- 0:10well hello again
- 0:12to memories i have someone you're going
- 0:16to meet now
- 0:18who was the bravest man that in my view
- 0:22that ever lived
- 0:24um you'll hear the whole story
- 0:28it's a very sad story but a very
- 0:30wonderful story
- 0:31a very brave story and something
- 0:35that had never happened before and has
- 0:37never happened again
- 0:39so i want to introduce you to a man
- 0:41called nando perado
- 0:45was one of two people who walked out of
- 0:48the andes
- 0:49after the football the the
- 0:52rugby team had taken off
- 0:56to fly to chile and
- 0:59it was a terrible crash and a great many
- 1:03people died in that crash
- 1:05but then somic survived but this
- 1:08survived for a very long time nando
- 1:10parado the man that you're going to look
- 1:13at
- 1:13now was one of two people who walked out
- 1:16of that
- 1:17and we're going to have memories
- 1:20regarding
- 1:21that terrible event nando
- 1:25you're one of my very very best friends
- 1:27and we've been
- 1:28friends for a very long time and a big
- 1:30thank you for agreeing to
- 1:32come on to to to this wee show of mine
- 1:36you're in uruguay right now and it
- 1:39wasn't too long ago
- 1:40since i went for the first time to your
- 1:42home and stayed with you and so forth
- 1:44and and first of all you're in good form
- 1:48and good health with all this trouble
- 1:50that exists today
- 1:51and the family are thank you jackie for
- 1:54inviting me to be part of this selected
- 1:57group of your friends
- 1:58to recreate some of the memories that we
- 2:01have
- 2:02had in the last almost 50 years 48 years
- 2:06and it has been for me
- 2:09and my family a great influence the
- 2:11stewards
- 2:12all over these decades and there are no
- 2:15words to thank you
- 2:17for what you have done for us i'm now in
- 2:19montevideo uruguay
- 2:21the pandemic has hit us but not as hard
- 2:25as
- 2:25in many places in the world so we are
- 2:27free to roam around and
- 2:29keep a safe distance but we are we are
- 2:32safe here
- 2:33in this small country but with a
- 2:36very big big uh friendship to everybody
- 2:40well let's start when we first met each
- 2:43other maybe that's the best way to begin
- 2:45here because
- 2:46i was in and one is iris
- 2:49for the grand prix of argentina uh i was
- 2:52driving for ken tyler with the ford
- 2:54engine
- 2:55and i was walking down the paddock
- 2:58and suddenly i hear this over the public
- 3:01address system will jackie stewart
- 3:04please come to race control now that's
- 3:07bad news for a racing driver because it
- 3:09seems that you've done something bad out
- 3:12there
- 3:12and an official's upset about what you
- 3:15did
- 3:15so i had never been to race control
- 3:18before and i go up the steps to race
- 3:20control go into a room and i said
- 3:22excuse me my name's jackie stewart
- 3:25you've asked me to come to race control
- 3:28yes yes there's somebody wants to meet
- 3:29you
- 3:31and we walked into a room nando i did
- 3:33with this
- 3:34man and there was almost a skeleton
- 3:39of a man your eye lids were
- 3:42not there your nose was hardly there
- 3:44your mouth was hardly in existence
- 3:47you you were this thick in in waist and
- 3:50size
- 3:51and i was of course immediately
- 3:54recognized who it was and was enormously
- 3:58impressed by just absolutely
- 4:02first of all meeting you and that was
- 4:05the beginning of a very deep friendship
- 4:07but nando let let us start with
- 4:10the rugby team and you left montevideo
- 4:14and and let's go to the point where
- 4:18it became a problem up in the air if you
- 4:20don't mind
- 4:23yes i was a member of a rugby team we're
- 4:25going to place
- 4:26to play a game against the chilean
- 4:29national champion at the end of the year
- 4:32in 1972
- 4:33and with my team my
- 4:36family went with other family members of
- 4:39the players
- 4:41and flying over the andes on a very
- 4:44for today's standards a very
- 4:46underpowered
- 4:47airplane it was a fokker f-27 turboprop
- 4:51full of passengers crew cargo it was
- 4:55heavy
- 4:56bad weather flying over the worst place
- 4:58you can fly on those conditions and
- 5:01the crew was not very the pilot and the
- 5:03compiler is very experienced
- 5:05and we hit some turbulence and
- 5:11a few seconds later
- 5:15i am lucky to say that i survived
- 5:17probably the only plane crash in history
- 5:19where the airplane
- 5:21crashes at full speed at cruising
- 5:23altitude against a mountain
- 5:25we crashed at 18 000 feet head on
- 5:28against the mountain
- 5:29um i'm here i'm here so i was very lucky
- 5:32but the plane broke in half
- 5:36half of the people died on the initial
- 5:38impact and then the plane slid down
