  1. 0:00we both seem to be from below the Mason
  2. 0:01and Dixon line where are you from I come
  3. 0:04from Kentucky and I can honestly say one
  4. 0:07of my best friends was a colge girl and
  5. 0:10as children have no Prejudice we became
  6. 0:12very close friends interracial
  7. 0:15commissions were set up in the South
  8. 0:17these commissions were composed of
  9. 0:19responsible white and negro leaders in
  10. 0:22South and they were doing a pretty good
  11. 0:25job when there was friction between the
  12. 0:28two groups they sought to find a
  13. 0:32solution they sought to find a
  14. 0:34solution and as a result of it much of
  15. 0:37the progress that has been made in
  16. 0:40establishing good relations in the South
  17. 0:43can be laid at the door of the
  18. 0:45iterracial commission that functioned in
  19. 0:48the South and enjoyed considerable
  20. 0:50respect and Prestige I would not let
  21. 0:53that determine whether I become friend
  22. 0:55to them by the color I have found
  23. 0:58several color people that I have enjoyed
  24. 1:01their friendship the South built many
  25. 1:04new schools many of them far
  26. 1:09superior to those that were attended by
  27. 1:13white children do the best that you can
  28. 1:16with your life you are unique you have a
  29. 1:18contribution to make you have something
  30. 1:20to offer schools have a heavy
  31. 1:22reinforcement into our characters
  32. 1:24because they were black schools schools
  33. 1:26were not integrated at that time now the
  34. 1:28NAACP is gotten a token number of
  35. 1:31negroes integrated the
  36. 1:33schools they consider that a great
  37. 1:36Victory but I say it's a peric victory
  38. 1:40what is significant that this whole
  39. 1:41integration campaign coincided with uh
  40. 1:45Russia's steep up campaign in Africa and
  41. 1:48Asia the racist were getting along too
  42. 1:51well in beginning to solve their
  43. 1:52problems negro were getting jobs that
  44. 1:55never held before things were getting
  45. 1:57along pretty spoy now everything
  46. 1:59everything is just Topsy turby
  47. 2:02now the red started all of this
  48. 2:04integration stuff because they wanted
  49. 2:08the Negro to unite with the white
  50. 2:10Communists that was their objective not
  51. 2:12with the other white people but with the
  52. 2:14white
  53. 2:15communist and as a result they have
  54. 2:18destroyed all Pride amongst
  55. 2:25them I've always asked has integration
  56. 2:27helped to harm the black community
  57. 2:31knocked the black folks brains out black
  58. 2:34folk had up 100 times more before social
  59. 2:36integration
  60. 2:38hit we were looking for this social
  61. 2:40integration you know why because we had
  62. 2:43our own businesses
  63. 2:48there our own cab companies we had our
  64. 2:51own restaurants we had our own hotels we
  65. 2:53had our own school systems my family was
  66. 2:55part of one had the only black bus line
  67. 2:58in the entire United States and I say we
  68. 3:00had a bus line I'm not talking about two
  69. 3:01or three buses we had over 500 buses wow
  70. 3:06in Winston s North Carolina we had that
  71. 3:09from 1927 up to about
  72. 3:121967 we own the buses mhm we own the
  73. 3:15resource all of our mechanics was blacks
  74. 3:17all of our drivers were blacks
  75. 3:19electrician was black everything was
  76. 3:21black we don't killed our buses right
  77. 3:24social integration when all of a sudden
  78. 3:27y all start talking about Rosa Parks and
  79. 3:28Martin Luther King going down Alabama
  80. 3:30want to integrate the bus lines
  81. 3:32integrate whose bus lines I have always
  82. 3:35ridden in the back of the bus because I
  83. 3:37didn't have guts to get in the front of
  84. 3:38the bus but now the time had come I was
  85. 3:42riding in the front of the bus like once
  86. 3:44s says we want to ride on front of some
  87. 3:46white buses so we said we don't have any
  88. 3:49white buses they said well we'll get
  89. 3:50some so we can ride on the front of them
  90. 3:53I feel like a complete [ __ ] cuz I
  91. 3:54never thought about that like that whole
  92. 3:56time they did the boycott they should
  93. 3:58have been trying to establish their own
  94. 4:00bus company as opposed to wanting to
  95. 4:02ride I never thought about that that
  96. 4:03y'all boycott for a year just to want to
  97. 4:05ride on the front see you're a smart man
  98. 4:07I never talk about that they don't want
  99. 4:09any more negro business and that negro
  100. 4:12business which exists they say that that
  101. 4:14should be integrated they do not want to
