- 0:00Through the bathroom door I could hear
- 0:01everything. Forks on good plates, Uncle
- 0:03Terry's big laugh,
- 0:05Aunt Bonnie telling the same story about
- 0:07her neighbor's hot tub for the third
- 0:09time that night. I washed my hands
- 0:11slowly. I'd been on my feet since 6:00
- 0:13that morning when I put the turkey in
- 0:15its brine and started peeling potatoes
- 0:17for eight adults. This was my first
- 0:19break. Two minutes in a room with a lock
- 0:22staring at a woman in the mirror who
- 0:24looked tired and not very familiar.
- 0:26I reached for the door handle and that's
- 0:28when I heard Ruby.
- 0:30It wasn't a tantrum cry. It wasn't a
- 0:32sleepy cry either. I know every cry my
- 0:34two-year-old has and this was none of
- 0:36them. It was thin and strangled, the
- 0:38sound of a child who can't get air. My
- 0:41stomach dropped through the floor. I
- 0:42don't remember opening the door. I just
- 0:44remember being in the hallway.
- 0:46The dining room was full of warm light.
- 0:49My late grandmother's linen tablecloth
- 0:50was set with 11 dishes, the turkey, the
- 0:53maple-glazed ham, mashed potatoes, green
- 0:55bean casserole, a tourtière I'd made
- 0:57from my mother's recipe, butter tarts
- 1:00cooling on the sideboard, and on the
- 1:01hardwood by the Christmas tree lay my
- 1:03daughter.
- 1:05My mother-in-law Darlene was bent over
- 1:07her with one knee planted in Ruby's back
- 1:09and a hand pressing the side of her head
- 1:11into the floor. Ruby's cheek was turned
- 1:13toward me. It was red and already
- 1:15puffing and I could see the print of
- 1:17four fingers on it. "Girls are nothing
- 1:19but noise and expense." Darlene was
- 1:21saying in a bright tight voice I had
- 1:23never heard from her. "Wailing on
- 1:25Christmas Eve. Somebody has to teach her
- 1:27manners."
- 1:28I stood there for two seconds. I swear
- 1:31it was only two.
- 1:32My husband Cody sat at the head of the
- 1:34table with a glass of red in his hand
- 1:36and the leftover grin from somebody's
- 1:37joke still on his face.
- 1:39Aunt Bonnie was beside him, Uncle Terry,
- 1:42his wife, cousin Logan and his
- 1:43girlfriend, Cody's friend Dylan who
- 1:46dropped by for dessert. Eight adults at
- 1:48a table. Some were laughing. We're
- 1:50staring hard at their plates pretending
- 1:52they were in another room. Not one of
- 1:54them stood up.
- 1:56Saw me. She stretched both arms out
- 1:58crying so hard she couldn't breathe.
- 2:00Mama, Mama.
- 2:01Only then did Darlene let go. She got to
- 2:04her feet and brushed off her knees like
- 2:05she'd knelt in a garden. Oh, Jenna,
- 2:07there you are. She was grabbing at
- 2:09Bonnie's lipstick and wouldn't let go. I
- 2:11said no twice and she started screaming.
- 2:14Honestly, no manners.
- 2:16She walked back to her chair so calmly
- 2:18it frightened me more than the slap had.
- 2:20I crossed the room, dropped to my knees,
- 2:22and picked up my daughter.
- 2:24She wrapped herself around my neck,
- 2:26shaking, snot and tears soaking through
- 2:28my sweater. I touched her cheek with one
- 2:30finger. I could see where each finger
- 2:32had landed.
- 2:33What's going on? Cody finally asked,
- 2:36setting down his glass in the tone of a
- 2:37man asking if it might snow.
- 2:39It's Christmas, Jenna. Mom's
- 2:41disciplining her and you're making that
- 2:42face.
- 2:44I looked at the table. At Darlene, 61
- 2:46years old, retired grade three teacher,
- 2:49who told anyone who'd listen that nobody
- 2:50raised children like she did. At Cody,
- 2:53my husband of four years, who'd promised
- 2:55on our wedding day in front of my
- 2:56parents to protect me and any children
- 2:59we had. At Bonnie, who compared
- 3:01everybody's kids. At Terry and Logan. I
- 3:03knew every face. They were all sitting
- 3:05in my house, eating the meal I'd started
- 3:07at 6:00 in the morning.
