- 0:00Matthew 24:1
- 0:03Jesus came out from the temple and was
- 0:06going away when his disciples came up to
- 0:09point [music] out the temple buildings
- 0:11to him.
- 0:13He's just been in the temple and he's
- 0:17been declaring doom on the Pharisees.
- 0:19[music]
- 0:20He said that this mountain is going to
- 0:22be thrown into the sea. He's cleansed
- 0:24it. They've rebelled against his
- 0:26authority, which is his name. And he
- 0:29said, "You won't see the presence
- 0:30[music] of God until you say, "Blessed
- 0:33is he who comes in the authority, the
- 0:35name of the Lord." But his disciples
- 0:38don't get it. They're marveling at the
- 0:42beautiful architecture of Herod's
- 0:44temple.
- 0:46His disciples came up to point out the
- 0:48temple buildings to him. He apparently
- 0:51wasn't seeing them. They wanted to make
- 0:53sure he didn't miss it. And he said to
- 0:56them, "Do you see all these things?"
- 1:00So they think he doesn't see it. He asks
- 1:02them, "Do you see it? Truly I say to
- 1:05you, not one stone here will be left
- 1:09upon another which will not be torn
- 1:11down."
- 1:14As he was sitting on the Mount of
- 1:16Olives, the disciples came to him
- 1:18privately, saying, "Tell us, when will
- 1:20these things happen? And what will be
- 1:22the sign of your coming and the end of
- 1:24the age?" And Jesus answered and said to
- 1:28them, "See to it that no one misleads
- 1:31you."
- 1:33The first thing he does is he cautions,
- 1:36"Don't be misled
- 1:38because it's going to come a lot slower
- 1:40than you [music] think."
- 1:42See to it that no one misleads you, for
- 1:45many will come in my name, saying, "I am
- 1:48the Christ," [music] and will mislead
- 1:50many.
- 1:51You will be hearing of wars and rumors
- 1:54of wars. See that you are not
- 1:56frightened,
- 1:58for those things must take place, but
- 2:01that is not yet the end.
- 2:04For nation will rise against nation, and
- 2:06kingdom against kingdom, and in various
- 2:09places there will be famines and
- 2:12earthquakes, but all these things are
- 2:14merely the beginning of birth panges.
- 2:18Then they will deliver you to
- 2:19tribulation,
- 2:22and will kill you, and you will be hated
- 2:25by all nations because of my [music]
- 2:28name.
- 2:30At that time, many will fall away and
- 2:33will betray one another and hate one
- 2:35another.
- 2:37Many false prophets will arise and will
- 2:40mislead many because lawlessness
- 2:43increased. Most people's love will grow
- 2:46cold.
- 2:48But the one who endures to the end will
- 2:50be saved. This gospel of the kingdom
- 2:53shall be preached in the whole world as
- 2:55a testimony to all nations and then the
- 2:59end will come. Here's the question
- 3:03people want to ask. Is Jesus talking
- 3:06about the destruction of the temple
- 3:10and the conquering of Jerusalem
- 3:14or is he talking about the end of time?
- 3:17[clears throat]
- 3:18And the answer is yes.
- 3:21The way prophecy works throughout the
- 3:25Bible
- 3:26is that it is given and it has a level
- 3:30of fulfillment
- 3:33and then a greater level and then a
- 3:35greater level often in three phases but
- 3:39almost always in more than one phase.
- 3:43So there's this phrase that has been
- 3:45used already but not yet.
- 3:49So Jesus is speaking about the collapse
- 3:53of the temple but not primarily.
- 3:56So there are things that he's saying
- 3:57that are going to be fulfilled
- 4:00in the collapse of the temple but there
- 4:02are things that he's saying that cannot
- 4:04be fulfilled until the end of the age
- 4:06until he returns.
- 4:09And that's the main point of this
- 4:11chapter. So it's not a eitheror. It's
- 4:15both.
- 4:16when David was being persecuted and
- 4:19rebelled against by Abselum and he's
- 4:22hiding in a cave and and he says
- 4:25something like, "My God, my God, why
- 4:27hast thou forsaken me?" That's a
- 4:30prophetic utterance. Was that fulfilled
- 4:32on a certain level in his day when he
- 4:35was facing whatever the trial was that
- 4:37he faced? Yes, that prophecy was real in
- 4:41the moment in which it was spoken. But
- 4:44it was even more real when it was spoken
- 4:46by Jesus from the cross. That's when it
- 4:49was fully fulfilled.
