fire at about 5:45 this
- 2:41morning 150 Chicago firefighters
- 2:44responded to a three alarmed fire at The
- 2:46Shrine of Christ the King Church the
- 2:48quick moving fire burned through the
- 2:50roof and severely damaged the church's
- 2:53Sanctuary Church old church for more
- 2:56than 800 years tonight notredam
- 2:59Cathedral in Paris is completely
- 3:01engulfed by fire they quickly took hold
- 3:04the cathedral's Spire collapsed into the
- 3:06building it's feared very little has
- 3:08been saved
- 3:11[Music]
- 3:39maybe some people come in here expecting
- 3:41to go to mass and they stay for the beer
- 3:43there was a couple here who was married
- 3:45in this church when it was a church 50
- 3:47years ago and they came back on the day
- 3:50of their 50th Anniversary they said it
- 3:53was much better now than it was 50 years
- 3:55ago well you can drink beer in here for
- 3:58God's sake that's way better I got this
- 4:00church 10 years ago for free this is a
- 4:03beautiful building might as well put
- 4:05used to it the society that built these
- 4:06types of buildings doesn't exist anymore
- 4:15[Music]

- 4:51a person is in custody this evening
- 4:52accused of vandalizing St Patrick
- 4:55Cathedral and destroying a historic
- 4:57statue inside the church man approaches
- 4:59stat beaten with a hammer Alberta has
- 5:03been destroyed by fire burning Catholic
- 5:05and Anglican churches
- 5:07suspect it doesn't end
- 5:09there the vandals struck under cover of
- 5:13Darkness with graffiti and damage the
- 5:15statues beheaded
- 5:21[Music]
- 5:54it's very moving uh for me to be able to
- 5:56see that despite the damage that's gone
- 5:58on here at the church here this morning
- 6:01that uh this statue comes out and he's
- 6:03he's standing where everything else has
- 6:05fallen
- 6:12[Music]
- 6:33I wouldn't be wearing the Cog today and
- 6:35I wouldn't be a priest today if I had
- 6:38lost this this hope you know in in God
- 6:41cuz if you lose hope you lose faith
- 6:45[Music]
- 7:06Pope Francis is cracking down on what he
- 7:08says is a divide within the Catholic
- 7:10Church a bombshell of a law titled
- 7:13Guardians of the tradition which
- 7:15requires Bishops to approve celebrations
- 7:17of the old Latin Mass the Moto proprio
- 7:19claims to seek Unity by limiting the old
- 7:22right and focusing on the post Vatican 2
- 7:25novas zordo uh the real question is was
- 7:28the old right abrogated or
- 7:32[Music]
- 7:37forbidden regular Catholics in the pews
- 7:40may not have felt like the Latin Mass
- 7:42was replaced it was just translated into
- 7:47English but a large number of famous
- 7:51English actors and actresses writers
- 7:54poets painters musicians mainly
- 7:58non-catholics all signed a passionate
- 8:01petition to Paul v 6 begging him not to
- 8:05bury Forever This outstanding Treasure
- 8:08of Western
- 8:11culture so they succeeded this gave the
- 8:15Bishops of England and Wales permission
- 8:17to allow their priests to say the
- 8:21traditional Latin Mass publicly this is
- 8:23right after the novas sorto was
- 8:25promulgated we had a kind of crack in
- 8:27the dam okay well not everybody has to
- 8:29go along with
- 8:33this but unfortunately as far as I know
- 8:35in England you could only have the Latin
- 8:38Mass like once a month at some random
- 8:40Cathedral like you couldn't advertise it
- 8:42and it was just very restricted at the
- 8:44same time you have communities who are
- 8:46continuing a pace and they're ignoring
- 8:47the
- 8:48restrictions there was this Society of
- 8:50St Pi I 10th which was founded in 1970
- 8:54by Archbishop leev initially had the
- 8:57entire approval of the local Bishop it
- 8:59was entirely canonical no problems
- 9:01whatsoever they wanted to preserve the
- 9:03faith and preserve the traditional Latin
- 9:05mass and preserve the
- 9:07sacraments it's fairly well known that
- 9:09the abuses that occurred in the mass in
- 9:12the new mass in the 70s were uh
- 9:17Indescribable so Le was seeing this
- 9:19happen uh rotzinger saw it happen he was
- 9:22also scandalized by it and he even says
- 9:23as much he was a celebrity priest his
- 9:27books were bestsellers German young
- 9:29people loved him he was packing the
- 9:30lecture hall and in the 1970s he
- 9:34publicly criticizes Paul v 6 for this
- 9:37lurgical
- 9:40reform he says it in such a way that's
- 9:43respectful to the papal office and it
- 9:46seems to win over Paul the 6 and in the
- 9:491970s it it does seem to me that Paul
- 9:52the 6 was trying to re in certain things
- 9:56like he does sack bonini he does try to
- 9:58clamp on commun of the hand more and
- 10:02what he also does is he makes his big
- 10:04critic Joseph ratzer he makes him a
- 10:06bishop and then a cardinal in
- 10:111977 so Joseph rater is immediately
- 10:14elevated to the highest post below the
- 10:16pope by Paul I
- 10:196 and it's really under the pontificate
- 10:22of John Paul 2 that Joseph rasker starts
- 10:25to implement all of the ideas that he
