- 0:00Quick car quiz. Which brand do you think
- 0:03makes this car? I'll give you a clue.
- 0:05It's over a hundred years old and it was
- 0:08born in a garage in Oxford, but now it
- 0:11is wearing a laser on top. You guessed
- 0:14it. This is an MG. And this is an MG07.
- 0:49Welcome to Wheels, where we cover the
- 0:51newest, coolest, and wildest vehicles
- 0:54from the Chinese car market. Be sure to
- 0:56like, subscribe, and hit the bell.
- 0:59Welcome to Wheels. I'm Jonathan, and we
- 1:01were lucky enough to be invited for an
- 1:03uplose first look of the unveiling of
- 1:06MG's latest EV. First, the trap. This is
- 1:10the MG07.
- 1:13You heard that correctly, the 07, not
- 1:16the already selling petrol fastback MG7
- 1:19that is here in China. That is the same
- 1:23brand, a similar shape, but a completely
- 1:26different car. The MG7 runs on
- 1:29dinosaurs, whereas the MG07
- 1:32runs on electrons. If you take one thing
- 1:35from this video, it's this. Mind the
- 1:38Zero. The shape. A big five door
- 1:42fastback with a sloping roof line into a
- 1:46panoramic glass canopy. It comes with
- 1:49C-shaped headlights, clamshell bonnet,
- 1:52semihidden door handles, frameless
- 1:55doors, a full width light bar, five
- 1:58stage active rear spoiler that pops up
- 2:01when things get a little bit spicy. So,
- 2:04being a fastback, the biggest advantage
- 2:06of this car is definitely the boot size.
- 2:10And my first time seeing this, it is
- 2:13absolutely huge.
- 2:16I could pretty much lie down in this
- 2:18space here. I'm not going to and I'm
- 2:20very tempted, but I could pretty much
- 2:22lie down across it. And you can see
- 2:24there is a monumental amount of space
- 2:26just on this top layer here. But if you
- 2:29lift up this bit, I'm guessing, wow,
- 2:32it's even bigger. It's pretty much
- 2:35doubled the size of this boot. And it is
- 2:37extremely deep as you can see here.
- 2:41So, let's just say how it is. It looks
- 2:44like a Taken and a Panamera have had a
- 2:47lovely weekend together, particularly
- 2:49when you look at the rear here with this
- 2:51full width light bar. They do come in a
- 2:54new signature color which is Mel Purple
- 2:57as well as all the very bold base
- 2:59colors. They kind of remind me of old
- 3:02British sweets, particularly this one,
- 3:04which looks like the pink from a
- 3:05Battenburg. And the purple reminds me of
- 3:07a Palmer violet. Oh, and I chose this
- 3:09color and we came here today. They had
- 3:11all of these flowers. I didn't ask for
- 3:13these flowers to be put in here, but
- 3:14they were just here. And it just seems
- 3:16to be like the opposite of MG's old
- 3:18slogan, which is your mother wouldn't
- 3:21like it. However, I think now your
- 3:25mother would like it. And now the most
- 3:27genuinely notable bit of this car is
- 3:31this, the laser. This is the first MG
- 3:35car to come equipped with a liar. And
- 3:39this one is specifically Momento's R
- 3:42seven driver assistance chip which is
- 3:45being branded as a worldclass chip. On
- 3:49paper, it's classed as premium assisted
- 3:52driving at mainstream prices. However,
- 3:55we'll see about it when we drive it.
- 3:57From what I've learned from doing
- 3:58reviews of other MG cars, particularly
- 4:00the MG4, it is this that MG give you so
- 4:05much tech for the money that you pay.
- 4:07And as a Brit, these things kind of
- 4:09really scramble my mind because when I
- 4:12think of an NG, I think of these really
- 4:14elegant, whizzy things that you repair
- 4:16on a Sunday morning. And they definitely
- 4:19don't have these laser thingabobies on
- 4:21the top of it. This one, however,
- 4:23updates itself overnight. And it's
- 4:26punchier than I first thought. 230 kW
- 4:29and 350 Newton m of torque from SIC's
- 4:34new integrated rear motor. That's about
- 4:38310 horsepower. MG have locked in two
- 4:42versions of the car in terms of mileage,
- 4:45a 610 km car and a longerlegged 840.
- 4:50Both are CLTC, so knock a chunk off for
- 4:53real world performance. The topsp spec
- 4:55version runs an 800 volt platform with
- 4:585C charging for genuinely quick top-ups.
- 5:01Lower trims sit on 400. The battery is
- 5:05lithium ion manganese phosphate which is
- 5:08costefficient to build but much more
- 5:11difficult to catch a light which is
- 5:14rather the point at this price. The full
- 5:16specs aren't out yet but we will be
- 5:18first to tell you when they are. Price
- 5:21is firm now and it's aggressive.
- 5:23Pre-sales open early August. The 610 km
- 5:27version with lidar lands under $150,000
- 5:30yen about $22,000.
- 5:33And even the top 840 kilometer version
- 5:36stays under 180,000 yen, roughly
- 5:40$26,000.
- 5:42For context, MG reckons the nearest
- 5:44rival with 840 km, 800 volt and lidar
- 5:49starts nearer 230,000
- 5:53yen, about $34,000.