- 5:41a mountain for about a quarter of a mile
- 5:44until it stopped
- 5:45abruptly like a formula one car hitting
- 5:48head on a wall
- 5:49against the ice on a glacier and
- 5:53that impact also killed more of the
- 5:56players and passengers on the airplane
- 5:59and i survived with
- 6:02injuries in my head i was in a coma for
- 6:06four days and of the 45 people on board
- 6:1029 survived the impact which is a
- 6:13miracle
- 6:15my mother and my sister were flying with
- 6:17me they died on impact
- 6:19and three of my best friends died on
- 6:21impact
- 6:23but that was the only
- 6:27that was a start of a fantastic survival
- 6:30story that
- 6:31lasted for 72 days on the worst place
- 6:34that a human being can
- 6:36survive how long were you on unconscious
- 6:38for nando
- 6:40i was unconscious for four days they
- 6:42thought i was dead i didn't have any
- 6:44vital signs
- 6:45and my head was the size of a basketball
- 6:47so they put me with the dead bodies
- 6:50and four days later somebody saw that my
- 6:52legs were moving and they they picked me
- 6:54up from that hip
- 6:56and i started to come back to my senses
- 6:59and by which time you obviously were
- 7:02told that
- 7:02both your mama and your sister had
- 7:05passed
- 7:07yes when i started to wake up you know
- 7:10sounds and images started dripping into
- 7:12my
- 7:13my brain uh
- 7:16i heard these beautiful voices from my
- 7:18friends and
- 7:20comforting me and saying nando are you
- 7:22okay can you breathe are you okay
- 7:24we crashed you know we crashed but we
- 7:26are going to take care of you
- 7:28and then i asked for my mother and my
- 7:31sister and my friends and they said no
- 7:34they didn't survive they're all dead and
- 7:36that's
- 7:37that's a moment that maybe
- 7:40i i can relate to you jack in many
- 7:44in many ways because when you were
- 7:46racing you
- 7:48i relate my saga to some of the
- 7:52way you were thinking because a lot of
- 7:54your friends died in those days
- 7:56formula one changed a lot so you have to
- 7:59uh separate the
- 8:02thoughts of suffering in order to
- 8:05survive
- 8:06and keep on going and i think that on a
- 8:08racing cars
- 8:10formula one has changed a lot in those
- 8:11days it was different
- 8:13you lost many many dear friends but you
- 8:15kept going
- 8:17i lost very many dear friends and my
- 8:19family
- 8:20and i had to keep going why i don't know
- 8:23i cannot explain it i probably you
- 8:25cannot either explain it
- 8:27it just did no well i had many
- 8:31friends of course who died and some
- 8:33extremely close to me
- 8:35and i i know i was with the open rent
- 8:39when he died
- 8:41um and you know it was a strange thing
- 8:44i think we shared something in this
- 8:48somehow or other within 45 minutes i was
- 8:50back in a racing car
- 8:52and i had never driven faster around
- 8:55monza in my life
- 8:57that then when i did that ken turtle
- 8:59insisted that i get into the car
- 9:0240 minutes after they had repaired the
- 9:04barriers that had been damaged
- 9:06and i had just left the open and he he
- 9:09said
- 9:10you know you've got to get in the car
- 9:11jackie you've got to go out
- 9:13and i went out my second lap i went
- 9:15faster than i've ever been around monza
- 9:17and put myself in second place on the
- 9:19grid
- 9:19with a car that really wasn't that
- 9:21competitive but i was in tears
- 9:25when i got into the cockpit and i was in
- 9:28tears
- 9:28when i came out the cockpit so
- 9:31i was destroyed by it and it still
- 9:34affects me today
- 9:36um because of what happened and it's the
- 9:38same applied
- 9:40you know to all the other drivers who
- 9:42died that i knew so well
- 9:44um but in your particular case it's it's
- 9:47a much bigger thing
- 9:48and you were in an aircraft crash and
- 9:51you had so many people
- 9:53around you who were not only dead but
- 9:55who were dying
- 9:58and you had to survive that nando and
- 10:00you and roberto canessa
- 10:02because roberto became a good friend as
- 10:04well because
- 10:05both of you came to switzerland and to
- 10:08geneva
- 10:09and to our little home at that time and
- 10:12stayed with us for quite a long time so
- 10:14we
- 10:15we built a relationship which might be
- 10:17unique
- 10:18it certainly is for me in the the
- 10:21closeness that we were able to come
- 10:23together with
- 10:24in the knowledge that all three of us
- 10:27had suffered
- 10:28death up close and personal and yet
- 10:31survived
- 10:32and in your particular case both of you
- 10:35became
- 10:36global heroes to the world
- 10:39i mean you went round the world you met
- 10:42all the sort of heads of state
- 10:44did you go to the vatican did you i mean
- 10:47what