- 10:27was talking about the 1970s
- 10:3014 years after the promulgation of the
- 10:33novas Ordo John Paul II comes out with a
- 10:35document he extends that indult
- 10:39worldwide so in ' 84 under John Paul II
- 10:43we have a worldwide indult
- 10:45[Music]
- 10:49permitted still not a lot of Bishops did
- 10:52kind of foster this there was a
- 10:53worldwide indult but it it didn't really
- 10:56uh it was the the the traditional Mass
- 10:58was very restricted it
- 11:01gradually gradually increased until
- 11:04there was a sort of network of priests
- 11:06they know each other lay associations
- 11:08who support them like the Latin mass
- 11:10societ in England UN in France and so on
- 11:14there are people with the expertise
- 11:15there are people understand Gregorian
- 11:16chant there are people who can teach
- 11:18priests how to celebrate the traditional
- 11:19Mass there are people who know where
- 11:21vestments are to be
- 11:23found so there's something to build
- 11:27on then by 88 4 years later lefv is
- 11:30dying of
- 11:32cancer they want to ordain Bishops they
- 11:36only have one Bishop leev he wants to
- 11:39ordain some priests Bishops and so he's
- 11:41begging the Vatican for permission and
- 11:43they keep telling him yes we'll let you
- 11:44and then they they keep moving the
- 11:46goalpost it's this date then the date
- 11:48was extended and extended there's
- 11:50politics involved and and it's
- 11:52complicated um but eventually he didn't
- 11:54want to wait anymore and so he ordained
- 11:57four priests Bishops he consecrated them
- 12:00[Music]
- 12:08Bishops monor Le asks The Bishop's
- 12:11designate whether they wish to consent
- 12:13and submit to the consecration
- 12:15[Music]
- 12:55our Founders were part of the SBX and
- 12:58thought it was a good to keep alive
- 13:00these traditions and when they found
- 13:03that their Superior Bishop Le had
- 13:06decided or change his mind really and
- 13:08would consecrate Bishops with that
- 13:10permission from Rome so they said well
- 13:14we love the traditional Mass we can't
- 13:16see ourselves serving God and souls
- 13:18outside of that tradition but on the
- 13:20other hand we believe that that
- 13:21tradition does entail um obedience to
- 13:25the successor of Peter
- 13:30John Paul II issued the mod proprio
- 13:33entitled eclesia Dei and in that
- 13:35document he excommunicates leev and the
- 13:37four recently consecrated Bishops but he
- 13:40also he makes Provisions for the
- 13:42establishment of societies and
- 13:44fraternities and institutes where
- 13:46priests who want to remain in full
- 13:48communion with Rome could enjoy that
- 13:50communion and still say the traditional
- 13:53Latin Mass so the Fraternal Society St
- 13:55Peter emerged from that as did The
- 13:58Institute of Christ the Sovereign priest
- 13:59and some other institutes and
- 14:03societies but it was still based on the
- 14:05local Bishop whether or not the local
- 14:07Bishop would allow it or
- 14:08not it was commonly held by most
- 14:13Catholic theologians that the old Mass
- 14:15was abrogated so you had to have these
- 14:17permissions right liturgists were saying
- 14:1970s ' 80s '90s Paul the six abrogated uh
- 14:22the old right but then finally when
- 14:25Benedict becomes Pope he had this View
- 14:27and he made it explicit in his document
- 14:29some more in pontificum he wrote this
- 14:32what prior Generations held sacred
- 14:35remains sacred we cannot all of a sudden
- 14:38uh forbid or consider as harmful what
- 14:42was always held to be sacred namely the
- 14:44ancient rights and so he in fact says
- 14:48the ancient right was never abrogated
- 14:52[Music]
- 14:59we do know that the most basic assertion
- 15:02of the sspx and all Latin Mass people in
- 15:04this time was that the Latin Mass has
- 15:07not been abated that basic assertion has
- 15:09been Vindicated by Samar and pontificum
- 15:12explicitly the next year Benedict lifts
- 15:15the excommunications from surviving
- 15:17bishops from the Society of St P the
- 15:1810th that was huge and talks proceeded a
- 15:21pace to try to have full reconciliation
- 15:23or full canonical regularity
- 15:27[Music]
- 15:37a couple years ago Andrea gillo who is
- 15:40an Italian
- 15:41liturgist he started a petition to
- 15:44overturn sorum pontificum under Pope
- 15:55[Music]
- 15:57Francis the thing to emphasize here is
- 16:00that with any papal act we have no idea
- 16:04how much Pope Francis was personally
- 16:06involved in really any of this the
- 16:08Vatican is a massive
- 16:10bureaucracy and we only have these
- 16:12different hints of what he might say in
- 16:14an interview what he was personally
- 16:16involved
- 16:18in the the talk of the the single
- 16:22expression of the Lex arandi of the
- 16:24Roman right it's very odd it doesn't
- 16:27sound like anything else the one place
- 16:30where that language can be found is in
- 16:32the works of Andrea
- 16:35Grio it's does suggest the document has
