- 0:00Jesus summoned [music] his 12 disciples
- 0:02and gave them authority over unclean
- 0:05spirits to cast them out and to heal
- 0:09every kind of disease and every kind of
- 0:11sickness.
- 0:13Now the names of the twel apostles
- 0:15[music] are these. The first Simon who
- 0:18is called Peter and Andrew his brother
- 0:22and James the son of Zebedee and John
- 0:24his brother. Philip and Bartholomew,
- 0:27Thomas and [music] Matthew the tax
- 0:29collector, James the son of Alphus and
- 0:32Thaddius,
- 0:33Simon the Zealot and Judas Escariat, the
- 0:37one who betrayed him.
- 0:40These 12 Jesus sent out after
- 0:43instructing them, "Do not go in the way
- 0:46of the Gentiles, and do not enter any
- 0:50city of the Samaritans, but rather go to
- 0:53the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
- 0:55And as you go, preach, saying, The
- 0:59kingdom of heaven is at hand.
- 1:02Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse
- 1:06the lepers, cast out demons.
- 1:10Freely you have received. Freely give.
- 1:17Do not acquire gold or silver or copper
- 1:20for your money belts or a bag for your
- 1:23journey or even two coats or sandals or
- 1:28a staff. For the worker is worthy of his
- 1:31support.
- 1:33And whatever city or village you enter,
- 1:37inquire who is worthy in it and stay at
- 1:40his house until you leave that city.
- 1:45As you enter the house, give it your
- 1:47greeting.
- 1:49If the house is worthy, give it your
- 1:51blessing of peace.
- 1:54But if it is not worthy, take back your
- 1:56blessing of peace.
- 1:59Whoever does not receive you nor heed
- 2:01your words as you go out of that house
- 2:05or that city, shake the dust off your
- 2:08feet.
- 2:10Truly, I say to you, it will be more
- 2:12tolerable for the land of Sodom and
- 2:14Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for
- 2:17that city."
- 2:20So
- 2:21right here we're seeing
- 2:24Matthew describe the 12 apostles,
- 2:28apostles of the lamb. There were only
- 2:3112. Judas became a betrayer and so they
- 2:34replaced him so that there would only
- 2:36ever be 12.
- 2:39And there will only ever be 12. Nobody
- 2:41can ever be an apostle of the lamb.
- 2:43[music] They had a very specific calling
- 2:45as those who knew the Lord, as those who
- 2:48received his teaching firsthand, and as
- 2:51those who had the mission of taking it
- 2:53to the rest of the world. And in this
- 2:56scenario, this is his first exercise in
- 3:00ministry and he's giving them the grace,
- 3:03[clears throat] the power, the
- 3:04instructions.
- 3:06One of the more notable things here is
- 3:08the discussion about the house and the
- 3:11greeting and the blessing and the
- 3:13worthiness.
- 3:15And
- 3:17it's an interesting equation because we
- 3:20think that worthy means that we are
- 3:23better than other people. But that's not
- 3:26what worthy means here. Worthy means we
- 3:29are humble and receptive to those whom
- 3:33God sends even when they show up in
- 3:36forms we don't expect. Worthy means we
- 3:40recognize the voice of God even when it
- 3:43comes looking like Peter or Andrew or
- 3:45Matthew the former tax collector.
- 3:48And when when we receive the messenger
- 3:52of God in that manner, then there is a
- 3:55blessing of peace that comes on us. When
- 3:59we say blessed is he that comes in the
- 4:01name of the Lord, then we learn what
- 4:04makes for our peace. There is a grace of
- 4:08shalom. There is an ordering of that
- 4:11house. There is a rhythm in that house.
- 4:14There is a healing, a forgiveness, a
- 4:17joy, a love in that house that comes
- 4:21from accepting
- 4:24the messenger that the Lord would send.
- 4:26Certainly the apostles, but sometimes
- 4:29far less than they.
- 4:32Behold, I send you out as sheep in the
- 4:34midst of wolves. So be shrewd as
- 4:36serpents and innocent as doves.
- 4:40But beware of men,
- 4:42for they will hand you over to the
- 4:44courts and scourge you in their
- 4:46synagogues,
- 4:48and you will even be brought before
- 4:50governors and kings for my sake as a
- 4:54testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
- 4:58Now Jesus is speaking beyond that
- 5:00focused commission that he started with
- 5:02and now he's talking about all of us
- 5:03because he told the focused commission,
- 5:05don't go to the Gentiles. Now he's
- 5:08saying you will be taken to the
- 5:09Gentiles. So it's bigger than than the
- 5:13focused commission.
- 5:15But when they hand you over, do not
- 5:17worry about how or what you are to say.
- 5:20For it will be given you in that hour
- 5:22what you are to say.
- 5:25For it is not you who speak, but it is
- 5:27the spirit of your father who speaks in
- 5:30you.
- 5:32Brother will betray brother to death and
- 5:34a father his child. and children will
- 5:38rise up against parents and cause them
- 5:40to be put to death.
- 5:43You will be hated by all because of my
- 5:45name, but it is the one who has endured
- 5:48to the end who will be saved.
- 5:52But whenever they persecute you in one
- 5:54city, flee to the next.
- 5:57For truly I say to you, you will not
- 5:59finish going through the cities of
- 6:01Israel until the Son of Man comes.