- 3:09Did you see your mother hit Ruby?
- 3:11I saw it. He speared a piece of turkey.
- 3:14A kid who won't listen gets corrected.
- 3:15My mom's a teacher. She knows how. You
- 3:18go too easy on her, Jenna. A
- 3:19two-year-old crying over nothing.
- 3:22I didn't let him finish.
- 3:24With Ruby locked against my chest, I
- 3:25walked to the head of the table, took a
- 3:27fistful of my grandmother's linen, and
- 3:29pulled.
- 3:30The noise was enormous. Plates, glasses,
- 3:33platters. The whole spread went at once.
- 3:35The turkey hit the floor and burst.
- 3:37Gravy sprayed the wall. Red wine bled
- 3:39across the white cloth. And the big
- 3:41tureen of chicken noodle soup, four
- 3:43hours on the stove, tipped straight into
- 3:45Cody's lap. He leapt up yelling,
- 3:47dancing, his trousers soaked.
- 3:49The laughter cut off like a dropped
- 3:51phone call. A glass hung in somebody's
- 3:53hand.
- 3:54A fork rang once on the floor.
- 3:56Then there was a silence so complete I
- 3:58could hear soup dripping off the table
- 3:59edge, and Cody panting through his
- 4:01teeth.
- 4:02Are you out of your mind?"
- 4:04"You're out of your mind." Darlene
- 4:06shrieked.
- 4:07I rubbed Ruby's back and looked at them
- 4:09one by one. A two-year-old gets hit in
- 4:11the face and you laugh and drink. So,
- 4:13tell me, who's out of their mind?
- 4:15Logan jabbed a finger at me. "Was all
- 4:17this drama really necessary? It was just
- 4:19a smack."
- 4:21I turned to him. "Want one? I'll only
- 4:23use half of your aunt's strength."
- 4:25He shrank into his chair.
- 4:27Ruby had stopped crying.
- 4:29She had her head on my shoulder and her
- 4:31eyes wide open, looking at the wreckage,
- 4:33then at the aunts and uncles who
- 4:35normally made silly faces at her.
- 4:37She didn't understand any of it. She
- 4:39just knew her mother was holding on to
- 4:41her with everything she had.
- 4:43"Apologize." I said to Darlene one word
- 4:45at a time, to Ruby, for the slap, for
- 4:47calling her an expense, for pinning her
- 4:49to the floor.
- 4:50Her face went from shock to rage to a
- 4:52kind of scandalized disbelief.
- 4:54"Apologize to a two-year-old? I'm her
- 4:56grandmother. I raised my own the same
- 4:58way. Were you never spanked?"
- 5:00"What happened when I was little is
- 5:02between me and my parents." My voice
- 5:04started to shake, not from fear, but
- 5:06from years of swallowing things. "But
- 5:08nobody puts hands on my kids. Nobody
- 5:10holds her face to the floor. And you, of
- 5:12all people, a teacher, you should know
- 5:14better than any of us."
- 5:16"Apologize to my mother." Cody said,
- 5:18wiping soup off his thighs. "Right now.
- 5:21Clean this up and we're done. It's
- 5:22Christmas."
- 5:23"Not a chance."
- 5:25I turned and carried Ruby toward the
- 5:27bedroom.
- 5:28"Where do you think you're going?"
- 5:30"To pack a bag. Ruby and I are sleeping
- 5:32somewhere else tonight."
- 5:34"You wouldn't dare."
- 5:36I stopped and looked at the man I'd
- 5:37loved for seven years. There was anger
- 5:39in his face, embarrassment, the
- 5:41irritation of someone watching a party
- 5:43fall apart. The one thing missing was
- 5:45concern. Not one question about his
- 5:48daughter's face.
- 5:49"Your daughter got hit." I said quietly,
- 5:51"and you were laughing. All of you."
- 5:54Bonnie muttered from her corner, "She's
- 5:56only a child."
