- 0:00Matthew 26:1. [music]
- 0:02When Jesus had finished all these words,
- 0:05he said to his disciples,
- 0:07"You know that after two days, the
- 0:09Passover is coming, and the Son of Man
- 0:12is to be handed over for crucifixion."
- 0:16Then the chief priests and the elders of
- 0:18the people were gathered together in the
- 0:21court of the high priest named [music]
- 0:23Caiaphas.
- 0:24And they plotted together to seize Jesus
- 0:28by stealth and kill him.
- 0:31But they were saying not during the
- 0:34festival, otherwise a riot might occur
- 0:37among the people.
- 0:40Now when Jesus was in Bethany at the
- 0:43home of Simon the leper, a woman came to
- 0:47him with an alabaster vial of very
- 0:50[music] costly perfume, and she poured
- 0:53it on his head as he reclined at the
- 0:55table.
- 0:57But the disciples were indignant when
- 1:00they saw this and said, "Why this waste?
- 1:05For this perfume might have been sold
- 1:08for a high price and the money given to
- 1:11the poor.
- 1:13But Jesus aware of this said to them,
- 1:17"Why do you bother the woman? For she
- 1:20has done a good deed to me,
- 1:23for you always have the poor with you,
- 1:26but you do not always have me."
- 1:29For when she poured this perfume on my
- 1:31body, she did it to prepare me for
- 1:34burial.
- 1:36Truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel
- 1:39is preached in the whole world, what
- 1:42this woman has done will also be spoken
- 1:45of in memory of her.
- 1:50So Jesus is getting ready to die and
- 1:53he's telling them what's coming and
- 1:56they're not hearing him.
- 1:58And then Matthew gives us this little
- 2:01insight into this event where he goes to
- 2:05a man named Simon's house. And Simon was
- 2:08likely a leper who was previously
- 2:12cleansed.
- 2:14And in another gospel, Jesus describes
- 2:17how when he comes to this man's house,
- 2:20the man does not show him a greeting. He
- 2:23does not show him honor or respect.
- 2:26There's no affection. There's no warmth.
- 2:29And yet this woman
- 2:32who from the other gospels we know is a
- 2:34notorious sinner, likely a prostitute.
- 2:38She comes and gives him this costly gift
- 2:42that she had, likely a gift that was
- 2:45associated with her trade as a
- 2:47prostitute.
- 2:49And she pours it all out as much to end
- 2:53her former life as anything else. But
- 2:57the disciples can only see the money
- 3:00involved. In the other gospels, we're
- 3:03told that it's specifically Judas who
- 3:06raises the objection. And it's not
- 3:08because he cares so much about the poor,
- 3:10but it's because he was gleaning from
- 3:13the money bag that he was supposed to be
- 3:15watching over.
- 3:17So Jesus tells them, "You always have
- 3:20the poor with you, but this woman has
- 3:22anointed my body for burial. She's done
- 3:25something for me in anticipation of my
- 3:28departure.
- 3:30The next scene is tied to this scene in
- 3:33Matthew's story. Matthew immediately
- 3:36begins to tell how Judas for money sold
- 3:40Jesus to his enemies.
- 3:43And so the the insight is that he's
- 3:47pretending to be concerned about the
- 3:48poor, but what he's really concerned
- 3:50about is is himself, his own money. And
- 3:53that concern is what drives him to not
- 3:56only withhold something costly from
- 3:58Jesus, but to sell Jesus.
- 4:02Then one of the twel named Judas a
- 4:05Scariot went to the chief priests and
- 4:07said, "What are you willing to give me
- 4:11to betray him to you
- 4:15or deliver him to you?"
- 4:18and they weighed out 30 pieces of silver
- 4:21to him.
- 4:23From then on, he began looking for a
- 4:25good opportunity to betray Jesus.
- 4:30Now on the first day of the unleavened
- 4:32bread, the disciples came to Jesus and
- 4:35asked, "Where do you want us to prepare
- 4:38for you to eat the Passover?"
- 4:41And he said, "Go into the city to a
- 4:44certain man and say to him,"The
- 4:46[clears throat] teacher says, "My time
- 4:49is near. I am to keep the Passover at
- 4:52your house with my disciples."
