17. 0:57dominant force in the market by far are
18. 1:00right not close you or it right we do
19. 1:04have some monopolies up here in the
20. 1:07Pacific Northwest one of them is
21. 1:09Microsoft you say Microsoft is a
22. 1:11monopoly yeah they are no they're not I
23. 1:14have an apple yeah apples iPads iPhones
24. 1:21contain Microsoft
25. 1:22products why have
26. 1:24Linux Linux contains Microsoft products
27. 1:28too the boot yeah it's they're in

31. 1:39well I don't think I don't agree well
32. 1:40the federal government disagrees with

35. 1:51they make jumbo Jets right big big big
36. 1:53jets right and they're here in the
37. 1:55Pacific Northwest and we all see them
38. 1:56the factories all over the place here

48. 2:25people say are monopolies good or bad
49. 2:28and the answer is is money good or
50. 2:31bad monopolies are kind of the same as
51. 2:35money they're good and they're bad same
52. 2:38thing right so Microsoft so when
53. 2:42Microsoft first came around first
54. 2:44started up they uh thought that the idea
55. 2:48of the internet was dumb they didn't
56. 2:50think the they said internet is not
57. 2:52going to be the B deal everybody wants
58. 2:55CD
59. 2:57players that's the wave of the futures
60. 2:59CD guys guys know what a CD is
61. 3:04right right right right not talking
62. 3:06certificate or deposit talking about you
63. 3:08know
64. 3:11little you've never seen one of these

68. 3:21Explorer they came up was called
69. 3:24Netscape okay so Netscape came up with
70. 3:27it and there's they had a better product
71. 3:29than Microsoft because Microsoft says
72. 3:30people don't want want internet then
73. 3:32they realize that internet's a thing so
74. 3:35they said okay we're going to put
75. 3:37internet on Microsoft and it's called
76. 3:39Internet Explorer so when you first turn
77. 3:42on Microsoft on a
78. 3:45computer you would get a little e right
79. 3:48little e like that right and the E would
80. 3:51pop
81. 3:52up and stood for the Microsoft says it
82. 3:55stands for Internet Explorer and if you
83. 3:58don't want to use internet Explorer or
84. 4:00you don't like this this uh
85. 4:03icon delete it right and how long does
86. 4:06it take to delete an
87. 4:09icon 10 seconds if you're slow right so
88. 4:15the federal government said oh no
89. 4:17Microsoft that e does not stands for
90. 4:20Internet Explorer it stands for evil

102. 4:55dou yeah but that's okay right Microsoft
103. 5:00is evil because they put the E for
104. 5:03Internet Explorer and Boeing steals

107. 5:11interesting and then the last one is the

157. 7:22Honda generators whole Bank of Honda
158. 7:25generators and I'm going to start up and
159. 7:27I'm going to make electricity and sell

163. 7:35take gasoline and convert it into
164. 7:41electricity is that a good
165. 7:44idea well you have to some places you
166. 7:46don't have a choice but is it the best
167. 7:49way to do it no no no no no would you
168. 7:52want to be my neighbor all that smoke
169. 7:54coming up you be breathing all that
170. 7:56stuff and the racket oh it's terrible

172. 8:01Dam takes rain converts into electricity
173. 8:04which gives us cheap electricity here we

176. 8:12electricity and uses it to pump water

178. 8:19over the desert in Eastern Washington
179. 8:23and you know what the water does in the
180. 8:24desert it turns the desert into non-
181. 8:27deserts which means we grow apples and
182. 8:30fruits and all sorts of food because of
183. 8:33that
184. 8:35Dam wow no it gets even better we love
185. 8:38the grand cooli dam because the grand
186. 8:40Dam produces too much electricity
187. 8:44sometimes
188. 8:45yeah and when it produces too much
189. 8:48electricity when we just have too much
190. 8:49electricity don't know what to do with
191. 8:51it we sell it to our friends in
192. 8:54Canada and they buy our electricity
193. 8:56which makes us rich it get get even more
194. 9:00interesting once in a while the grand
195. 9:02coola dam does not produce enough
196. 9:07electricity so we end up buying
197. 9:11electricity back from
198. 9:14Canada but here's where it gets even
199. 9:16more fun we pay less for it than they
200. 9:19pay from
201. 9:20us so we sell more Dam electricity than
202. 9:24they sell to us and we make money on it
203. 9:27in the process