- 5:57"Only a child." And I laughed, and it
- 6:00came out ugly. "So, it doesn't matter if
- 6:02she gets hit. Same way it doesn't matter
- 6:04that I've cooked this whole dinner
- 6:05alone, four years running and scrubbed
- 6:08pots until 2:00 in the morning.
- 6:10Darlene planted herself in the bedroom
- 6:12doorway with her arms spread.
- 6:14You're not leaving.
- 6:16You flipped Christmas dinner on its head
- 6:17and you think you're the injured party?
- 6:19You clean this up or you don't walk
- 6:21through this door.
- 6:23Mrs. Ruby flinched against me.
- 6:25I studied my mother-in-law's face, all
- 6:27twisted up, and the room of people I'd
- 6:29been calling family, and something in me
- 6:31went quiet and cold.
- 6:33I said, "I'll clean it up."
- 6:35I saw the whole room relax. Finally, the
- 6:38look said, "She's being reasonable."
- 6:39Even Cody.
- 6:41I walked to the front hall with Ruby on
- 6:42my hip, took my coat and purse from the
- 6:44hook, pulled out my phone, and dialed
- 6:46three numbers.
- 6:48911, what's your emergency?
- 6:50I need to report an assault on a
- 6:522-year-old child. It's happening at my
- 6:54home right now. I gave the address in a
- 6:56steady voice. Nobody in that room
- 6:58breathed.
- 6:59When I hung up, Darlene's face had
- 7:01turned the color of paper. Cody's had
- 7:03gone ash. Logan, Terry, Bonnie, they all
- 7:05looked green.
- 7:06Ruby whispered in my ear, "Are the
- 7:08police coming?"
- 7:10I kissed her swollen cheek. "They're
- 7:12coming to keep you safe." Then I looked
- 7:14at the room. Now Christmas Eve really
- 7:16starts.
- 7:17Darlene lunged for my phone. "Families
- 7:19don't air their dirty laundry. Call back
- 7:21and say it was a mistake."
- 7:23I stepped away. "Ruby getting slapped is
- 7:26dirty laundry? Then let the police come
- 7:28and see how it gets washed."
- 7:30"What will the neighbors think?" A
- 7:31cruiser outside on Christmas Eve.
- 7:34Cody came at me, too, jaw tight. "Cancel
- 7:36it. We'll sort this out as a family."
- 7:39"When Ruby was on the floor, where was
- 7:41the family? When everyone was laughing,
- 7:43who thought of sorting it out then?"
- 7:45Bonnie huffed. "Jenna, you're making a
- 7:47scene."
- 7:49I tilted Ruby's face toward the room so
- 7:50every one of them had to look. "Come
- 7:52here, Bonnie, and I'll give you one just
- 7:54like it. See how it feels."
- 7:57She swallowed and looked at the carpet.
- 7:59Uncle Terry sighed.
- 8:01"Honey, your mother-in-law might have
- 8:02been rough, but did you have to flip the
- 8:04table and call all cops?"
- 8:06"If it were your granddaughter, Terry,
- 8:08would you be sitting there saying we're
- 8:10all family?
- 8:11He had nothing.
- 8:13From the corner, Logan grumbled, not
- 8:15quietly enough, would she have hit a
- 8:17boy?
- 8:18Just hung there. Everyone heard it.
- 8:21I watched Darlene's chin come up, shame
- 8:22flickering over it for half off a second
- 8:24before she buried it. Girls need raising
- 8:27right, she said, or nobody will want
- 8:29them.
- 8:30The doorbell rang.
- 8:32Cody dropped his voice to a hiss. Jenna,
- 8:34last chance, open it and say it was
- 8:36nothing.
- 8:37I didn't move. It rang again, then a
- 8:39firm knock, police.
- 8:41Mama, don't be scared, Ruby said into my
- 8:43neck. The police are nice.
- 8:45I opened the door. Two officers, a woman
- 8:47and a man, both young. They took in the
- 8:49soup-streaked floor, the ruined turkey,
- 8:51the pale faces, and the child on my hip.
- 8:54Did you call us, ma'am?
- 8:56Jenna Ferguson. This is my daughter,
- 8:58Ruby. She's two.
