- 0:00I discovered dark magic a few years ago
- 0:02thanks to my grandmother. She was a
- 0:05very solitary woman, one of those
- 0:07people who seemed to have learned to
- 0:09live perfectly well without needing
- 0:11anyone's company. My mother, on the
- 0:14other hand, seemed to loathe her.
- 0:16Whenever she spoke of her, she did so
- 0:18with a strange mix of annoyance and
- 0:20contempt, as if behind every word of my
- 0:21grandmother there was something she
- 0:23didn't want to remember. She said she
- 0:26was strange, cold, and had customs that
- 0:28weren't normal. I never understood
- 0:31exactly what she meant. Even so, she
- 0:34was my grandmother and every now and
- 0:36then I had to visit her. I hated going.
- 0:39Her house was gloomy, even during the
- 0:41day. From the outside, it didn't seem
- 0:44to have anything particularly strange.
- 0:46It was an old building with worn-out
- 0:48walls and a garden that hadn't received
- 0:51proper care in years. But as soon as I
- 0:54crossed the door, I felt something
- 0:56change. The air became different. I
- 0:59didn't know how to explain it as a
- 1:01child. It was as if inside that house,
- 1:03the world worked a little slower. The
- 1:06sounds from outside disappeared and
- 1:08silence seemed to occupy every corner.
- 1:11The old furniture creaked even when no
- 1:13one touched it, and there was a
- 1:15permanent smell of damp wood, dust, and
- 1:17something harder to identify, similar
- 1:20to burnt candles. The strangest thing
- 1:22was the cold. My grandmother didn't
- 1:25have air conditioning, yet inside it
- 1:27was always unbearably cold. It could be
- 1:30infernally hot outside, but just
- 1:32stepping inside was enough to make my
- 1:34skin crawl. I remember more than once
- 1:37rubbing my arms while my mother talked
- 1:39to her, wondering how it could be
- 1:41possible for a house to be so cold. I
- 1:44never received an explanation. On those
- 1:47few visits, I used to sit in an
- 1:49armchair next to her bookshelf. It was
- 1:51a huge piece of furniture, made of dark
- 1:53wood, almost black from the years. It
- 1:56was full of books of different sizes,
- 1:59some so old that their covers were
- 2:01cracked and had bent corners. Many were
- 2:04covered by a fine layer of dust that
- 2:06seemed to indicate they hadn't been
- 2:08opened in a very long time. I felt an
- 2:11enormous curiosity for them and my
- 2:13grandmother knew it. Every time I tried
- 2:16to take one, she would hit my hand. No,
- 2:19that was all she would say. She never
- 2:21explained to me why. At first, it just
- 2:24annoyed me. Over time, I started to
- 2:27feel a certain resentment toward her. I
- 2:30didn't understand what could be so
- 2:32special about simple books that she
- 2:33wouldn't even let me touch them. But
- 2:36ironically, her prohibitions only
- 2:38managed to increase my curiosity. So, I
- 2:42started to wait. I took advantage of
- 2:44every time my grandmother sat down to
- 2:46eat with the rest of the family. While
- 2:48everyone was distracted talking, I
- 2:50would quietly get up from the armchair
- 2:52and take one of the books. Some were
- 2:55written in languages I didn’t
- 2:57understand. There were pages full of
- 2:59symbols, drawings of human figures
- 3:01surrounded by circles, animals I
- 3:03didn’t recognize, and geometric
- 3:05shapes that seemed to repeat from one
- 3:07page to the next. There were also
- 3:10illustrations of candles, containers,
- 3:12amulets, and objects that seemed to
- 3:14have been used in strange ceremonies. I
- 3:17didn't understand what I was seeing,
- 3:19but the images made it quite clear what
- 3:21it was all about. Spells, rituals,
- 3:24symbols, invocations, and things that,
- 3:27even as a child, I knew I probably
- 3:30shouldn't be reading. Even so, I would
- 3:34remain mesmerized in front of those
- 3:36pages. There was something hypnotic
- 3:38about them and that rush of adrenaline
- 3:40from doing something you were forbidden
- 3:41to do. The words I could manage to