206. 9:37also Boeing is here in the Pacific
207. 9:40Northwest because of the grand
208. 9:42Dam what does grand Dam have to
209. 9:45do with Boeing Boeing makes jumbo Jets
210. 9:49and until recently all jumbo Jets were
211. 9:50made out of aluminum or aluminium how
212. 9:53they pronounce it in Europe I don't know
213. 9:55but aluminum and the way to get aluminum
214. 9:58or is you need lots of electricity so we
215. 10:02have cheap electricity so we have cheap
216. 10:04aluminum ore and so they produced
217. 10:07airplanes here because you don't have to
218. 10:08transport
219. 10:09the wow everybody loves Grand D

223. 10:21Canada make
224. 10:23aluminum yeah yeah and Boeing is here

226. 10:28exporter in the United
227. 10:31States so we sell more airplanes Bo
228. 10:35makes more money bringing selling
229. 10:37airplanes around the world than any
230. 10:40other large
231. 10:43company so we make airplanes here and we
232. 10:47sell them to China and they give us
233. 10:48toasters back they give us a lot of
234. 10:51toasters and it makes everything cheap
235. 10:54because if when you buy in large
236. 10:55quantities you get discounts don't you
237. 10:58wow
238. 10:59so it's even so the largest product the
239. 11:04most products that bring money into the
240. 11:07United States is food food is the number
241. 11:09one export of the United States but
242. 11:12farmers are lots of farmers Boeing is
243. 11:16Boeing and Boeing is the largest export
244. 11:19do we love Boeing yes we love Boeing
245. 11:22even though they sto McDonald Douglas
246. 11:25yes say how do they steal McDonald

263. 12:21bald cat but it's a Calico a really ugly
264. 12:25ugly Calico Microsoft is not evil
265. 12:30so to understand antitrust you have to
266. 12:32understand the Sherman Antitrust Act now
267. 12:34some of textbooks mentioned Clayton
268. 12:36Antitrust Clayton is not the the main
269. 12:38law the main law that started all up is

271. 12:42anti-st I misspelled
272. 12:45anti-rust which should be a n t t u s
273. 12:51act okay so whenever anybody talks about
274. 12:53antitrust they talk about the Sherman
275. 12:55Antitrust Act now if your brain is
276. 12:58really really
277. 12:59big and you want to make a lot of money
278. 13:03go into Anti-Trust law right it's very
279. 13:06complex it's very hard to understand but
280. 13:09you can make a lot of money but the idea
281. 13:12of antitrust is actually really easy to
282. 13:15understand Anti-Trust means unfair
283. 13:20trade they should have called it the
284. 13:22Sherman unfair trade act but they didn't
285. 13:26they want to sound sexy I guess and
286. 13:28think Anti-Trust
287. 13:30it's a should be the Sherman unfair
288. 13:32trade
289. 13:34act so every time you see antitrust
290. 13:37unfair trade Sherman Antitrust Act was
291. 13:41designed for the Cho
292. 13:43Chu the
293. 13:45railroad yeah so back in the
294. 13:481800s the railroad Barons people who own
295. 13:51all the railroad got together and they
296. 13:54said let's all raise our
297. 13:56prices you raise your prices I'll raise
298. 13:59my prices that's called price
299. 14:01fixing so if you were a farmer
300. 14:05in Colorado or
301. 14:08Nebraska and you wanted to ship your
302. 14:10your cow from Nebraska to New York City
303. 14:14back in the
304. 14:161800s how many choices did you
305. 14:20have they didn't have Jets they didn't
306. 14:22have trucks it could have walked them
307. 14:25but then you'd walk off all the all the
308. 14:27fat and the food off off of them they be
309. 14:29sticks by the time they get there so you
310. 14:30had to use the Choo

313. 14:38pretty soon the
314. 14:40cow cost more to
315. 14:43ship than the cow is

