- 0:00Missing kids who came back, what
- 0:01actually saved you? I was filling out my
- 0:02little brother's soccer forms when I
- 0:04clicked the wrong link and my stomach
- 0:05went cold. It was the league's team page
- 0:07and anyone could open it. No login, no
- 0:08password. Every kid's first name, last
- 0:10initial, jersey number, and a practice
- 0:11calendar with field numbers and times.
- 0:13Otis Bain, number eight, Tuesdays and
- 0:15Thursdays 5:30, field three. I emailed
- 0:17the league. They wrote back, "Our
- 0:18community page has helped families stay
- 0:19connected" with an exclamation point.
- 0:21So, I made my own rule. If anybody ever
- 0:22said they were taking Otis somewhere,
- 0:24even someone he knew, they had to say a
- 0:25word first. When he was three, he called
- 0:27thunderstorms sky trucks. That was the
- 0:28word. No sky truck. He screams and runs
- 0:30toward he can see. He laughed at me.
- 0:32"Nell, that's a spy thing." I made him
- 0:34say it back nine times anyway.
- 0:35"Nothing's going to happen to me," he
- 0:36said. Two weeks later, he came home from
- 0:37practice with a water bottle I'd never
- 0:39seen, stainless steel, the expensive
- 0:40kind. His name down the side in white
- 0:42vinyl, Otis, spelled right, under it an
- 0:44eight. "A man at the fence gave it to
- 0:45him," he said. "Found it at the
- 0:46tournament, been holding it for weeks."
- 0:47My hands went numb. There was no
- 0:49tournament. Somebody bought a bottle,
- 0:50ordered lettering with my brother's name
- 0:51and number, waited days for it to come
- 0:53in, and drove to field three on a
- 0:54Thursday. I said we had to tell Mom. He
- 0:56grabbed my sleeve. "She'll make me
- 0:57quit." He'd gotten a starting spot two
- 0:58weeks earlier, the first of his life,
- 0:59and was already talking himself out of
- 1:00it. He was nine and he wanted his number
- 1:02more than he wanted to be careful. So, I
- 1:03made a deal. He could keep playing, but
- 1:04I walked him there and back, and every
- 1:06night he said the word out loud to me. I
- 1:07saw the man on the third night, green
- 1:08polo, lanyard, clipboard, an orange
- 1:10volunteer shirt over his arm. He wasn't
- 1:11watching the ball. He was watching the
- 1:12lot, tracking which cars left early.
- 1:14When he caught me staring, he smiled and
- 1:15lifted the clipboard like we were on the
- 1:17same side. Coach Ruiz said he was Ray
- 1:18Doss, registered three weeks back, ran
- 1:20the cone drills, totally fine. That
- 1:21night I saved the league office number
- 1:22under its real name, so I'd know what a
- 1:24real message from them looked like.
- 1:25Saturday's game got called at half time
- 1:26for lightning. I was under the awning
- 1:28across the complex when my phone buzzed.
- 1:29"Parents are rerouting to the north gate
- 1:30for pickup." Here's the part I got
- 1:32right. It wasn't the number I'd saved.
- 1:33It was one digit off and the league's
- 1:34name was typed at the bottom like a
- 1:36signature, which the real office never
- 1:37did. I looked at field three and Otis
- 1:39wasn't on it. I ran, not to the north
- 1:40gate, to the exit line, because there
- 1:41was one road out of that complex and in
- 1:43that rain it was 40 cars deep and
- 1:45crawling. I saw the green polo four cars
- 1:46from the road, the orange shirt pulled
- 1:47over it now like the last piece of a
- 1:49costume, and in the passenger seat was
- 1:50my brother holding that bottle in both
- 1:52hands. I found out later what happened
- 1:53in there. He told Otis their mom had
- 1:54fallen at the house and he was taking
- 1:56him to her. And my brother, who was
- 1:57nine, who thought the whole thing was a
- 1:58spy game, asked him for the sky truck
- 2:00twice. The man told him to sit back and
- 2:01buckle his seat belt. I got to the
- 2:02passenger door, pulled the handle, and
- 2:04it was locked. I screamed his name loud
- 2:05enough that people two rows back put
- 2:06their windows down. Otis was already
- 2:08screaming, not words, just the sound I'd
- 2:09taught him to make. The man tried to
- 2:11swing onto the grass. A dad in a white
- 2:12pickup two cars ahead threw it in
- 2:13reverse into his front fender. Then the
- 2:15woman behind did the same. And in about
- 2:1611 seconds there was no forward, no
- 2:18back, and no grass. Somebody's mother
- 2:19stood in front of the hood with her
- 2:20phone up and would not move. He put both
- 2:22hands on the wheel where everyone could
- 2:23see them and sat there while 40 people
- 2:25got out of their cars in the downpour,
- 2:26ringed the car, and waited. The orange
- 2:27shirt was real. He'd registered as Ray
- 2:29Doss, and the league never ran a
- 2:30background check because the form said
- 2:32checks were optional for non-coaching
- 2:33volunteers. The pickup text came from a
- 2:35spoofed number. In his car, police found
- 2:36a second set of plates under the spare,
- 2:38a booster seat still sealed in plastic,
- 2:40and a printed copy of that roster page.
- 2:41Three names on it were highlighted. Otis
- 2:43was the second one. The detective told
- 2:44my mother the same name had turned up at
- 2:46two other leagues in two other counties.
- 2:48Neither had checked either. The league
- 2:49took the page down Monday. They handed a
- 2:50stranger my brother's name for free. He
- 2:52just couldn't guess two words. That's
- 2:53the only reason I still have a brother.