- 4:52When the prophet speaks about
- 4:56the nation of Israel and says, "Out of
- 4:59Egypt I have called my son." Is he
- 5:02speaking about Moses being called out of
- 5:05Pharaoh's palace into Midian for 40
- 5:09years? Yes, that's a true statement
- 5:11about Moses. But is he also am more even
- 5:15more truthfully speaking about the
- 5:18children of Israel being called out by
- 5:20Moses into the wilderness and then
- 5:22ultimately into the promised land. Yes.
- 5:25Out of Egypt, I have called my son. And
- 5:29yet Matthew tells us it was ultimately
- 5:32speaking about Jesus. When Jesus was led
- 5:35by Joseph and Mary to Egypt to be saved
- 5:39from Herod and then when he's called
- 5:42back out of Egypt, I have called my son.
- 5:47This is an example of how prophecy is
- 5:49fulfilled in a greater and greater and
- 5:53greater manifestation of what was
- 5:55promised. So when we read Matthew 24,
- 5:59it's primarily pointing to the end of
- 6:02the age.
- 6:04But the disciples have connected the
- 6:06two. And so Jesus is speaking to both.
- 6:10[snorts] He's speaking to when the
- 6:11stones are going to be torn down and
- 6:13he's speaking to the end of the age.
- 6:16There's also a sense in which even when
- 6:18he's speaking about the stones being
- 6:20torn down, he's speaking about the end
- 6:22of the age. Because ultimately God does
- 6:26not live in temples made with human
- 6:28hands. And the only temple he cares
- 6:30about is the temple of his people. And
- 6:33the church is going to go through a
- 6:35collapse. The church is going to go
- 6:37through a tearing down. And the
- 6:39Jerusalem of God is going to go through
- 6:41trouble and tribulation.
- 6:44So when we think of this, when we bear
- 6:46this in mind and we read what he's
- 6:48saying,
- 6:50here are some markers that he's giving
- 6:53us.
- 6:54First thing he says is don't be misled
- 6:58because it's not going to come very
- 7:01soon. Don't be misled for the son of man
- 7:05won't come back as fast as you think.
- 7:08Then he says, don't think that when you
- 7:10hear of wars and rumors of wars, don't
- 7:12be frightened because the end is not
- 7:15yet.
- 7:17And then he says, "For nation will rise
- 7:21against nation and kingdom against
- 7:24kingdom in various places. There will be
- 7:27famines and earthquakes." So he's
- 7:29telling them this is more than what's
- 7:31happening in Jerusalem. Entire nations
- 7:34are going to rise up. And this word that
- 7:36he uses here is ethnos against ethnos.
- 7:40It's different than the word kingdom
- 7:42against kingdom. So he's what he's
- 7:44really saying is ethnicity will rise up
- 7:47against ethnicity.
- 7:49One of the signs of the end is racism.
- 7:52There will be ethnic groups rising
- 7:55against ethnic groups and tension
- 7:58because of ethnic nationality and
- 8:01kingdom will rise against kingdom.
- 8:03That's the more nationalistic political
- 8:06sense in which we use nation.
- 8:09But all these things are merely the
- 8:12beginning of birth panges. What are
- 8:15birth panges that he's speaking of here?
- 8:18Well, they're these intense pains that
- 8:21that come in greater and greater
- 8:23intensity and greater and greater
- 8:26frequency. And they are like the big one
- 8:29that gives birth, but they're not the
- 8:31big one. So he's saying there's going to
- 8:34be this intensification
- 8:36of trial as we get closer to the end.
- 8:39But he said it's not yet the end. And
- 8:41then he says they will deliver you to
- 8:44tribulation.
- 8:46So before the end we're going to be
- 8:48delivered to tribulation
- 8:52and they will kill you and you will be
- 8:54hated by all nations because of my name.
- 8:59So that is not describing the sacking of
- 9:02Jerusalem where they were hated in
- 9:04Jerusalem. Instead, he's speaking of the
- 9:06church being hated by all nations.
- 9:10When the church becomes the kingdom of
- 9:12God that God wants her to be, she is
- 9:15going to evoke the competition and
- 9:19rivalry and hatred of nations.
- 9:23She's going to be seen as a competing
- 9:25nation, even though spiritual and not
- 9:28political.
- 9:30At that time, many will fall away and
- 9:33betray one another and hate one another.