  102. 4:17build anything and they have nothing to
  103. 4:20offer to any other group but they want
  104. 4:23to force themselves everywhere and as a
  105. 4:26result they create friction our new
  106. 4:30generation was no longer willing to go
  107. 4:32slow as our parents were we turned our
  108. 4:35backs on legalism it was too slow we
  109. 4:38prefer to use with new energy the
  110. 4:40classic tools of more active riding and
  111. 4:43sitting in for freedom for first class
  112. 4:46citizenship we made sure our Voice Was
  113. 4:49Heard Dr JH Jackson has warned
  114. 4:52constantly that Communists are directing
  115. 4:54the Revolutionary activities of the
  116. 4:56radical black power element America he
  117. 4:59says he represents the Negro he does not
  118. 5:01represent anybody but himself he is
  119. 5:03looking for security that's what our
  120. 5:04elders are looking for but we do not
  121. 5:07want security many of the students work
  122. 5:09with Dr Martin Luther King's Southern
  123. 5:12Christian leadership conference we have
  124. 5:14utterly pushed to sign the old
  125. 5:18stated adult negro leadership in the
  126. 5:22South and we have organized ourselves
  127. 5:26into student groups into student protest
  128. 5:28nonviolent protest group and we have
  129. 5:31seen real change in the South within the
  130. 5:34last past year and a half it was sort of
  131. 5:36something that you were caught up in a
  132. 5:39storm you know you walked out one day
  133. 5:42and the wind was blowing and the rain
  134. 5:44was coming down and everybody around you
  135. 5:47was talking about the movement and
  136. 5:50whether you wanted to or not you had to
  137. 5:52pay attention to it and I did I didn't
  138. 5:54understand a lot of the whole economic
  139. 5:57issues and there was a lot lot of
  140. 6:00naivity in it but it was also a
  141. 6:02wonderful dream integration was never an
  142. 6:05issue for me or for many others but it
  143. 6:09was the issue that I think separated me
  144. 6:12from the Civil Rights Movement what a
  145. 6:13lot of people fa to understand about Jim
  146. 6:15Crow is that what Jim Crow was was stat
  147. 6:20mandated segregation in other words the
  148. 6:23state trying to play a role in
  149. 6:27determining where blacks can go and
  150. 6:29where rights can go I think that Force
  151. 6:31racial segregation is
  152. 6:32Criminal and unconstitutional and I
  153. 6:35think Force racial integration is
  154. 6:37Criminal and unconstitutional I think
  155. 6:39either one of them is cruel many people
  156. 6:42both black and white understood just as
  157. 6:44Governor Maddox did that it is not only
  158. 6:47volatile but actually unconstitutional
  159. 6:49for the government to force segregation
  160. 6:53and by the same token for the government
  161. 6:54to force integration any effort to force
  162. 6:57integration upon whites is actually
  163. 7:00hypocritical if a white man puts his arm
  164. 7:02around me voluntarily that's Brotherhood
  165. 7:06but if you hold a gun on him and make
  166. 7:07him embrace me and pretend to be
  167. 7:10friendly or brotherly toward me then
  168. 7:12that's not Brotherhood that's hypocrisy
  169. 7:14and what America is trying to do is pass
  170. 7:17laws to force whites to pretend that
  171. 7:20they want Negroes into their schools or
  172. 7:22in their places of employment well this
  173. 7:25is hypocrisy and this makes a worse
  174. 7:27relationship between black and white
  175. 7:30rather than if if this could be brought
  176. 7:32about on a voluntary basis the NAACP
  177. 7:34Martin Luther King and the Johnson
  178. 7:37Administration collaborated together to
  179. 7:39pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which
  180. 7:42in their mind would go ahead and force
  181. 7:45integration
  182. 7:47anyway the journalists in the 60s were
  183. 7:50themselves advocates for social justice
  184. 7:53and so naturally they did everything
  185. 7:56they can to emphasize and highlight
  186. 7:58so-called leaders of the Civil Rights
  187. 8:00Movement segregation to the average
  188. 8:02negro means being held
  189. 8:04back he's looking for Progress he wants
  190. 8:07to move forward in the American
  191. 8:09mainstream segregation holds him back
  192. 8:12what they didn't tell you is that there
  193. 8:13was a vast disconnect between the NAACP
  194. 8:16and ordinary workingclass black men on
  195. 8:19the question of integration up to this
  196. 8:21present time it hasn't affected me at
  197. 8:25all as far as
  198. 8:27uh my work and my social activities up