325. 15:09poor people in New York City ate because
326. 15:11they couldn't afford a beef they ate
327. 15:13chicken yeah yeah but they really
328. 15:15couldn't afford to be they ate mostly
329. 15:17poor people ate
330. 15:19Lobster yeah because Lobster was easy he
331. 15:21could just go out out in the bay and
332. 15:23catch some Lobster and it was that's
333. 15:24what the poor people ate because it's
334. 15:26but but they didn't want Lobster they
335. 15:27wanted beef and they wanted a hamburger
336. 15:30really badly because you always want
337. 15:32what you can't have don't you he said I

341. 15:41eating beef and hamburgers poor people
342. 15:43are eating lobster it's kind of swapped

345. 15:52and they created the Sherman Antitrust
346. 15:54Act
347. 15:59okay Dr Evil would not agree with this
348. 16:01he'd say I don't think so right hey have
349. 16:05you ever noticed a second back over here
350. 16:10have you ever noticed that the
351. 16:14railroads are on the board game of
352. 16:20Monopoly they are aren't
353. 16:25they and have you noticed that the more
354. 16:27railroads you are
355. 16:29own the more you can
356. 16:32charge because you just have a little
357. 16:34price fixing with
358. 16:36yourself
359. 16:39wow pretty fun
360. 16:44stuff so Sherman Antitrust has three
361. 16:47three parts to it number one it
362. 16:50regulates
363. 16:52monopolies it keeps monopolies from
364. 16:54being a bully if you're not a bully
365. 16:57you're probably good if you're a bully
366. 17:00you're probably not good you're bad
367. 17:02right so if you're a monopoly you're
368. 17:03like the grand coolly dam they give us
369. 17:05cheap electricity and create jobs and
370. 17:07stimulate the economy and food and
371. 17:10everything like that hey that's good
372. 17:12right we love them but when Microsoft
373. 17:15puts the little e for evil on their
374. 17:18screen for Dr
375. 17:20Evil then they're bad and we need to
376. 17:24stop them from being a bully okay that's
377. 17:26number one number two is price fix
378. 17:30price fixing is where two or more
379. 17:33companies get together or people from
380. 17:35two or more companies get together to
381. 17:37artificially raise my price so let's say
382. 17:39I have a lawnmowing business and you
383. 17:41have a lawnmowing business and we're the
384. 17:42only two people with lawnmowing
385. 17:44businesses in North Bend right I say to
386. 17:47you hey you know what I'll raise my
387. 17:50prices if you raise your prices you say
388. 17:53that sounds like a good idea to me let's
389. 17:55both raise our prices right and we do
390. 17:57that's illegal
391. 17:59right but what if there are five other
392. 18:01lawnmowing businesses in Northbend and I
393. 18:05say to you hey I'll raise my price you
394. 18:07you raise your price who cares about the
395. 18:08other people and you say yes that's
396. 18:10still price fixing and that's
397. 18:13illegal and the last one is called it
398. 18:16prohibits collusion I love that word
399. 18:19collusion until just recently nobody
400. 18:23really knew what collusion meant but now
401. 18:25you hear it all the time so Donald Trump
402. 18:27says there was no collusion usion with
403. 18:29the Russians what he is saying is he
404. 18:32didn't collude collude means
405. 18:34conspire conspiracy right so he is
406. 18:37saying that he did not conspire or
407. 18:42collude with the Russians to rig the
408. 18:45election that's that's all he say right
409. 18:48so in the Sherman Antitrust Act
410. 18:51collusion is where two or more companies
411. 18:55conspire to harm another company
412. 19:00okay so let's say for instance uh I'm a
413. 19:04paint
414. 19:06supplier and you're a paint
415. 19:08supplier and we have this one customer
416. 19:11that we just don't like them they're
417. 19:14they're they're just difficult to work
418. 19:16with and I say you know what I'm going
419. 19:19to do every time they buy paint from me
420. 19:22I'm going to water it
421. 19:24down I'm put a lot of water in there
422. 19:28don't you do that too so if we get
423. 19:30everybody start putting water in then
424. 19:32this person will go out of business and
425. 19:34we won't have to deal with their
426. 19:35headaches all the time that is illegal
427. 19:39you cannot do that and if you get caught
428. 19:42price fixing or collusion it's hard to
429. 19:44catch you right but if you do get
430. 19:48caught you
431. 19:51can go to jail go directly to jail do
432. 19:55not pass go do not collect
433. 19:57$200 you spend more than $200 the fines
434. 20:00for violations of the Sherman Antitrust
435. 20:03Act are really big right it's not a
436. 20:05happy thing to to to get
437. 20:09caught collusion see they didn't
438. 20:13collude
439. 20:20right now if Putin says I don't like
440. 20:26Hillary that's legal he can do that and
441. 20:29he can do all the the sly little things
442. 20:31he wants to do to stop it but if he
443. 20:33joins joined forces with the
444. 20:37Donald then that is
445. 20:40illegal right so that's why he's always
446. 20:42saying we didn't cude we we didn't do
447. 20:44anything with the
448. 20:46Russians