- 16:38been influenced by Progressive lurgical
- 16:42theorists having their own agenda do you
- 16:44know when Pope Francis was ordained a
- 16:47priest yes he was ordained in December
- 16:49of 1969 which was right when the Nova
- 16:51sorto was
- 16:52promulgated that that's this is like the
- 16:55Heyday of all the hopes and dreams of
- 16:57the Nova sordo so he never celebrated
- 17:00the old right you can see a huge
- 17:02difference in Jorge boro's generation
- 17:06that was formed in the priesthood in the
- 17:08seminary in the 60s and 70s and people
- 17:11like Carol vwa and Joseph ratzer who
- 17:13were ordained in the 40s and 50s and
- 17:16they celebrated the old right so I think
- 17:19that's very significant because it does
- 17:22seem that Pope Francis as a member of
- 17:24that generation is very much formed by
- 17:28the the Zeitgeist of that generation you
- 17:30know when we talk to people today who
- 17:32are of that generation they just simply
- 17:35cannot understand why people like us of
- 17:38the younger generation are so attached
- 17:40to Latin
- 17:43Mass a lot of the justification within
- 17:46the documents has not been in terms of
- 17:49the problem of the traditional mass and
- 17:51what's wrong with the traditional Mass
- 17:52it's rather the problem is the people
- 17:55who attended one of the main rationale
- 17:58that the the Holy Father uses to
- 18:00restrict the ancient right was that he
- 18:03consulted with Bishops and was made
- 18:06aware of a disturbing phenomenon where
- 18:09there's a lot of divisiveness among
- 18:11traditional Catholics in these
- 18:13communities widespread rejection of
- 18:15Vatican

- 22:58oh
- 23:01[Music]
- 23:29so many eggs look at all these eggs
- 23:31where's your basket well I got a
- 23:35[Music]
- 23:38chck a line that goes up and down is
- 23:40called what take your up and down is
- 23:42called what what is this line called if
- 23:45it goes up and down what is that line
- 23:47called what no it's a vertical line
- 23:52remember lines that go side to
- 23:55side are called horizontal hor Al now
- 24:00look at this one it's different this is
- 24:03a diagonal line you see how it goes to
- 24:05the side a little bit so we didn't know
- 24:08it was a Latin Mass we just needed to go
- 24:10to mass and the closest Parish I don't
- 24:12know what city we're in somewhere in
- 24:13Southern California
- 24:15and I was wearing shorts and flipflops
- 24:18and they were long khaki shorts but they
- 24:21were shorts you can get away with that
- 24:23in any Parish in Southern California
- 24:26probably except for this one because
- 24:28after after the mass it's beautiful Mass
- 24:30it was a beautiful Mass we tried to talk
- 24:33to people and people literally turned
- 24:36around and walked away I triy to talk to
- 24:38them it was bad it was so obvious of
- 24:41like we shun you we shun you from this
- 24:44experience I was embarrassed I looking
- 24:47back I can see why I mean I was not
- 24:50dressed very well so but I didn't know
- 24:53at the same time we're visitors and so
- 24:55that brought about this experience um of
- 24:58not being welcome at all and that was
- 25:00our first experience with the lp mass
- 25:02and so we walked away like well we know
- 25:04where we don't belong like not going
- 25:07back there let's go find another church
- 25:10that's more open and welcoming and
- 25:12doesn't shun you um and yeah that was
- 25:15our first
- 25:18experience all right put your bowl away
- 25:20and then get dressed watch yourself
- 25:22don't spill that two
- 25:24hands there you go throw it away
- 25:28that's all right I I'll get it all right
- 25:31go get dressed what's going to be you
- 25:34all
- 25:38done mom got you bat today yeah see
- 25:41looking good I am cold well cuz you
- 25:45don't have a shirt on son bra are
- 25:48spicy feisty no okay I'm sorry I don't
- 25:52know what you're
- 25:53saying I don't know where it came from
- 25:56but I had always assumed people who go
- 25:58to traditional Latin Mass are more upid
- 26:02they are going to be more
- 26:04judgmental and that first experience
- 26:07just reiterated that and I just thought
- 26:10well okay I guess maybe that is true and
- 26:13then our second experience has has blown
- 26:16every stereotype out of the water we
- 26:18were still clearly
- 26:20newcomers and it was
- 26:22obvious she on backwards buddy go sit on
- 26:25the
- 26:27steps first mass at the auditory was we
- 26:30were in the front row and we didn't know
- 26:31what we were doing we didn't know it was
- 26:32a Latin Mass so it was clearly and why
- 26:35do we sit in the front row like we like
- 26:37sit in theow I I know but for somebody
- 26:39who's never been like sit in the second
- 26:43row those assumptions of the community
- 26:46they just fall to the wayside it like
- 26:48Ricky said it's it's changed our lives I
- 26:51me we I can't even believe we're saying
- 26:52that like I know I can't even believe
- 26:55that I've been Catholic my whole life
- 26:58and I've been to mass as long as I can