  199. 8:32until this present time I can say it
  200. 8:34hasn't affected me these are strong
  201. 8:36willed proud men who didn't see their
  202. 8:38dignity tied up in what white people
  203. 8:40thought about them or whether or not
  204. 8:42white people accepted them King was able
  205. 8:45to do what salinsky later writes about
  206. 8:48in his book Rules for Radicals where he
  207. 8:50says the Revolutionary organizer must
  208. 8:53create disenchantment and discontent
  209. 8:56King was obviously able to do that
  210. 8:57rhetorically with his to America speech
  211. 9:00where he painted his picture of Black
  212. 9:01America which was completely different
  213. 9:03than the actual lived experiences that
  214. 9:06most black people had at the time there
  215. 9:08are
  216. 9:09literally two
  217. 9:11Americans an American Negro walk the
  218. 9:15streets daily in search for jobs that do
  219. 9:18not exist and they find themselves
  220. 9:22perishing on a lonely island of poverty
  221. 9:25in the midst of a vast ocean of material
  222. 9:29Prosperity this new depiction in a sense
  223. 9:32subjected black people to what white
  224. 9:35people were willing to do for them how
  225. 9:37white people were willing to vote what
  226. 9:39the government was willing to do in the
  227. 9:41eyes of the larger society it made black
  228. 9:43people look desperate it may people feel
  229. 9:45that black people's dignity really is
  230. 9:47tied up in what white people do this all
  231. 9:50played a part in emotionalizing people
  232. 9:52to join the ranks of the Civil Rights
  233. 9:55Movement some of the Liberals and the
  234. 9:57Communists and all of that ilk along
  235. 10:00with NAACP leaders have been demanding
  236. 10:03more and more Federal power they want to
  237. 10:06take away all power from the
  238. 10:09states and when this sort of thing
  239. 10:12happens then we're on the road to
  240. 10:15dictatorship and once you have given the
  241. 10:18federal government that power it can be
  242. 10:21used against you depends upon who seizes
  243. 10:24control of the federal government I
  244. 10:27might say Bill this is my Chief
  245. 10:30worry that we have put so much power in
  246. 10:33the office of the presidency that
  247. 10:35someday the wrong man could come along
  248. 10:39I'm beginning a new effort to fix as
  249. 10:41much of our immigration system as I can
  250. 10:43on my own without Congress and I
  251. 10:46wouldn't be so concerned about whether
  252. 10:48he could use these powers to perpetuate
  253. 10:51himself in office but how he would use
  254. 10:53these powers to destroy people that
  255. 10:56disagreed with him if you have a problem
  256. 10:58figuring out whether you're for Trump
  257. 11:00and you ain't black to uh pile up uh
  258. 11:04voters where voters don't usually pile
  259. 11:06up Senator Bernie Sanders said he
  260. 11:08supported voting rights for felons in
  261. 11:11prison including the worst of the worst
  262. 11:13I think
  263. 11:14Johnson is fully aware of the powers
  264. 11:17that he has and he certainly has used
  265. 11:20them and will use them we should be
  266. 11:22constantly encouraging the Congress to
  267. 11:24go slow take it easy study research uh
  268. 11:28we should be investing private funds of
  269. 11:31Foundations which are being wasted in my
  270. 11:33opinion too much on things that are not
  271. 11:36strictly
  272. 11:42American American history is so complex
  273. 11:46even how we understand our history is
  274. 11:49complex protesters were out today
  275. 11:51pushing for the removal of a statue at
  276. 11:53Columbus Park this symbol must come down
  277. 11:56when conservatives are trying to Stave
  278. 11:59off the
  279. 12:00left as they come for George Washington
  280. 12:03and Thomas
  281. 12:05Jefferson their sort of Defense would be
  282. 12:08well at that time period everybody owned
  283. 12:11slaves and we're the first country to
  284. 12:13abolish slavery and you know these types
  285. 12:15of things the American Revolution caused
  286. 12:17people to question slavery that birth
  287. 12:19abolition movements I was very offended
  288. 12:22for him to say that nobody criticized
  289. 12:24slavery until the the slaveholding
  290. 12:28America without fathers decided to raise
  291. 12:29it disqualifies 200 when progressives
  292. 12:33raise the slaveholding legacy of our
  293. 12:36founding fathers to conservatives the
  294. 12:39conservative response is generally these
  295. 12:41are men of their times and they have to
  296. 12:42be understood as such time that black