- 9:00Half an hour ago, my mother-in-law
- 9:01pinned her to the floor and slapped her
- 9:02face. My husband and everyone in this
- 9:05room watched. Nobody stepped in.
- 9:07The female officer crouched.
- 9:09Hi, sweetheart. Can I see your cheek?
- 9:11Ruby hesitated, then turned her head
- 9:13slowly. The officer's mouth tightened.
- 9:15She stood. Who's the grandmother?
- 9:18Straightened her blouse. I am. It's a
- 9:21misunderstanding. I gave her a little
- 9:22discipline. My daughter-in-law makes a
- 9:24drama out of everything.
- 9:27This is what you get from a little
- 9:28discipline.
- 9:29If a grandmother can't correct her own
- 9:31granddaughter, what good is she? My son
- 9:34was strapped plenty, and he turned out
- 9:35fine.
- 9:36The male officer said, flat, "Striking a
- 9:39child's face is assault under the
- 9:41criminal code. There's no exception for
- 9:43grandparents, and the so-called
- 9:45reasonable correction defense doesn't
- 9:47cover blows to the head. The Supreme
- 9:49Court settled that years ago."
- 9:51Darlene reached for a chair back. Cody
- 9:53was there to steady her. "Officers, it's
- 9:55a misunderstanding. She lost patience.
- 9:58It's Christmas. Can't we handle it as a
- 9:59family?"
- 10:01"And you, sir?" the woman said. "While
- 10:03your daughter was being hit, where were
- 10:04you?"
- 10:05Opened. Nothing came.
- 10:08"He was at the head of the table with a
- 10:09glass of wine," I said, watching.
- 10:12She turned to the rest of them. "Did
- 10:14anyone here see it?"
- 10:15Eyes slid away. Bonnie forced a smile.
- 10:17"Not clearly."
- 10:19"You were sitting beside her, Bonnie." I
- 10:21laughed. "The neighbors next door heard
- 10:23Ruby scream."
- 10:25"That's enough, Jenna," she growled.
- 10:27"We'll take statements separately," the
- 10:29male officer said. "Ma'am, is there a
- 10:31quiet room?"
- 10:32I led them to the spare room I used as
- 10:34an office. Before I closed the door, I
- 10:36looked back. Darlene had sunk into a
- 10:38chair gray. Cody stood over her with his
- 10:40fists clenched, and under the anger,
- 10:42something I'd never seen on him, fear.
- 10:45In the office, the female officer sat
- 10:47Ruby on my knee. "Ruby, can you tell me
- 10:49what happened?"
- 10:50Ruby looked at me. "It's okay, baby.
- 10:52She's a nice lady."
- 10:54"I wanted Auntie's lipstick," she
- 10:55whispered. "Grandma took it. Grandma hit
- 10:57me." She pointed at her cheek, and her
- 10:59lips started to wobble again.
- 11:02Officer photographed the mark and wrote
- 11:03everything down.
- 11:05"Get her to the children's hospital
- 11:06tonight or first thing tomorrow, so
- 11:08there's a medical record."
- 11:10She asked about my husband, and I told
- 11:12her. I told her about the word expense,
- 11:15and about how Darlene had said since the
- 11:16day I got pregnant that she wanted a
- 11:18grandson.
- 11:19The two officers exchanged a look and
- 11:21kept writing.
- 11:23"And you pulled the tablecloth," the man
- 11:24said.
- 11:26"I did. I'll pay for the damage, but I
- 11:27won't say I was wrong."
- 11:29"Next time, try to hold on to your
- 11:31temper," the woman said, not unkindly.
- 11:33"But you did the right thing calling us.
- 11:35People think what happens inside a home
- 11:37stays inside. That's how it keeps
- 11:39happening."
- 11:40When we came back out, she stood in
- 11:42front of Darlene. "Mrs. Ferguson, we
- 11:44need to speak with you alone."
- 11:46I gripped Cody's arm. "I'm not going.
- 11:48Cody, tell them. My heart isn't good."
- 11:51"Please cooperate, sir," the officer
- 11:53told him, "or we'll do this the formal
- 11:54way."