- 3:45understand spoke of things that seemed
- 3:47impossible: altering small things at
- 3:48will, communicating with that which was
- 3:50beyond what humans could perceive,
- 3:52protecting oneself from certain
- 3:54presences, and even obtaining favors in
- 3:56exchange for offering something. I
- 3:59didn't understand the conditions, and I
- 4:01wasn't interested in them either. As a
- 4:04child, the idea of being able to do
- 4:05anything just by knowing the right
- 4:07words seemed fascinating to me. I
- 4:11thought magic was like any other
- 4:13knowledge, that it was enough to learn
- 4:15it, that if something went wrong, I
- 4:17could simply stop doing it. It never
- 4:20occurred to me that some knowledge
- 4:22could have consequences, even after
- 4:24closing the book. Over the years, that
- 4:28curiosity didn't disappear; it grew
- 4:30larger. A few years later, when I was
- 4:33already a teenager, my grandmother
- 4:35passed away from respiratory failure
- 4:37while she was completely alone in her
- 4:40room. The funeral was brief and poorly
- 4:42organized. The atmosphere was heavy,
- 4:44uncomfortable. Everyone seemed to want
- 4:46to get it over with as soon as possible
- 4:48. The strange thing was that I didn't
- 4:51see anyone cry, not even my mother. I
- 4:53don't know why, but that ended up
- 4:55making me feel even worse for also not
- 4:57feeling particularly bad. During the
- 5:01funeral, I couldn't stop thinking about
- 5:03the house, the shelf, the books, and,
- 5:05above all, all those things my
- 5:07grandmother had never wanted to explain
- 5:09to me. The house was inherited by her
- 5:12first daughter, who immediately decided
- 5:14to sell it along with everything
- 5:15related to the witchcraft my
- 5:17grandmother used. This was my last
- 5:20chance. While pretending to help take
- 5:22all the objects out of the house, I
- 5:24looked for anything I could take
- 5:26without anyone noticing. In the end, I
- 5:28took a couple of those books and hid
- 5:30them under my clothes to take them to
- 5:32my mother's car. No one noticed. I
- 5:36didn't know exactly what I was stealing
- 5:38, but I knew that if I left those books
- 5:40behind, I would probably never have
- 5:42access to them again. From then on,
- 5:45something began that over time turned
- 5:48into an obsession. Every night I read a
- 5:51few pages. I tried to compare the
- 5:53symbols, memorize words, and understand
- 5:56the parts written in languages I didn't
- 5:58know. Some pages seemed contradictory,
- 6:02others spoke of consequences in such an
- 6:04ambiguous way that I didn't know if
- 6:06they were real warnings or just old
- 6:09superstitions. But the more I read, the
- 6:12more I wanted to know. Months passed,
- 6:15then a year, then another. For a couple
- 6:18of years, I studied those two books in
- 6:20secret, convinced that sooner or later
- 6:23I would find something that really
- 6:25worked. And finally, I found it. Or at
- 6:28least, that's what I thought. It was a
- 6:30simple spell compared to the others. It
- 6:34didn't seem to require much, and from
- 6:36what I could understand, its purpose
- 6:38was to cause a small, momentary effect.
- 6:41I tried it one night. I remember the
- 6:43silence of my room perfectly. I
- 6:46remember the pages open in front of me.
- 6:49I remember repeating the words with the
- 6:51same pronunciation I had practiced for
- 6:54weeks, never giving up despite all the
- 6:56times I tried, only to end in long,
- 6:58uncomfortable silences. And then it
- 7:01happened. The piece of paper I was
- 7:03holding in my hand began to burn in a
- 7:06totally unnatural way. For an instant,
- 7:09I stood completely still, watching as
- 7:10the flames consumed the paper between
- 7:12my fingers. Then I dropped it because
- 7:15of the surprise and the emotions
- 7:16flooding over me. Satisfaction surged
- 7:19through my entire body. After so many
- 7:21years, I had finally managed to make
- 7:24something from those books work. I
- 7:26smiled like an idiot. I never stopped.