- 4:55The disciples did as Jesus had directed
- 4:58them. And they prepared the Passover.
- 5:02Now again we see Judas going to the
- 5:05chief priests and asking them what are
- 5:08you willing to give me to deliver him
- 5:12into your hands.
- 5:15Judas is his name means true worshipper
- 5:19Jew
- 5:21and he's not from Galilee like all the
- 5:25others.
- 5:26He's from a different region, likely a
- 5:29region that was much more conservative,
- 5:31much more devout,
- 5:34and it was a region where zealots had
- 5:37risen up. So he's Judas. He's like, it's
- 5:41like saying the true Jew from the
- 5:44[clears throat] the region where the
- 5:45Zealot revolt came from.
- 5:48And it's possible that Judas is
- 5:52disenchanted and frustrated that Jesus
- 5:55is not acting out his rebellion against
- 5:58Rome soon enough. And it's possible even
- 6:02that Judas is trying to provoke him to
- 6:06seize the power that Judas wants him to
- 6:09seize. And so going to the chief
- 6:12priests, we don't know his motivation.
- 6:14We know that money is a big part of it,
- 6:17but it's possible that he's trying to
- 6:20trigger the revolution that he believes
- 6:23Jesus should be starting.
- 6:26It's interesting that they give him 30
- 6:29pieces of silver. Who else was given who
- 6:33else was sold for 30 pieces of silver?
- 6:36Joseph. [snorts] Joseph was one among
- 6:39how many brothers? 12.
- 6:42So in a symbolic way, Jesus is being
- 6:46sold by his brothers to his enemies for
- 6:5030 pieces of silver. And in a symbolic
- 6:53way, he's going to be handed over and
- 6:56imprisoned
- 6:58uh by that same system that he's being
- 7:01sold to.
- 7:03And uh he's fulfilling his his role as a
- 7:07type as the fulfillment of Joseph.
- 7:11Now when evening came, Jesus was
- 7:13reclining at the table with the 12
- 7:15disciples.
- 7:17And as they were eating, he said, "Truly
- 7:21I say to you that one of you will betray
- 7:24me."
- 7:27Being deeply grieved, they each one
- 7:32began to say to him, "Surely not I,
- 7:35Lord."
- 7:39And he answered, "He who has dipped his
- 7:42hand with me in the bull is the one who
- 7:44will betray me."
- 7:47The Son of Man is to go, just as it was
- 7:50written of him. But woe to that man by
- 7:53whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
- 7:56It would have been good for that man if
- 7:59he had not been born.
- 8:02And Judas
- 8:04who was betraying him said, "Surely it
- 8:07is not I, Rabbi."
- 8:09Jesus said to him, [clears throat] "You
- 8:12have said it yourself."
- 8:16This is the first communion.
- 8:20This is a sober moment. He's going to be
- 8:24betrayed this very night. And so the
- 8:27meal of communion
- 8:30is weighty with the question
- 8:33[clears throat] of faithfulness.
- 8:37And the core question that the disciples
- 8:39are asking,
- 8:41they're not making a statement, it is
- 8:43not I, but the core question that
- 8:45they're all asking is, is it I? And
- 8:50those who are asking that question in
- 8:52sincerity will not be the betrayers.
- 8:56But the one who asks Rabbi, surely it is
- 9:01not I, but also is the one who dips in
- 9:05the bowl at the same time as Jesus.
- 9:08He's the one.
- 9:11There's probably significance to the
- 9:13idea that he was dipping in the bull at
- 9:16the same time as the Lord.
- 9:18There's some arrogance conveyed in that.
- 9:22there's some presumption.
- 9:24He's lost his sense of honor. So, he
- 9:28doesn't have a regard or respect even to
- 9:32wait his turn in the food line.
- 9:36He's made himself equal to Jesus and
- 9:38he's dipping at the same time as the
- 9:40Lord.
- 9:42While they were eating, Jesus
- 9:44[clears throat] took some bread and
- 9:46after blessing it, broke it and gave it
- 9:49to the disciples and said, "Take, eat.
- 9:54This is my body."
- 9:58And when he had taken a cup and given
- 10:00thanks, he gave it to them, saying,
- 10:04"Drink from it, all of you, for this is
- 10:07the blood of the new covenant, which is
- 10:10poured out for many, for forgiveness of
- 10:13sins.