- 11:56Was gone for 20 minutes. The living room
- 11:58was suffocating. The relatives looked at
- 12:00me, and I read every look, accusation,
- 12:03disbelief, and underneath it, a nervous
- 12:05sort of respect.
- 12:06Nobody had expected it from quiet Jenna,
- 12:09who cooked the Christmas dinner every
- 12:10year and never raised her voice.
- 12:13Cody leaned in and spoke low, "Are you
- 12:15happy police in my mother's face on
- 12:17Christmas Eve? Where am I supposed to
- 12:19show my face?"
- 12:20I almost laughed. "Where was your face
- 12:22when she hit your daughter? Where was it
- 12:24when she called her a burden? Now you
- 12:26remember you have one."
- 12:28I'd been drinking. I didn't react in
- 12:30time.
- 12:31"It was 2 minutes, Cody. 2 minutes from
- 12:33the first scream to when I got to that
- 12:35room. You had a hundred ways to stop it
- 12:38and you sat there."
- 12:39My voice cracked.
- 12:41Not from fear, but from everything
- 12:42stacked behind it. "She's your daughter.
- 12:45She runs to the door when you get home.
- 12:47She puts her hand on your forehead when
- 12:48you're sick."
- 12:50He had no answer.
- 12:51The door opened. Darlene came out, eyes
- 12:54red behind the officers.
- 12:56"She's admitted the contact," the male
- 12:58officer said, "though she calls it
- 13:00discipline. With the visible injury and
- 13:02this many witnesses, she's being charged
- 13:04with assault. She'll be released on an
- 13:06undertaking with conditions and given a
- 13:08court date. We're also notifying the
- 13:10Children's Aid Society."
- 13:12Darlene let out a breath, relieved they
- 13:14hadn't cuffed her, but she was white as
- 13:16chalk.
- 13:17"One of the conditions," the female
- 13:18officer added, "is that she not be in
- 13:21contact with Ruby, and she can't remain
- 13:23in the home tonight."
- 13:24Head snapped up. "Not remain? This is my
- 13:27son's house."
- 13:28"It's the family's house," the officer
- 13:30said, "and the child lives here. Do you
- 13:32have somewhere to stay?"
- 13:34I held up a hand. "It's my house, too.
- 13:36My name's on the title beside Cody's and
- 13:38my parents paid half the down payment.
- 13:41It's the answer to what someone asked
- 13:43earlier. If somebody has to leave
- 13:45tonight, it won't be my daughter."
- 13:47Face worked. "Mom can stay at Bonnie's."
- 13:50Darlene hissed. "Bonnie's? And you,
- 13:52Jenna, you're a disgrace. I said so from
- 13:54the day you came into this family."
- 13:56"Darlene, if you raise your voice at me
- 13:58again or touch Ruby, I'll ask for a
- 14:01restraining order and you won't see her
- 14:03for the rest of her life."
- 14:04The sentence caught in her throat.
- 14:07I took Ruby into the bedroom and locked
- 14:08the door. Only then did my legs begin to
- 14:10tremble. Ruby's head was on my shoulder.
- 14:13"Mama, I'm hungry."
- 14:15It was past 8:00 and her dinner was on
- 14:17the floor. I gave her a cup of milk and
- 14:19a cookie from the bedroom mini fridge
- 14:21where I keep snacks and watched the
- 14:23swelling under the lamp.
- 14:25"Why did Grandma hit me?"
- 14:27"Because Grandma did something wrong.
- 14:29Hitting is always wrong. If anyone does
- 14:31it, you tell Mama."
- 14:33She nodded, not really understanding.
- 14:35"Why didn't Daddy help me?"
- 14:37Threw me like a blade. I had no answer.
- 14:40Outside the door, voices rose and fell.
- 14:42Cody and his mother whispering. Then
- 14:44coats, cars, quiet.
- 14:46At 11:00 Cody let himself in with the
- 14:47spare key. He looked at Ruby asleep,
- 14:50then at me. "Jenna, let's talk like
- 14:51adults.
- 14:53First answer one thing. When you saw
- 14:55your daughter being hit, what did you
- 14:57think?"