  297. 12:45but some of the same conservatives will
  298. 12:46turn around and indict King and say his
  299. 12:49views are so incompatible with the
  300. 12:51American founding and our principles
  301. 12:54that we should reconsider the extent to
  302. 12:56which we lionize him the whole reason
  303. 12:58that we even lionize or popularize
  304. 13:01someone like a Martin Luther King who by
  305. 13:02the way was an allout Marxist who didn't
  306. 13:05believe in God he said so in his own
  307. 13:07papers that he did not believe in the
  308. 13:09resurrection of the Christ it's very
  309. 13:11strange for someone who professes to be
  310. 13:13a Christian Pastor he didn't write any
  311. 13:15of his speeches his dissertation was
  312. 13:17plagiarized those in his inner circle
  313. 13:19his speech writers were themselves
  314. 13:21Communists dley Levon was a treasurer
  315. 13:23for a Communist front group in New York
  316. 13:25byard Rustin was a communist he's the
  317. 13:27one who taught Marley the king the
  318. 13:29strategy of nonviolence he was a
  319. 13:34[Music]
  320. 13:37concoction to me it's logically
  321. 13:39inconsistent to say that the slave
  322. 13:41master should be given due deference and
  323. 13:44have his positions analyzed with a sense
  324. 13:46of nuance but thei is once and for all
  325. 13:51and forever will be outside of the
  326. 13:53bounds of any type of respect and honor
  327. 13:56in terms of of our political history I
  328. 13:59can certainly more so understand why a
  329. 14:02Southern Baptist preacher who is maybe
  330. 14:05two generations removed from slavery
  331. 14:07would be in favor of Marxism than I can
  332. 14:11the co-founders of BLM in 2016 I'm not
  333. 14:14saying I agree with King's economic
  334. 14:16philosophy but I understand why he would
  335. 14:17have it well touche but the reality is
  336. 14:22that Martin Luther King and the Civil
  337. 14:24Rights Movement served in America as a
  338. 14:27kind of marxist trojan horse from the
  339. 14:30outside it appeared to be moderate and
  340. 14:33pro-american this is a gift we should
  341. 14:36take it to the Temple of and it's for
  342. 14:38this reason that America accepted it but
  343. 14:41when you look at the results that
  344. 14:43followed which were intentional an
  345. 14:45expanded government various socialist
  346. 14:48policies a heightened welfare state the
  347. 14:50facts reveal that this wasn't ignorance
  348. 14:52but malice they quite literally wanted
  349. 14:54to
  350. 14:57sovietized apeer said that the American
  351. 15:01political landscape is the perfect one
  352. 15:04for communism because Americans believe
  353. 15:06that they live in a democracy communist
  354. 15:09philosophy or socialism easily and has
  355. 15:11to adapt to the country uh in which it's
  356. 15:15taking place in this country there will
  357. 15:16never be
  358. 15:18socialism unless the overwhelming
  359. 15:20majority of the American people
  360. 15:22passionately want it and want it so
  361. 15:24badly that they're going to go out and
  362. 15:25get it it's one of the things that gets
  363. 15:27me so excited when I start thinking
  364. 15:28about the possibilities of socialism in
  365. 15:30this country the civil rights movement
  366. 15:33has already begun to develop certain
  367. 15:35program it is revolutionary and it is
  368. 15:38also I think much more democratic so you
  369. 15:40can democratize social issues and you
  370. 15:43can in a sense pull out the heartstrings
  371. 15:45of America they will then let their
  372. 15:47guard down and they will democratize
  373. 15:49socialism into reality and so I don't
  374. 15:51see Marthur King fighting against that I
  375. 15:52see Marther King as a participant in
  376. 15:54that which is a subversive thing it
  377. 15:57seems to me that the Civil Right
  378. 15:58movement must now begin to
  379. 16:02organize
  380. 16:03for the guaranteed annual income begin
  381. 16:07to organize the question arises well
  382. 16:09what other options did he have well for
  383. 16:12me I think one of the reasons why
  384. 16:13there's such a mental block for people
  385. 16:15is because we've all went to the same
  386. 16:17schools we all graduated from the same
  387. 16:19schools we all read the same textbooks
  388. 16:22you know we all understand how MLK was
  389. 16:25this good moral leader who came to inoc
  390. 16:27sense construct the way things were and
  391. 16:30there was no one else no one else knew
  392. 16:32how to do it but Martin Luther King
  393. 16:33here's a guy who got it and he was a