- 7:29I kept going, and going, each time with
- 7:31bigger things. I burned some wooden
- 7:34objects. I managed to make a couple
- 7:36disappear and could do this more
- 7:38consistently. It encouraged me to try
- 7:40anything I read in that book. And that
- 7:42was when I found that spell to cause a
- 7:44strong, obsessive love in someone who
- 7:46doesn't love you back. I immediately
- 7:49thought of Jessica, my classmate. She
- 7:52was a beautiful woman, well-kept, and
- 7:54with an unimaginable body. A wonderful
- 7:56woman in every sense. I had never
- 7:59talked to her, I never felt capable,
- 8:01but I never lacked the desire every
- 8:03time I watched her after class, and at
- 8:06the end of the day, I was just going to
- 8:08make her look at me the same way I
- 8:10looked at her. Without forcing her to
- 8:12do anything. It only required something
- 8:15of hers, some of my blood, and an
- 8:16object to burn over it in
- 8:17representation of the desire. The next
- 8:20day, as soon as I arrived, I changed my
- 8:23seat to one behind her and, seeing her
- 8:25arrive as radiant as ever, I waited a
- 8:27good while until she was distracted.
- 8:31Then I used some small but sharp
- 8:32scissors to cut a lock of her hair that
- 8:33was sticking out from behind the chair
- 8:35she was sitting in. It was a small
- 8:38enough lock that she wouldn't have
- 8:40noticed. I put it in my bag along with
- 8:43the scissors and pretended that nothing
- 8:45had happened while I looked around to
- 8:47check that no one had seen me. I felt
- 8:50nervous, but just thinking about the
- 8:52results made me feel it was worth it.
- 8:55As soon as I got home, I locked myself
- 8:57in my room, turned off the lights, lit
- 8:59some candles, and tore out the page
- 9:01with that emotional subjection ritual.
- 9:04It came with the figure of the demon
- 9:06Asmodeus drawn on it, a crucial part of
- 9:08the ritual and a figure to whom I owe
- 9:10quite a lot if this actually works. I
- 9:13placed the locks and a piece of paper
- 9:15with Jessica's name on it, along with a
- 9:17razor I had saved. I made a large
- 9:19enough cut on my forearm for the blood
- 9:21to slide down, eventually dripping
- 9:23little by little onto Jessica's lock of
- 9:25hair. I tried to contain the pain by
- 9:29clenching my teeth hard, then I recited
- 9:31the spell that caused small objects to
- 9:33combust, burning the page with the
- 9:35figure of Asmodeus and immediately
- 9:37feeling a heavy vibe flooding the room.
- 9:40I felt as if everything around me had
- 9:42turned black and desolate. My eyes
- 9:45closed as if I had entered a trance,
- 9:47but I could still somehow see my
- 9:49surroundings perfectly. It was a
- 9:52sensation difficult to describe. Upon
- 9:55opening my eyes, I looked everywhere,
- 9:57feeling a cold like that of a freezer
- 9:59filling my room. As soon as I could
- 10:01react, I got up and didn't take long to
- 10:03clean up the scene. I covered the cut
- 10:06with a couple of bandages I had bought
- 10:08and simply waited. I felt strange. I
- 10:11never thought I would be capable of
- 10:13doing something of this style. I didn't
- 10:15really know if it was wrong, but I
- 10:16managed to avoid the subject and
- 10:18distract myself with something else
- 10:20throughout that day. It was the next
- 10:22morning when it happened. Jessica sat
- 10:24next to me. She looked at me several
- 10:26times until she started talking to me.
- 10:28I was stunned. I thought about the
- 10:31ritual and a smile took over my face.
- 10:34Seeing her up close was like being in a
- 10:35dream. When leaving class, she gave me
- 10:38her phone number in a casual, yet at
- 10:40the same time so loving way that it
- 10:42made me feel an uncontrollable emotion.
