- 0:00When Jesus [music] came down from the
- 0:02mountain, large crowds followed him. And
- 0:05a leper came to him and bowed down
- 0:08before him and said,"Lord, if you are
- 0:11willing,
- 0:12you can make me clean."
- 0:16Jesus stretched out his hand and touched
- 0:18him, saying, "I am willing. Be
- 0:21cleansed."
- 0:23And immediately his leprosy was
- 0:26cleansed.
- 0:27And Jesus said to him, "See that you
- 0:31tell no one,
- 0:33but go show yourself to the priest and
- 0:36present the offering that Moses
- 0:38commanded as [music] a testimony to
- 0:41them." And when Jesus entered Capernaum,
- 0:45a centurion came to him imploring him
- 0:48and saying,"Lord,
- 0:51my servant is lying paralyzed at home,
- 0:55fearfully tormented."
- 0:57And Jesus said to him, "I will come and
- 1:01heal him."
- 1:03But the centurion said, "Lord, I am not
- 1:06worthy for you to come under my roof,
- 1:10but just say the word and my servant
- 1:14will be healed.
- 1:16For I also am a man under authority
- 1:20with soldiers under me." And I say to
- 1:24this one, "Go," and he goes, and to
- 1:26another, "Come," and he comes. and to my
- 1:29slave, do this, and he does it."
- 1:34Now when Jesus heard this, he marveled
- 1:37and said to those who are following,
- 1:39"Truly, I say to you, I have not found
- 1:43such great faith with anyone in Israel.
- 1:47I say to you that many will come from
- 1:49east and west and recline at the table
- 1:52with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the
- 1:54kingdom of heaven.
- 1:56But the sons of the kingdom will be cast
- 1:59out into the outer darkness. In that
- 2:02place there will be weeping and nashing
- 2:05of teeth.
- 2:06And Jesus said to the centurion, "Go and
- 2:11it shall be done for you as you have
- 2:13believed." And the servant was healed
- 2:16that very moment.
- 2:19So this is Jesus immediately on the
- 2:23heels of his threechapter sermon on the
- 2:26mount. And as he comes down from the
- 2:29mountain, a large crowd is following
- 2:32him. It would not be that unusual to
- 2:35what was seen in the time of Gandhi when
- 2:39the hope and expectation for revolution
- 2:43resulted in a large multitude following
- 2:47Gandhi from village to village. That's
- 2:50what was happening. People were
- 2:52expecting that something was going to
- 2:54happen quite quickly. And that's why
- 2:57they set down their tools of work. They
- 3:00walked away from their fields. They
- 3:02stepped out of their homes and they just
- 3:04wanted to be with him cuz something
- 3:08special and miraculous and revolutionary
- 3:10could happen at any minute. He comes and
- 3:14he sees this leper who asks him if he
- 3:18can be cleansed if he's willing. But the
- 3:21interesting thing to me is that Jesus
- 3:24says, "See that you tell no one."
- 3:28Now Jesus has just performed one of his
- 3:30early miracles, one of the big flashy
- 3:33miracles that he would become famous
- 3:36for.
- 3:37But he's done it immediately after
- 3:40stepping down from the mountain where
- 3:41he's preached the message of repentance
- 3:44and transformation, the catechism of the
- 3:47kingdom called the sermon on the mount.
- 3:51And he doesn't want people following him
- 3:53just for the flashy miracles. So he's
- 3:57not trying to build his following
- 4:00through the miracle. He's trying to
- 4:02build his following through the message
- 4:06of the kingdom. So as of yet he's not
- 4:10really wanting to use it. Other places
- 4:12he does, but right now that's not his
- 4:15emphasis. And then we have this
- 4:17centurion coming to Jesus. And it's
- 4:20remarkable because here we have a Jewish
- 4:23preacher
- 4:25being
- 4:26approached by
- 4:29a Roman soldier, a commander, a
- 4:31centurion
- 4:33who is part of the the nation, the
- 4:36empire that has conquered his people and
- 4:38is oppressing them. So this Roman
- 4:41centurion represents everything the
- 4:44people following Jesus want freedom
- 4:46from.
- 4:48And yet Jesus tells him,"I have not
- 4:51found this kind of faith, this
- 4:54excellence of faith in all of Israel."
- 4:58And this shows that God is not attached
- 5:01to this person or this family. He's
- 5:04attached to people who can hear the word
- 5:06of God and act on it. People who can
- 5:09hear the word of God and have faith. And
- 5:12so he tells this centurion,
- 5:14he has this exchange with this centurion
- 5:16that's very interesting.
- 5:18The centurion asks for healing for his
- 5:22servant, which is meaningful all by
- 5:24itself.
- 5:25It speaks to the character of this man,
- 5:28the character that produces the faith,
- 5:30the love that comes before faith. Jesus
- 5:34tells him, "I will go and heal your
- 5:37servant. I will make a journey to your
- 5:39house."