  394. 16:35Christian pastor and he was all these
  395. 16:36things much of what we have learned
  396. 16:38about him turned out to be either false
  397. 16:40or inaccurate or you know a myth or what
  398. 16:43have
  399. 16:46you Dr JH Jackson head of the largest
  400. 16:50negro Church organization in America the
  401. 16:53National Baptist convention USA with
  402. 16:55nearly 7 million members has worned
  403. 16:58constantly that Communists are directing
  404. 17:00the Revolutionary activities of the
  405. 17:02radical black power El there were other
  406. 17:04people like Joseph H Jackson who
  407. 17:07believed in the fundamental Christian
  408. 17:09Gospel not the Social Gospel not
  409. 17:12Liberation theology the fundamental
  410. 17:14Christian Gospel the inherency of the
  411. 17:16scriptures the resurrection of Christ
  412. 17:19like he believed in those things
  413. 17:20fundamentally what is uh your feelings
  414. 17:24toward the New Black theology those of
  415. 17:26us who are Christians we don't believe
  416. 17:29that uh you can have a theory of God
  417. 17:33based on color I don't believe when you
  418. 17:35look at his engagement and civil rights
  419. 17:37it wasn't this same brand of civil
  420. 17:40rights that MLK was pushing in that we
  421. 17:42vest certain unconstitutional powers in
  422. 17:46the federal government which widens that
  423. 17:48power and in a sense usurps our rights
  424. 17:52as As Americans because you know to Bob
  425. 17:53Woodson's point we shouldn't have given
  426. 17:55the federal government the right to
  427. 17:57force businesses to integrate rather we
  428. 17:59should have merely taken away the
  429. 18:02state's right to segregate integration
  430. 18:04was never our goal we never saw
  431. 18:07integration as a solution to the
  432. 18:09problems we were seeking
  433. 18:11desegregation and I think confusion on
  434. 18:13that point has continued to erode the
  435. 18:17self the collective self-confidence of
  436. 18:19the black community today so integration
  437. 18:21was never uh uh a a an issue for me or
  438. 18:26for many others but was the issue that I
  439. 18:30think uh separated me from the Civil
  440. 18:32Rights Movement both the problem and MLK
  441. 18:35solution are unconstitutional says Bob
  442. 18:37Woodson says Barry Goldwater and many
  443. 18:40others even Malcolm X ironically any
  444. 18:43effort to force integration upon whites
  445. 18:46is actually uh hypocritical it is a form
  446. 18:49of hypocrisy involved if a white man
  447. 18:52puts his arm around me voluntarily
  448. 18:54that's Brotherhood but if uh you if you
  449. 18:57hold a gun on him and make him embrace
  450. 18:59me and pretend to be friendly or
  451. 19:02brotherly toward me then that's not
  452. 19:04Brotherhood that's hypocrisy when I look
  453. 19:06at someone like a Joseph H Jackson he
  454. 19:08argued that to the extent that the white
  455. 19:11man doesn't give you a job it's
  456. 19:12incumbent upon you to build your own
  457. 19:14businesses and to hire your brother and
  458. 19:16your sister and your neighbor that you
  459. 19:18aren't begging someone else for a job
  460. 19:20and so he didn't only talk about this
  461. 19:22but he exemplified this there were a
  462. 19:25bunch of sharecroppers in the South who
  463. 19:26were getting cheated by Farmers Jackson
  464. 19:29was a president of the National Baptist
  465. 19:31convention the convention bought 400
  466. 19:33Acres of Farmland in the South and they
  467. 19:37allowed these black sharecroppers to
  468. 19:38work the land for free and to the extent
  469. 19:41that they raised money for their crops
  470. 19:43they got to keep in Pocket that money so
  471. 19:46long as they were saving that money to
  472. 19:47buy their own Farmland so they can move
  473. 19:49from sharecroppers to Farmers and not
  474. 19:51have to depend on anybody else for their
  475. 19:53daily bread the convention under the
  476. 19:55behest of Jackson did many of these
  477. 19:57things now the reason why I bring up
  478. 20:00Jackson in comparison to Martin Luther
  479. 20:03King is because as you know Ebenezer
  480. 20:04Baptist Church was under the umbrella of
  481. 20:07the National Baptist convention Martin
  482. 20:08Luther King fresh out of Crower very
  483. 20:10young very ambitious he wanted to be the
  484. 20:13president of the National Baptist
  485. 20:15convention he was overwhelmingly
  486. 20:17rejected and it got pretty contentious
  487. 20:19someone was pushed off a stage and died
  488. 20:21someone from Martin Luther King's little