- 10:44I imagined my fantasies coming true,
- 10:47everything I had always wanted with her
- 10:49. The following three days were even
- 10:52more exciting. Jessica started setting
- 10:55her friends aside to prioritize me. We
- 10:58would sit together anywhere, and she
- 10:59would stare at me for long periods of
- 11:01time. Every day I would come home to
- 11:04dozens of messages from her, voice
- 11:06notes, memes, and conversations that
- 11:08could last for hours, but she also
- 11:10became increasingly dependent. If I
- 11:12didn't reply to her messages or took
- 11:14too long, she would get extremely upset
- 11:17. Even so, I was delighted. I had
- 11:20gotten exactly what I wanted. We
- 11:23started something like a relationship.
- 11:25I never really had the nerve to ask her
- 11:28directly. On a rainy night, around 9
- 11:31p.m., I was home alone when I heard
- 11:33loud banging on the front door. I
- 11:36thought my parents had arrived, but
- 11:38upon opening it, a stifled scream
- 11:40escaped my throat. It looked like
- 11:43Jessica. Her hair was completely
- 11:45disheveled and her makeup had run down
- 11:48her face. She was shaking in an almost
- 11:50inhuman way. Perhaps it was from the
- 11:53cold of having walked in the rain or
- 11:55something else. I didn't really care
- 11:58enough. The shadow of the porch barely
- 12:01allowed me to make out her face, except
- 12:03for her wide, exaggerated eyes. "Gael,
- 12:06no, you don't answer, you ignore me."
- 12:09Her voice was broken. I knew this was
- 12:12because I had left her on read for
- 12:14hours. I never thought she would take
- 12:16it this far. Jessica, why did you come
- 12:19here? Besides, I don't remember telling
- 12:22you where I live. She began to cry. Her
- 12:25crying was strange, distorted, almost
- 12:27like that of an animal. I took a step
- 12:30back. I'm sorry, I have to go, Jessica.
- 12:34And I closed the door. I locked it and
- 12:37ran to my room. I heard her screaming
- 12:39as she hit the door over and over again
- 12:41. The sound ended up being unbearable.
- 12:45I never thought I'd be afraid of the
- 12:46girl I wanted most. I put on my
- 12:49headphones, turned the volume up to the
- 12:51max, and lay in bed to ignore her until
- 12:53she left, like a damn coward. The next
- 12:57day, Jessica acted as if nothing had
- 12:59happened. She was smiling and as
- 13:01well-dressed as ever. She gave me gifts
- 13:03, drawings, and letters. It was nice,
- 13:06but I couldn't see her anymore. Still,
- 13:08after class, she wanted me to walk her
- 13:11home. When I refused, she threw a
- 13:13tantrum in front of the school. Tears
- 13:16began to run down her face. I know you
- 13:19don't love me. I tried to calm her down
- 13:21, but I couldn't. In the end, I only
- 13:23managed to convince her to leave. That
- 13:26same night, she started sending me
- 13:28photos on WhatsApp. They showed a lock
- 13:30of my own hair, some candles, and
- 13:33hearts drawn around it. I didn't know
- 13:36when she had gotten my hair. It was
- 13:38sick. I asked her why she had done
- 13:40something like that. She only replied,
- 13:42"I'm going to prove to you how much I
- 13:44love you." I immediately knew what she
- 13:47meant. For the first time, I felt real
- 13:50panic. I sent her messages. She didn't
- 13:53reply. I went downstairs and checked
- 13:55the house windows with paranoia. Then
- 13:57there was a knock at the door. The
- 13:59front door. This time I looked through
- 14:01the peephole. It was Jessica, even
- 14:03worse than the time before. Her arms
- 14:06were cut unevenly and blood had dripped
- 14:08onto the porch floor. Despite that, she
- 14:12kept pounding on the door. Gael, come
- 14:15out. I know you're in there. I know how
- 14:17much you want me. I want you too. Open
- 14:20the door. She repeated the same words
- 14:23over and over in exactly the same tone.