- 10:14But I say to you, I will not drink of
- 10:17this fruit of the vine from now on until
- 10:20the day when I drink it new with you in
- 10:23my Father's Kingdom."
- 10:26After singing a hymn, they went out to
- 10:29the Mount of Olives.
- 10:31So here we see the communion supper
- 10:34instituted in its first example.
- 10:38Jesus takes bread and he breaks it.
- 10:42And that breaking is acknowledging that
- 10:46it is through suffering.
- 10:48It is through sacrifice.
- 10:51It is through his atoning offering that
- 10:55his body, his church is going to be
- 10:59formed.
- 11:01And he tells them that [clears throat]
- 11:03they need to partake. They need to eat
- 11:06of that body. The word in Greek for
- 11:09fellowship is coinia.
- 11:12And it's the idea of eating bread and
- 11:15drinking wine and having this fellowship
- 11:18with one another.
- 11:20And then he takes the cup and he says,
- 11:23"Drink from it all of you. This is the
- 11:26blood of the covenant."
- 11:30So no longer is it the blood of bulls
- 11:33and goats. No longer is it circumcision,
- 11:37but he says this is the blood of the
- 11:39covenant.
- 11:41Salvation that Jesus is offering is
- 11:44covenant salvation. He says, "This is
- 11:47the blood of the covenant.
- 11:51This is the blood of the covenant which
- 11:53is poured out for many for the
- 11:56forgiveness of sins."
- 11:59Then he tells them that he's not going
- 12:01to drink of the wine until he drinks it
- 12:04a new in the kingdom. [clears throat]
- 12:07So the kingdom is going to be
- 12:08inaugurated
- 12:10thereafter. and he's going to drink it
- 12:12again with them, but not until he's made
- 12:15this complete sacrifice.
- 12:18Then they sing a hymn,
- 12:21and they go out to the Mount of Olives.
- 12:25Then Jesus said to them, [clears throat]
- 12:27"You will all fall away because of me
- 12:31this night. For it is written, I will
- 12:35strike down the shepherd, and the sheep
- 12:38of the flock shall be scattered.
- 12:42But after I have been raised, I will go
- 12:45ahead of you to Galilee."
- 12:49But Peter said to him, "Even though all
- 12:52may fall away because of you, I will
- 12:56never fall away."
- 12:59Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you
- 13:03that this very night before a rooster
- 13:06crows, you will deny me three times."
- 13:10Peter said to him, "Even if I have to
- 13:13die with you, I will not deny you." All
- 13:17the disciples said the same thing, too.
- 13:21In the first part of this supper, we see
- 13:25that they're all asking if they are the
- 13:28ones who are actively betraying him and
- 13:31delivering him over to his enemies.
- 13:34In the second part, we see that they are
- 13:37facing whether they will remain faithful
- 13:40in the face of death and trouble that is
- 13:43coming.
- 13:45And in the first test, only one is
- 13:48failing the test. all the others can
- 13:50take communion
- 13:52with a clear conscience. In the second
- 13:55test, no one is passing.
- 13:59He tells them that
- 14:01they're going to strike the shepherd and
- 14:04the sheep are going to be scattered
- 14:07and he says that
- 14:10they're all going to deny him. And Peter
- 14:14has the last word. He he argues and he
- 14:17comes back and says, "Even if I have to
- 14:20die with you, I will never deny you."
- 14:24And all the disciples say the same
- 14:26thing.
- 14:28They don't understand that this is going
- 14:30to require more than what they have. But
- 14:32in time, God is going to give them what
- 14:34they need to be faithful on this greater
- 14:36level.
- 14:38>> [sighs and gasps]
- 14:39>> Then Jesus came with them to a place
- 14:41called Gethsemane and said to his
- 14:44disciples, "Sit here while I go over
- 14:47there and pray." And he took with him
- 14:50Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and
- 14:54began to be grieved and distressed.
- 14:58Then he said to them, "My soul is deeply
- 15:01grieved to the point of death. remain
- 15:04here and keep watch with me.
- 15:08And he went a little beyond them and
- 15:10fell on his face and prayed, saying, My
- 15:14father, if it is possible, let this cup
- 15:18pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as
- 15:23you will.