- 9:36This falling away is the apostasy. When
- 9:39tribulation gets horrible, when hatred
- 9:42becomes widespread,
- 9:44then the church is going to lose an
- 9:47enormous amount of its people. They're
- 9:50going to fall away.
- 9:53Many will fall away and betray one
- 9:55another and hate one another.
- 9:59Many false prophets will arise and
- 10:02mislead many. That's how the the church
- 10:04is going to fall away. They're going to
- 10:06think they're still following Christ,
- 10:08but they're following false prophets.
- 10:11They're following doctrines of demons
- 10:13that are still bearing the name of
- 10:15Christ, but are leading into the broad
- 10:17way that leads to destruction.
- 10:21Because lawlessness increases, that's
- 10:24sin. That's the tolerance of wicked
- 10:26behavior. People's most people's love
- 10:31will grow cold. So he says many will
- 10:33fall away. But then he says because the
- 10:36church allows sin, most people's love
- 10:40will grow cold. John will later tell us
- 10:43that this is how we know we've passed
- 10:45out of death into life because we love
- 10:47the brethren. But when we tolerate sin,
- 10:50when we don't stay in the narrow way,
- 10:53when we don't walk in humility and
- 10:55sanctification and strive and perfect
- 10:58holiness apart from which no one will
- 11:00see the Lord, there is a cooling, a
- 11:02chilling of love.
- 11:05And he says it's going to be most
- 11:07people. So most Christians are going to
- 11:10fall away at this time and a remnant is
- 11:13going to remain faithful. He says, "But
- 11:15the one who endures to the end, he will
- 11:18be saved.
- 11:20This gospel of the kingdom shall be
- 11:22preached in the whole world as a
- 11:24testimony to all nations and then the
- 11:25end will come." He does not say the
- 11:27gospel of personal salvation will be
- 11:29preached. He says the gospel, this
- 11:32gospel of the kingdom will be preached
- 11:35to all nations. Then the end will come
- 11:39when all the nations see this kingdom
- 11:41witness, this kingdom gospel, this
- 11:44corporate example, then the end will
- 11:46come. Therefore, when you see the
- 11:49abomination of desolation
- 11:52which was spoken of through Daniel the
- 11:54prophet standing in the holy place, let
- 11:57the reader understand.
- 12:00So, [clears throat] Matthew is writing
- 12:02here and he's quoting Jesus and Jesus is
- 12:05speaking. Matthew puts this
- 12:07parenthetical in. Let the reader
- 12:09understand.
- 12:11Please get this. He's saying Jesus says,
- 12:14"Therefore, when you see the abomination
- 12:16of desolation which was spoken of
- 12:19through Daniel the prophet standing in
- 12:21the holy place, let the reader
- 12:23understand, then those who are in Judea
- 12:26must flee to the mountains. Whoever is
- 12:29on the housetop must not go down to get
- 12:32the things out that are in the house.
- 12:35Whoever is in the field must not turn
- 12:37back to get his cloak.
- 12:39But woe to those who are pregnant and to
- 12:42those who are nursing babies in those
- 12:44days. But pray that your flight will not
- 12:47be in the winter or on the Sabbath.
- 12:50Then there will be a great tribulation
- 12:54such as has not occurred since the
- 12:56beginning of the world until now, nor
- 12:59ever will be. Unless those days had not
- 13:03been cut short, no life would have been
- 13:06saved. But for the sake of the elect,
- 13:08those days will be cut short. Then if
- 13:11anyone says to you, "Behold, here is the
- 13:14Christ," or, "There he is," do not
- 13:16believe him. For false Christs and false
- 13:20prophets will arise and will show great
- 13:22signs and wonders so as [snorts] to
- 13:24mislead, if possible, even the elect.
- 13:27Behold, I have told you in advance.
- 13:30So if they say to you, "Behold, he is in
- 13:32the wilderness," do not go out. Or,
- 13:35"Behold, he is in the inner rooms," do
- 13:37not believe them. For just as lightning
- 13:40comes from the east and flashes, even to
- 13:43the west, so will the coming of the Son
- 13:45of Man be. Wherever the corpse is, there
- 13:49the vultures will be gathered. There's a
- 13:51lot in this passage, but let's let's
- 13:54work through it quickly. First thing he
- 13:56says is, "Therefore, when you see the
- 13:59abomination of desolation, which was
- 14:02spoken of through Daniel the prophet,
- 14:04standing in the holy place, let the
- 14:07reader understand, then those who are in
- 14:10Judea must flee."