- 14:26I called the police. A patrol car
- 14:28arrived surprisingly quickly. Jessica
- 14:31tried to run away while screaming. Then
- 14:34I heard her screams fade into the
- 14:36distance. Only then did I have the
- 14:38courage to look out and see what was
- 14:40happening. I never knew exactly what
- 14:42happened to her. Through school rumors,
- 14:45I heard she ended up in a local
- 14:47psychiatric hospital. I preferred to
- 14:50leave it behind as an anecdote about a
- 14:52crazy ex-girlfriend. When I turned 22,
- 14:58that was when I started working at a
- 15:00call center. With adult life and that
- 15:04bad experience with my ex, I left all
- 15:06that stuff behind, leaving the books on
- 15:08a shelf to gather dust for a good while
- 15:10. Nowadays, I enjoy a very quiet life,
- 15:14an average salary, and several friends
- 15:16at work. I only have one problem. Larry
- 15:20, my miserable boss, has made it his
- 15:22mission to screw up my life every
- 15:24chance he gets. A couple of months ago,
- 15:27just as I was about to leave, he
- 15:29ordered me to work overtime. I called
- 15:32him an idiot, and he replied with a
- 15:34pretentious smile full of disgusting
- 15:36arrogance. Then, I'll have to
- 15:39reconsider whether you're really
- 15:40indispensable here or not. Also, ever
- 15:43since I joined the company and started
- 15:45getting along poorly with him, I
- 15:46started getting the worst clients.
- 15:49Hysterical ladies were the least I had
- 15:51to deal with every morning, and he
- 15:53always walks by me with that damn smile
- 15:55that makes my blood boil. Despite my
- 15:58consistently good work, he has never
- 16:01agreed to give me a promotion. He even
- 16:04laughs every time I go to ask him for
- 16:06one. Although the worst came later. I
- 16:08met a girl named Casandra. After
- 16:11Jessica, she was the breath of fresh
- 16:13air I needed. I met her through Tinder.
- 16:16Over text, she seemed like my ideal
- 16:18woman. She was a beauty, but besides
- 16:21that, she was a very busy girl, so
- 16:23planning a date took us longer than
- 16:25expected. Finally, she had a day off. A
- 16:29Friday morning. I had to work at that
- 16:33time, so swallowing my pride, I went to
- 16:35Larry's office to ask for the day off.
- 16:38I walked in and saw him smile as soon
- 16:40as I entered. I couldn't hide my
- 16:42annoyance no matter how hard I tried. I
- 16:44sat down in front of him and asked him
- 16:46in a way that was unusually serious for
- 16:49me. He seemed quite convinced, despite
- 16:52how much he made my life impossible,
- 16:53and surprisingly, he agreed. On
- 16:57Thursday night, he sent me a message
- 16:59ordering me to come in tomorrow due to
- 17:00corporate needs. With all the regret in
- 17:04the world, I let Cassandra know, who
- 17:06replied disappointed, to say the least,
- 17:08since we had no idea when we would be
- 17:10able to go on our date next. I called
- 17:13Larry immediately, barely controlling
- 17:15my frustration and helplessness. Hey,
- 17:18Larry, what is this? What do you mean
- 17:20you won't give me the day off anymore
- 17:22and you're telling me now? Yes, but you
- 17:24must understand that we need coverage.
- 17:26But you approved my day off. The
- 17:28company's needs change. Without another
- 17:32word, I hung up on him while clutching
- 17:34my head in frustration. That jerk has
- 17:36gotten away with it so many times. How
- 17:39many times must he have done this
- 17:41without suffering any consequences?
