  4. 0:07uh a misogynistic trans-phobic
  5. 0:12friend of mine his name is matt walsh he
  6. 0:14is the erstwhile number one best-selling
  7. 0:17lgbt author in the united states author
  8. 0:20of johnny the walrus a really tremendous
  9. 0:23children's book and most recently the
  10. 0:26star
  11. 0:27of an episode
  12. 0:28of dr phil matt thanks for coming on
  13. 0:31thank you thank you for that
  14. 0:31introduction i really appreciate it
  15. 0:33anytime accurate
  16. 0:35so
  17. 0:36matt you just
  18. 0:38for the handful of people who had not
  19. 0:39heard of you in the country they just
  20. 0:41heard of you because you went viral
  21. 0:43after being invited onto the dr phil
  22. 0:45daytime talk show where you were brought
  23. 0:48on to defend the view that men can't
  24. 0:49become women and you were debating this
  25. 0:52position
  26. 0:53with
  27. 0:54a a very
  28. 0:56sexually ambiguous person who looked
  29. 0:58somewhat like a woman but also had a
  30. 1:01beard and it was extraordinarily
  31. 1:03confusing
  32. 1:05yeah yeah it was uh it was i was on
  33. 1:07there with two there were diversity
  34. 1:09consultants and one was uh i believe
  35. 1:11one's trans one identifies as non-binary
  36. 1:14one's a was a man who who kind of
  37. 1:15presents as a woman the other was a you
  38. 1:17know female who presents as a man uh and
  39. 1:19i think they were also romantic couples
  40. 1:21as well but nothing nothing that matters
  41. 1:23and i'm also there was also a professor
  42. 1:25um kind of a woke professor there as
  43. 1:27well and i think she's a communications
  44. 1:29professor and for some reason she was
  45. 1:30brought on to talk about gender
  46. 1:32and as along with the entire studio
  47. 1:34audience and the interesting thing of
  48. 1:35course so i'm kind of outnumbered on the
  49. 1:37stage for most of the for most of the
  50. 1:38discussion yeah then they brought a
  51. 1:40couple other sane people up towards the
  52. 1:41end
  53. 1:42um and people have asked people are you
  54. 1:44you know nervous going into that
  55. 1:46environment knowing you're gonna be
  56. 1:47outnumbered you're in front of a hostile
  57. 1:48audience and the thing is if this was
  58. 1:50any kind of complicated subject that
  59. 1:53required me to be intelligent
  60. 1:55and uh well-spoken i i would have
  61. 1:57absolutely been nervous i probably would
  62. 1:58have said no but if my position is
  63. 2:00simply that um individuals with penises
  64. 2:03are men like that's that's my and if you
  65. 2:05can give birth you're a woman then yeah
  66. 2:07there's nothing to be afraid of you
  67. 2:08could walk in front of any audience
  68. 2:09doesn't matter at all because your
  69. 2:11position is very very simple and of
  70. 2:13course what we know and if you watch the
  71. 2:14episode what you see as i'm trying to do
  72. 2:16is um
  73. 2:17because you have the you have simplicity
  74. 2:18on your side because the truth is simple
  75. 2:20here and so they're going to try to
  76. 2:21constantly
  77. 2:22they can't engage with you so they're
  78. 2:24going to try to pull you into the weeds
  79. 2:26and make everything seem really obscure
  80. 2:28and uh and and complicated you just
  81. 2:30don't understand right exactly and so
  82. 2:33all you have to do and unfortunately i
  83. 2:35see people on the right get sucked into
  84. 2:36that all the time
  85. 2:38but just you you just stay on the firm
  86. 2:40ground of what is the simple truth of
  87. 2:42the matter and don't leave from there
  88. 2:43let let them equivocate and um hang
  89. 2:46around in the weeds you just stay stay
  90. 2:48on your firm ground of truth and i think
  91. 2:49it all works out one real takeaway i had
  92. 2:52from your appearance on dr phil
  93. 2:55which you know i haven't watched a ton
  94. 2:57of daytime tv in recent years so i
  95. 2:59really think you brought that to a whole
  96. 3:01new audience
  97. 3:02besides just understanding that you were
  98. 3:04right and these looney tunes on the
  99. 3:07other side were extremely mistaken it
  100. 3:10actually
  101. 3:11made me question
  102. 3:13the value of dialogue with with the
  103. 3:16people who share basically no premises
  104. 3:18with you they're completely on the other
  105. 3:20side we're always told that it's so
  106. 3:22important that we speak to people who
  107. 3:24have totally opposing views to us but
  108. 3:28is that important is there anything
  109. 3:30fruitful that is going to come out of
  110. 3:32talking to someone who just simply
  111. 3:35doesn't share any first principles
  112. 3:38so you're saying when you hear me speak
  113. 3:39it makes you question the value of
  114. 3:40dialogue at all
  115. 3:41that's that's how effective it's a
  116. 3:43compliment somehow
  117. 3:46um yeah i i
  118. 3:48during that episode i i'm not sure how
  119. 3:49much of it made it into in ontario but