  489. 20:23ilk pushed this young man off the stage
  490. 20:25and he died so it got pretty contentious
  491. 20:27and they ended up kicking Martin Luther
  492. 20:28King and his friends out of the National
  493. 20:31Baptist convention this was before his
  494. 20:33face was plastered on Time Magazine and
  495. 20:35and and all the rest of it so what they
  496. 20:37decided to do at the suggestion of
  497. 20:40Stanley leveson was start a new Baptist
  498. 20:44convention which would rival the
  499. 20:45National Baptist convention so they
  500. 20:46started the Progressive National Baptist
  501. 20:49convention uh of course it didn't take
  502. 20:51off it didn't do anything so they
  503. 20:52started this Southern leadership
  504. 20:54conference and then they moved from
  505. 20:56there to the southern Christian
  506. 20:56leadership conference so the southern
  507. 20:58Christian leadership conference and its
  508. 21:01concoction was the result of the fact
  509. 21:04that Martin Luther King in his campaign
  510. 21:06was not popular to these Negroes in the
  511. 21:08South as much as Joseph H Jackson who
  512. 21:11was a continuation of the kinds of
  513. 21:13things that Booker T Washington talked
  514. 21:14about Martin Luther King wanted to move
  515. 21:16the National Baptist convention into a
  516. 21:19new more radical if I can use that word
  517. 21:22Social Gospel and to get away from the
  518. 21:24kind of fundamental gospel that Joseph H
  519. 21:26Jackson and his ilk was preaching
  520. 21:28he faed to do so started the southern
  521. 21:30Christian leadership conference the
  522. 21:32advantage that Martin Luther King and
  523. 21:33his ilk had that Joseph hson did not
  524. 21:35have is that once the success of the
  525. 21:39Montgomery Bus Boycott took off and and
  526. 21:41all the things the media basically
  527. 21:44swarmed around Martin Luther King they
  528. 21:46made him larger than than life Stanley
  529. 21:48Levon who was a phenomenal publicist
  530. 21:51he's the one who lined up the interviews
  531. 21:53who was able to mobilize the media to
  532. 21:56put cameras in front of the Silver
  533. 21:57Rights movie movement under the beaz
  534. 21:58Marther King and the rest is history and
  535. 22:01so Joseph H Jackson was all but erased
  536. 22:04from these kinds of conversations that
  537. 22:06we talk about it always comes down to
  538. 22:07Malcolm X and Martin Luther King yeah
  539. 22:10the founding fathers were trying to
  540. 22:12wrestle away their right to Independence
  541. 22:15not by way of deception but by way of
  542. 22:17laying it all out on the table they
  543. 22:19issued a declaration of independence
  544. 22:21said this is what we do not like about
  545. 22:23our leadership about our government and
  546. 22:26we are going to go to war to fight for
  547. 22:28our freedom Martin Luther King and his
  548. 22:31elk didn't so much issue a similar kind
  549. 22:34of Declaration of Independence a lot of
  550. 22:36the things that he did for which he is
  551. 22:38lionized if it's true that those things
  552. 22:40were done as a subversive tactic is it
  553. 22:42then fair to compare him to someone like
  554. 22:44the Founding Fathers as is always the
  555. 22:46case when whenever I see something that
  556. 22:49you produce I'm learning a lot uh I
  557. 22:52wasn't um particularly familiar with
  558. 22:55Joseph H Jackson so that'll give me some
  559. 22:57homework to do I I think the comparison
  560. 23:00to the founding fathers is is fair in
  561. 23:03that in life a man's Creeds often at
  562. 23:07various points in his life will not
  563. 23:09match his
  564. 23:10deeds and and yes did the founding
  565. 23:13father struggle with slavery sure to
  566. 23:17some extent but I'm not a person that
  567. 23:20says oh we need a new founding we need
  568. 23:23new National symbols because I I I
  569. 23:26understand that people are flawed
  570. 23:29and I'm not arrogant enough to think
  571. 23:32that because those men had their moral
  572. 23:37inconsistencies that we in our
  573. 23:39generation don't have our own I do not
  574. 23:41agree with lionizing or deifying any
  575. 23:44person but I think we should deal with
  576. 23:46everyone's Legacy openly honestly and
  577. 23:52consistently and that that that is where
  578. 23:55I tend to come down on these things
  579. 23:57would a different set of leaders during
  580. 24:01that that era have produced different
  581. 24:03results quite
  582. 24:05possibly yeah it's quite possible and I
  583. 24:08I do share your sentiment in terms of