- 15:25So, Gethsemane
- 15:28is a garden on the Mount of Olives and
- 15:33it literally means
- 15:35the oil press
- 15:38and it was a place where they would
- 15:40harvest the olives. Right there in the
- 15:42middle of the garden, they had a olive
- 15:45press. And that's the place where a
- 15:48stone would crush
- 15:51the olives and squeeze from them the oil
- 15:56that that was in them. And so the very
- 15:59fact that he is praying in this garden
- 16:04is symbolic of a crushing and a breaking
- 16:08that is happening in his spirit in
- 16:11himself. But what is coming out is the
- 16:15oil of anointing
- 16:17[snorts] and he prays my father if it is
- 16:21possible let this cup pass from me. This
- 16:25is the cup that he spoke of when the
- 16:28mother of James and John asked for her
- 16:31sons to sit, one on his left and one on
- 16:34his right. He said, "Are you able to
- 16:36drink the cup that I am going to drink?
- 16:39This is the cup of total surrender. This
- 16:43is the cup of total sacrifice.
- 16:46This is the cup of salvation that the
- 16:49psalmist speaks of, which is the cup of
- 16:52Yeshua.
- 16:54And this is the cup of God's will no
- 16:58matter what it takes. This is the cup
- 17:01that Paul speaks of in Philippians 2
- 17:05when he said, "Let this mind be in you
- 17:07that was also in Christ Jesus,
- 17:09who being in very nature God, did not
- 17:12grasp for his rights as God, but emptied
- 17:15himself and took on the form of a
- 17:18servant, even a bondervant,
- 17:20and became obedient unto death, even
- 17:24death on the cross."
- 17:27What was he obedient to? He was obedient
- 17:30to the will of God. And what was the
- 17:32will of God? That of all whom you have
- 17:34given me, I should lose none but raise
- 17:37them up on the last day. Ultimately, the
- 17:40obedience was the obedience to the love
- 17:42of God that was expressing itself in the
- 17:46sacrificial
- 17:48offering on the cross.
- 17:51Jesus is praying my father
- 17:54not because he isn't God but because he
- 17:58has emptied himself of those rights in
- 18:02his kinosis so that he can know our
- 18:05humanity and serve as a high priest who
- 18:08is like us in every way. So the human
- 18:11part of him is praying to the divine
- 18:15part of him in his glorification.
- 18:18He will have no limitations. But in his
- 18:21sacrifice, he must know our weakness. So
- 18:25he must pray in this manner.
- 18:30And he came to his disciples and found
- 18:31them sleeping. And he said to Peter,
- 18:34he's saying to the one who was the most
- 18:36vocal about his loyalty, he calls Peter
- 18:39out and he says, "So
- 18:42you men could not keep watch with me for
- 18:45one hour?"
- 18:46He's trying to get Peter to face what he
- 18:50doesn't have. He's trying to get Peter
- 18:52to humble himself, not to humiliate him,
- 18:56but to show him what he's missing so
- 18:59that he can find it. So you men could
- 19:02not keep watch with me for one hour.
- 19:06Keep watching and praying that
- 19:08[clears throat] you may not enter into
- 19:09temptation.
- 19:11The spirit is willing, but the flesh is
- 19:14weak.
- 19:16So Jesus was praying here in the garden
- 19:20and he was wanting them to pray and he
- 19:23was praying that he would not enter into
- 19:25temptation which in this instance means
- 19:28he was praying that in the face of
- 19:31betrayal
- 19:32and attacks and lies and trials and
- 19:37death he would not act
- 19:41as a slave to the fear of death. That's
- 19:45what entering into temptation would have
- 19:47been to act under the power of the
- 19:51devil.
- 19:53The book of Hebrews tells us that the
- 19:54devil holds people in bondage all their
- 19:57lifetime through the fear of death. So
- 19:59entering into temptation would be acting
- 20:03in the bondage of that fear of death.
- 20:06And Jesus is saying to Peter, pray so
- 20:09that you will not enter into temptation.
- 20:13But Peter doesn't pray and Peter is
- 20:15going to enter into temptation.
- 20:19He went away again a second time and
- 20:21prayed saying, "My father,
- 20:24if this cannot pass away unless I drink
- 20:27it, your will be done."