454. 21:03price of gasoline everybody thinks

456. 21:07because how many times you go to the gas

459. 21:13don't need it today I'll get it tomorrow
460. 21:15so today it's $2 and tomorrow it's $
461. 21:17five you look all the gas stations went
462. 21:19from $2 to $5 and you say I took Andy
463. 21:22Johnson's business 101 class and that
464. 21:24has to be price fixed again I'm going to
465. 21:26tell probably wasn't
466. 21:29what happened
467. 21:30was Mr Chevron Mr Chevron decides he
468. 21:34wants to raise his prices why he just
469. 21:37decides he wants he can charge whatever
470. 21:39price he wants to charge right that's
471. 21:40not unfair trade so he decides to raise
472. 21:43his price and M BP across the street
473. 21:47notices that his prices have just gone
474. 21:49up 50 cents a gallon and people are
475. 21:51still buying his
476. 21:53gasoline and he she says well that's
477. 21:55weird right now why would Reas people
478. 21:59pay more for gasoline there's a lot of
479. 22:03reasons why they would do it you say I
480. 22:06wouldn't yeah you probably would right
481. 22:08no I I would I always get the cheapest
482. 22:10gas out there no you don't
483. 22:13okay you think you do okay
484. 22:17within 30 miles of Belleview College
485. 22:21what gas station
486. 22:23consistently has the least expensive gas

500. 23:10cheaper couple months ago they were like
501. 23:1280 cents cheaper per gallon for the
502. 23:17gasoline most people don't pay attention
503. 23:19to the price of
504. 23:20gasoline I don't pay attention the price
505. 23:22of gasoline because I don't drive a car
506. 23:25that uses gasoline I drive an EV
507. 23:28electric
508. 23:29vehicle so I drive by and I go there's
509. 23:32that price so I notice it but I don't
510. 23:34really care because I drive at EV and
511. 23:36you think what kind of EV do you
512. 23:39drive I drive a
513. 23:41Tesla yes not what you think I'll show
514. 23:46you pictures of my Tesla it's actually a
515. 23:47Toyota Tesla did you know that Toyota
516. 23:50and Tesla did a joint project and built
517. 23:53a Tesla car and it's a Tesla but they
518. 23:57took a RAV four and put it on top of the
519. 24:01Tesla that's what I drive RAV four I'll

575. 26:18have a friend will not put anything but
576. 26:21Texico gasoline in his vehicles that is
577. 26:24it and I said why is just got Techron in
578. 26:26it

580. 26:33going to raise my prices too because
581. 26:35we're we've got some stuff in it that
582. 26:37doesn't do anything either and so then
583. 26:40it's like all the gas stations just
584. 26:42slowly do it and then everybody's back
585. 26:44up to the price of Mr Chevron and Mr
586. 26:46Chevron says well I'm gonna raise it
587. 26:47again he does it and cycles and cycles
588. 26:50and Cycles have gone from $2 to $5
589. 26:52overnight nothing illegal has happened
590. 26:55there because they didn't