- 14:58I'd been drinking. My mother's older. I
- 15:00couldn't argue with her in front of
- 15:01everyone.
- 15:03"A 2-year-old on the floor and you were
- 15:05worried about a scene."
- 15:06"Her intention was to teach her."
- 15:09"Teach her what? To be afraid?" I stood
- 15:11up. "Pack a bag for yourself, Cody, or I
- 15:13take Ruby tonight. You decide. Either
- 15:15you're her father or you're your
- 15:16mother's son."
- 15:18He stood in the doorway a long time. At
- 15:20last he said quietly, "Let me sleep on
- 15:22it."
- 15:23"You've slept on it for 4 years."
- 15:25I packed anyway. I took Ruby and drove
- 15:27to a motel off the highway because I
- 15:29didn't trust that house for one more
- 15:31night. Cody followed in his own car, sat
- 15:33in the parking lot for an hour, then
- 15:35knocked. Not to argue, just to say he'd
- 15:37come. I let him have the second bed. I
- 15:40did not forgive him.
- 15:41At 3:00 in the morning, Ruby woke up
- 15:43crying. "Mama, it hurts."
- 15:45The mark had darkened to purple at the
- 15:47edges. I dressed her and we were at
- 15:48McMaster Children's Hospital by 4:00.
- 15:51The doctor, a woman in her 30s, looked
- 15:53at Cody once and said, "And you were
- 15:55there?" He said nothing. She ordered a
- 15:57scan to rule out head injury. It came
- 16:00back clear, thank God, but she told me
- 16:02to watch for vomiting or unusual
- 16:03sleepiness. "The hospital will flag this
- 16:06to child protection," she said. "That's
- 16:08routine. We'll send the report to the
- 16:10police if they ask."
- 16:12Noon, my phone rang. Mom cheerful.
- 16:14"Merry Christmas, honey. We tried you
- 16:15last night."
- 16:17I told her. She didn't say a word for so
- 16:19long I thought the call had dropped.
- 16:21Where are you?
- 16:23The hospital. She's okay, mostly.
- 16:26Your father and I are getting in the
- 16:27car.
- 16:28Mom, it's an hour and a half.
- 16:30Send me the address.
- 16:32They arrived in 90 minutes flat. Mom
- 16:34dropped to her knees in front of Ruby
- 16:36and cried without a sound. Dad, Larry
- 16:38Mitchell, 40 years a high school shop
- 16:40teacher, a quiet, gentle man, looked at
- 16:43Ruby's face, then at Cody, and said in a
- 16:45very calm voice, "Where's your mother?"
- 16:48At Bonnie's, but Larry, let's wait.
- 16:51Now.
- 16:52I wanted to stop them. Mom held my arm.
- 16:54This one is theirs to say, "Love, you
- 16:56stay with Ruby."
- 16:57They drove off with Cody in the backseat
- 16:59of Dad's truck.
- 17:01Cody told me about it afterward many
- 17:02times, so I know how it went.
- 17:05Living room smelled of potpourri.
- 17:07Darlene sat on the sofa in her cardigan,
- 17:09pearls at her throat, chin up. When she
- 17:11saw my father, she tried to laugh.
- 17:13"Larry, I suppose you've come to scold
- 17:15me."
- 17:16"I've come to ask what a 2-year-old did
- 17:18to deserve that."
- 17:19"She screamed over a lipstick."
- 17:22"And you put her on the floor."
- 17:24"She's my granddaughter."
- 17:26"You taught 30 years. Tell me which
- 17:28teaching theory allows you to put a
- 17:30student on the floor and strike her
- 17:32face."
- 17:33"She's not a student."
- 17:35"She's a baby. And I notice you never
- 17:37did it in a classroom. You did it at
- 17:39home with your son watching because you
- 17:41knew he wouldn't stop you."
- 17:43Cody said that sentence hit him harder
- 17:45than anything. His face burned.
- 17:48Took out his phone and showed her Ruby's
- 17:49cheek. "Is this a smack?" Then, evenly,
- 17:52"My daughter paid 30,000 of that down
- 17:54payment. She's earned as much as your
- 17:56son for 4 years. She cooked your
- 17:58Christmas dinner alone, and you called
- 18:00her granddaughter an expense. You owe
- 18:02Ruby an apology, not me. Ruby."