- 27:01remember but yet it is this Mass it is
- 27:04the ancient Mass it's it's the
- 27:06traditional Latin mass that has changed
- 27:09our faith life I didn't this is Grace I
- 27:12didn't he brought me there I mean he
- 27:14brought me to a place where that I could
- 27:16be at a mass and I
- 27:18could I could be worshiping him and
- 27:21praying him and I could walk down that
- 27:24aisle of the oratory and I can go to the
- 27:26community and I can
- 27:29and I get to kneel down and receive my
- 27:31Lord there's nothing else I want to do
- 27:33besides
- 27:35[Music]
- 27:41that with regard to Pope Francis I think
- 27:44that he really hasn't had that
- 27:46experience of of meeting young people
- 27:47who are genuinely drawn to this and yet
- 27:50who love him and love the church I don't
- 27:53know if he
- 27:55really has seen the fruit of kind of a
- 27:59rediscovery of more traditional Mass

- 37:36luminum Vatican 2 said Bishops should
- 37:39not be regarded as Vicor of the Roman
- 37:42pontiff the Bishops Are Not Mere
- 37:45marionet of the Pope uh they have real
- 37:48and legitimate Authority within their
- 37:51their dases now he always must be
- 37:53obedient to what the pope teaches but he
- 37:56has a fair degree of latitude many
- 37:58Bishops some explicitly so appealed to
- 38:01Canan 87 uh which is there for a good
- 38:04reason in the 83 code of Canan law that
- 38:06is when there's a universal disciplinary
- 38:08Norm that is issued and that's what
- 38:10tradus custodes does IT issues Universal
- 38:13rules restricting the use of the
- 38:14traditional right but when a universal
- 38:17Norm May unintentionally cause harm in a
- 38:21particular Church uh then the local
- 38:23Bishop has the right and even the duty
- 38:25to invoke Canon 87 and say look that
- 38:28situation doesn't happen here so we're
- 38:30okay we can keep keep going that's
- 38:33that's baked into the code the promise
- 38:36that a bishop makes to to guard the
- 38:38deposit of Faith the deposit of faith is
- 38:43a Heritage of truth that there's so many
- 38:47different elements to it but it's about
- 38:50the salvation of souls it's
- 38:53about going to heaven it's not about
- 38:56managing this Earth
- 39:01[Music]
- 39:09[Music]
- 39:26so I would say to the Bishops you know
- 39:29get with the apostles as their
- 39:31successors and link your people up with
- 39:34that cloud of witnesses that church up
- 39:36there in glory is the same church as the
- 39:39Catholic church that we call Roman here
- 39:41for those who are in a state of grace
- 39:43and I think Bishops need to really
- 39:46stretch themselves to move from the
- 39:48natural to the supernatural the Bishops
- 39:50ought to
- 39:51be in Persona Christi in a way that
- 39:55corresponds to what Vatican 2 defined as
- 39:57the plenitude of holy orders they ought
- 40:00to fall hopelessly in love with the

- 43:13at that time when the change came we
- 43:16still had more missionary priests than
- 43:19local priests and so they were saying
- 43:22already the Liturgy it is already
- 43:24changed it is already so and Africa
- 43:27people they obey quickly so they obeyed
- 43:31without knowing a lot but then when we
- 43:34came to know the richness of the Liturgy
- 43:37so Wow we lost the precious things you

- 53:20if it had been such a problem if the
- 53:23traditional Mass was being was such a
- 53:25source of Vision the Bishops would have
- 53:28reacted said oh thank you we have this
- 53:30wonderful tool and finally we're being
- 53:32given permission to restrict the
- 53:33traditional L mass and to solve this
- 53:35great problem but that's not what you
- 53:38had at all in fact the response of the
- 53:40Bishops was far more representative of
- 53:43what was actually in the
- 53:45[Music]
- 53:46report the congregation for doctr of the
- 53:50faith sent round a short questionnaire
- 53:53to all the Bishops of the
- 53:55world there were not nine questions and
- 53:58they were about how it was working out
- 54:00the celebration of digital mass in your
- 54:02dasis is it good is it bad in this
- 54:05aspect that aspect so this office they
- 54:07would have been responsible for
- 54:09processing all of this data in all of
- 54:12these languages and then writing a
- 54:15report for the Holy Father to give him
- 54:17an idea of what the survey said you know
- 54:20seeking to be fair to all of the Bishops
- 54:23now the relationship between the report
- 54:27and said is is something which is
- 54:30obscure because frankly these things are
- 54:32never made public why should it be made
- 54:34public it's an internal document of the
- 54:35Holy sea that doesn't surprise me at all
- 54:38I was able to obtain the last section
- 54:41which was a collection of quotations
- 54:44from the Bishops around the world that
- 54:46would have been representative of what
- 54:49the Bishops had said as a whole some
- 54:52people who support the extraordinary for
- 54:54do so with ideological
- 54:57presuppositions this is true of some