- 17:43After hours of thinking about something
- 17:45I could do, some way to pay him back
- 17:47and wipe that smile off his face, my
- 17:49eyes turned to the old shelf in my room
- 17:51. All the books were still there,
- 17:54including my grandmother's old books. I
- 17:57walked over to them, blowing the dust
- 17:59off them to start looking through the
- 18:01pages for a punishment that would be
- 18:03fair for someone like him. After
- 18:05searching for so long, I found one. The
- 18:08mourner's debt. It said that whoever
- 18:11has caused affliction shall know
- 18:12affliction, that their body shall
- 18:14remain inert while their will slowly
- 18:16withers away. I wasn't sure if I
- 18:19understood 100%what it meant, but it
- 18:21still sounded like a fair suffering to
- 18:23teach him a lesson. It was exactly what
- 18:27I needed. After so much time studying
- 18:30that strange language in the book, I
- 18:32realized that all the spells had a
- 18:34warning, one that demanded a mandatory
- 18:36sacrifice depending on the magnitude of
- 18:38each spell. I had used them excessively
- 18:41when I was young. It made me feel
- 18:44powerful to be able to perform those
- 18:46spells at will, but I never suffered
- 18:47any consequences for it by not
- 18:49sacrificing anything. Besides, after so
- 18:52much time without using it, I doubt it
- 18:54will be a problem to use it one last
- 18:56time just for this. I read it aloud
- 18:59while holding my blade before making a
- 19:01cut on my wrist and spilling drops of
- 19:03blood onto the page of the book. I
- 19:06watched it trickle down my arm in an
- 19:08almost mesmerizing way before coming to
- 19:10my senses and quickly running to
- 19:12bandage the wound. The next day, Larry
- 19:14arrived as usual, although from the
- 19:16moment he started his shift, something
- 19:18seemed off about him. He was pale,
- 19:21barely spoke, and seemed to have
- 19:22trouble even concentrating in front of
- 19:24the computer. Midway through the day,
- 19:27he had to get up from his desk and lock
- 19:29himself in the bathroom for a while.
- 19:31Nobody paid it much mind except for me.
- 19:34I was able to laugh in peace and do
- 19:36what I wanted without having to put up
- 19:38with him bothering me as always. The
- 19:40strange thing was that the next day he
- 19:42didn't show up, nor the next, nor the
- 19:44one after that. For the following two
- 19:47weeks, his name kept appearing on the
- 19:49schedules, but his seat remained empty.
- 19:52I didn't ask about him. I didn't want
- 19:55to raise suspicions and, honestly, I
- 19:57didn't care much either. Until one
- 20:00afternoon, while waiting for a call to
- 20:02end, I heard two coworkers talking
- 20:04behind me. Did you hear about Larry yet
- 20:07? No. What happened? He died yesterday.
- 20:12What? They say he had been doing very
- 20:14poorly for days. The two continued
- 20:16talking in low voices, but I didn't
- 20:18hear anything else. I just stared at
- 20:20the screen with my headphones on and
- 20:22the sound of an incoming call in the
- 20:24background. I was in shock. I didn't
- 20:27feel guilt, just surprise. I didn't
- 20:30think it would lead to his death. It
- 20:32didn't make me feel good either. I felt
- 20:35indifferent about it. Even so, I
- 20:37couldn't get it out of my head. It was
- 20:40as if the image of him, so faded two
- 20:42weeks ago, was playing in my head over
- 20:45and over again. When I finished my
- 20:47shift and walked down the street, I
- 20:49felt an unusual chill. I live in a
- 20:52fairly hot city. Besides, it was June.
- 20:56It caught me by surprise, so I decided
- 20:58to look around as if I had a strange
- 21:00instinct inside me warning me of
- 21:01something's arrival. It's hard to
- 21:04explain. Looking around, I only saw
- 21:07people walking and cars. I kept looking
- 21:10for a good while, as if I were waiting
- 21:12for something strange to happen. And so
- 21:14it did. I watched as a thing slowly
- 21:17approached from the distance. At first
- 21:20I thought it was a person, a tall
- 21:22silhouette walking down the street with
- 21:24a strange difficulty. I didn't give it
- 21:28much thought until I noticed the way it
- 21:29moved its arms. They were too long. Not
- 21:33by much, just enough for something in
- 21:36my head to tell me that those
- 21:37proportions were not normal. I kept
- 21:40watching it and the more I did, the
- 21:42more things I found that didn't fit.