- 10:48how did you manage all of that i might
- 10:50want to come back a little bit
- 10:52to just after the accident and when you
- 10:54chose to try and walk out but
- 10:57how did you handle
- 11:01the let's call it the notoriety that you
- 11:04had
- 11:04the the presence you had of having come
- 11:08literally from death
- 11:12to be survived
- 11:16i think uh that my father was a great
- 11:19help he's
- 11:20he was a very pragmatic man
- 11:23and uh when i came back to my normal
- 11:27life after
- 11:28suffering all that ordeal he just came
- 11:31to me and he said nando
- 11:33don't ever look back you're
- 11:36the second part of your only life starts
- 11:39now and you have to live a life you have
- 11:42to live your life
- 11:43and i kept going uh in the same way that
- 11:47i lived before i kept on doing my sports
- 11:51working enjoying life and
- 11:55never had because probably the
- 11:57pragmatism that my father
- 12:00inserted on me i never had like a
- 12:03survivor's guilt that people say you but
- 12:06you survived and your friends
- 12:08died yeah and my family died what can i
- 12:10do
- 12:12i mean the past is you cannot modify the
- 12:15past
- 12:16and the only thing that accounts in
- 12:20in my life is the present because the
- 12:22future is fog it's a dream it's a
- 12:25challenge it's
- 12:26whatever you can call it but the only
- 12:28thing that
- 12:29i have lived through all my life is live
- 12:32the present and you know a few
- 12:36months ago i got together
- 12:39some of my friends that were my friends
- 12:42since my first year in school
- 12:44and i asked them how do you think i was
- 12:48before
- 12:48and i am now and they said you're the
- 12:50same guy the same stupid guy that you
- 12:52were before you're still the same one
- 12:54so i haven't changed people changed
- 12:56towards me
- 12:58so yes but but i i take you back
- 13:02to the andes i mean and you're coming
- 13:04round from unconsciousness
- 13:06and within how many days from you
- 13:09becoming conscious was it
- 13:11that you and roberto had the courage to
- 13:15to to take off to walk across
- 13:18mountains with avalanches around you
- 13:21which affected you all
- 13:23and how do you just give me a little
- 13:26feeling at that time
- 13:28with death surrounding you and
- 13:31continuously happening at that time
- 13:34to to make that move to make a decision
- 13:37to take a challenge on to an area that
- 13:39you didn't even know
- 13:41which direction to go to in some respect
- 13:45[Music]
- 13:47i knew when i came back to my senses uh
- 13:49almost instantly that we were doomed
- 13:51there was no hope because we heard on a
- 13:54small transistor radio
- 13:55that the search had been called off
- 13:57after 10 days of searching
- 13:59there's no way we could find wreckage of
- 14:02the airplane
- 14:02or survivors the rescuers
- 14:07said you know the air force that were
- 14:08looking for us and the rescuers
- 14:10they abandoned the search so i knew then
- 14:12that i was dead
- 14:13at that moment i said i'm not dead i'm
- 14:15breathing
- 14:17i will try whatever i can to get out of
- 14:19the of here but we were
- 14:21stranded in the middle of the andes so
- 14:23it took us two months
- 14:25there two months to wait for the actual
- 14:28good day to go out because we had to
- 14:31wait
- 14:32for the good weather to arrive the
- 14:34summer
- 14:35we were dressed with summer clothes how
- 14:37could we attempt
- 14:38climbing 18 000 feet on summer clothes
- 14:41and people were still
- 14:43dying during that period
- 14:46yes 29 survived the
- 14:49initial crashes because we had the first
- 14:52impact the second impact
- 14:54sliding down the mountain 29 survived
- 14:56but at the end
- 14:57only 16 came out because people died of
- 15:00wounds
- 15:01gangrene you know infections
- 15:04and you're
- 15:08dying every minute there i lost almost
- 15:1290 pounds so you
- 15:15die and die a little bit every day but
- 15:17with roberto he said
- 15:18i told him roberto look at them look at
- 15:22they are dying and we are dying because
- 15:24we are the same we are exactly the same
- 15:25we have to get out of here
- 15:27come with me please come with me because
- 15:29i cannot do it alone
- 15:30we are going to die and i said we're
- 15:32going to die here
- 15:34definitely maybe we have a slight chance
- 15:37so come with me please
- 15:39and we waited two months to make the
- 15:41final decision
- 15:42two months two months two months in hell
- 15:45two months in a frozen hell i mean
- 15:48people think of hell with fire i can
- 15:51tell you it's with uh ice and snow
- 15:56locked inside a small piece of the
- 15:59fuselage
- 16:00about six meters by two and a half
- 16:03meters