- 18:05"To a toddler?" Darlene stood. "I
- 18:08won't."
- 18:09"There's the other matter." He turned to
- 18:11Cody. "You have to choose, your mother
- 18:13or your wife and daughter. I'm not
- 18:15leaving without hearing it."
- 18:17Came out of the kitchen, wringing a dish
- 18:19towel.
- 18:20Nobody looked at her.
- 18:22Darlene grabbed Cody's arm. Your
- 18:23father's gone. I have only you. If you
- 18:26pick that woman, I'm dead to you.
- 18:28Cody told me he looked at his mother's
- 18:29wet face and in his head saw only Ruby
- 18:32saying mama with her arms out and then
- 18:34Ruby saying daddy the night before in
- 18:36the motel so softly he almost didn't
- 18:38hear it.
- 18:39He said, his voice shook, you shouldn't
- 18:42have hit her.
- 18:43She stared.
- 18:45She's two. You held her face on the
- 18:46floor. You called her an expense and I
- 18:48sat there. I'm the one who's ashamed
- 18:50because I sat there. He started to cry.
- 18:53I'm choosing my family. I'll visit. I'll
- 18:55help you. But if you ever touch her
- 18:57again or insult her, you won't see any
- 18:59of us.
- 19:00For that girl, you leave your mother?
- 19:02That girl is called Ruby, he shouted for
- 19:04the first time in his life at her. She's
- 19:07mine and Jenna's.
- 19:08He walked out with my father. That's the
- 19:10part I believe least and it's the part
- 19:12that was true.
- 19:14That night in our own kitchen, Cody told
- 19:16me he was sorry and it wasn't the first
- 19:18apology and it wouldn't be the last.
- 19:20I told him what I'd been thinking since
- 19:21the motel.
- 19:23I'm not forgiving you tonight. An
- 19:25apology doesn't undo the two minutes.
- 19:27You earn it back a bit at a time or you
- 19:29don't.
- 19:30How do I earn it?
- 19:32You stop sending your mother the $300 a
- 19:34month. She's got her teacher's pension
- 19:36and a paid off house.
- 19:38You keep her out of this house and out
- 19:39of our lives. You tell your family the
- 19:41truth. And you start seeing someone, a
- 19:44counselor, about why you froze.
- 19:46He didn't argue. He canceled the
- 19:48e-transfer that night. The next week he
- 19:50booked his first session.
- 19:52Darlene didn't take it quietly.
- 19:55She called 40 times a day. She turned up
- 19:57at his office. When that didn't work,
- 19:59she started on me. Texts from unknown
- 20:01numbers saying Ruby wasn't Cody's.
- 20:03Comments on my company's LinkedIn page
- 20:05tagging my co-workers calling me a gold
- 20:07digger who stole her son. My manager, a
- 20:09sharp woman named Miz, called me in and
- 20:12said gently, we've deleted them. We know
- 20:14what this is, but you should be ready.
- 20:17I said, I'm working with a lawyer.
- 20:20I had one by then, Miz Weaver, a family
- 20:22lawyer with a way of listening that made
- 20:24you feel the room had gotten smaller. We
- 20:26screenshotted everything. She sent a
- 20:28cease and desist and told me the
- 20:30harassment could add a second charge.
- 20:32She was right.
- 20:33Darlene ignored the letter and posted
- 20:35again. Police added a charge of criminal
- 20:37harassment.
- 20:39At the first court date, Darlene arrived
- 20:41in her navy suit with her hair set and
- 20:43her pearls on alone. Aunt Bonnie, Uncle
- 20:45Terry, and Logan sat on my side of the
- 20:47aisle. They hadn't been asked to, they
- 20:49just came. Logan couldn't meet my eye.
- 20:52He apologized in the hallway. "We should
- 20:54have stopped her. I should have." I told
- 20:56him I'd heard it and that I'd decide
- 20:58later what to do with it.
- 20:59Darlene's lawyer advised her to plead.