- 54:59members of any group however they are
- 55:02not representative of the entirety of
- 55:05the communities of faithful who
- 55:07participate in the extraordinary
- 55:09form the question of ordinary or
- 55:12extraordinary form is irrelevant to our
- 55:15people there is little interaction
- 55:18between the group of faithful and the
- 55:21neighboring parish and the
- 55:24dicese the mode appropriate prum
- 55:27pontificum has allowed a real
- 55:29pacification of the lurgical
- 55:32issue it has not been my experience that
- 55:34the extraordinary form creates division
- 55:37but rather the
- 55:39opposite as Pope Benedict said we cannot
- 55:42abandon the right of the mass that has
- 55:45been used for centuries and say that is
- 55:48no longer
- 55:49relevant the possibility of celebrating
- 55:52the extraordinary form should be
- 55:54maintained it corresponds to to a real
- 55:56demand from rather young people I
- 55:59certainly believe that sorum pontificum
- 56:01cannot simply be revoked this would
- 56:04create many more problems than those we
- 56:06want to
- 56:09[Music]
- 56:16solve by all accounts the M vast
- 56:19majority of responses were very positive
- 56:21Bishops are seeing churches burgeoning
- 56:24overflowing with young families with
- 56:26many kids who are joyfully faithful to
- 56:29the
- 56:31magisterium many Bishops are very
- 56:33positive I've heard that from everyone
- 56:34who's seen the report I've talked to
- 56:37people in the Holy sea who've seen the
- 56:38report the bad things cited in TR said
- 56:42is they're there but they are in the
- 56:46minority the Bishops were sending the
- 56:48message to stay the course with sorum
- 56:51pontificum yes there could have been a
- 56:53slight alteration here or there but it
- 56:55was over overwhelmingly positive one
- 56:58year later approximately
- 57:0175% of Bishops who have the Latin Mass
- 57:05have not implemented tradition codus the
- 57:08vast majority of them did nothing or
- 57:10dispensed with it
- 57:16[Music]
- 57:33the local Bishops are seeing what
- 57:34they're seeing whether they're
- 57:35traditionally minded or not I think most
- 57:36are not but they're just seeing wow
- 57:38these are really good Catholics they're
- 57:40living out what we're preaching with
- 57:42respect to the family family life and
- 57:44Eucharistic devotion and in fact
- 57:47outreaches to the poor actions speak
- 57:49louder than words where is this urgency
- 57:52that Pope Francis where is he getting
- 57:54this story is he being Miss
- 57:58informed would it be fair if already in
- 58:01January 2020 there was a meeting in the
- 58:04congregation for the doctrine of the
- 58:06faith discussing things that they want
- 58:08to implement to restrict the traditional
- 58:11Latin Mass even before the survey goes
- 58:15out but what's interesting is the CDF
- 58:18superiors ordered a second report the
- 58:22second parallel report was commissioned
- 58:25in November of
- 58:262020 he finished his report by Christmas
- 58:30of 2020 but the results still kept
- 58:33coming in until
- 58:36[Music]
- 58:382021 so how credible can a report be if
- 58:43you're not basing it on all of the
- 58:47results we know that it exists but we
- 58:50don't know did the Holy Father actually
- 58:52see it was it intended to arrive at
- 58:54preconceived conclusion
- 58:57we don't really know that what we do
- 58:59know is that it was supposed to be a
- 59:00sort of second opinion you know I wish
- 59:02these people who were repeating this
- 59:04stuff would just go and visit some of
- 59:05these congregations yeah we got the odd
- 59:07you know the odd person who's who's
- 59:09who's deeply
- 59:10unhappy but let me show you a few of
- 59:12those in the Noah AO everyone's free to
- 59:15go and you have problematic people and
- 59:18you have good people and you have people
- 59:19who are on a journey and that's true of
- 59:22every single mass in the church and if
- 59:24it wasn't there'd be a problem
- 59:27you know we we now have a division that
- 59:29is going to have to be repaired that was
- 59:31based let's be frank about this on a
- 59:34false polling of the Bishops of the
- 59:36world the Bishops of the world were not
- 59:37demanding a restriction of the Latin
- 59:39Mass most of them didn't respond to the
- 59:41poll very few seem to be
- 59:43[Music]
- 59:54upset this this is EWTN news
- 59:59nightly with sorrow we inform you that
- 1:00:02the pope Meritus Benedict the 16th has
- 1:00:05died at the age of
- 1:00:0795 bells of St Peter's Basilica rang
- 1:00:10somberly to Mar already counted more
- 1:00:1240,000 pilgrims 65,000 hundreds of
- 1:00:15thousands of mourners filed past
- 1:00:17Benedict's body the crowd and turnout
- 1:00:19took the Vatican by surprise these are
- 1:00:22the people who were speaking they're
- 1:00:23Benedict's people and they're here in
- 1:00:26it was all young clergy they are reading
- 1:00:29rotzinger they are imbibing that and
- 1:00:31he's shaping their interior life and
