Merlin Gerin Masterpact M16N1 - 1600A Circuit Breaker Test — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:10hi all
- 0:11my name is mas batenkop from kaiser
- 0:13power electronics and today we're taking
- 0:15a look at this good old merlin sharing
- 0:17master pact 16n1 it is a
- 0:211600 amp circuit breaker
- 0:24manually pumped also with a motor loader
- 0:28so i think we're going to have some fun
- 0:31with this and
- 0:35make a quite a jump on the workbench
- 0:38here when we try to
- 0:39switch it on as you can see right when i
- 0:42get it here it says
- 0:43charts so the spring is right now
- 0:46charged
- 0:46and it is off so with the
- 0:49under voltage control or under muscles
- 0:52circuit
- 0:53powered up we should be able to switch
- 0:54it in by simply
- 0:56pressing the on button so before getting
- 0:59ahead of ourselves
- 1:00we need some coffee
- 1:04when i picked this up i was
- 1:06unfortunately only on my bicycle
- 1:08and it was a yeah chance do you want to
- 1:10get it or do it not
- 1:12so i had to bring it home on my bicycle
- 1:14so yeah
- 1:16that was quite a ride taking that home
- 1:18two kilometers
- 1:20so we're going to take it apart check
- 1:23out
- 1:23the design inside and then we're going
- 1:26to see if it works
- 1:27and then maybe in some future videos do
- 1:29some actually
- 1:30high voltage short circuit tests maybe
- 1:33some high speed
- 1:34video filming of it so yeah let's just
- 1:36have some fun
- 1:39whoa at the front page here we have the
- 1:41product name we can also see it's tested
- 1:43up to 1 000 volt ac
- 1:45but normally 380 to 690 volt
- 1:49ac so that at 1600 amps makes this up
- 1:52around
- 1:53one megawatt of switching capability
- 1:56which is
- 1:56insane manually charged as i said before
- 2:00with this handle
- 2:01we also have a short circuit curve
- 2:04limiting
- 2:04feature over here with three
- 2:06potentiometers you can set the
- 2:08different timings of the curve as it
- 2:10should be switching out on
- 2:12and you can also yeah reset that now
- 2:15something that is rated
- 2:16for 1600 amps also has to have some
- 2:19pretty nice huge terminals
- 2:23so what we have here is something like
- 2:26eight centimeters times one so
- 2:3180 square millimeter thick copper
- 2:34terminals here at the back
- 2:35three of them as it's a three-phased
- 2:37unit the entire front here
- 2:39can be taken off to reveal
- 2:43the electronics and mechanics inside
- 2:48as it is trout right now i do not want
- 2:50to put my fingers into this whole
- 2:52mechanism which is the
- 2:54i don't even think it down here we can
- 2:56see the charged
- 2:57spring so let's take a look at that
- 2:59afterwards but
- 3:00all that we can see that over here the
- 3:02charge handle we have a large
- 3:04gear as it is a very hot loaded spring
- 3:07we also have a small motor so this can
- 3:10be motor charged
- 3:11seems to have some water damage on the
- 3:13pcb here hopefully that is
- 3:16okay we have a terminal plug over here
- 3:19that connects down to the
- 3:21release spring or release mechanism and
- 3:24also have a
- 3:25under voltage mechanism so we have to
- 3:28power the under voltage mechanism in
- 3:30order
- 3:31to switch it on and we can also remote
- 3:34trigger it with this
- 3:35release coil here wow
- 3:38look at that spring
- 3:42it is some 50 millimeters and in this
- 3:45compressed
- 3:46state it is down to some 60 millimeters
- 3:50and i think it will extend
- 3:53yeah well so maybe 10 10 12 centimeters
- 3:58that this whole arm assembly here will
- 4:01get all the way up
- 4:02to around here so that is
- 4:05a serious amount of kinetic energy
- 4:07stored in that spring
- 4:10at the top we have the three arc
- 4:12chimneys and this is
- 4:14simply a arc extinguisher
- 4:17device which is just
- 4:21a a lot of metal plates
- 4:24to take the heat out of a switching arc
- 4:27or
- 4:27short circuit fault current here we're
- 4:30looking straight down into the switching
- 4:32chamber over here we have the moving arm
- 4:35we can see it consists of one two three
- 4:38four five six seven eight nine ten
- 4:42parallel couple levers which have some
- 4:45switching elements sitting down here and
- 4:47we can also see the
- 4:49output terminal directly over here
- 4:51getting hit
- 4:52but it does have a wear surface just
- 4:56a 1 to 2 millimeter thick plate here
- 4:59and that is seriously dented all these
- 5:02black marks are dense
- 5:03going into it from the switching element
- 5:05over here
- 5:06we can also see arc
- 5:09seeing as we have rust forming here
- 5:12that the metal itself has simply been
- 5:14damaged by the
- 5:16hot air when switching this in okay so i
- 5:19have only hooked up the under voltage
- 5:21release coil
- 5:22i can switch that on here and with that
- 5:24switch on to 230 volt ac we should be
- 5:26able to
- 5:27switch it in i did not hook up the motor
- 5:31because that's rated for 380 volt ac so
- 5:33i would have to get that from my
- 5:35big plugs here so yeah let's try
- 5:38to turn on the under voltage release
- 5:41coil
- 5:43something clicked something clicked
- 5:50again
- 5:52okay let's try once again this time i
- 5:54have the answer voltage coil and also a
- 5:56closing release coil hooked up so we
- 5:58will switch it on first the under
- 6:00voltage coil then close release
- 6:02so let's see how that goes
- 6:10it does make some clean sounds
- 6:36okay so apparently we have this small
- 6:38circuit here
- 6:39with sets at time and this is the time
- 6:41between we have to
- 6:43engage the under voltage coil and the
- 6:45release coil and then it automatically
- 6:47tried to switch in
- 6:48and then try to switch off again perhaps
- 6:52internal fault missing main voltage i'm
- 6:55not sure of that
- 6:56it's very hard to find a manual for this
- 6:58old unit here
- 6:59so i actually am using some
- 7:03newer manuals here for some much newer
- 7:06products but seems to have the same
- 7:09terminal designations so i could at
- 7:11least get it to work
- 7:13but i want to hear this without the ear
- 7:16defenders on
- 7:17so let's try that again
- 7:21and well
- 7:24[Laughter]
- 7:29and nothing happens
- 7:31[Music]
- 7:34that might be because i have to charge
- 7:36it again
- 7:37so let's do that
- 7:42ah
- 7:50and just like that it's cranked and
- 7:54charged again so let's try to turn it on
- 7:57whoa
- 7:59that is a serious kick
- 8:04[Music]
- 8:08this is awesome i'm going to do some
- 8:10high-speed photography of this
- 8:12where we tried to switch off four
- 8:14kilojoules of capacitor
- 8:15energy into something and then maybe do
- 8:18some high-speed filming down into this
- 8:19spark
- 8:20arrestor area this is going to be
- 8:22awesome so
- 8:23until next time see ya
- 8:30[Music]
- 9:00you