- 16:0429 guys were living inside that for
- 16:08until some of them kept dying and kept
- 16:10dying and you ask yourselves
- 16:11when will it be my turn when will i die
- 16:15and uh i said it was not me today
- 16:20were any of the girls still alive any of
- 16:23the ladies still alive
- 16:25no there were only four girls on the
- 16:28whole
- 16:28plane and they didn't survive because
- 16:31only a
- 16:32mathematical issue there were very
- 16:35few girls and
- 16:37[Music]
- 16:38three of them died on impact and one
- 16:40died
- 16:41when the avalanche hit us because we
- 16:44also had an avalanche that killed
- 16:46nine of us so it was a very complicated
- 16:50situation indeed so
- 16:53you then decided to walk out after how
- 16:56many days
- 16:5861 days there after 61 days
- 17:02i said roberto roberto i'm going
- 17:04tomorrow
- 17:06i'm going i'm leaving because
- 17:09uh there's no way we will live
- 17:13here for more than three or three more
- 17:15weeks
- 17:17three more weeks will be the limit why
- 17:19because we're surviving
- 17:20on the worst way a human being can
- 17:22survive
- 17:24over there it's like being in mars venus
- 17:26or the moon
- 17:28there's nothing absolutely nothing
- 17:31and we have to survive
- 17:35on the dead bodies of our friends which
- 17:38is
- 17:38something people cannot
- 17:42rely to but being the most important
- 17:46experts on this subject in the world i
- 17:49can tell you that every single person
- 17:52in the world who had been there with us
- 17:55would have achieved the same thought and
- 17:57the same
- 17:58acts at the same time and
- 18:02i knew i told roberto look we don't have
- 18:04any more bodies
- 18:06what will happen here i won't be here
- 18:09i'll be climbing these mountains or
- 18:10dying
- 18:11on a crevasse but i won't die here
- 18:14looking at your eyes
- 18:15mine said you're right let's go tomorrow
- 18:18and that's what we did so so you
- 18:21had already lost so much weight nando
- 18:23and obviously
- 18:24roberto must have lost a lot of weight
- 18:26as well so you didn't have
- 18:28what your normal strengths would be as
- 18:30young strong
- 18:31rugby players but the fact that you were
- 18:34strong
- 18:34rugby players probably had more
- 18:37determination
- 18:38and and i don't know just playing guts
- 18:41but
- 18:43how long was the walk try and tell these
- 18:46nice people who are seeing this
- 18:47now who you know many of them much
- 18:50younger
- 18:51and don't know this whole story i mean
- 18:54from from leaving the the crashed
- 18:56aircraft
- 18:58how long did it take and well i can tell
- 19:01you that
- 19:02we had a map and we thought that we were
- 19:05close to a town in because of the time
- 19:08the plane had flown and the altitude and
- 19:10the headwind we made a lot of
- 19:11calculations
- 19:13but one of the items from this equation
- 19:14was wrong direction of the flight
- 19:16instead of flying west the plane had
- 19:18long south so instead of being we
- 19:21thought we were about eight
- 19:22miles from a town we were almost 100
- 19:26miles
- 19:26from a town 100 times and i thought i
- 19:29would reach that town in
- 19:31one day one day and a half when we left
- 19:34the fuselage
- 19:36so the day we left with roberto
- 19:39uh we climbed and climbed we had we were
- 19:41on a bowl we had to climb
- 19:43all the way up to 18 000 feet without
- 19:46gloves
- 19:47without crampons without anything and on
- 19:50one of the
- 19:51most incredible mountain traverse
- 19:53histories
- 19:55in the history of mountaineering i don't
- 19:57say that all the climbers say that
- 20:00we achieve something that's not human we
- 20:02cross the whole
- 20:03and this mountains in ten and a half
- 20:06days
- 20:07in ten and a half days
- 20:10with very little with very little
- 20:12clothes on and certainly not
- 20:15mounted shoes on no i had my rugby boots
- 20:18on
- 20:19and i had two jeans i had a
- 20:23a t-shirt two shirts a sweater and a
- 20:26very light jacket
- 20:27that's my mountaineering
- 20:30climbing gear and a small piece of
- 20:33aluminium aluminum that i used as a
- 20:36you know to help me walk on the ice and
- 20:39on the snow
- 20:40i had lost up to then about i would say
- 20:4460 65 pounds we were rugby players i was
- 20:48a second row player
- 20:50but as you say this is mind over matter
- 20:53there's no way when i look back that
- 20:57i could have achieved that there's no
- 20:59way
- 21:00the only thing that made me go forward
- 21:03when i was dying because i kept dying
- 21:06every minute on every climb on every
- 21:08step
- 21:10is was going back to embrace my father
- 21:14and i said he is back home having lost
- 21:18his family and i'm alive he was my
