- 0:00Getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over
- 0:02the sea and [music] came to his own
- 0:04city.
- 0:06So, he's just left the city of the
- 0:08Gatherines where he's performed the most
- 0:11powerful, shocking miracle.
- 0:14Demon-possessed [music] guys who lived
- 0:17among the tombs and everyone avoided
- 0:20have just been completely restored to
- 0:22their right mind. And the town does not
- 0:24come out with a bouquet or ask him to
- 0:26preach on Sunday. They beg him to leave
- 0:31because people are more afraid of the
- 0:34power and authority of God and his word
- 0:37[music] than they are the demons that
- 0:40live in their town.
- 0:43Getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over
- 0:45the sea and came to his own city.
- 0:49And they brought to him a paralytic
- 0:51[music] lying on a bed.
- 0:53Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the
- 0:56paralytic, "Take courage, son. Your sins
- 1:00are forgiven."
- 1:02And some of the scribes said to
- 1:04themselves,
- 1:06"This fellow blasphemes."
- 1:09And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said,
- 1:11"Why are you thinking evil in your
- 1:13hearts?"
- 1:15Which is easier, to say, "Your sins are
- 1:18forgiven," or to say, "Get up and walk."
- 1:21but so that you may know that the Son of
- 1:23Man has authority on earth to forgive
- 1:25sins.
- 1:27Then he said to the paralytic, "Get up,
- 1:30pick up your bed, and go home." And he
- 1:33got up and went home. But when the crowd
- 1:35saw this, they were aruck and glorified
- 1:38God who had given such authority to men.
- 1:43So let's think about what's what we just
- 1:45read.
- 1:46Jesus encounters a man
- 1:49and he shows us that the purpose of the
- 1:51miracle is to reveal who he is.
- 1:56And the scribes say that he's committed
- 1:59blasphemy when he says your sins are
- 2:01forgiven because they say only God can
- 2:04forgive sins. Is that true? Yes, that is
- 2:06true. But what they can't get their
- 2:09minds around is that they are
- 2:11encountering God. that this is God in
- 2:13the flesh. And the miracle is not for
- 2:17its own sake. It is so that they may
- 2:20know that the son of man has power to
- 2:23forgive sins. So that they may know that
- 2:26the son of man has authority on earth to
- 2:30unbind people from the spiritual bondage
- 2:34that is oppressing them. Whether it's a
- 2:36demon possession as in the previous
- 2:38chapter or it's sin. Jesus looked at
- 2:42this man on the pallet and he was more
- 2:45concerned about the bondage of his soul
- 2:48in sin than the bondage of his body in
- 2:51paralysis.
- 2:53But the beauty is Jesus calls him son.
- 2:59We love to think of Jesus as son because
- 3:02he was God's son but he was also as a
- 3:06father and he had 12 disciples like
- 3:11Israel had 12 sons
- 3:14and he was looking for a relationship to
- 3:17father people in the grace of God. And
- 3:20so when he saw this paralytic, he says
- 3:24something that this paralytic gets to
- 3:26hear from his ears that we don't see
- 3:28almost anywhere else in scripture. He
- 3:30calls the man son. This next section
- 3:33we're going to hear where Matthew talks
- 3:36about himself. Okay? But listen to how
- 3:39little ego Matthew weaves into the
- 3:43story.
- 3:45As Jesus went on from there, he saw a
- 3:48man called Matthew
- 3:51sitting in the tax collector's booth.
- 3:54And he said to him, [clears throat]
- 3:55"Follow me."
- 3:58And he got up and followed him.
- 4:03Now, that is the entirety of Matthew's
- 4:06comment on himself.
- 4:10He doesn't paint some vivid drama.
- 4:13He just says, "God saw me when nobody
- 4:17else did." And he spoke two words to me
- 4:21that changed my life forever.
- 4:24Then it happened that as Jesus was
- 4:25reclining at the table in the house,
- 4:28behold, many tax collectors and sinners
- 4:30came and were dining with Jesus and his
- 4:34disciples.
- 4:35And when the Pharisees saw this, they
- 4:37said to the disciples, "Why is your
- 4:40teacher eating with tax collectors and
- 4:42sinners?" But when Jesus heard this, he
- 4:46said, "It is not those who are healthy
- 4:49who need a physician, but those who are
- 4:53sick. But go and learn what this means.
- 4:57I desire compassion,
- 5:00not sacrifice.
- 5:02for I did not come to call the righteous
- 5:05but sinners.
- 5:07So here's Matthew's unspoken narrative.
- 5:11He starts this section by saying, "I was
- 5:14a tax collector and he called me." And
- 5:17then he tells a story about how they had
- 5:20dinner that night and people were
- 5:22offended that he Matthew was the was
- 5:25there with Jesus and a one of the kinds
- 5:28of people Jesus was hanging out with.
- 5:31And he remembers what Jesus said to
- 5:34those who protested to this grace that
- 5:37God came to call sinners to say to the
- 5:42broken, to say to the needy, "Follow
- 5:44me." and to see them actually do it.