- 1:00:33their lurgical Vision he was one of the
- 1:00:35greatest Minds in the history of the
- 1:00:37church he recognized problems that the
- 1:00:39church encountered as a result of the
- 1:00:42false interpretations of the second

- 1:01:26so
- 1:01:27good and so
- 1:01:30brilliant I was among his doctoral
- 1:01:32students okay I was there for two years
- 1:01:35I never heard a homy I never went to a
- 1:01:37class I didn't learn something new I
- 1:01:39mean every single time he spoke it was
- 1:01:42something new and was something you know
- 1:01:45profound and there's
- 1:01:47nobody nobody who worked with him who
- 1:01:50doesn't think he's a saint and that
- 1:01:53includes people who are his enemies
- 1:02:02[Music]
- 1:02:18Christ's promise at the gates of hell
- 1:02:20would not Prevail against the church and
- 1:02:22so we speak about things like the indect
- 1:02:24ability of the church like when we
- 1:02:26follow what the church teaches it will
- 1:02:28not lead us away from Jesus Christ it
- 1:02:31will not lead us into error it will not
- 1:02:32lead us into sin but that does not mean
- 1:02:36that every single thing the church does
- 1:02:38is always going to be Optimum uh there
- 1:02:41are Prudential decisions that are made
- 1:02:43such as what kind of liturgy is put
- 1:02:46forward in a missile for example we got
- 1:02:48to take the 62
- 1:02:50missile go back to the council see what
- 1:02:54happened and reform that reform you can
- 1:02:59say that those official po reforms were
- 1:03:01a
- 1:03:02mistake you know the church have made a
- 1:03:04lot of mistakes in our history you know
- 1:03:06we're trying to correct the mistake B do
- 1:03:08said nothing about pit change in the
- 1:03:10direction of PR nothing at all the
- 1:03:12problem is the official promats of
- 1:03:15Vatican 2 did say that mass should be
- 1:03:18celebrated facing the people but but
- 1:03:19it's still it's not a it doesn't have
- 1:03:21the same weight as a council document
- 1:03:23you see but wouldn't it be a faith ful
- 1:03:26Catholic who'd say I embrace Interra
- 1:03:28comich Paul I 6 celebrated Mass facing
- 1:03:31the people so to be a faithful Catholic
- 1:03:34we should celebrate facing the people no
- 1:03:35that's
- 1:03:37patry uh that's
- 1:03:39not I've lived through how many five or
- 1:03:41six popes in my lifetime okay I can't
- 1:03:44readjust my life every time a new pope
- 1:03:46comes in on the scene I have to
- 1:03:47interpret everything which any Pope does
- 1:03:49according to the whole long 2,000 years
- 1:03:52history of the church I can't just
- 1:03:53decide oh you know Pope Francis says
- 1:03:56turn off your air conditioner so I got
- 1:03:58to do that well no one of the big
- 1:04:00problems is we had two great holy popes
- 1:04:03in a row you know John Paul 2 and
- 1:04:06Benedict and who who's deeply Catholic
- 1:04:09and faithful would not want to say he
- 1:04:12knows better than I do uh he's got the
- 1:04:15holy spirit with him I want to do what
- 1:04:17he wants to do you
- 1:04:18know that makes a lot of sense but the
- 1:04:21problem is they kind of confused
- 1:04:23personal it kind of conflict relateded
- 1:04:26personal piety and Brilliance with the
- 1:04:29office of Peter as Vatican 1 says the
- 1:04:32Holy Father is the visible head of the
- 1:04:34church and he has supreme juridical
- 1:04:37authority and matters of liturgy are a
- 1:04:39matter of jurisdiction governance okay
- 1:04:42he has Supreme judical Authority in the
- 1:04:43church it doesn't say he has absolute
- 1:04:46Authority absolute Authority would mean
- 1:04:48I can do absolutely whatever I want to
- 1:04:50do is kind absolute
- 1:04:54monar is
- 1:05:16the broad consensus is that he can't get
- 1:05:19rid of the Essential Elements of matter
- 1:05:22and form in the mass he can't you know
- 1:05:26say that uh we're going to consecrate
- 1:05:28rice cakes instead of wheat the first of
- 1:05:31all why can he not change those
- 1:05:33Essential Elements because they come
- 1:05:34from the apostles who were led by Christ
- 1:05:36and the Holy Spirit public Revelation
- 1:05:38ends at the death of the last Apostles
- 1:05:40so things the apostles set down are
- 1:05:42really more or less Untouchable you
- 1:05:45don't mess with that so St Thomas
- 1:05:47aquinus has some very famous passages in
- 1:05:50the Suma when he's talking about the
- 1:05:51Eucharist where he asks where is it in
- 1:05:55Scripture
- 1:05:56that Jesus in the Roman right lifted his
- 1:05:58eyes up to
- 1:05:59heaven where is that in in scripture
- 1:06:02it's not there he said but there are
- 1:06:03many things that the Lord instructed the
- 1:06:05apostles that are not written down in
- 1:06:07scripture and nevertheless form part of
- 1:06:08sacred tradition and we are not free to
- 1:06:11get rid of them we have to preserve them
- 1:06:14in other words popes don't have absolute
- 1:06:15Authority they have supreme authority
- 1:06:17and that supreme authority is
- 1:06:18subordinated to the word of God