- 21:21lighthouse
- 21:22and i kept thinking about him kept
- 21:24thinking about him and
- 21:26that gave me a lot of strength and then
- 21:29roberto's book which i
- 21:31just mentioned i have read for the first
- 21:33time because he gave it to me
- 21:34that night i was with you when you had
- 21:36that nice dinner party and you came up
- 21:38to give it you know to me and give them
- 21:40a big hug because
- 21:42just the two of you so many years ago
- 21:44meeting for that first time and
- 21:46and his words in it i mean
- 21:51i've i had tears of
- 21:55what was going on at that time i mean
- 22:00the number of times you both must have
- 22:02been so weak
- 22:04with the storms that come into a
- 22:05mountain of that altitude
- 22:08and the avalanches that were surrounding
- 22:10you and
- 22:11somehow or other you both kept alive in
- 22:14such
- 22:14poor conditions and yet
- 22:17it was almost a miracle you're with us
- 22:21today
- 22:24it's a miracle we made a fantastic team
- 22:27um i wouldn't have made it without him
- 22:31and he wouldn't have made it without me
- 22:34i i was like uh
- 22:38trained trying to get as fast as i could
- 22:41as far away as i could
- 22:44very very fast and he was slow and he
- 22:46was like a clutch
- 22:48keep taking care of me and not letting
- 22:51me
- 22:52burn myself out alone i would have
- 22:55killed myself
- 22:56i would have killed myself because i
- 22:58never stopped
- 22:59and he was a little bit more tired
- 23:03and that was very good because we had to
- 23:05stop we could walk
- 23:06for 10 15 hours 10 15 hours non-stop
- 23:10and then stop and rest for one hour and
- 23:12two hours and then we kept going day and
- 23:14night
- 23:14day and night and we were blessed with
- 23:17the
- 23:17good weather because had we had a
- 23:20blizzard or a storm i wouldn't be here
- 23:23but um there are no words that i can
- 23:27have in my vocabulary to express
- 23:31how difficult that was
- 23:35i looked back and i said i i think it
- 23:36was not me it was not me
- 23:39and then suddenly after all those days
- 23:43of walking you saw green grass
- 23:48yeah we we came back to after seven and
- 23:51a half days
- 23:52the the snow ended
- 23:56so we walked about two more days
- 23:59on rocks and shale rocks and then
- 24:01suddenly in between the rocks some grass
- 24:03and flowers started to appear
- 24:05and that was like a fresh uh
- 24:10strong feeling that we were getting
- 24:12closer to
- 24:13some life
- 24:16in a very remote area very very remote
- 24:19area i mean
- 24:21no human beings have ever been there
- 24:24have ever been there i think we were the
- 24:26first to see those flowers and
- 24:28uh in in that altitude in those
- 24:31mountains we
- 24:32never reached the tree level ever but
- 24:35as soon as we saw something green we say
- 24:37okay
- 24:38we are getting closer to life we are
- 24:40getting closer to life
- 24:41and that gave us strength and we kept
- 24:44going we kept going
- 24:46does grass does grass taste good
- 24:50what does grass taste good
- 24:53good no i mean flowers roberto ate
- 24:57one of the flowers roberto one of them
- 24:59have flowers and
- 25:01they don't taste very very good and
- 25:04finally
- 25:05you you finally you you you saw a human
- 25:10yes after 10 10 days
- 25:14at the end of the 10th day
- 25:18we were almost at the end of our
- 25:22strength mental strength because
- 25:25physical strength we didn't have anymore
- 25:27we didn't have any more physicals
- 25:30roberto was sitting on a
- 25:34stone on a rock looking to the north and
- 25:37i was looking to the west
- 25:39the sun was setting on the horizon with
- 25:42the mountains
- 25:44and then roberto shouts i see a man a
- 25:47man
- 25:47a man on a horse and i look and i turn
- 25:50around
- 25:51and about 400 yards away on a
- 25:55across a river we saw a man on a horse
- 25:58silently going back high on a horse so
- 26:01you can imagine that we started shouting
- 26:03and shouting and shouting and then the
- 26:05horseman stops the horse
- 26:08and starts to look at us and
- 26:11that was the first link
- 26:14the first link that we had with
- 26:16salvation
- 26:17is another horse who was a best friend
- 26:21so i i ran towards the
- 26:24river it was a river that was about 25
- 26:28yards
- 26:28wide and i started shouting this man but
- 26:32he couldn't
- 26:33understand because of the sound of the
- 26:35water
- 26:37you would not have a strong voice either
- 26:40yeah
- 26:41he he he didn't have a clue who we were
- 26:44he didn't
- 26:45he later told us that he couldn't
- 26:47imagine
- 26:48what two guys were doing so high up in
- 26:50the mountains alone
- 26:51on foot and we communicated