- 20:31Again he came and found them sleeping.
- 20:34For their eyes were heavy. And he left
- 20:36them again and went away and prayed a
- 20:39third time, saying the same thing once
- 20:42more.
- 20:43Then he came to his disciples and said
- 20:45to them, "Are you still sleeping and
- 20:48resting?
- 20:50Behold,
- 20:52the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man
- 20:55is being betrayed into the hands of
- 20:58sinners. Get up, let us be going.
- 21:02Behold, the one who betrays me is at
- 21:05hand."
- 21:07In all likelihood, Jesus would have kept
- 21:10his whereabouts secret. He would have
- 21:14appeared in public because he knew that
- 21:17his haters and murderers feared the
- 21:19people, but he would have kept his
- 21:21lodgings where he was staying secret.
- 21:25And so, the way Judas likely betrayed
- 21:27him was telling the chief priests where
- 21:31he was going to be praying that night.
- 21:35While he was still speaking, behold,
- 21:37Judas, one of the twel,
- 21:41came up accompanied by a large crowd
- 21:45with swords and clubs, who came from the
- 21:48chief priests and elders of the people.
- 21:51Now he who was betraying him gave them a
- 21:55sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, he is
- 21:59the one sees him.
- 22:05Immediately Judas went to Jesus and
- 22:08said, "Hail, Rabbi." And kissed him. And
- 22:13Jesus said to him, "Friend,
- 22:17do what you have come for."
- 22:21Then they came and laid hands on Jesus
- 22:23and seized him.
- 22:26Judas is brazen enough to dip with Jesus
- 22:30in the bowl at the same time, but he
- 22:34still has
- 22:36the language of honor.
- 22:39At the Passover, he calls him, "Rabbi,
- 22:42is it I?" And here again, he says,
- 22:45"Hail, Rabbi."
- 22:47And kisses him on the cheek.
- 22:50We don't know what he was trying to
- 22:52provoke.
- 22:53He may have been surprised by the
- 22:55outcome, but we know he was lifted up in
- 22:58pride.
- 23:00We know he had lost all honor. We know
- 23:03he had taken matters into his own hands,
- 23:06and he had become an instrument of
- 23:08hatred and bitterness and betrayal.
- 23:13And behold, one of those who were with
- 23:15Jesus reached and drew out his sword and
- 23:20struck the slave of the high priest and
- 23:22cut off his ear.
- 23:25Well, that's entering into temptation.
- 23:27That's acting exactly like people act
- 23:31who are still controlled by the fear of
- 23:33death.
- 23:35That's what the enemy wanted. He wanted
- 23:37a bloodbath. But Jesus had a different
- 23:40power completely.
- 23:42Then Jesus said to him, and we know
- 23:44[clears throat] it was Peter, "Put your
- 23:47sword back in its place, for all those
- 23:50who take up the sword shall perish by
- 23:52the sword.
- 23:54Or do you think that I cannot appeal to
- 23:57my father, and he will at once put at my
- 24:00disposal more than 12 legions of angels?
- 24:04How then will the scriptures be
- 24:06fulfilled which say that it must happen
- 24:09this way?"
- 24:11At that time Jesus said to the crowds,
- 24:15"Have you come out with swords and clubs
- 24:17to arrest me as you would against a
- 24:20robber?
- 24:22Every day I used to sit in the temple
- 24:25teaching and you did not seize me. But
- 24:29all this has taken place to fulfill the
- 24:31scriptures of the prophets."
- 24:33Then all the disciples left him and
- 24:37fled.
- 24:39when they realize he's not going to rely
- 24:42on the arm of the flesh, on the sword of
- 24:45violence, but he's going to rely only on
- 24:48the spirit. That's what they don't have.
- 24:52And they run away.
- 24:55Those who had seized Jesus led him away
- 24:58to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the
- 25:01scribes and the elders were gathered
- 25:03together.
- 25:05But Peter was following him at a
- 25:07distance
- 25:09as far as the courtyard of the high
- 25:12priest and entered in and sat down with
- 25:15the officers to see the outcome.
- 25:19Now the chief priests and the whole
- 25:20council kept trying to obtain false
- 25:24testimony against Jesus so that they
- 25:26might put him to death.
