  1. 0:00What is a medallion architecture? A
  2. 0:02medallion architecture is a modern data
  3. 0:04design pattern used in lake house
  4. 0:05systems in order to organize and
  5. 0:07transform data in a structured and
  6. 0:09progressive way. The core idea is that
  7. 0:11data moves through three logical layers,
  8. 0:14bronze, silver, and gold, where each
  9. 0:16layer improves the quality, structure,
  10. 0:19and usability of the data. Instead of
  11. 0:21treating all data the same, this
  12. 0:22approach ensures that the raw data is
  13. 0:24first captured, refined, and finally
  14. 0:26transformed into a business-ready
  15. 0:28insights that can drive reporting,
  16. 0:31analytics, or decision making. The
  17. 0:32journey begins with bronze layer where
  18. 0:34the data is ingested from various source
  19. 0:37systems such as the databases,
  20. 0:39applications, or APIs in its raw and
  21. 0:41unprocessed form. At this stage, the
  22. 0:43structure of data closely mirrors the
  23. 0:45source system and minimal
  24. 0:47transformations are applied. The main
  25. 0:49purpose of this layer is to ensure
  26. 0:50complete data capture, maintain
  27. 0:52historical records, and enable
  28. 0:53traceability. It also stores important
  29. 0:55metadata like ingestion timestamp, load
  30. 0:58details, which helps in auditing and
  31. 1:00reprocessing if needed. In simple terms,
  32. 1:02bronze layer acts as a reliable raw data
  33. 1:05repository. Once the data is stored in
  34. 1:07bronze layer, it moves into silver layer
  35. 1:09where the real transformation begins.
  36. 1:11Here, the data is cleaned, standardized,
  37. 1:14deduplicated, and combined from multiple
  38. 1:16sources in order to get a consistent and
  39. 1:18trustworthy data set. This layer focuses
  40. 1:21on resolving data quality issues and
  41. 1:23building a more unified and enterprise
  42. 1:25view of key business entities such as
  43. 1:27customers, products, and transactions.
  44. 1:29The silver layer is mainly used by data
  45. 1:30engineers, analysts, and data scientists
  46. 1:33because it provides a clean and reliable
  47. 1:35data for further analysis. Finally, the
  48. 1:37data reaches to the gold layer which is
  49. 1:39the most refined and business-focused
  50. 1:41stage of the architecture. In this
  51. 1:43layer, data is structured specifically
  52. 1:44for reporting, dashboards, and advanced
  53. 1:46analytics use cases. It is often highly
  54. 1:49aggregated and modeled in a way that
  55. 1:51reduces complexity, typically using star
  56. 1:53schema or data mart designs. Gold layer
  57. 1:55is where business users interact with
  58. 1:57data to generate insights for areas like
  59. 1:59sales performance, customer behavior,
  60. 2:01operational efficiency, or financial
  61. 2:03reporting. It is optimized for fast
  62. 2:05querying and decision making, making it
  63. 2:07the final and the most valuable output
  64. 2:09of the entire pipeline. Overall,
  65. 2:11Matillion architecture ensures that the
  66. 2:13data is systematically improved as it
  67. 2:15flows through each layer, transforming
  68. 2:17from raw ingestion to actionable
  69. 2:19intelligence. This approach not only
  70. 2:20improves data quality and governance,
  71. 2:22but also makes data systems more
  72. 2:24actionable, scalable, maintainable, and
  73. 2:27efficient for modern analytics needs. If
  74. 2:29you found this useful, stay tuned.