- 26:55this was a very uh a guy with a lot of
- 26:58common sense
- 26:59he threw a stone with a piece of paper
- 27:02around it with a pencil and a string so
- 27:06i wrote a message there
- 27:08i come from a plane that crashes in the
- 27:10mountains i am uruguayan
- 27:12i have 14 french wounded on the airplane
- 27:14i need help
- 27:15where are we please help and i threw it
- 27:18back to him and
- 27:20he reads that gets some cheese and bread
- 27:23shows it across the river and says okay
- 27:26now wait
- 27:27wait there and he went to look for some
- 27:30help
- 27:30who was 10 hours away so he come back
- 27:34he comes back the next day so we had to
- 27:37wait all that night with roberto there
- 27:39wondering if he was going to come back
- 27:42we assumed
- 27:43that he was going to come back
- 27:47so i and that was jackie that was
- 27:50december 21
- 27:541972 december 21 1972
- 27:58on january 14th the formula one grand
- 28:01prix of argentina was going to take
- 28:03place
- 28:05every year for every year i had been to
- 28:08the former one grand prix in argentina
- 28:10every year
- 28:11from all the previous years even with my
- 28:15father and my
- 28:16friends so when i came back to uruguay
- 28:19uh five days later i said why shouldn't
- 28:22i go to a formula one grand prix
- 28:26that's what i love that's what i like i
- 28:28mean i'm alive
- 28:29and that's why i went to argentina with
- 28:32my friends
- 28:34and uh i had i i want to be very honest
- 28:38i had two formula one posters in my room
- 28:42tim clark and jackie stewart you know
- 28:45she had good tips
- 28:50and when i was there i knew some of the
- 28:53organizers and i said
- 28:54is there any way i can meet jackie i
- 28:58don't know he's very
- 28:59you know very very important man driver
- 29:03he's
- 29:03racing very concentrated i don't know
- 29:07i don't know how they embraced that and
- 29:11i think that was a first
- 29:15part of this beautiful friendship story
- 29:18because you invited me to the
- 29:22peace and you showed me the cars and
- 29:24everything
- 29:25and in one of your worst moments
- 29:28the next day you say if you ever come to
- 29:30europe come and visit us
- 29:34and you didn't know whom you were
- 29:35talking so
- 29:38when i went to europe i rang you up
- 29:42and you said why don't you come and stay
- 29:43with us here for a few days
- 29:45and that's what i mean and here we are
- 29:48and
- 29:49a few days went to a few more days to a
- 29:51few more days
- 29:52and it was fantastic i mean and
- 29:55and you behaved so beautifully both of
- 29:58you
- 29:59and paul and mark were very young i mean
- 30:02here's paul now what is it 53 years of
- 30:04age
- 30:05and and and to this day yuri's greatest
- 30:08hero
- 30:09but not just that the fact that you both
- 30:12were just such good friends to have
- 30:15because
- 30:16occasionally you went off actually to to
- 30:18do appearances or engagements and came
- 30:21back and stayed and so forth and you
- 30:23were there for quite a long time
- 30:25so it was a great relationship and of
- 30:28course your motor racing
- 30:30then became quite an important part of
- 30:32your life because
- 30:33you were a good driver you went to jim
- 30:36russell driving school i remember that
- 30:38just because you wanted to drive a
- 30:40single seater at schneiderton
- 30:42um and of course later on you even went
- 30:46and raced at the nurburgring which is
- 30:48as difficult to race track at that time
- 30:51as there was
- 30:52in the world 14.7 miles around 187
- 30:56corners per lap and you've been there
- 30:59you've done that
- 31:00now some people might say that you're
- 31:03just a risk taker
- 31:05having coming out of a terrible accident
- 31:08like you came out of and now you were
- 31:10driving racing cars not
- 31:12very sensible
- 31:15well yeah a lot of people ask me that
- 31:18and they say
- 31:19you thought you were immortal you could
- 31:21do anything and say no no no
- 31:23by all means don't don't
- 31:26think i'm i i'm a dirty or anything i
- 31:29i'm
- 31:30i i have fears i'm very afraid sometimes
- 31:33i'm very good
- 31:34hiding my fears but i'm afraid and
- 31:38racing cars my father was the founder he
- 31:41he
- 31:41created the uruguayan racing drivers
- 31:44club
- 31:45you know that's a fantastic romantic
- 31:48name you know
- 31:48in the 1940s so i was
- 31:52born into the racing scene and the smell
- 31:54and the sound
- 31:56and i loved racing but i've been there
- 31:58doing it i was
- 31:59i was afraid all the racing drivers were
- 32:02my heroes and
- 32:03how do they do that you know and then i
- 32:06almost died
- 32:07and i came back and i said what was the
- 32:09thing that i
- 32:11loved more and i didn't do