636. 28:48Explorer and it was a superior product
637. 28:51to Microsoft it was better than every
638. 28:53standard right but Microsoft wanted to
639. 28:56get into the game because there was a
640. 28:57lot of to be made on the internet so
641. 29:00Microsoft he knows how Microsoft always
642. 29:01does updates and
643. 29:04changes yeah and it gets kind of boring
644. 29:07doesn't it yeah so um Microsoft made an
645. 29:11update and all of a sudden if you
646. 29:13installed Netscape or tried to use
647. 29:15Netscape on a computer with the new
648. 29:17version of Microsoft you got What's
649. 29:19called the blue screen of death you know
650. 29:22where your computer blue screen that
651. 29:24freezes up and you got to shut it off
652. 29:26and turn it back on again so Netscape
653. 29:29stopped
654. 29:30working so Netscape says Hey Microsoft
655. 29:34you need to fix your software because
656. 29:36all of a sudden our stuff stopped
657. 29:37working the Microsoft
658. 29:38says oh yeah we'll get right on that
659. 29:42yeah we want to get your stuff working
660. 29:45on our computer sure we'll get on and
661. 29:46they did
662. 29:47nothing so then couple months go by
663. 29:50Netscape sees its market share start to
664. 29:52go down M Netscape goes to Microsoft
665. 29:55says hey how's it coming well we can't
666. 29:59figure out why it won't work it's just
667. 30:02something wrong with your program we we
668. 30:04don't know why well the Netscape says
669. 30:07well we'll help you fix your program and
670. 30:09M says oh thanks so much for the offer
671. 30:13but we we we'll fix it right and they
672. 30:17never did right so now Market Shar is
673. 30:19going down down down down down from for
674. 30:21Netscape and so now Netscape could has
675. 30:24two choices Netscape could either file a
676. 30:27loss suit under the Sherman Antitrust
677. 30:29Act against Microsoft Mighty
678. 30:33Microsoft tiny
679. 30:36Netscape what's the possibility Netscape
680. 30:38would ever win a law a complex big
681. 30:42monster lawsuit against Mighty
682. 30:46Microsoft it couldn't happen so Netscape

685. 30:55so the federal government says they're
686. 30:58doing what microsofts do what they're
687. 30:59being a bully here's what they're doing
688. 31:02ask them to fix it so mic the government
689. 31:05goes to Microsoft and says hey Microsoft
690. 31:07fix your problem oh we're working as
691. 31:10hard as we can it just doesn't seem to
692. 31:13be working well why don't you have
693. 31:14netgate come and help you no we don't
694. 31:16want to have have them uh working on on
695. 31:20we'll get it working okay get it working
696. 31:22soon no we're we're right on it right on
697. 31:24it nothing right finally US government
698. 31:28says hey you either fix it or let
699. 31:31Netscape fix it Microsoft
700. 31:35says no and you can't make
701. 31:39me what okay now net capap Microsoft can
702. 31:43say that to Netscape they can say that
703. 31:45to you they can say it to
704. 31:46me Can Microsoft really tell the federal
705. 31:50government no and you can't make me also
706. 31:54here's a question what happens when
707. 31:55somebody puts their face in your face
708. 31:58and they say no and you can't make me