- 14:12So the abomination of desolation was
- 14:15spoken of by Daniel and it was fulfilled
- 14:17on a certain level when Antiochus
- 14:21Epiphanies
- 14:23conquered Jerusalem and you know went
- 14:26and sacrificed a pig in the temple. He
- 14:30desecrated the holy place. He went into
- 14:32the holy of holies. But we know that
- 14:36that temple was only a shadow and a type
- 14:40of the temple that Jesus was coming to
- 14:43establish. He told the woman at the
- 14:45well, "The hour is coming and now is
- 14:47when the true worshippers will worship
- 14:50neither on this mountain nor in
- 14:52Jerusalem." He told the disciples in
- 14:54this passage that not one stone of the
- 14:56temple would be left upon another. So
- 14:59that temple is not what he's primarily
- 15:01talking about. Instead, he's talking
- 15:03about to some extent the temple of our
- 15:06own lives, but really he's talking about
- 15:09the temple of the church. Paul says in
- 15:12Ephesians 2 that we are being built
- 15:14together as a temple of God, as a
- 15:17dwelling place for God. So, the church
- 15:19is going to invite an abomination
- 15:24into its house, into its sanctuary. It's
- 15:27going to put something in the place of
- 15:29God
- 15:31that where only the Lord should have
- 15:33sat. The church is going to welcome in
- 15:36an abomination that causes desolation.
- 15:40The desolation he's already spoken of at
- 15:43the end of the last chapter when he
- 15:45says, "Your house will be left to you
- 15:47desolate until you say, blessed is he
- 15:50who comes in the name of the Lord." And
- 15:52in that chapter we saw that the opposite
- 15:55of the name and authority of the Lord
- 15:58was the name and authority of man. So we
- 16:01can say that the the abomination of
- 16:04desolation is when the church brings in
- 16:08man as God. man's thoughts, man's
- 16:13principles, man's traditions, man's
- 16:16achievements, man's power, man's
- 16:19manipulation when it casts the glory and
- 16:22presence out of the temple of the
- 16:25church, the presence and glory of God is
- 16:28gone. And in its place is this
- 16:32exaltation of what man can do without
- 16:35God. That's ultimately the abomination
- 16:38of desolation. And then he is
- 16:41simultaneously talking about the sacking
- 16:43of Jerusalem and the end of the age. He
- 16:46tells them that they should not look
- 16:48back. They should go. They should flee.
- 16:51And this was a warning that the Jews
- 16:53heeded in 70 AD. The the Jewish
- 16:56Christians heeded. They there were about
- 16:59a 100,000 Christians in the region of
- 17:01Jerusalem. And Josephus says that none
- 17:04of them died in the sacking of Jerusalem
- 17:06by Titus when it fell because they
- 17:09heeded this warning.
- 17:11But then he's talking much bigger than
- 17:13that also. Then there will be great
- 17:16tribulation such as has not occurred
- 17:19since the beginning of the world until
- 17:21now, nor ever will be. So now we know
- 17:24he's not just talking about the sacking
- 17:26of Jerusalem. about 500,000 Jews were
- 17:29slaughtered in the sacking of Jerusalem,
- 17:31some estimates uh speculate. That's a
- 17:35horrible event. But how does that
- 17:37compare to the Holocaust when 6 million
- 17:40were exterminated under Nazism? So the
- 17:43sacking of Jerusalem was not the worst
- 17:45that the world had ever seen nor ever
- 17:47would see. The Holocaust is already
- 17:50worse. So it cannot be referring only to
- 17:54the sacking of Jerusalem or even
- 17:55primarily to that. That is merely a type
- 17:58of what is coming. There's going to be a
- 18:01tribulation that is worse than the
- 18:03sacking of Jerusalem. That is worse than
- 18:06the Holocaust. It's worse than anything
- 18:08the world has ever seen or can ever see
- 18:11again. He says unless those days have
- 18:14been cut short, no life would have been
- 18:17saved.
- 18:19But for the sake of the elect, those
- 18:21days will be cut short. That cannot be
- 18:24descriptive of what was happening in a
- 18:26very small corner of the world in
- 18:28Jerusalem. Nobody would have said,
- 18:30"Unless we cut this short, no life on
- 18:32earth is going to be saved." There's
- 18:34going to be a conflration
- 18:38of power and horror and war that is
- 18:42culminating the great tribulation that
- 18:44if it's not cut short, no life would be
- 18:47saved. And then he begins to speak about
- 18:50false Christs. And sure, there may have
- 18:53been false Jesuses in the days of the
- 18:56first century. But that's not primarily
- 18:59what he's referring to. He's talking
- 19:01about false expressions of Christ's
- 19:04salvation coming to us and saying,
- 19:08"Here's what the body of Christ is.