  584. 24:11the difference between integration and
  585. 24:14desegregation but I also know I have the
  586. 24:17luxury of having that opinion having
  587. 24:19never grown up in a segregated quote
  588. 24:21unquote school now to be fair and I know
  589. 24:25you you're historian so you know these
  590. 24:27things there are multiple examples
  591. 24:29across history even recent history of
  592. 24:33despised minority groups flourishing
  593. 24:36economically in certain countries but
  594. 24:39again when you are a small minority in a
  595. 24:42country that is openly hostile to you
  596. 24:44even if you dominate part of the economy
  597. 24:48sometimes that can make the majority
  598. 24:51even more hostile so there's a there's a
  599. 24:54sense in which the law is there to
  600. 24:56protect you so so yeah so net net we
  601. 24:59benefit from the national correction
  602. 25:01that he helped sort of Institute in
  603. 25:03terms of passing some of those civil
  604. 25:05rights laws voting rights laws so on and
  605. 25:07so on and so forth but the heirs to
  606. 25:09King's throne so to speak particularly
  607. 25:11the black preachers and the
  608. 25:13politicians and i' include the pundits
  609. 25:16the professors and the performers the
  610. 25:17people I call the aristocracy who think
  611. 25:20that they are operating his legacy and
  612. 25:22and you made this point earlier the ones
  613. 25:23who see systemic racism and and income
  614. 25:27inequality
  615. 25:28as bigger sins than sin
  616. 25:31itself I think those men and
  617. 25:35women have in many respects squandered
  618. 25:39the Legacy they have
  619. 25:42acquired a tremendous amount of
  620. 25:45political power and political Capital
  621. 25:48like folks are in Corporate America and
  622. 25:51in the CED and became president and all
  623. 25:53so on and so on and so
  624. 25:55forth but I would argue that these
  625. 25:57people
  626. 25:58people sort of secured the bag so to
  627. 26:01speak but fumbled the ball and I think
  628. 26:04the people who tried to copy him have
  629. 26:07made in many respects things worse in
  630. 26:11the black community uh respectfully I I
  631. 26:14don't believe that these individuals the
  632. 26:18William Barbers the Jesse Jackson the Al
  633. 26:20Sharpton and others The Liberation
  634. 26:22theologians as as you put it uh I don't
  635. 26:25believe that they are a deviation from
  636. 26:27MLK nor do I believe that they hijacked
  637. 26:30MLK or or tried to in a sense merely
  638. 26:33mimic MLK I think that they are a
  639. 26:35continuation of MLK and had MLK not been
  640. 26:38assassinated he would have been doing
  641. 26:40the same things that Jesse Jackson and
  642. 26:42others were doing the reason I can say
  643. 26:44that definitively is because you see him
  644. 26:46you see him doing that prior to his
  645. 26:49having been assassinated where he was
  646. 26:51going into these towns and basically
  647. 26:54like the whole nonviolent thing is so is
  648. 26:58so brilliant it's just so brilliant
  649. 27:00because you build these kind of
  650. 27:02situations in these moments and you know
  651. 27:04what going to happen you know it's going
  652. 27:06to ensue you do all of this knowing that
  653. 27:09the threat at the end of all of it is a
  654. 27:12riot an allout
  655. 27:13Riot and you can then use that as
  656. 27:16political fodder a riot is the language
  657. 27:19of the unheard social justice and
  658. 27:23progress are the absolute guaran of of
  659. 27:27Riot prevention the whole point of
  660. 27:30nonviolence is you get people into the
  661. 27:32streets you don't pull permits so that
  662. 27:35the traffic can be regulated and the
  663. 27:37noise can be controlled and all the
  664. 27:39things you you have these unlawful
  665. 27:40marches and to the extent that the
  666. 27:42sheriff department shows up and tries to
  667. 27:44remove you if you aren't being compliant
  668. 27:47you're continuing marching then they
  669. 27:49have to necessarily remove You by force
  670. 27:51and not only that but a lot of these
  671. 27:52individuals who were a part of the
  672. 27:54marches weren't themselves Southerners
  673. 27:55these were Freedom Writers and others
  674. 27:56who were coming down from the North and
  675. 27:58being agitative when you look at what
  676. 28:01Jesse Jackson was doing in the90s where
  677. 28:04they were going to these predominantly
  678. 28:06white corporations that were situated in
  679. 28:08predominately white areas and they were
  680. 28:11saying that they were discriminating