- 5:41But this attitude of faith, greater than
- 5:44any faith in all of Israel, is also
- 5:46rooted in honor. He's aware of Jesus's
- 5:50ministry and his busyness and his
- 5:52mission. He's not presumptuous.
- 5:56And he says, "I'm not worthy for you to
- 5:58come into my house." He's a gentile, so
- 6:02it wouldn't have been proper even for a
- 6:04Jew to go into his house. He doesn't
- 6:06want Jesus to be put in an uncomfortable
- 6:10situation. There's just honor and regard
- 6:13and respect.
- 6:15And the man says, "For I too am a man
- 6:19under authority."
- 6:22It's very fascinating that he does not
- 6:24say, "I am a man with authority or in
- 6:29authority." He says, "I am a man under
- 6:32authority."
- 6:34And then he begins to tell how he uses
- 6:37that authority to order the people in
- 6:41his life. He's in a position over
- 6:43others, but he's also in a position
- 6:46under authority. He's conscious that he
- 6:50has authority to tell people to go and
- 6:52they will go, to come and they will
- 6:54come, to do this and they will do it.
- 6:58But he's also conscious that his
- 6:59authority is derivative. it comes from
- 7:02something greater. In his case, it's
- 7:04Caesar and his commanders between him
- 7:07and Caesar. But he's acknowledging that
- 7:10Jesus has the power to heal because he's
- 7:15in submission.
- 7:17Jesus is under authority.
- 7:21And then he's basically saying,"Lord,
- 7:24my servant's disease
- 7:27is something under your authority and
- 7:30you could tell it to go and it will go."
- 7:34And what's fascinating is that after
- 7:37Jesus compliments his faith, he uses one
- 7:40of the words that the centurion used to
- 7:44describe how he governs his servants.
- 7:49Remember the centurion said,"I say to
- 7:52this one, go." And he goes,
- 7:56what is the one word that Jesus speaks
- 7:58to the centurion?
- 8:00The very thing he first thing he says is
- 8:02he says go
- 8:05and [clears throat] it shall be done for
- 8:07you as you have believed. So what he's
- 8:11saying to the centurion is it's not just
- 8:14the disease that's under my authority,
- 8:17but you are stepping under my authority
- 8:19and becoming an agent of grace as you go
- 8:23to your servant's house and healing goes
- 8:26with you. When Jesus came into Peter's
- 8:29home, he saw his mother-in-law lying
- 8:32sick in bed with a fever.
- 8:35He touched her hand and the fever left
- 8:38her and she got up and waited on him.
- 8:43When evening came, they brought to him
- 8:46many who were demon-possessed.
- 8:49And he cast out the spirits with a word
- 8:53and healed all who were ill. This was to
- 8:56fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah
- 8:58the prophet. He himself took our
- 9:01infirmities and carried away our
- 9:04diseases.
- 9:06In this healing, in these two healings,
- 9:10we see him healing with a touch of his
- 9:13hand. The fever leaves. And the second
- 9:17way we see him healing is by speaking a
- 9:20word. Now, that's exactly the kind of
- 9:22healing that he gave to the centurion
- 9:25servant. The centurion said, "Only speak
- 9:28the word and my servant will be healed."
- 9:32Jesus isn't walking among us in the
- 9:34flesh as a human being anymore. But he
- 9:39still his word is still with us. And
- 9:41that spoken word can still find our
- 9:44place of need and heal us.
- 9:48When Jesus saw a crowd around him, he
- 9:50gave orders to depart to the other side
- 9:53of the sea.
- 9:55Then a scribe came and said to him,
- 9:57"Teacher, [clears throat]
- 9:58I will follow you wherever you go."
- 10:02Jesus said to him, "The foxes have
- 10:05holes, and the birds of the air have
- 10:08nests,
- 10:09but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay
- 10:12his head."
- 10:14Another of the disciples said to him,
- 10:16"Lord, permit me first to go and bury my
- 10:20father." But Jesus said to him, "Follow
- 10:23me and allow the dead to bury their own
- 10:26dead."
- 10:28When he got into the boat, his disciples
- 10:30followed him. And behold, there arose a
- 10:33great storm on the sea, so that the boat
- 10:37was being covered with the waves. But
- 10:40Jesus himself was asleep.
- 10:43And they came to him and woke him,
- 10:44saying, "Save us, Lord. We are
- 10:47perishing."
- 10:49He said to them, "Why are you afraid,
- 10:53you men of little faith?"
- 10:56Then he got up and rebuked the winds and
- 10:59the sea, and it became perfectly calm.
- 11:03The men were amazed and said, "What kind
- 11:06of man is this that even the winds and
- 11:09the sea obey him?"
- 11:11So this chapter is all about faith. And
- 11:15the first faith we have is from a leper.