- 21:45One of its shoulders was much higher
- 21:47than the other. Its arms hung down
- 21:50almost to its knees and its fingers
- 21:52were long and thin, ending in dark
- 21:54nails. Then I saw how it walked. It
- 21:58didn't drag its feet or limp, it simply
- 22:00seemed not to know how to use a
- 22:02physical body. Each step was different
- 22:05from the last, as if it were imitating
- 22:07something it had never learned. That
- 22:09was when I was able to see its face,
- 22:12and I wish I hadn't. It had an
- 22:15elongated face, similar to a hairless
- 22:17goat, but there was something deeply
- 22:18wrong with it. Its mouth remained
- 22:21slightly open, but there seemed to be
- 22:24nothing inside but darkness. Its eyes
- 22:26were what terrified me the most. They
- 22:29were so dark they looked completely
- 22:31empty. And yet, I knew perfectly well
- 22:34it was looking at me. I kept watching
- 22:37it for a few more seconds and then I
- 22:39discovered it had long, dark, pointed
- 22:42horns. Then I saw its hands. Its
- 22:45fingers moved slowly, one by one, as if
- 22:48it were checking that it could still
- 22:50move them. It was at that moment when I
- 22:53realized I had made a mistake. I had
- 22:56been looking at it for too long and now
- 22:58that thing was getting too close. I
- 23:01felt a shiver run through my whole body
- 23:03and that was my signal to run away. I
- 23:06didn't want to check what else I might
- 23:08find if I kept looking at it. That
- 23:10thing was slow enough for me to lose it
- 23:13after a while. I kept running like a
- 23:16madman without caring about the stares
- 23:18of the people around me. I knew
- 23:20immediately that they couldn't see it,
- 23:22and I wasn't crazy enough to be
- 23:23imagining things. I ran as hard as I
- 23:26could until I reached my apartment.
- 23:28Still trembling and completely pale, I
- 23:30opened the door and slammed it shut
- 23:32upon entering to then search the book
- 23:34for some spell to get that thing off me
- 23:36. As I searched, I started to realize.
- 23:39Perhaps all that time using it started
- 23:41to take its toll after so long. Perhaps
- 23:44I used a very powerful spell without a
- 23:46sacrifice and all that made me have a
- 23:48debt with the underworld. After so much
- 23:50desperate searching, I finally found it
- 23:53. The rite of the closed threshold to
- 23:56temporarily reject that which has been
- 23:58called from outside the world. No
- 24:01summoned entity will be able to cross
- 24:02the boundary while the rite remains in
- 24:04effect. Absence is not destruction.
- 24:07What is rejected will always return. As
- 24:10I was reading that, I heard heavy
- 24:12footsteps on the stairs leading to my
- 24:14apartment. They were like large, heavy
- 24:17hooves getting closer and closer until
- 24:19it reached my door, trying to force it
- 24:22open. As soon as I named that spell in
- 24:25the strange language, I felt a
- 24:26deafening silence that enveloped me. I
- 24:29felt an incredible peace the moment it
- 24:31ceased. My sweaty hands dropped the
- 24:34book and uncontrollable laughter took
- 24:36over me. My eyes were teary from the
- 24:39fear I felt, but I couldn't stop
- 24:41feeling ecstatic. I had gotten away
- 24:44with it again. I enjoyed that whole day
- 24:46too much. I got rid of my insufferable
- 24:48boss and whatever was stalking me over
- 24:51my debt. To celebrate my triumph, I
- 24:53went out with some friends to a party
- 24:55where I drank until I threw up. Drunker
- 24:58than ever, I woke up that same morning
- 25:00with an incredible hangover in my room.
- 25:03I was awakened by some knocks on my
- 25:05door that suddenly became a loud bang
- 25:07that forced it open. Still in that
- 25:09state, I jumped out of bed terrified. I
- 25:12heard hooves on my apartment floor and
- 25:14an immense cold all around me. These
- 25:17were clear signs that that thing hadn't
- 25:19left. Deep down I imagined it couldn't
- 25:22be that easy and unfortunately I was
- 25:24right. That thing came back. Before it
- 25:28reached my room, I grabbed the book,
- 25:30read the spell, feeling that silence
- 25:31again while breathing heavily and
- 25:33completely terrified. All that day,
- 25:36paranoia invaded me. I knew the spell
- 25:38didn't stop it, it only pushed it away
- 25:41temporarily. It was in the early
- 25:43morning, before falling asleep, when I
- 25:45heard the steps on the stairs. They
- 25:47were faster despite being so heavy.