  120. 3:52uh towards the end dr phil himself was
  121. 3:54talking about i thought he was very fair
  122. 3:55by the way in the way that he uh kind of
  123. 3:57navigated this and refereed it but
  124. 3:58towards the end he was he was trying to
  125. 4:00find some sort of positive takeaway from
  126. 4:02all this and so he was talking about how
  127. 4:04hey like there's a value of conversation
  128. 4:06we've had a conversation here and uh so
  129. 4:08this only shows that we could keep
  130. 4:09talking about this issue and all of that
  131. 4:11but you know i'm thinking the exact same
  132. 4:13thing as you is if anything this is
  133. 4:14proven that you can't talk to these
  134. 4:16people but
  135. 4:18there there's still value in the
  136. 4:19conversation because i the way that i
  137. 4:21look at it uh when i'm talking about
  138. 4:24this issue or talking to someone in
  139. 4:26front of an audience this is really for
  140. 4:28the audience because there are a lot of
  141. 4:29people yeah someone someone who's
  142. 4:32totally fallen into gender ideology
  143. 4:35you're not going to be able to retrieve
  144. 4:36them from it through one conversation
  145. 4:38and so as far as that conversation goes
  146. 4:40they're kind of hopeless unfortunately
  147. 4:42but there are a lot of just normal sane
  148. 4:44people out there
  149. 4:46who understand
  150. 4:48how crazy this is but but they've
  151. 4:50they've been conditioned they live in an
  152. 4:51environment where this is shoved down
  153. 4:53their throat every second of the day
  154. 4:55maybe after a while they start to
  155. 4:56question their own sanity and they start
  156. 4:58to think well i don't know i mean i i
  157. 5:00think that only women can give birth but
  158. 5:02everyone is shouting at me that it's
  159. 5:04different so maybe they're right and
  160. 5:06then for them i think there are a lot of
  161. 5:07people that are sort of on the cusp of
  162. 5:09of of buying into this
  163. 5:11and they can be rescued all they need to
  164. 5:12hear is some normal person saying no no
  165. 5:15you're you're right about what you
  166. 5:16thought to begin with and what everybody
  167. 5:18thought up until 15 seconds ago you're
  168. 5:20right about that it's okay to have that
  169. 5:22viewpoint and let me show you how right
  170. 5:24you are i think i think that's where the
  171. 5:26um where the value comes in so the point
  172. 5:28of the dialogue is not the
  173. 5:30looney tune that you're talking to very
  174. 5:33often but it's it's the spectators
  175. 5:35it's how there are two different kinds
  176. 5:37of debate there's debate when you go sit
  177. 5:39with someone over a cigar late at night
  178. 5:42private environment and you try to
  179. 5:43persuade one another of what you think
  180. 5:46and if you share at least certain basic
  181. 5:48premises maybe you'll succeed in that
  182. 5:50and then there's public debate which is
  183. 5:52you're just trying to clobber the other
  184. 5:53guy you're trying to say that guy's
  185. 5:54wrong my view is right and it's up to
  186. 5:56the audience to decide i think that's a
  187. 5:58good point obviously
  188. 6:00we need to persuade people and so we
  189. 6:03need to present our views they need to
  190. 6:04get a hearing in public
  191. 6:06but it is amazing because
  192. 6:08though we live in this world now where
  193. 6:11everything has to be empirical and based
  194. 6:14on some study and we have to have the
  195. 6:17evidence for every single thing
  196. 6:19a lot of our public debates
  197. 6:21boil down to
  198. 6:23first principles if i think that
  199. 6:26human beings are just
  200. 6:28walking meat puppets just bags of
  201. 6:30chemicals where everything that we hope
  202. 6:33for and love and and feel joy over it's
  203. 6:36really just an illusion caused by
  204. 6:38synapses just squirting out chemicals
  205. 6:40and when we die we turn to worm food and
  206. 6:42take a dirt nap that i'm going to have a
  207. 6:44very different understanding of the
  208. 6:46world than someone who thinks that man
  209. 6:48is made in the image and likeness of god
  210. 6:50and
  211. 6:51how do you convince how do you convince
  212. 6:53someone to go over to the other side
  213. 6:55yeah it's true although the interesting
  214. 6:56thing is that even if you you you start
  215. 6:59from that first premise of that we're
  216. 7:00all meat puppets and biological machines
  217. 7:02and so on i mean even from that premise
  218. 7:06you still can't really get to
  219. 7:07transgenderism so uh that's that's what
  220. 7:09makes it so interesting that's one of
  221. 7:11the reasons why
  222. 7:12um i was maybe a little bit surprised
  223. 7:14and look at the reaction of the dr phil
  224. 7:16episode it was it's been overwhelmingly
  225. 7:19positive i mean overwhelming you can
  226. 7:21even go to um