- 21:01The Crown had Ruby's photos, the
- 21:03hospital report, the officer's notes,
- 21:05and four relatives who now agreed to
- 21:07testify. She pleaded guilty to assault
- 21:10on a child and to criminal harassment.
- 21:12At sentencing, the judge looked at her
- 21:14over his glasses. "Mrs. Ferguson, you
- 21:17were a teacher. You of all people know
- 21:19that a child's face is not a place where
- 21:21discipline lands. I have read your
- 21:22statement. It speaks of your pain. It
- 21:25doesn't speak of Ruby's."
- 21:27Darlene said nothing.
- 21:28"18 months probation. No contact with
- 21:31the child except as a family court may
- 21:33later allow, supervised. No contact with
- 21:35Ms. Ferguson. A mandatory anger
- 21:38management program. 200 hours of
- 21:40community service. A conviction will be
- 21:43on your record, which will affect your
- 21:44vulnerable sector screening."
- 21:46I watched what that sentence cost her.
- 21:49For 9 years she had read aloud every
- 21:50Tuesday at the local school's volunteer
- 21:53reading program and sat on the library
- 21:55board. She'd loved those Tuesdays more
- 21:57than she loved most people.
- 21:59The letter from the school came the next
- 22:01week. Her clearance had been revoked.
- 22:03Told me Darlene sat in the front hall
- 22:05holding the letter for an hour.
- 22:07Outside the courthouse it was raining.
- 22:09Darlene came down the steps with no
- 22:10umbrella, hair flattened, suit soaked,
- 22:13smaller than I'd ever seen her. She
- 22:15stopped in front of Cody.
- 22:17"Is this what you wanted?"
- 22:19"No, Mom," he said hoarse. "I wanted you
- 22:21to say sorry to a 2-year-old and you
- 22:23wouldn't."
- 22:24She looked at me. "You think you've won.
- 22:27I think my daughter's safe.
- 22:29She turned and walked into the rain and
- 22:30Cody started after her. I held his
- 22:32sleeve. Let her go.
- 22:34He nodded.
- 22:36That was the part everybody online asked
- 22:38me about later.
- 22:39Whether I should have taken him back.
- 22:41Whether a man who sits there laughing
- 22:42will do it again. They're right to ask.
- 22:45I didn't take him back that day.
- 22:47I made him live in the basement for 5
- 22:49months. He went to counseling every
- 22:51week. He told his side of the family in
- 22:53writing that anyone who made excuses for
- 22:55his mother would hear nothing from him.
- 22:57He sat through the Children's Aid home
- 22:59visits and answered every question
- 23:01without once saying, "It was just a
- 23:02smack."
- 23:04He cooked. He did bedtime. He cleaned
- 23:06the pots at 2:00 in the morning once on
- 23:08Easter and I found him asleep on the
- 23:10counter in the morning.
- 23:12At Ruby's third birthday, she asked him
- 23:14to push her on the swing.
- 23:16He pushed her for 40 minutes. I watched
- 23:18from the porch and when she came running
- 23:20to me laughing, her cheeks smooth and
- 23:22clear, I knew the thing I'd been afraid
- 23:25to know that she would remember none of
- 23:26that night and that I would remember all
- 23:29of it.
- 23:30The following Christmas we kept it
- 23:31small. My parents came. Cody cooked the
- 23:34turkey.
- 23:35He set the table with my grandmother's
- 23:36tablecloth, which I'd washed seven times
- 23:39to get the wine out and it had come back
- 23:41almost white with one pale stain near
- 23:43the corner I decided to keep.
- 23:45Halfway through dinner, Ruby looked up
- 23:47from her mashed potatoes and said,
- 23:49"Mama, where's Grandma Darlene?"
- 23:51Fork stopped. I took Ruby's hand across
- 23:54the table.
- 23:55Grandma made a very bad choice,
- 23:56sweetheart, and now she has to live with
- 23:58it.
- 23:59She thought about that, chewing. "Okay,"
- 24:01she said, "can I have a butter tart?"
- 24:04Cody laughed and it cracked in the
- 24:05middle and I laughed, too.
- 24:08Nobody at that table sat still while a
- 24:09child got hurt and nobody ever would
- 24:11again. I made sure of it.