- 1:06:19Scripture and tradition including
- 1:06:21lurgical tradition do you think the pope
- 1:06:24Can Say the Latin mass is is completely
- 1:06:27forbidden um well I don't know I think
- 1:06:30he can do that I mean I think you know
- 1:06:32as a supreme pontiff I think he has the
- 1:06:34power to do that all over the world
- 1:06:37would cause
- 1:06:39unnecessary harm Vatican 1 it says some
- 1:06:43clearish things about papal Authority
- 1:06:46but I don't know what it means to be
- 1:06:50Supreme and yet not unlimited until you
- 1:06:53give me hypos to to test cas to say oh
- 1:06:56can the pope say four persons in the
- 1:06:58Trinity can the pope say that every
- 1:07:00practicing Catholic must attend at least
- 1:07:02two NBA games per season folks need to
- 1:07:05get hip to the idea that papal Authority
- 1:07:09has not been laid out yet I wish that
- 1:07:13those who say that there's a clear
- 1:07:15bright line that keeps that restricts
- 1:07:17the pope from altering discipline as
- 1:07:20much as giving us a new mass or making
- 1:07:23the new Mass the only Roman right I wish
- 1:07:25wish they're right then and now I say I
- 1:07:28hope I'm wrong on this but I'm 75% sure
- 1:07:32there's no clear bright line that
- 1:07:34delimits the Pope's disciplinary
- 1:07:36power Vatican published new guidelines
- 1:07:38today on the celebration of the
- 1:07:40traditional Latin Mass so-called
- 1:07:43rescript this is a written note from a
- 1:07:45meeting Pope Francis had yesterday with
- 1:07:47Cardinal Arthur roach it appears the
- 1:07:50Vatican is effectively doing away with
- 1:07:53the discretion of the local Bishops in
- 1:07:56all aspects of the old Latin right well
- 1:07:59in canon law when Rome or the pope
- 1:08:01issues a decree or Apostolic
- 1:08:04Constitution the local Bishop has the
- 1:08:06power according to Canon 87 to dispense
- 1:08:10from Provisions according to the
- 1:08:12Pastoral need in his dasis now that's
- 1:08:14all been changed so this rescript is
- 1:08:16really new law and it goes in the
- 1:08:19direction of depriving Bishops of the
- 1:08:21rights they enjoy in canon law to make
- 1:08:24pastoral decisions based on what they
- 1:08:25see now it's fascinating because
- 1:08:28traditional codas was issued on the
- 1:08:30basis of a survey in which we were told
- 1:08:32that there's a lot of
- 1:08:34dissatisfaction among the world's
- 1:08:36Bishops about the traditional Latin Mass
- 1:08:38but the fact that Bishops were allowing
- 1:08:40it to continue in their dases indicates
- 1:08:42the opposite so I think this is a Roman
- 1:08:44effort sad to say to further marginalize
- 1:08:47restrict and banish Latin Mass people
- 1:08:51and these are precisely a group of
- 1:08:52practicing Catholics who are very
- 1:08:54obedient so I I find this to be very
- 1:08:56distressing

- 1:11:00the Holy Father signed a decree giving
- 1:11:03us the permission to use all the
- 1:11:06lurgical books in force in 1962 and he
- 1:11:09said the provision of traditionist
- 1:11:11custodes do not apply to
- 1:11:13you because you have these constitutions
- 1:11:16you have this right and he as his decree
- 1:11:20confirmed this and we saw it as a
- 1:11:23providential you know encouragement also
- 1:11:25the fact that uh it was signed in fact
- 1:11:28unbeknown to the Holy Father on the very
- 1:11:30last day of a noen to Our Lady asking
- 1:11:33for her protection for our fraternity um
- 1:11:36the hly father did not know there was a
- 1:11:37noen and it just happened to be a
- 1:11:39coincidence of dates but there are no
- 1:11:41such coincidences and so we we really
- 1:11:43believe in the fraternity that we we owe
- 1:11:46that particular expression of you know
- 1:11:49providential protection uh to to our
- 1:11:52blessed lady to the a crisis like what
- 1:11:57happened with the sspx and you're in
- 1:11:59another crisis with tradition as codus
- 1:12:01but in both cases you you knock on the
- 1:12:03Pope's
- 1:12:04door it is true it's um well it's a bit
- 1:12:09like what St Peter you know to whom
- 1:12:11should we go a lord you you have the
- 1:12:13words of eternal life and uh okay the
- 1:12:16pope is not uh Christ but is his Vicor
- 1:12:19and even if we don't understand
- 1:12:21everything we can't see that we could go
- 1:12:23anywhere else
- 1:12:26in due time there will be another Pope
- 1:12:29and there will be another Pope after
- 1:12:30that and who knows how long we have
- 1:12:32until Jesus comes back but in the
- 1:12:34meantime just as easily as the current
- 1:12:37Holy Father did a did a complete
- 1:12:40reversal or abreg of what the previous
- 1:12:43Holy Father said the next Holy Father
- 1:12:45could do the exact same thing with this
- 1:12:47that's what I mean when I say I'm in it
- 1:12:48for the long haul I'm trying to take the
- 1:12:50Long View because like the apostles
- 1:12:53panicked in in the the boat on the Sea
- 1:12:56of Galilee when the storm came and Jesus
- 1:12:58was
- 1:13:00asleep I mean I don't know how you could