- 19:10Here's what the body of Christ is." And
- 19:12he's saying, "Don't don't do it and
- 19:14don't follow it." He's also talking
- 19:16about people claiming that the Lord is
- 19:17going to return.
- 19:20And then he says, "Wherever the corpse
- 19:22is, there the vultures will be
- 19:24gathered." So this is this is a picture
- 19:27of when the house is left desolate, when
- 19:29the church is destroyed, when the corpse
- 19:33is is destroyed and the kings of the
- 19:37earth rise up and devour the church as
- 19:40described in Revelations, the church
- 19:42that has become the harlot. There will
- 19:44be a corpse and the vultures, the
- 19:47eagles, the nations will gather over
- 19:50that corpse to to feed on the death. And
- 19:54this is the idea that, you know, long
- 19:58after the church has lost its life, long
- 20:02after the church has ceased to be the
- 20:04power and force that God intended, the
- 20:08nations will still be stealing from it
- 20:10all the things that made it special and
- 20:13co-opting those things to make their own
- 20:16messianic
- 20:17visions more compelling.
- 20:21But immediately after the tribulation of
- 20:24those days, after the tribulation of
- 20:28those days, the sun will be darkened.
- 20:32He's already said that it's going to be
- 20:34like lightning that flashes from the
- 20:36east to the west. This is this is what
- 20:39lightning does when there's a terrible
- 20:41storm coming and the the season is
- 20:44changing. But immediately after the
- 20:46tribulation of those days, the sun will
- 20:48be darkened and the moon will not give
- 20:51its light and the stars will fall from
- 20:54the sky and the powers of the heavens
- 20:57will be shaken. This does not describe
- 21:01the sacking of Jerusalem. This is the
- 21:04end of time when Jesus returns and he
- 21:08come this happens after the tribulation
- 21:11of those days. The sun will be darkened,
- 21:14the moon will not give its light, and
- 21:16the stars will fall from the sky, and
- 21:19the powers of the heavens will be
- 21:20shaken. And then the sign of the Son of
- 21:24Man will appear in the sky. And then all
- 21:27the tribes of the earth will mourn, and
- 21:30they will see the Son of Man coming on
- 21:32the clouds of the sky with power and
- 21:36great glory. And he will send forth his
- 21:40angels with a great trumpet and they
- 21:43will gather together his elect from the
- 21:45four winds from one end of the sky to
- 21:49the other. This is the rapture. This is
- 21:52when we are taken up to be with the Lord
- 21:55after the tribulation of those days.
- 22:00Now learn the parable from the fig tree.
- 22:03When its branch has already become
- 22:05tender and puts forth its leaves, you
- 22:10know that summer is near. So you too,
- 22:14when you see all these things, recognize
- 22:17that he is near, right at the door.
- 22:23The fig tree I told you stands for the
- 22:26Jewish nation.
- 22:28This is what we understand from Isaiah.
- 22:32The fig tree is symbolic of Israel.
- 22:36Okay? And so Jesus is saying, "You're
- 22:39wondering about when the end is going to
- 22:41come. When Israel becomes a tree, Israel
- 22:46was cut down in 70 AD. The people of
- 22:50Israel lost their land. They were chased
- 22:53to the four winds of the earth. But when
- 22:55Israel becomes a nation again and it
- 22:58looks like a fig tree that is green and
- 23:01flourishing, now you know that the end
- 23:04is drawing near. Israel's rebirth as a
- 23:07nation is like a fig tree becoming green
- 23:11in its branches. And that's the sign
- 23:14that we're moving relatively closer
- 23:17toward the Lord's return.
- 23:20Then he says, "Truly I say to you, this
- 23:22generation will not pass away until all
- 23:24these things take place."
- 23:27What does he mean by generation? The
- 23:30best rendering of the word generation
- 23:32here is race.
- 23:35And you say, "Well, what does that mean?
- 23:38Is he talking about the race of the
- 23:39Jews? This race will not pass away until
- 23:42all these things take place."