- 5:49Then the disciples of John came to him
- 5:51asking,
- 5:53"Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but
- 5:57your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus
- 6:00said to them, "The attendants of the
- 6:04bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the
- 6:07bridegroom is with them, can they?"
- 6:10But the days will come when the
- 6:12bridegroom is taken away from them,
- 6:14[clears throat]
- 6:15and then they will fast.
- 6:19But no one puts a patch of unshrunk
- 6:21cloth on an old garment, for the patch
- 6:26pulls away from the garment, and a worse
- 6:29tear results.
- 6:32Nor do people put new wine into old wine
- 6:36skins. Otherwise, the wine skins burst
- 6:39and the wine pours out and the wine
- 6:41skins are ruined.
- 6:43But they put new wine into fresh wine
- 6:46skins and both are preserved.
- 6:50So in this section,
- 6:53John's disciples are asking Jesus,
- 6:57why don't your disciples behave in an
- 7:01expected religious way?
- 7:05And Jesus is saying that expected
- 7:08religious way
- 7:10is an old way. It's an old garment
- 7:16and I am a new thing and I am not a
- 7:20patch that you can stitch onto your old
- 7:22garment.
- 7:24I am a whole new thing. And it's not
- 7:28going to work to cut pieces of my
- 7:31teaching and ways out and glue them onto
- 7:34your old thinking and traditions and
- 7:37rituals. You're going to have to throw
- 7:39away the whole garment and acknowledge,
- 7:42behold, God is doing something new. And
- 7:46then he gives the analogy of the wine
- 7:47skins.
- 7:50New wine is far more turbulent
- 7:56and it swells and it's got much more gas
- 7:59in it still. So if you put it in an old
- 8:02wine skin, it's going to burst.
- 8:05But the old wine skin is for wine that
- 8:07is old, that doesn't have that power,
- 8:10that intensity in it. And Jesus is
- 8:13saying, "The power and intensity of what
- 8:16I'm bringing will burst
- 8:18the container of your traditional
- 8:21religion.
- 8:22So, you're going to have to get a new
- 8:24container if you're going to receive
- 8:26what I'm bringing." Now, he's given this
- 8:29idea of this new way, this new
- 8:31container. And then Matthew starts the
- 8:34next the next section of his chapter
- 8:37with these words. While he was saying
- 8:40these things to them, something begins
- 8:45to happen. Now, I want you to understand
- 8:48that Matthew wants us to understand that
- 8:52there is a connection with the miracles
- 8:55that are about to be described and this
- 8:58new attitude that Jesus is just
- 9:00describing
- 9:02about the wine, skin, and the garment.
- 9:05Okay? Jesus is saying to religious
- 9:10people,
- 9:11you're not coming at my preaching and
- 9:14message the right way. You're coming at
- 9:17it wrong. You've got to come with a new
- 9:20mindset.
- 9:22You've got to come with a new faith. And
- 9:25while he's saying this,
- 9:28there's someone in his audience who is
- 9:31the ruler of the synagogue.
- 9:34And that person, he doesn't wait until
- 9:37the sermon ends to obey. He gets a new
- 9:40wine skinin right on the spot. And he
- 9:44interrupts Jesus with a request that is
- 9:48as new and turbulent as the the wine
- 9:51that Jesus is pouring out. So this
- 9:55exchange is an example of what he has
- 9:58just instructed.
- 10:01That's what the Bible wants us to get
- 10:02when it says while he was still saying
- 10:05these things to them. Okay. So, you're
- 10:09thinking, "What would a new wine skin
- 10:11look like in my life?" The next stories
- 10:13are going to tell you what new wine skin
- 10:15looks like. Old wine skin looks like
- 10:17sitting back and waiting and watching
- 10:19and asking very intelligent questions.
- 10:22That's what the scribes and religious
- 10:24have done so far. It's words. It's
- 10:27questions. new wine skin looks like
- 10:30stepping forward with a commitment of
- 10:33faith that acknowledges God can do what
- 10:36I need him to do and I'm I'm accepting
- 10:38it. I'm ready for it. So, here's the new
- 10:40wine skin. While he was saying these
- 10:45things to them, a synagogue official
- 10:50came and bowed down before him. Does
- 10:54that feel like a new way?
- 10:58And he said, "My daughter has just died,
- 11:04but come and lay your hand on her and
- 11:08she will live."
- 11:12That's not a question.
- 11:15That's not a testing.
- 11:17That's not a panic. That is a new wine
- 11:20skin.
- 11:22And Jesus got up and began to follow
- 11:26him. [clears throat]
- 11:27And so did his disciples.
- 11:31This new wine skin puts Jesus in action
- 11:34immediately. He's not cutting Jesus out
- 11:37as a piece of cloth on his old garment
- 11:40and he's not using an old skin. He's
- 11:42coming with a whole new way. He commits
- 11:44himself to the course of faith. Here's
- 11:47my problem. I'm humbling [clears throat]
- 11:49myself by bowing first. I'm
- 11:51acknowledging my problem and then I'm
- 11:54committing that I know my daughter will
- 11:57live if you come into this situation.