- 11:17And the second faith we have is from a
- 11:20centurion. Very unlikely for the Jewish
- 11:23writer to be writing about the Messiah's
- 11:26activity in the Jewish community,
- 11:29starting with a leper and moving to a
- 11:31centurion. And then we have him
- 11:34interacting with the fisherman's mother,
- 11:38Peter's mother, and a healing comes. And
- 11:40then we have him healing the crowds with
- 11:42a word. And then we have a teacher
- 11:44coming. And uh this scribe, this
- 11:48respected
- 11:50theologian of Jesus's day comes to him.
- 11:53He simply says, "I will follow you
- 11:55wherever you go." And Jesus discerns,
- 11:59"No, you won't." Because what you're
- 12:02looking for is a comfort zone. You're
- 12:04looking for your niche in this world.
- 12:07And he's saying foxes are like that.
- 12:10They have holes in the ground. And birds
- 12:12of the air, they build nests. But that
- 12:15place of complacency and comfort that
- 12:19you're looking for, I don't have it for
- 12:21you. And then the next man comes and
- 12:24says,"Lord, I will follow you, but
- 12:26permit me to first go and bury my
- 12:28father." And Jesus says, "Let the dead
- 12:30bury the dead. Follow me
- 12:34instead." And when the disciples do
- 12:37follow him, they follow him into a
- 12:39storm. Does that sound like a nest? Does
- 12:42that sound like a comfy hole?
- 12:45Your your comfortable house on the
- 12:47ground? No, it doesn't. It's
- 12:49demonstrating the volatility of a life
- 12:52of obedience with God.
- 12:55But Jesus is sleeping while they're
- 12:57freaking out.
- 13:00What makes us afraid does not make him
- 13:02afraid. And they have to shake him and
- 13:05wake him up. And when they wake him up,
- 13:08the first thing he does is not address
- 13:10the storm of the water and the wind, but
- 13:12address the storm of anxiety and
- 13:15unbelief in the hearts of his people.
- 13:19Have you ever felt yourself in a
- 13:21horrible crisis, in a terrible storm,
- 13:24and you felt like God focused on your
- 13:26attitude first?
- 13:28Because he wants you to be a vessel
- 13:31through whom his grace can flow to that
- 13:34circumstance. But until you fix the
- 13:36attitude, until you get back in faith,
- 13:40you're less than useless.
- 13:42When he came to the other side into the
- 13:44country of the Gatherines, two men who
- 13:48were demonpossessed met him as they were
- 13:51coming out of the tombs.
- 13:53They were so extremely violent that no
- 13:56one could pass by it that way.
- 13:59And they cried out, saying, "What
- 14:01business do we have with you? What
- 14:04business do we have with each other, son
- 14:06of God? Have you come here to torment us
- 14:10before the time?
- 14:13Now there was a herd of many swine
- 14:16feeding at a distance from them. The
- 14:19demons began to intreat him, saying, "If
- 14:22you are going to cast us out, send us
- 14:24into the herd of swine."
- 14:27And he said, "Go."
- 14:32and they came out and went into the
- 14:34swine. And the whole herd rushed down
- 14:37the steep bank into the sea and perished
- 14:40in the waters.
- 14:43The herdsmen ran away and went to the
- 14:45city and reported everything, including
- 14:48what had happened to the demoniacs.
- 14:51And behold, the whole city came out to
- 14:53meet Jesus.
- 14:55And when they saw him,
- 14:58they implored him to leave their region.
- 15:03Now, here's the last section of this
- 15:05chapter.
- 15:07We have a scene where Jesus
- 15:11goes to a place and encounters two
- 15:14demon-possessed men coming out of tombs.
- 15:18This is a creepy scene.
- 15:21And yet the town has grown accustomed
- 15:26to the demons, but they are not
- 15:28accustomed to the authority of God and
- 15:32[music] the word of God bringing change
- 15:34in hopeless situations.
- 15:37So it says nobody would pass by the
- 15:40demon-possessed people because they were
- 15:41there.
- 15:44But after the demon-possessed people are
- 15:45healed,
- 15:47now they come out to meet Jesus and they
- 15:50beg him to leave their town.
- 15:53This is to show us how our cultures can
- 15:56become comfortable with, grow accustomed
- 15:59to horrible conditions, horrible sin,
- 16:05horrible demonic oppression. And that's
- 16:08just part of life. But when God steps in
- 16:11and begins to bring change and healing,
- 16:15we ask him to leave because it makes us
- 16:17scared.
- 16:19Now, it's interesting
- 16:21that the demons
- 16:23ask Jesus
- 16:25to send them into the swine. Why do you
- 16:29think that was? What does that tell us?
- 16:33That tells us that a fundamental
- 16:37ambition of spirits is incarnation.
- 16:43They want to take up residence in a
- 16:47human expression
- 16:49or at least
- 16:51a visible corporal
- 16:55creature expression. So when they're
- 16:58about to be cast out of these two men,
- 17:00they would rather be in the swine
- 17:03than in the waste places. And Jesus
- 17:07tolerates it, knowing that it's no great
- 17:10loss when those swine head into the
- 17:13ocean and those uh demons head where
- 17:17they should be going from the beginning.