- 5:56It's pretty much a knife fight between
- 5:59the Xiaomi Sue7, uh, BYD Seal, Zika
- 6:040007,
- 6:05and also the Tesla Model 3. Cheap, it is
- 6:09not a bargain. It may be. Did you see
- 6:13our last Wheels EV tour where we got to
- 6:16see the beautiful Western Such province
- 6:18and think to yourself, "Man, I would
- 6:21love to do that." And would you like to
- 6:23travel with other car enthusiasts on
- 6:26another beautiful location for a
- 6:27once-ina-lifetime trip? Then look no
- 6:30further and join us on the next Wheels
- 6:33EV tour in September where we'll be
- 6:35going to another beautiful location in
- 6:38northern Shing Jang. If you would like
- 6:40to find out more information, all you
- 6:42have to do is go into the description
- 6:44and click the link below. So, getting
- 6:46into the cockpit, the car feels
- 6:48immediately very sporty. It's got a very
- 6:51low sort of seating position with these
- 6:54really comfortable seats that keep you
- 6:56very sort of tied in straight away.
- 6:59You've got soft touch features across
- 7:00the whole of the cockpit here. So across
- 7:02your legs and all the bits that you
- 7:04would normally touch the most steering
- 7:07wheel feels lovely. It's got these Tesla
- 7:10style spinny dial button things that we
- 7:13normally have as well as a few buttons
- 7:15in the middle and buttons in the center
- 7:16too. It's got some real buttons here
- 7:19which are very very nice.
- 7:20>> It also comes with a 15.6 in 2.5K
- 7:24central screen and a standard 8.88 in
- 7:28driver display. You've got one charging
- 7:31station on the left hand side here. 30 W
- 7:34it's saying and you've got some more
- 7:35underneath type-C and a 12vt there. And
- 7:39then as you start to get lower it starts
- 7:41to get a bit more plasticky. So
- 7:43obviously down here and the AR itself
- 7:45here. This is very very plasticky as
- 7:48well. But some of the things I really
- 7:50like about this particular version that
- 7:51we've been given today is that if when
- 7:54you press this button for example on
- 7:56this particular one, you've got a
- 7:58built-in tray table. And if you lift
- 8:00this up, you've got another vanity
- 8:02mirror as well as the ones on top too.
- 8:05You've got one above you. So you got a
- 8:06vanity mirror here and here. And even
- 8:09better on this one, on the headrest
- 8:11here, you've got this really cool design
- 8:13which says the Queen's Jubilee. I'm not
- 8:16entirely sure why they called it the
- 8:18Queen's Jubilee. Though I do know this
- 8:20zeroravity passenger seat is called the
- 8:23Queen's Seat, and I appreciate the nod
- 8:25to her late majesty, Queen Elizabeth II,
- 8:28God bless her soul, who actually trained
- 8:31as a mechanic and drove trucks in the
- 8:33auxiliary territorial service. MG have
- 8:36captured her passion for British cars
- 8:38and whilst nosing around the studio, we
- 8:40stumbled on this collaboration and it
- 8:42featured a lovely mural with her beloved
- 8:45corgis and of course an MGB Roadster in
- 8:48the background. Speaking of the MGB, we
- 8:51also found a demonstration car tracing
- 8:54MG's history and where the design
- 8:56elements were drawn from it. the clam
- 8:58shell bonnet and air ducts from the
- 9:01MGX181,
- 9:03the MGA's two-stage shoulders, and of
- 9:06course, the MGB GT's fastback. As you
- 9:09can see, there's definitely more to it
- 9:11than first meets the eye.
- 9:12>> Oh, and I forgot to mention that this
- 9:14new MG has this. Check it out.
- 9:19Look how big this Frank is.
- 9:25So coming into the back here and I feel
- 9:26like there's ample amount of room for my
- 9:29legs. So legs alone, there's like almost
- 9:32like two hand like fist width away from
- 9:35the seat there. It's plenty plenty of
- 9:38space there. And then the seats
- 9:40themselves are quite large. um going for
- 9:42your headroom. You can see here I've got
- 9:44about
- 9:47I've got about one fist or about maybe
- 9:49like three fingers three or four fingers
- 9:52just to the the top of the roof there,
- 9:56which is pretty good. And then soft
- 9:57touches all around, which is what I
- 10:00like. But my favorite part of this rear
- 10:03second row here is you've got real
- 10:07buttons for all of the massage, the
- 10:09cooling, and the heated seats. as well
- 10:12as you've got three different speakers,
- 10:14a larger speaker at the bottom here,
- 10:16speaker in a second, and a speaker above
- 10:18us here. And then in the center console,
- 10:21you have one USB charger here, and as
- 10:24well as two vents, which you can use to
- 10:26adjust your AC. So, there we go, folks.
- 10:30The MG07
- 10:31really wears its heritage very well. It
- 10:34harks back to the beginnings of the MGB
- 10:38GT where it had that really sloping
- 10:42fastback rear that you knew. And it's
- 10:44all here as well as you can see when
- 10:46they're bringing this into the future
- 10:48too. Even though it's been owned by SIC
- 10:52since 2007, the Octagon badge is still
- 10:56doing its best, except now it speaks in
- 11:00Mandarin. So, drop your thoughts below
- 11:02and let us know of what you think about
- 11:04this styling. Would you take this car
- 11:06over the Tesla Model 3? Let us know. And
- 11:09as always, thank you very much for
- 11:11watching and we'll see you in the next
- 11:13one.
- 11:18>> Thank you very much for watching and
- 11:20we'll see you in the next one. And I'm
- 11:22in this purple car. This is my new
- 11:25favorite color.