- 32:15before and now that i have a second
- 32:18birth i should do and i say i should
- 32:21start racing
- 32:22and i started racing and i loved it
- 32:27and uh i went to a dream russell's
- 32:29racing driver school i took instructors
- 32:31here
- 32:32jackie taught me a lot and i became
- 32:35i was very very good very good but i was
- 32:38not exceptional
- 32:39you know i was pretty good i was going
- 32:42to
- 32:43join the team i was very good
- 32:47but uh i all also raised for the alfa
- 32:50romeo factory team the
- 32:52on the european touring car championship
- 32:55and there was another driver in my team
- 32:57who was always
- 32:59a tenth or faster than i was on the same
- 33:02day on the same car
- 33:03and everything and i was and i couldn't
- 33:06do it
- 33:07so i was very good but i was not
- 33:10you know etc and you've been in the
- 33:13desert as well driving
- 33:15yeah i i did some i crossed the
- 33:19sahara desert and with
- 33:23an event created by a
- 33:27car manufacturer i spent almost
- 33:3020 days crossing the sahara desert and
- 33:34i raised motorcycles i won the south
- 33:36american motocross championship in 1975
- 33:40then i started racing cars and i raced
- 33:44uh boats so everything that had an
- 33:47engine
- 33:48you know how it feels like no jackie
- 33:51i've forgotten
- 33:54and what about i remember we went to
- 33:56monte carlo together to the grand prix
- 33:59yeah i i i couldn't believe that
- 34:02i've been there with you a few times and
- 34:07it's like memories of a fantastic
- 34:10movie of my life you know i
- 34:14i i leave those things
- 34:18in honor of all the people and all my
- 34:20friends who would
- 34:21love to leave those things is there
- 34:24anything
- 34:26anything better for a formula one
- 34:29fan or to go to monte carlo staying at
- 34:32the hotel paris
- 34:34sharing the room with jackie stewart i
- 34:36mean
- 34:37is there anything better and
- 34:40my wife veronique we have enjoyed those
- 34:44things
- 34:45more than anything in our lives and
- 34:47those are memories
- 34:48life is to create memories because
- 34:51that's the only thing we take away
- 34:54well we both have memories and we're
- 34:56both
- 34:57lucky to be here and so many of your
- 35:00friends are no longer with us and so
- 35:02many of my friends are sadly no longer
- 35:05with us for the same reasons and where
- 35:07they are in the same place perhaps i
- 35:09hope
- 35:10but nando you've met so many people
- 35:13around the world
- 35:15because of a life because of the film
- 35:18but more i think from the book but the
- 35:22media
- 35:22attention that you got because of being
- 35:26surviving
- 35:27in such circumstances for so long with
- 35:30so many people dying
- 35:32friends mothers sisters
- 35:35deep friends dying that
- 35:39had to have some effect on hernandez
- 35:42surely i mean you you man
- 35:44you're a man of great strength and that
- 35:47still stands today because of your
- 35:49business life and so forth but
- 35:52you met all of these heads of state and
- 35:55all of these kings and queens and the
- 35:57princess grace and prince albert and
- 35:59prince
- 36:01of monaco when we were there for the
- 36:03grand prix and they were
- 36:05more pleased to see you than you were to
- 36:08see them
- 36:08i mean they told me that
- 36:12so you must have made a lot of very good
- 36:15friendships
- 36:16along the world around the world for all
- 36:19those years
- 36:23yes i i am blessed with opportunities
- 36:27with having met very powerful people
- 36:30interesting people and
- 36:34i'm not a man of
- 36:38many many words and my wife always says
- 36:41how can you
- 36:42sometimes give a conference if your iq
- 36:45is so low
- 36:46oh that's a that's a way of speaking
- 36:51but i i have to sincerely say
- 36:54that if i look back in my life
- 36:59in friendship and in feelings and what
- 37:02have
- 37:03happened in my life looking at you
- 37:06looking at the stuart family at
- 37:08helen the way you received me and gave
- 37:10me
- 37:12a house and they opened a door
- 37:15to a life that i wouldn't have achieved
- 37:18if i hadn't met you why do i say that
- 37:22because in all my business life
- 37:25in all my racing life not my racing
- 37:28team's life
- 37:30i have copied you i have adapted things
- 37:33that you did
- 37:34looking for excellence because if you do
- 37:38excellence you get things back in a
- 37:41better way
- 37:43i remember you in your formula one team
- 37:47putting the tracks on jacks so that
- 37:51entires would have all the good year
- 37:53you know logos on the same size on the
- 37:55same place
- 37:57and i did that on my racing teams
- 38:00you know sponsorship public relations