- 23:45That's possible. The other thing that is
- 23:47more likely is he's saying that Peter
- 23:51says he's saying what Peter said when he
- 23:53said you are a holy nation, a a holy
- 23:56race. You are a people. This this people
- 24:00who have received the spirit and are
- 24:03therefore part of the regeneration, part
- 24:06of the regenerated people of God. The
- 24:09church will not pass away until all
- 24:11these things take place. What he's not
- 24:14saying is that this group of people
- 24:16won't pass away until all these things
- 24:18take place. We know he cannot be saying
- 24:20that because
- 24:23the son of man did not return. The stars
- 24:25of the heaven did not fall. The sun was
- 24:28not darkened. The moon did not cease to
- 24:30give its glow.
- 24:32And the Lord didn't return. So this is
- 24:34not referring primarily to the sacking
- 24:36of Jerusalem. This is something that is
- 24:40coming. But the holy race, this new
- 24:44generation where we are all from every
- 24:47tribe, nation, and tongue, we are all
- 24:48becoming one in Christ. That people of
- 24:51God will not pass away until
- 24:55all these things take place. Heaven and
- 24:58earth will pass away, but my words will
- 25:01not pass away. So, he's making the the
- 25:04people who will not pass away the same
- 25:06as his word that will not pass away.
- 25:09What he's saying is the people of God
- 25:11will not all die. The people will remain
- 25:14alive. The elect will still be on the
- 25:16earth because they are the incarnation
- 25:19of his word. They are his word still
- 25:21becoming flesh.
- 25:23But of that day and hour, no one knows,
- 25:26not even the angels of heaven, nor the
- 25:28son, but the father alone. Now Jesus is
- 25:31the son, and he's saying of himself that
- 25:34he does not know that hour. And the
- 25:36reason he can say that is because in his
- 25:39ministry on earth, he was living in a
- 25:42state of canosis. What Paul is speaking
- 25:45of in Philippians 2, he has emptied
- 25:47himself of some of that knowledge in
- 25:50glor when he was glorified, there's no
- 25:52more emptying. So Jesus knows this hour.
- 25:55If he didn't, he would not be fully God.
- 25:58But he does know this hour now. But on
- 26:01earth, he had emptied himself of some of
- 26:04this knowledge so that he could make be
- 26:06made like us in every way. For the
- 26:08coming of the son of man will be just
- 26:10like the days of Noah.
- 26:13For in those days before the flood, they
- 26:16were eating and drinking, marrying,
- 26:20giving in marriage until the day that
- 26:22Noah entered the ark. And they did not
- 26:26understand
- 26:27until the flood came and took them all
- 26:32away.
- 26:35So will the coming of the son of man be.
- 26:38Then there will be two men in the field.
- 26:43One will be taken and one will be left.
- 26:48Two women will be grinding at the mill.
- 26:50One will be taken and the other will be
- 26:53left.
- 26:55A lot of people think that he's talking
- 26:57about
- 26:59the righteous being raptured out of the
- 27:01world, but that does not seem to be what
- 27:04he's talking about at all. He has
- 27:07already said that wherever the corpse
- 27:09is, there the vultures will be gathered.
- 27:13And that refers back to the days of Noah
- 27:16when he sent out a raven and the raven
- 27:22found death.
- 27:24When he sent out the dove, the dove kept
- 27:26coming back until he could find life. So
- 27:30the raven, the vultures represent
- 27:33those that are feeding on [snorts]
- 27:35the people who were taken on the dead
- 27:38body, on those who are no longer part of
- 27:42what God is doing. So what he's saying
- 27:45here is that in the days of Noah, the
- 27:49people did not understand until the
- 27:52flood took them away. The flood is the
- 27:57taker. judgment is the taker. And then
- 28:00he builds on that and he says it will be
- 28:02just like that in the coming of the son
- 28:03of man.
- 28:05He says that at the time of the coming
- 28:07of the son of man, it will be just like
- 28:09that. People will be going about their
- 28:12their life and they will be losing out.
- 28:15People will be taken from places of
- 28:17work. But he's talking about judgment is
- 28:20taking them like the flood is taking
- 28:22them. So he's not saying God's coming
- 28:24and snatching them away to heaven. He's
- 28:27saying that judgment and apostasy is
- 28:30taking them out of their walk with God.
- 28:34One will be taken like the flood took
- 28:37them all away. Therefore, be on the
- 28:40alert for you do not know which day your
- 28:43Lord is coming.