733. 32:57thought it was going to then all of a
734. 32:59sudden a few states in the United States
735. 33:02filed lawsuits against Microsoft because
736. 33:05it was harming their consumers it was
737. 33:06unfair trade and then all a sudden more
738. 33:09and more and more and then all a said
739. 33:11other countries started filing all of a
740. 33:13sudden Microsoft bullied Netscape all of
741. 33:16a sudden they just got hit with lawsuits
742. 33:17all over the world they're like
743. 33:23going it was ugly Okay so
744. 33:30Microsoft just waited it out they just
745. 33:32delayed it they delayed it they delayed
746. 33:36you ever watched politicians sometimes
747. 33:38if they get in trouble they say yeah
748. 33:40we'll deal with this later later they
749. 33:43just keep extending it out that's what
750. 33:46Microsoft did and finally Netscape went
751. 33:49bankrupt and they're gone there's no
752. 33:51Netscape anymore and Microsoft says see
753. 33:54we won that
754. 33:56lawsuit no they didn't
755. 33:58they lost it and here's how they lost it
756. 34:01if you looked at the stock market price
757. 34:03of Microsoft Microsoft was climbing like
758. 34:06just like a rocket it was going straight
759. 34:09up then the lawsuit
760. 34:12happened and it flattened out and it's
761. 34:15been pretty darn flat every since then
762. 34:19because when you're shooting up you're
763. 34:20going up like you take chances you do
764. 34:22you're creative all of a sudden you get
765. 34:24attacked what do you do you defend
766. 34:26yourself you stop you're just trying to
767. 34:28defend trying to keep the status
768. 34:30quo so Microsoft lost millions and
769. 34:34millions and billions and billions of
770. 34:38dollars as a result of this L they
771. 34:42won yeah it's kind of like winning the
772. 34:44war so if your country fights another
773. 34:46country and you kill everybody but one
774. 34:48person you say I'm the last one standing
775. 34:51so I won and yet all your family's gone
776. 34:53and your whole village is gone
777. 34:55everything did you really win
778. 34:59well good for you if you think you
779. 35:02did now
780. 35:05Boeing so Microsoft was evil with the
781. 35:08Internet Explorer and boing stole
782. 35:11McDonald
783. 35:12dlas
784. 35:14yeah and they were allowed to do this
785. 35:16because the Sherman Antitrust Act has
786. 35:19one
787. 35:22exception one time you can be a bully
788. 35:26you can price fix and you can
789. 35:28collude one situation and that's if
790. 35:31you're doing international
791. 35:34business you see the French they don't
792. 35:37have this pesky little law the Japanese
793. 35:40don't have this pesky little law the
794. 35:42Koreans don't have this pesky little law
795. 35:45United States does so if
796. 35:50Airbus can get together with other
797. 35:52companies to price fix include Boeing
798. 35:56cannot and that gives Airbus an unfair
799. 35:59Advantage doesn't it so they made one
800. 36:01exclusion they say if you're doing
801. 36:03business mostly internationally by the
802. 36:05way at this time Boeing was getting 80%
803. 36:08of their revenues from outside the
804. 36:09United States 80% and they're our
805. 36:11largest exporting company they're making
806. 36:13a lot of money for the United States and
807. 36:16they're paying taxes we love boing and
808. 36:19they said we don't want to give an
809. 36:20advantage to Airbus so they said okay
810. 36:21there's an exception if you're doing
811. 36:23business
812. 36:25internationally you can you're exempt
813. 36:28from the Sherman Antitrust Act so Boeing
814. 36:30says Ah let's steal McDonald Douglas and
815. 36:33be a
816. 36:34buling I'll show you how they stole them
817. 36:36later don't worry we'll get you there
818. 36:38right and everybody's Happy Well
819. 36:41Microsoft says well we're International
820. 36:42too and at that time they're getting
821. 36:44less than 40% of the so half so the
822. 36:47courts rulle they said Microsoft you're
823. 36:49you're an international company and
824. 36:50you're making it but so there's no
825. 36:52competition you don't have any
826. 36:54internation what chinasoft yeah
827. 36:57there really was a company called
828. 36:58chinasoft I don't know if they're still
829. 37:00around or not I haven't heard of it for
830. 37:02a long long long time I bet you none of
831. 37:06you even heard of them even heard of
832. 37:09them yes Microsoft doesn't have any real
833. 37:13competition so they said Microsoft
834. 37:15you're still under this pesky little
835. 37:19law now there's another company called
836. 37:22Cisco Cisco is a monopoly right Cisco
837. 37:25service so there's two cisos that you
838. 37:27know one is Cisco foods and they deliver
839. 37:29food to like the cafeteria if you go to
840. 37:30BBY College U you'll see the cafeteria
841. 37:33truck bringing in food that's Cisco it's
842. 37:35spelled a little differently but it's
843. 37:36the same it's pronounced the same way
844. 37:37but I'm talking about Cisco servers
845. 37:39Cisco routers anytime you send an
846. 37:42email anywhere in the world it goes to a
847. 37:45Cisco router that's Monopoly right
848. 37:50so the government came up to Cisco and
849. 37:52says Cisco we think your your profits if
850. 37:54your profit margins are a little high
851. 37:56can you lower your price
852. 37:58Cisco says if you think we're getting
853. 38:01too much we're using our position to
854. 38:03make too much money unfairly yes we will
855. 38:05low our
856. 38:06prices
857. 38:08Cisco some other companies have
858. 38:10complained that your stuff doesn't work
859. 38:12very well with them Cisco
860. 38:14says have them come in have them sit
861. 38:17down with our engineers and we can solve
862. 38:19the problem
863. 38:20together compare that to no and you
864. 38:24can't make me