  681. 28:12because they don't have enough black
  682. 28:14employees again these these same kind of
  683. 28:16Shakedown tactics that MLK was doing so
  684. 28:19too was Jesse doing in the 90s and so I
  685. 28:21don't know that MLK would have been
  686. 28:24displeased with what his proverbial Sons
  687. 28:26were doing because he was he was doing
  688. 28:27the same exact things and not only that
  689. 28:29philosophically ideologically he aligned
  690. 28:33with where these people are for that
  691. 28:35reason I don't know I think we have
  692. 28:36enough evidence to to say definitively
  693. 28:38where MLK would have landed I I I do
  694. 28:41want to address the the the point that
  695. 28:42you made right and and this is here's
  696. 28:44here's
  697. 28:45my little of overarching
  698. 28:48response is that you know we may think
  699. 28:53that based on a person's trajectory we
  700. 28:55have a sense of where they would land
  701. 28:58and often times that's that's the best
  702. 28:59that you can do but I I often remind
  703. 29:02myself like eldis Cleaver who I think
  704. 29:04started off as the minister of
  705. 29:06information for the Black Panther
  706. 29:08Party uh when he when he died in
  707. 29:121998 he was a Conservative Republican
  708. 29:15who was a part of the Church of uh L Day
  709. 29:19Saints right so it's not to say that a
  710. 29:22person can't change their perspective
  711. 29:26over time because many do Tom Thomas Sol
  712. 29:30was famous for saying that he he used to
  713. 29:31be a Marxist and then one seme summer
  714. 29:35working at Department of Labor sort of
  715. 29:37did what classes with milit freedom
  716. 29:41Freeman could not do which is to to make
  717. 29:44him drop his Marxist leanings well
  718. 29:46Justice Thomas said you know that he he
  719. 29:50I don't know if he was officially part
  720. 29:52of the Black Panthers but he he
  721. 29:54certainly was was sympathetic to their
  722. 29:56IDE ology so yeah that's true and and
  723. 29:59then the other thing I'm just and this
  724. 30:01is sort of a cultural thing and not to
  725. 30:04be you know taking with a grain of salt
  726. 30:07but um the show Bo The Boondocks which
  727. 30:10probably could not be made nowadays when
  728. 30:13they had the MLK episode and and you
  729. 30:15know Dr King right was resurrected from
  730. 30:19the dead
  731. 30:22yeah he was very critical of things that
  732. 30:25he saw in the black community what
  733. 30:27happened
  734. 30:29huie what happened to our people yeah
  735. 30:32but this was a
  736. 30:34cartoon true but but but what I'm saying
  737. 30:36is it's a cartoon and they could have
  738. 30:38they could have written his character in
  739. 30:40any number of different ways they they
  740. 30:42could have made him permed out Al
  741. 30:46Sharpton clone but they didn't it's hard
  742. 30:49to say where a person would end up
  743. 30:52particularly when you're talking about
  744. 30:53someone who's assassinated in his late
  745. 30:5430s I want to say 39 where he would have
  746. 30:57ended up at 60 years old because people
  747. 30:59do mature often times they become more
  748. 31:02conservative with with age they would
  749. 31:04get to see how their ideas ended up
  750. 31:07being used and and what the results were
  751. 31:11I find it hard to believe that Dr King
  752. 31:14thought to himself and one day the guys
  753. 31:17that come after me they are going to
  754. 31:19make sure that pregnant men have access
  755. 31:22to reproductive health care I find that
  756. 31:25very very hard to believe now maybe Gay
  757. 31:29Right Stuff given that beay Rustin was
  758. 31:32one of his closest advisors maybe but
  759. 31:36even that at that time would have
  760. 31:38been something along the lines of gay
  761. 31:42men mimicking the sort of
  762. 31:46Bourgeois Suburban values being able to
  763. 31:50get a job at
  764. 31:53NBC and buy a house with their partner
  765. 31:57n roommate you know that type of thing
  766. 32:00and pass on property that I highly doubt
  767. 32:04even in be rustin's wiress dreams that
  768. 32:07he was thinking look the first black
  769. 32:09president is going to be in office when
  770. 32:12gay marriage is made legal in the United
  771. 32:15States and soon after that is going to
  772. 32:18come
  773. 32:19transgenderism and a drag queen in every
  774. 32:22school I find that hard to believe and
  775. 32:24and that's what the guys today are
  776. 32:27pushing so what I'm saying is I I want
  777. 32:30to hold them responsible for their own
