  1. 0:06now carbon neutral seems to be the buzz
  2. 0:09phrase of the moment especially when it
  3. 0:11comes to the design and construction of
  4. 0:12new buildings and nowhere more so than
  5. 0:14here in melbourne where the pixel
  6. 0:16building has recently been completed
  7. 0:17it's the world's first carbon neutral
  8. 0:19commercial building now to find out more
  9. 0:22we're here to have a chat to dylan brady
  10. 0:23the director and architect at studio
  11. 0:26505.
  12. 0:27can you tell us a little bit about what
  13. 0:29studio 505 does and the input that you
  14. 0:32guys had into the pixel project dirk
  15. 0:34zimmerman is our business partner we met
  16. 0:36working on federation square i cole
  17. 0:38called david waldron for about four
  18. 0:41months david waldron's the general
  19. 0:42manager of the carlton united brewery
  20. 0:44project and he really liked all of the
  21. 0:46crazy stuff that he saw but there was
  22. 0:48this funny little nipple of land left
  23. 0:49over next to the cleaning store that had
  24. 0:51a right-of-way at the back of it that
  25. 0:52they couldn't excavate because it's only
  26. 0:55you know nine metres but and daniel
  27. 0:58growly said well why don't we build a
  28. 0:59building on there that's a little
  29. 1:01prototype building that we make as green
  30. 1:02as we can and we'll put our development
  31. 1:04office in it and i want 505 to do it so
  32. 1:07we didn't have to do a competition for
  33. 1:08it they just said look
  34. 1:10i want you to be these the architects
  35. 1:11for this which they classified as a very
  36. 1:13boring building construction of the
  37. 1:15pixel building carried a six million
  38. 1:17dollar price tag now 1.5 million of that
  39. 1:20was used on innovation to achieve their
  40. 1:22perfect green star score
  41. 1:25the facade
  42. 1:26on the outside has two primary functions
  43. 1:30the first function is the scientific
  44. 1:31function under
  45. 1:33green star there's a number of points to
  46. 1:35do with glare daylight control
  47. 1:38shade views to the outside you can't
  48. 1:40build a building with this kind of
  49. 1:42aspiration and put it on the corner of
  50. 1:43that site and make it invisible and
  51. 1:45what's been great about the facade and
  52. 1:46the colors and the flow and all of that
  53. 1:48sort of stuff is that it's so wacky and
  54. 1:49so out there and people are like wow i
  55. 1:51don't know what it is but i really love
  56. 1:52it you can you just give us a rundown on
  57. 1:54a few of the big ticket items inside a
  58. 1:56lot of the technology is to do with
  59. 1:58energy and then water right so the two
  60. 2:01primary kind of
  61. 2:02things that we're dealing with in the
  62. 2:04building um now from the energy point of
  63. 2:06view we've obviously got vertical access
  64. 2:08wind turbines there we also have solar
  65. 2:10panels on the roof which is a second
  66. 2:11primary kind of energy source we
  67. 2:13generate a lot more from our wind
  68. 2:15turbines than we do from our solar
  69. 2:16panels there's an italian chiller called
  70. 2:18a robu unit which has got an ammonia
  71. 2:21base it's a natural gas chiller rain
  72. 2:22water collection on the green roof so we
  73. 2:24collect that water we filter it in we
  74. 2:27put it into a giant tank in the ground
  75. 2:28and then we filter it back up to potable
  76. 2:30standard so we can deliver it to the
  77. 2:32showers and to the basins and to the
  78. 2:34toilets the water that we flush down the
  79. 2:36toilets we only use about a 20th of the
  80. 2:38normal amount of water that you would
  81. 2:39use because we've got a vacuum toilet
  82. 2:40system
  83. 2:42i use it in aeroplanes they use it in
  84. 2:44boats why do they use it in airplanes
  85. 2:46and boats so they don't have to carry a
  86. 2:48lot of water so they don't have to hold
  87. 2:50a lot of water
  88. 2:51it's a technology that we should be
  89. 2:53using all over the place because for the
  90. 2:55power input and the water saving
  91. 2:58it's vastly vast improvement am i going
  92. 3:00to notice any difference
  93. 3:02to my office surroundings uh it can be
  94. 3:05completely invisible
  95. 3:07it can be completely invisible you could
  96. 3:09not notice if you in particular feel
  97. 3:12cooler or warmer than the person who's
  98. 3:14next to you you've got capacity to
  99. 3:16actually adjust your local condition in
  100. 3:18a way that that you don't in a
  101. 3:20traditional office all right now this is
  102. 3:21the exciting bit we are here at pixel
  103. 3:23let's go and take a look
  104. 3:29so we've heard a lot about this baby
  105. 3:31it's the anaerobic digester this is the
  106. 3:34vacuum generator for the vacuum toilet
  107. 3:36system
  108. 3:37and that sewer waste comes in here it's
  109. 3:39basically macerated it's sent back up
  110. 3:41this pipe and into this tank there's a
  111. 3:44biodegrading process that happens in
  112. 3:46here that's about a month cycle and what
  113. 3:49we do is we harvest off the top of this
  114. 3:51methane gas and then pipe up to the top
  115. 3:54of the building and
  116. 3:56heat our hot water
  117. 3:57with so this is basically a big tank a
  118. 3:59giant slurpee machine with a flavor that
  119. 4:02you really just can't match
  120. 4:04you got it
  121. 4:06we've got solar wind
  122. 4:09spare ones lift we can see how much
  123. 4:11energy is being used and being generated
  124. 4:13in hindsight is there anything that you
  125. 4:16would have done differently with this
  126. 4:17project
  127. 4:18i probably would have put made my fees a
  128. 4:21little higher
  129. 4:24but i think that i think that overall
  130. 4:26it's been a it's been a pretty good job
  131. 4:29i mean it looks
  132. 4:30like our renderings and you know what
  133. 4:32what more can you ask for the proof is
  134. 4:34when there are 80 people in it and
  135. 4:35they're working and at the end of the
  136. 4:36year of working there are they better
  137. 4:39are they happier
  138. 4:40is the work been as good if not better
  139. 4:44or have has there been some difficulties
  140. 4:47and it's actually going to be about the
  141. 4:49managing to understand and and kind of
  142. 4:53work with the the users that's going to
  143. 4:56give it a real key
