Missed Cow Hooves Were So Overgrown She Struggled To Walk — Transcript

- 0:00That is a very big foot. And just for
- 0:02clarity, it's [music] not supposed to
- 0:04look like that. And from the front, it
- 0:06definitely doesn't look any better. This
- 0:08is the Hoof GP. And an absolutely
- 0:10massive back [music] foot.
- 0:15[singing]
- 0:16>> When I see you dance and the moments
- 0:18when I fall [music and singing]
- 0:20and go slow,
- 0:23I fall into you. [singing and music]
- 0:30>> [music]
- 0:32>> These hoodies and these Christmas
- 0:33pajamas are also back in stock, but they
- 0:35keep selling out really quickly. So, if
- 0:37you would like this Highland Cow hoodie
- 0:39or these [music] Christmas pajamas, then
- 0:41be as quick as you possibly can because
- 0:43they will sell out probably very
- 0:45quickly. If this food hadn't been so
- 0:48big, I'd be saying, "Look at how
- 0:49overgrown this food is." But
- 0:51comparatively, it doesn't look that bad.
- 0:53Although, it [music] is definitely still
- 0:55really overgrown. Right, let's separate
- 0:57the claws so we can work on them
- 0:58individually.
- 0:59>> Here in southwest Scotland, many of the
- 1:01cows live very natural style lifestyles.
- 1:04These cows [music] have been out grazing
- 1:06on the pastures all spring and all
- 1:09summertime, and they haven't been
- 1:11wearing their feet down. Our [music]
- 1:13land is saturated with moisture from the
- 1:15amount of rain we get, meaning that they
- 1:18don't wear [music] their feet at all.
- 1:20Cow's feet grow at approximately 7 mm
- 1:23per [music] month. So over the course of
- 1:256 months, they can and do often get very
- 1:28overgrown. But when you see cow's feet
- 1:31like this that aren't worn [music] at
- 1:32all towards the toe, you immediately
- 1:34assume there is a problem. And that
- 1:37[music] there definitely is in this
- 1:39case.
- 1:49Her feet are sort of blackish bluish
- 1:52color. That is pigmentation. [music]
- 1:54Just like the color of your skin or my
- 1:56skin, her feet have pigmentation and it
- 1:58leads to [music] that color. A
- 2:00sidebyside comparison shows the huge
- 2:02difference between before she was
- 2:04trimmed [music] and now. She'll be much
- 2:07more comfortable. However, this back
- 2:09right foot [music] is clearly still in
- 2:11the before state, and it is absolutely
- 2:14colossal. I'm washing her foot off to
- 2:17try to get rid of any little stones that
- 2:19are stuck in the undulations, stuck in
- 2:21the small cavities between the flaps of
- 2:23loose huorn. If I leave any, the grinder
- 2:26can flick them out and hit them against
- 2:28my hands, which seriously hurts. Right.
- 2:32Anyway, the task at hand is a very big
- 2:35one, so we best be getting on with it.
- 2:38That foot is absolutely huge. I separate
- 2:42the claws using a nozzle so that I can
- 2:44concentrate on one without accidentally
- 2:47[music] trimming the other. Even the
- 2:49inner claw is actually overgrown. It's
- 2:51just that this outer or lateral one is
- 2:54so huge that the inner one looks pretty
- 2:57good.
- 3:08Now that we've trimmed back that inner
- 3:10claw a little bit, we can see that the
- 3:12outer claw or the one closest to us is
- 3:14around 5 in [music] too long.
- 3:31All of that black gunge coming out of
- 3:33her toe lets me know that there is a
- 3:35void inside there and that this foot may
- 3:38be actually a lot worse than it first
- 3:41appears. If that's possible.
- 4:00I'm actually now past the point of where
- 4:02a healthy foot should have started to
- 4:05appear. So, this is indeed not just a
- 4:08case of overgrown feet, but there's a
- 4:10serious problem lurking beneath.
- 4:32Believe it or not, these are the types
- 4:34of feet where you can easily go too far.
- 4:37This foot was colossal when we started,
- 4:40and patience can get the better of you.
- 4:43It's easy to try to speed up knowing
- 4:45that you have a huge amount of hoof horn
- 4:47to take away, but that's when you make
- 4:50mistakes. The inside of this foot does
- 4:53not look like an average foot. The
- 4:55biology or the the the architecture, if
- 4:59you like, of the hoof capsule itself has
- 5:01completely changed. So, I'm constantly
- 5:03analyzing the foot, trying to decide
- 5:06what I think we can take away. I say
- 5:09think very carefully because this is an
- 5:11educated guess. We can't possibly know
- 5:14what is on the inside of this cow's
- 5:17foot. It's deformed and contorted. It's
- 5:20not regular. So, I'm having to reassess
- 5:23it with every slither of hipworm that's
- 5:26being removed.
- 5:40Yeah. Block, please, Craig.
- 5:45>> It looks like this issue in her white
- 5:47line is what she's been avoiding putting
- 5:49weight on. By avoiding putting any
- 5:52weight on the toe, she also avoids
- 5:54wearing any of that hoof horn away,
- 5:56which has resulted in these hugely
- 5:59overgrown feet. So, I'm going to attach
- 6:01a block so that she doesn't have to
- 6:03avoid using that part of her foot. All
- 6:06of her weight will now be put through
- 6:08this wooden block that I'm about to
- 6:10attach. Or at least that's the hope. And
- 6:14in that hope, we should make her more
- 6:16comfortable. She won't have to walk on
- 6:19her heels anymore because this block
- 6:22will be doing the heavy lifting. And
- 6:24hopefully once we trim out the rest of
- 6:26this foot, it can begin to heal.
- 6:30Once I finish this trim and we can let
- 6:32the cow out of the crush, she is going
- 6:34to feel a colossal difference. Imagine
- 6:38how much more comfortable she's going to
- 6:39be walking without this colossal foot
- 6:42hanging off the end of her leg. It's
- 6:45cold here in southwest Scotland right
- 6:47now. And I don't know if you can hear it
- 6:49or not, but I have the sniffles. These
- 6:52cows are going in for the winter. So,
- 6:54this has been a really good opportunity
- 6:56for us to tidy up her foot and make her
- 6:59[music] as comfortable as we possibly
- 7:01can for the winter ahead. Just look at
- 7:04the difference in this foot. We've
- 7:06shaved off around 5 1/2 in from [music]
- 7:09the outer claw and in the process
- 7:11hopefully made her a huge amount more
- 7:14comfortable.
- 7:16[music]
- 7:20In an ideal world, all cows feet would
- 7:22[music] be perfect all of the time. But
- 7:24we don't live in an ideal world. Nature
- 7:27can be harsh. Our land is not perfect
- 7:30for these cows. And that's why we need
- 7:32to intervene like this to do what we
- 7:35[music] can to make sure that these cows
- 7:37live the best and most comfortable life
- 7:39that they possibly can in this beautiful
- 7:42[music] little corner of southwest
- 7:44Scotland, which we absolutely love to
- 7:46call home.
- 7:48And to be honest, I think she's walking
- 7:50fairly well. I'd say this has been a job
- 7:53well done. But I'd love to know what
- 7:56[music] you think. So, please drop a
- 7:58comment below and tell me what you think
- 8:00of this trim. Remember, all of that
- 8:02merch is back in stock, by the way,
- 8:03folks.