- 25:50Before it reached my front door, I said
- 25:52the spell out loud and that silence
- 25:54returned, allowing me to sleep. The
- 25:57next day I had to go to work. With
- 25:59little motivation, I got out of bed and
- 26:02after changing I went straight to work,
- 26:04holding the torn page from the book in
- 26:06my pocket. In case that thing came back
- 26:09and I needed that page to make the
- 26:11spell more effective or whatever, I
- 26:13really just wanted to find a way out of
- 26:15this situation and live peacefully.
- 26:18Before reaching my job, I saw the
- 26:20figure again approaching through the
- 26:22people as if only he existed. Now his
- 26:25footsteps became louder and more
- 26:27thunderous. I froze and mentioned the
- 26:30spell again with clear nervousness in
- 26:32my voice. Now it took much less than 24
- 26:34hours to appear and I could see it from
- 26:37very far away. Its figure was so
- 26:40strange and gave off such a terrifying
- 26:41vibe that I could recognize it a couple
- 26:43of kilometers away. But as soon as I
- 26:46processed it, that thing was already
- 26:47running toward me. I tried to run, but
- 26:50I noticed its speed was much greater
- 26:52than mine. I shouted the spell again
- 26:54and the thing reappeared in the
- 26:56distance. This time it ran a little
- 26:59faster, enough to get at least 100
- 27:01meters closer than last time. I shouted
- 27:04the spell while running to get away.
- 27:06Now it had gotten even closer. I kept
- 27:10shouting that spell just before that
- 27:11being could reach me, bumping into
- 27:13several people who saw me as a madman
- 27:15running from nothing. Having not lasted
- 27:18long since I left my house, I was still
- 27:20close. I ran up the stairs listening to
- 27:23how that thing ran at an inhuman speed
- 27:25from a distance to then enter the
- 27:27building. I shouted the spell once more
- 27:30while crying in despair. Its heavy and
- 27:33thunderous footsteps were becoming more
- 27:35overwhelming. Each time I shouted the
- 27:37spell, it was a few extra seconds
- 27:39before it reached me, which were
- 27:41decreasing more and more. Upon entering
- 27:44my apartment, I tried to close the door
- 27:46, but before I could, it burst it open,
- 27:49making me fall to the floor. I shouted
- 27:52the spell, making it return to the
- 27:53start again, but it didn't take long to
- 27:55return. I was delaying the inevitable.
- 27:59Every time I said the spell, my debt
- 28:01grew larger and apparently that
- 28:02strengthened that thing. I started
- 28:06repeating the spell non-stop, again and
- 28:08again and again and again, until I
- 28:10voluntarily stopped because I knew it
- 28:12was stupid to continue. As much as I
- 28:15wanted to live, there was nothing to be
- 28:17done. I closed my eyes and that was
- 28:19when it happened. I felt as if my soul
- 28:21were being violently ripped from my own
- 28:23body by the skeletal hands of that
- 28:25being. After that, everything turned
- 28:28black until I felt my soul being
- 28:30dragged somewhere. I could only feel
- 28:34the infernal flames instantly taking
- 28:37over my being completely. I had no
- 28:39consciousness, but even so, I could
- 28:41understand what was happening. I had no
- 28:43eyes, but I was still able to see
- 28:45everything that was consuming me around
- 28:47me. I wanted to scream, but I had no
- 28:50mouth to do so. I didn't know how long
- 28:52I had been there. Centuries and seconds
- 28:55ceased to have any difference. There
- 28:58was no sadness, no horror, no weeping,
- 29:01only an agony that seemed to exist even
- 29:04after I ceased to exist.