- 25:29They did not find any even though many
- 25:32false witnesses came forward.
- 25:35But later on two came forward and said,
- 25:38"This man stated, I am able to destroy
- 25:41the temple of God and to rebuild it in 3
- 25:44days."
- 25:46The high priest stood up and said to
- 25:48him,
- 25:49"Do you not answer? What is it that
- 25:52these men are testifying against you?"
- 25:55But Jesus kept silent.
- 25:58And the high priest said to him, "I
- 26:01adjure you by the living God that you
- 26:04tell us whether you are the Christ, the
- 26:07Son of God."
- 26:09Jesus said to him, "You have said it
- 26:12yourself.
- 26:14Nevertheless, I tell you, hereafter you
- 26:16will see the Son of Man sitting at the
- 26:19right hand of power and coming in the
- 26:22clouds of heaven."
- 26:24Then the high priest tore his robes and
- 26:27said, "He has blasphemed.
- 26:30What further need do we have of
- 26:32witnesses? Behold, you have now heard
- 26:35the blasphemy.
- 26:37What do you think?" They answered, "He
- 26:41deserves death."
- 26:44Then they spat in his face and beat him
- 26:47with their fists. And others slapped him
- 26:50and said, "Prophesy to us, you Christ.
- 26:54Who is the one who hit you?"
- 26:58Is Jesus entering into temptation?
- 27:01[clears throat] Is he retaliating?
- 27:03Is he punching back? Is he defending
- 27:06himself?
- 27:08No. Because all of that would show that
- 27:11he was under the power that these men
- 27:14are under.
- 27:16Now Peter was sitting outside in the
- 27:18courtyard and a servant girl came to him
- 27:21and said,
- 27:23"You too were with Jesus the Galilean."
- 27:27But he denied it before them, saying, "I
- 27:29do not know what you are talking about."
- 27:33When he had gone out to the gateway,
- 27:36another servant girl saw him and said to
- 27:39those who were there, "This man was with
- 27:42Jesus of Nazareth."
- 27:44and he again denied it with an oath. I
- 27:47do not know the man.
- 27:52A little later, the bystanders came up
- 27:55and said to Peter, "Surely you too are
- 27:58one of them, for even the way you talk
- 28:00gives you away."
- 28:03Then he began to curse and swear. I do
- 28:06not know the man. And immediately a
- 28:10rooster crowed.
- 28:13And Peter remembered the word which
- 28:15Jesus had said, "Before a rooster crows,
- 28:19you will deny me three times." And he
- 28:22went out and wept bitterly.
- 28:28Peter
- 28:29has a measure of loyalty.
- 28:32He hangs on even when everyone else
- 28:35flees.
- 28:36But he does not have the power of the
- 28:40Holy Spirit inside of him enough [music]
- 28:42to overcome the power of the fear of
- 28:46death. And so in the face of this
- 28:51cruelty,
- 28:53this betrayal,
- 28:55this humiliation of his master and lord,
- 28:59he can't he can't keep it together.
- 29:03And as soon as he feels the threat of
- 29:07the first question, he gets up and
- 29:09starts leaving.
- 29:11He's asked in the gateway the second
- 29:13time. And the way he proves to them that
- 29:16he's not part of Jesus is with his
- 29:20filthy language. He starts cursing and
- 29:24swearing. And that's how they know, oh
- 29:27no, he he can't be he can't be part of
- 29:30what Jesus is. Jesus would never act
- 29:32like this.
- 29:35It's a weighty thought to see just how
- 29:38weak we are
- 29:41if we have to rely only on the spirit.
- 29:44If Peter could rely on the arm of the
- 29:46flesh and the sword, he would have
- 29:48fought to the bloody end. But if he has
- 29:51to [music] rely on the spirit of God
- 29:54alone, on faith in the world, word and
- 29:58will of God alone, he cannot drink the
- 30:01cup.
- 30:03But there's there's going to come a day
- 30:04when Jesus's promise is fulfilled. You
- 30:07will drink this cup. But that Peter is
- 30:10the Peter who's going to be changed
- 30:12through this revelation that he's having
- 30:14of himself and a Peter that's going to
- 30:16be empowered through what happens at
- 30:18Pentecost.
- 30:20That's still to come.
- 30:23[music]