- 1:13:01sleep through a storm like that but
- 1:13:03Jesus was asleep and so they woke him up
- 1:13:05Lord don't you care about what's going
- 1:13:07on here and he says after he calms the
- 1:13:10storm and everything gets back to normal
- 1:13:11why did you doubt oh you of little faith
- 1:13:14it wouldn't be the first time that
- 1:13:15things happened within the church which
- 1:13:18uh when you looked back at in history uh
- 1:13:21appeared to be unjust but um God allows
- 1:13:26that to um make us you know improve in
- 1:13:30various virtues including hope it's a
- 1:13:32very practical virtue I was told it's uh
- 1:13:36believing that God will uh take us with
- 1:13:41him in heaven through providing the
- 1:13:44means which are adequate to our personal
- 1:13:49needs so he basically knows who we are
- 1:13:53what we need what is the problem and
- 1:13:55will tailor his assistance to uh our
- 1:13:59circumstances so it's not a vague
- 1:14:01expectation it's actually God is going
- 1:14:03to roll up his sleeves and come down
- 1:14:06where where I suffer and he will help me
- 1:14:08that's the value of Hope if we see
- 1:14:11reality Through The Eyes of faith and we
- 1:14:14pray Our Father who are in heaven if
- 1:14:16he's in heaven then we're not home yet
- 1:14:19no matter where we head after Mass is
- 1:14:21done we're in Exile that here we have no
- 1:14:23lasting City so if that's the reality
- 1:14:26then enduring a life of hardship
- 1:14:28enduring a life of humiliation enduring
- 1:14:31a long protracted viad delosa then the
- 1:14:34endurance of Hope is the only rational
- 1:14:37response to the mysteries of Faith
- 1:14:40whatever sufferings you can endure that
- 1:14:42won't separate you from Christ nakedness
- 1:14:45Peril famine the sword no on the
- 1:14:47contrary they don't separate us from
- 1:14:49Christ they conform us to Christ more
- 1:14:52than my rosary which I don't ever do a
- 1:14:54day without you know or daily mass or
- 1:14:57Sunday mass or anything else and what is
- 1:14:59this called being
- 1:15:02Catholic truly and fully and
- 1:15:05consistently I think there's an
- 1:15:07obligation now especially for parents to
- 1:15:09find the mass which is most consistent
- 1:15:14with the church's living tradition uh
- 1:15:17and that you don't have to explain to
- 1:15:19your kids well that's not really right
- 1:15:20what he did there or that hly you know
- 1:15:23we we you don't want the parents have
- 1:15:25correct the priest that's not a way for
- 1:15:27kids to learn I want certainty that I
- 1:15:30can give my children a stable lurgical
- 1:15:32formation through all of their
- 1:15:34sacraments of initiation into matrimony
- 1:15:37because that would be the final sort of
- 1:15:39initiation into adulthood would be this
- 1:15:41final Sacrament and I want them to have
- 1:15:44liturgical stability I want them to have
- 1:15:47absolutely Rock certainty Solid

- 1:15:57[Music]
- 1:16:20inen for me it's like
- 1:16:23Peter resp responding to Jesus in John 6
- 1:16:28when Jesus says are you going to go
- 1:16:31to and
- 1:16:36Nomes where else would we go what else
- 1:16:39would we do you have the words of
- 1:16:41eternal life we're with you to the
- 1:16:49end our mother the church is suffering
- 1:16:54we are temp Ed to be
- 1:16:56angry we are tempted to and want to say
- 1:17:00descend from the cross no this is not
- 1:17:04the
- 1:17:05means but Christ the lord alone will
- 1:17:08determine the
- 1:17:10time when he will lead his bride our
- 1:17:13mother the church again to luminous days
- 1:17:18through the sufferings and
- 1:17:21atonements and through the unshakeable
- 1:17:25Fidelity of the little ones in the
- 1:17:28church this is the method of
- 1:17:35God how can God look down on all the
- 1:17:37suffering of this world and not do
- 1:17:39something for it how can he be passive
- 1:17:42in the face of all of this evil shall
- 1:17:44almighty God look down on the most
- 1:17:46perfect one who ever lived and not
- 1:17:49snatch from out those hands and Na and
- 1:17:52not snatch from their head to CR of
- 1:17:55arms shall he allow this virtue and
- 1:17:58innocence and goodness to go down to
- 1:18:01death where is the goodness of God where
- 1:18:03is his understanding those are the
- 1:18:06questions that we might well indeed ask
- 1:18:09if there had not been a resurrection but
- 1:18:12given a
- 1:18:14resurrection no longer can men say God
- 1:18:17does not know what it is to
- 1:18:20suffer and when there are days of
- 1:18:22catastrophe or days of es such as we
- 1:18:26have today we need a religion that was
- 1:18:30born in
- 1:18:32defeat we need a religion that had its
- 1:18:36origin in
- 1:18:38catastrophe and therefore we will now
- 1:18:40never be without hope where a good triy
- 1:18:43will be the faue to an Easter Sunday so
- 1:18:46long as we bear innocently that Divine
- 1:18:49image in the face of the evil of the
- 1:18:51world we shall never perish why we have
- 1:18:54already one