- 28:46But be sure of this. So, he's saying be
- 28:48on the alert because you don't want to
- 28:50be taken by the world. You don't want to
- 28:52be taken in the deceitfulness of sin
- 28:55because you don't know when the Lord is
- 28:57coming and he's going to come probably
- 28:59later than you expect. Therefore, be on
- 29:02the alert, for you do not know which day
- 29:04your Lord is coming. [clears throat] But
- 29:06be sure of this, that if the head of the
- 29:09house had known at what time of the
- 29:11night the thief was coming, he would
- 29:14have been on the alert and would have
- 29:16not have allowed his house to be broken
- 29:18into. Again, it's a judgment concept.
- 29:21the thief is coming and he's going to
- 29:23break into.
- 29:25For this reason, you also must be ready.
- 29:28And it's also we need to be ready for
- 29:30when Jesus comes. For the son of man is
- 29:33coming at an hour when you do not think
- 29:35he will.
- 29:37Who then is the faithful and sensible
- 29:39slave whom his master put in charge of
- 29:42his household to give them their food at
- 29:44the proper time? Blessed is that slave
- 29:47whom his master finds so doing when he
- 29:49comes.
- 29:51Truly I say to you that he will put him
- 29:54in charge of all his possessions. But if
- 29:56that evil slave says in his heart, "My
- 29:59master is not coming for a long time,"
- 30:02and begins to beat his fellow slaves and
- 30:05eat and drink with drunkards. The master
- 30:08of that slave will come on a day when he
- 30:11does not expect him, and at an hour
- 30:14which he does not know. and he will cut
- 30:16him in pieces and assign him a place
- 30:18with the hypocrites. In that place there
- 30:21will be weeping and nashing of teeth.
- 30:24And here he's speaking individually
- 30:26about how individually we can become
- 30:30lax. And instead of having this heart
- 30:34that says, Lord, I don't know when
- 30:35you're coming for me. I don't know when
- 30:38my personal life is ending. we can
- 30:40become lax and we can start to give way
- 30:44to dissipation, abusing others, taking
- 30:46advantage and and the Lord is going to
- 30:49come and cut us in pieces. That's
- 30:51judgment representing the death of the
- 30:55corpse that's going to gather the
- 30:56vultures yet again. So all of this in
- 31:00Matthew 24 needs to be understood as
- 31:04primarily a vision of the end of time.
- 31:06But there are aspects that are fulfilled
- 31:08in the collapse of Jerusalem. But he's
- 31:11telling us in the biggest themes he's
- 31:15saying it's not going to come as fast as
- 31:17you think. Nations are going to rise
- 31:20against nations.
- 31:22There's going to be wars in many places
- 31:25and the church is going to be hated by
- 31:27the nations because of his name. That
- 31:30lawlessness is going to abound. Many are
- 31:33going to fall away. The love of most is
- 31:35going to grow cold. [music] And this all
- 31:37aligns with what Paul teaches that the
- 31:39end will not come until the apostasy,
- 31:42the falling away comes first. The gospel
- 31:45of the kingdom will be preached to all
- 31:46nations. perilous times. The abomination
- 31:50of desolation is going to be in the holy
- 31:52place, the church. We're going to set
- 31:54man up in the place of God, showing him
- 31:56that he is God.
- 31:58The great tribulation is going to come
- 32:01immediately after the great tribulation.
- 32:04Then the sun is going to be darkened.
- 32:05The moon will not give its light. The
- 32:07stars of the heavens will fall. The
- 32:09powers of the heavens will be shaken.
- 32:12And then the sign of the son of man will
- 32:13appear. And he will send forth his
- 32:15angels to gather. so on and so forth.
- 32:18And we're going to know that this time
- 32:19is drawing near when we see Israel
- 32:21reborn like the fig tree and it becomes
- 32:24a nation again. We're getting closer to
- 32:27those days. Doesn't mean it's
- 32:28instantaneous. It could be hundreds of
- 32:30years. We don't know. But that day and
- 32:33hour, no one knows except the sun. But
- 32:35what we do [music] know is that it's
- 32:37going to be like Noah. People are not
- 32:39going to understand what they're getting
- 32:41into until they are individually taken
- 32:44and lost in the dissipation of apostasy.
- 32:48And the return of the Lord is also going
- 32:50to be like that. We're not going to know
- 32:51exactly when it happens. It's going to
- 32:53happen suddenly.
- 33:06>> [music]