- 12:03So Jesus gets up and he's moving.
- 12:06He's going somewhere. It's an urgent
- 12:08process. I mean, who would want to
- 12:11interrupt Jesus
- 12:13while he's on the way to raise a
- 12:15daughter from the dead?
- 12:17I wouldn't. But there was a woman
- 12:21who had heard that message about a new
- 12:23wine skinin. And she was afraid that the
- 12:26old wineskin would be waiting for a
- 12:28better time. So she grabbed her new wine
- 12:31skin. Listen to this. While he's walking
- 12:34toward the ruler's house, it says, "And
- 12:36a woman who had been suffering from a
- 12:40hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind
- 12:44him and [clears throat] touched the
- 12:46fringe of his cloak.
- 12:49For she was saying to herself,
- 12:54"If only I touch his garment, I will get
- 12:58well."
- 13:00These two people have the same
- 13:03definitive faith that the centurion had
- 13:06in the previous chapter. They are
- 13:09claiming it. They are confessing his
- 13:11power and they're saying it to themsel.
- 13:14This is the new wineskin. The new wine
- 13:17skin is faith, not testing. It's action,
- 13:21not waiting. It's now, not later.
- 13:27But Jesus turning and seeing her said,
- 13:30"Daughter,
- 13:32take courage. Your faith has made you
- 13:34well." At once the woman was made well.
- 13:40I think it took a lot of courage to get
- 13:42down on her knees and go touch him while
- 13:45he's moving to raise a girl from the
- 13:47dead.
- 13:49But she apparently had fear, too.
- 13:53Apparently, there was a war inside
- 13:55between courage and fear. And so, he
- 13:59looked behind her and said, "Take
- 14:01courage. You're healed."
- 14:05When Jesus came into the officials house
- 14:07and saw the flute players and the crowd
- 14:10in noisy disorder,
- 14:13he said, "Leave."
- 14:17That's what Jesus says to all of our old
- 14:21wine skins.
- 14:23Leave.
- 14:25Leave for the girl has not died, but is
- 14:29asleep. and they began laughing at him.
- 14:33And when the crowd had been sent out, he
- 14:35entered and took her by the hand, and
- 14:38the girl got up.
- 14:41The news spread throughout all the land.
- 14:44As Jesus went on from there, two blind
- 14:46men followed him, crying out, "Have
- 14:49mercy on us, son of David."
- 14:52When he entered the house, the blind men
- 14:54came up to him. And Jesus said to them,
- 14:57"Do you believe that I am able to do
- 15:00this?
- 15:01We need a new wine skin here. We need
- 15:04definitive faith. We don't just need
- 15:06please and questions."
- 15:09They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he
- 15:13touched their eyes, saying, "It shall be
- 15:16done to you according to your faith."
- 15:20and their eyes were opened and Jesus
- 15:23sternly warned them, "See that no one
- 15:27knows about this." This is the second
- 15:30time in two chapters when he's performed
- 15:32a notable miracle and he's warned them,
- 15:35"Do not tell people about this."
- 15:39But when they went out,
- 15:41but they went out and spread the news
- 15:45about him throughout all the land.
- 15:49As they were going out, a mute,
- 15:52demon-possessed man was brought to him.
- 15:55After the demon was cast out, the mute
- 15:57man spoke, and the crowds were amazed
- 15:59and were [music] saying, "Nothing like
- 16:02this has ever been seen in Israel."
- 16:06But the Pharisees were saying, now
- 16:08here's [music] some old wine skins, but
- 16:10the Pharisees were saying, "He casts
- 16:13[music] out the demons by the ruler of
- 16:16the demons."
- 16:18Jesus was going through all the cities
- 16:20and villages teaching in their
- 16:22synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of
- 16:26the kingdom
- 16:28and healing every kind of disease and
- 16:31every kind of [music] sickness.
- 16:33Seeing the people, he felt compassion
- 16:35for them
- 16:37because they were distressed
- 16:40and dispirited
- 16:42like sheep without a shepherd.
- 16:45Then he said to his disciples, "The
- 16:48harvest is plentiful, but the workers
- 16:50are few. Therefore, beseech the Lord of
- 16:54the harvest to send out workers into his
- 16:58[music] harvest."
- 17:00Now, this last section is so powerful
- 17:04because it tells us the mindset
- 17:08that Jesus had and the condition that he
- 17:12came to.
- 17:13It says that he had compassion for the
- 17:16people because they [music] were
- 17:18distressed
- 17:19and dispirited.
- 17:22That literally means they were harassed
- 17:26and thrown down.
- 17:30You picture someone being harassed and
- 17:32tossed to the ground. That was the
- 17:35condition of the church, of the people
- 17:37of God. And that was the environment the
- 17:40Messiah stepped into and began
- 17:43performing miracles in.
- 17:45And that's the environment God can still
- 17:47work in in our lives.
- 17:53[music]