- 38:05uh business-wise a handshake
- 38:09stronger than anything even any contract
- 38:13you can do a thick contract like this i
- 38:15give a handshake
- 38:17nothing can break that and i have
- 38:19learned that from you jackie
- 38:21i have learned that from you and without
- 38:24knowing i have adapted your way of life
- 38:29i'm sorry if i did that i i
- 38:33i i'm sorry but i have to say
- 38:37well nando it's been a fantastic
- 38:42friendship you are one of
- 38:46for me the greatest man that's ever
- 38:47lived because you've
- 38:49died almost and lived with so much
- 38:53strength energy and commitment
- 38:56and you've become now a very successful
- 39:00businessman because you've survived
- 39:02something that you
- 39:04would go into business with the same
- 39:06commitment the same drive
- 39:08the same enthusiasm and the same fear
- 39:12of failing and in that case we were very
- 39:15similar
- 39:16in in many ways uh so nando
- 39:19your veronique and your children and
- 39:22here have i
- 39:23only in recent years had the chance to
- 39:25come to uruguay to see you and
- 39:28when you brought me to your various
- 39:30friends during that visit
- 39:31i was so impressed the love
- 39:35and the respect that they have for you
- 39:39after all those years since that
- 39:42terrible accident occurred
- 39:43is still magnetic it's fantastic
- 39:47so nando i thank you and helen
- 39:51too because you know helen's not well
- 39:53and she's got dementia
- 39:56she knows that i'm speaking with you
- 39:57today and she wants to send a very big
- 39:59kiss to you
- 40:01and she loves you as deeply as i do
- 40:04uh and you know when i see you with
- 40:07veronique with the
- 40:08with your family i see almost a mirror
- 40:12of what it was for me there was early
- 40:15years of you children growing up
- 40:17and when i saw all of these people with
- 40:19the huge respect for you
- 40:21when you took me around and next to many
- 40:23of your friends
- 40:24it just gave me a big
- 40:28lump in my throat you're one of the
- 40:32greatest
- 40:32public speakers that exists and you
- 40:34probably only do five or six
- 40:37speeches a year around the world so
- 40:40the respect that they have for you
- 40:41hernando i think
- 40:44cannot be more than i have for you and i
- 40:47i can't tell you how much i appreciate
- 40:49the fact that you've
- 40:50agreed to talk me through some the
- 40:54terrible times
- 40:55of your life but here we are both of us
- 40:57together
- 40:58and still feeling as strongly as we were
- 41:02and the very day that i met you for the
- 41:03first time was the day my father
- 41:06died and that
- 41:09just was a terrible coincidence if you
- 41:12like
- 41:13but i'll never forget it for for that
- 41:16combination of seeing you in the state
- 41:19that you were nando
- 41:21and then having the bad news come so
- 41:25we've come to the end of our little talk
- 41:28together
- 41:30i thank you enormously for agreeing to
- 41:33do it
- 41:34i can't wait to catch up with you again
- 41:37and if there is a grand prix
- 41:40down that way at all you're going to
- 41:42have another
- 41:43person to accommodate that lovely room
- 41:45that i slept in the last time nando
- 41:49what can i say a very big thank you
- 41:53thank you jackie a big big big warm
- 41:56embrace
- 41:57to you and helen and you know paul and
- 42:00mark
- 42:01their families when i think
- 42:04of a family that is not my
- 42:08blood family but is my family i think of
- 42:12the stewards
- 42:13and i remember that day when i put my
- 42:16first step on
- 42:17clayton house in switzerland
- 42:20a new life started and it's thanks to
- 42:23the
- 42:23kindness and humility and the way you
- 42:27received us and gave us always every
- 42:30time we see you
- 42:31show friendship and that's one of the
- 42:33most incredible things that
- 42:35i i have and i i always have
- 42:39in my wrist here a watch that says
- 42:42to nando with love from the stewart
- 42:45family
- 42:48that's very nice it's engraved and it
- 42:50says
- 42:52with love from the stuart family what
- 42:54can i say jackie
- 42:56thank you very much one more thing that
- 42:59i'll say
- 43:00that people watching this would will
- 43:03have to have emotion for
- 43:05when you left the last time from clayton
- 43:07house not
- 43:08the last time that worked together but
- 43:10when you left clayton house with roberto
- 43:12and
- 43:13moved on you did something
- 43:16that we still talk about you took
- 43:20the chain from your neck
- 43:23that was your mother's and give it to
- 43:25paul
- 43:26[Music]
- 43:29that's special
- 43:32yeah that uh i got a
- 43:36bond with your boys they i looked at
- 43:39them when i was there and i i