  227. 7:22dr phil's youtube page and you can look
  228. 7:24at the clips that he posted and just
  229. 7:26read some of the comments and that's not
  230. 7:28always a scientific way of determining
  231. 7:29public opinion but it can be revealing
  232. 7:31and it's just overwhelmingly um on the
  233. 7:34side of sanity here what that tells me
  234. 7:36is that like most people understand how
  235. 7:38crazy this is and in a way people are
  236. 7:40sort of i guess you have to give people
  237. 7:42permission to be sane you know in this
  238. 7:43environment and that's that's one thing
  239. 7:45that we can do um that's important but
  240. 7:47then it's also frustrating because i
  241. 7:49know there's some conservatives that
  242. 7:50take solace in this idea of the silent
  243. 7:52majority but um it's also frustrating in
  244. 7:54a way because well if we're the majority
  245. 7:55why are we silent and if if 90 of people
  246. 7:58or 99 know how crazy this is which i
  247. 8:01think they do
  248. 8:02then why why have we allowed any of this
  249. 8:04to happen i mean why is it that you can
  250. 8:06go anywhere in the country and there are
  251. 8:07men competing against women in women's
  252. 8:09sports and men in the women's room
  253. 8:10restroom and all that kind of stuff
  254. 8:12um it shows the the power that we have
  255. 8:14and it also shows that this other side
  256. 8:17um
  257. 8:18breaks down
  258. 8:20in an instant all you have to do is just
  259. 8:22turn and face it and ask one simple
  260. 8:24question and it breaks down
  261. 8:26um and yet to this point we really
  262. 8:29haven't done that and that's the
  263. 8:30frustrating part you know people need
  264. 8:33people need some limits
  265. 8:36this when i watch you talking to
  266. 8:38gender ambiguous people and you don't
  267. 8:41know if it's a man or a woman and it
  268. 8:43seems to me that self-expression has
  269. 8:46gone a little bit
  270. 8:47too far and and
  271. 8:50i saw this the other day i'd love for
  272. 8:52you to weigh in since you are a
  273. 8:54self-described theocratic fascist
  274. 8:57there's a town up in alaska canai alaska
  275. 9:00and at their assembly meeting in this
  276. 9:03town
  277. 9:04they have an individual will come up and
  278. 9:05and present an invocation this is just
  279. 9:07part of the way the assembly operates
  280. 9:09and anyone can go do it so you know you
  281. 9:11get a presbyterian goes up there gives
  282. 9:13an invocation or a catholic or a
  283. 9:15methodist or
  284. 9:16so
  285. 9:17recently they had a satanist go up and
  286. 9:20give a satanic invocation
  287. 9:24i am told
  288. 9:25by the liberals and by some
  289. 9:28people on the right even
  290. 9:30that this is
  291. 9:31this is the meaning of religious liberty
  292. 9:33if we matt if you and i want religious
  293. 9:35liberty in this country then we need to
  294. 9:38allow some of our representatives to
  295. 9:40publicly worship satan in government
  296. 9:42buildings is that
  297. 9:43have they missed something
  298. 9:45yeah i think they have that's reminds me
  299. 9:46of that i think what was the school
  300. 9:48system somewhere last week or two weeks
  301. 9:49ago that had an after-school satan club
  302. 9:52and so it's kind of along those lines
  303. 9:55and that's why i know you you have been
  304. 9:56as well uh i'm critical of what you hear
  305. 9:59even on the right about um
  306. 10:01well we just what we really want is uh
  307. 10:03open dialogue and we want we want
  308. 10:05alternative viewpoints to be to be
  309. 10:06allowed and yeah um you know this is all
  310. 10:08about openness and everything and even
  311. 10:09when when these people on the right are
  312. 10:11complaining about
  313. 10:13conservative views being
  314. 10:15banned from campuses they always frame
  315. 10:17their complaint as one of wanting just
  316. 10:20openness and free expression academic
  317. 10:22freedom right right and but that's
  318. 10:23that's not really the problem the
  319. 10:25problem is is that it's not that it's
  320. 10:27not that uh freedom is being banned from
  321. 10:29camp it's that truth so this is we're
  322. 10:31seeing we're seeing truth being edged
  323. 10:33out of education education has to be
  324. 10:35grounded in truth or otherwise it's not
  325. 10:37education at all and so i think that's
  326. 10:39the way we need to start talking about
  327. 10:40it you know what is true this guy he's
  328. 10:42saying that men are not women he's
  329. 10:44saying satan should not be uh hailed and
  330. 10:47worshipped in our government you you
  331. 10:48really you're everything they say about
  332. 10:50you matt a theocratic fascist a monster
  333. 10:52but thank you at least for clarifying
  334. 10:55the positions and this is a fruitful
  335. 10:57dialogue others maybe not so much matt
  336. 10:59walsh go check out the matt walsh show