- 6:06So this is now more prophetic
- 6:08instruction
- 6:10of the ministry of the church even after
- 6:13Jesus has departed.
- 6:15And in this section there are several
- 6:17things that that are very powerful.
- 6:21One of the things is Jesus says that
- 6:24when you are put on the spot and asked
- 6:28to give a witness, do not be anxious or
- 6:32worry about how you are going to
- 6:34perform.
- 6:35Why? Because it will not be you
- 6:39speaking,
- 6:41but it will be given you what you should
- 6:44say.
- 6:46So there is this sense in which he's
- 6:48telling us we will be speaking it will
- 6:51not be us speaking
- 6:54and if you understand that you
- 6:56understand the principle of anointing
- 6:58and inspiration
- 7:01and you even understand the secret to
- 7:03the whole conflict between grace and
- 7:06works
- 7:09because the grace of God does not
- 7:11preclude human activity. ity.
- 7:15It pre it precludes human activity that
- 7:18is just human activity but it allows for
- 7:22God to work in us to will and do his
- 7:25good pleasure.
- 7:28So we can say it is not me but God is
- 7:31using me.
- 7:33That's the works that Matthew spoke of
- 7:36when he said when he quoted Jesus, "Let
- 7:39your light so shine before men that they
- 7:42may see your good works and glorify
- 7:44someone else, your father in heaven."
- 7:46How does he say it will not be you
- 7:49speaking,
- 7:50but it will be given you what you should
- 7:52say. Does that mean we won't open our
- 7:54mouths or utter words? No. No, it means
- 7:56we won't do it on our inspiration, on
- 8:00our courage, on our insight, on our
- 8:03wisdom. It won't be us.
- 8:07But these are the works that God has
- 8:09prepared before the foundation of the
- 8:11world that we should walk in. These are
- 8:13the works of God and not of men.
- 8:17A disciple is not above his teacher, nor
- 8:19a slave above his master. It is enough
- 8:21for the disciple that he become like his
- 8:23teacher and the slave like his master.
- 8:27If they called the head of the house be
- 8:29elbub, how much more will they malign
- 8:32the members of his household?
- 8:34Therefore, do not fear them. For there
- 8:37is nothing concealed that will not be
- 8:40revealed or hidden that will not be made
- 8:42known.
- 8:43What I tell you in the darkness, speak
- 8:45in the light. And what you hear
- 8:47whispered in the ear, proclaim upon the
- 8:50rooftops.
- 8:52Do not fear those who kill the body but
- 8:54are unable to kill the soul but rather
- 8:57fear him who is able to destroy both
- 8:59body and soul in hell.
- 9:03Okay. So in this equation Jesus has just
- 9:08said in the previous section that
- 9:13his will his purpose and his message is
- 9:17going to cause trouble.
- 9:19And where is that trouble going to show
- 9:20up? In your own house. A man's enemies
- 9:23will be those of his own household.
- 9:25Brother will betray brother and cause
- 9:27them to be put to death. It's not going
- 9:29to be a foreign enemy coming from over
- 9:31the sea. It's going to be your friend.
- 9:33It's going to be your brother. It's
- 9:35going to be your children, your parents.
- 9:38And what that wants to do to us is make
- 9:40us hide in fear. And so Jesus starts
- 9:43this next section by saying, "You're not
- 9:47better than your master. It's enough for
- 9:50you to be like your master." And so when
- 9:51you see how mean they treat me, know
- 9:54they're going to treat you worse.
- 9:57They're going to treat you worse.
- 10:00And his answer to this treatment is,
- 10:02"Therefore, do not fear them."
- 10:06And then he says, "For there is nothing
- 10:09concealed which will not be revealed or
- 10:11hidden that will not be disclosed." And
- 10:13what do you think he's talking about?
- 10:15Is God going to one day disclose all of
- 10:18our rebellion and sin if we don't
- 10:20repent? Yes. But that's not what he's
- 10:22talking about. He's saying, "Don't fear
- 10:25them because they can't hide your
- 10:27message.
- 10:29I've put truth inside of you and they
- 10:31can't conceal it. I've put promise
- 10:34inside of you and they can't hide it.
- 10:37Listen, let me prove it. There is
- 10:39nothing hidden that will not be there is
- 10:41nothing concealed that will not be
- 10:43revealed or hidden that will not be made
- 10:44known. What I tell you in the darkness
- 10:49that's hidden that's concealed. Speak in
- 10:53the light and what you hear as from
- 10:57Jesus whispered in your ear or whispered
- 11:00from the Holy Spirit. Proclaim upon the
- 11:03housetops.
- 11:04Climb up on the top of your roof and
- 11:08raise your voice and speak the truth.
- 11:12Speak the message.
- 11:15And don't let fear silence the hope that
- 11:19God has hidden in you. This is where
- 11:23it's hidden. This is where it's
- 11:25concealed. And this is where it's
- 11:27revealed. The light of your example of
- 11:31your life is where it's revealed.
- 11:35And he goes on, he says what he said
- 11:37earlier in the biatitude. Remember he
- 11:38says here,
- 11:40"Are not two sparrows sold for a scent?
- 11:44And yet not one of them will fall to the
- 11:46ground apart from your father.
- 11:48But the very hairs of your head are all
- 11:50numbered. So do not fear. You are more
- 11:54valuable than many sparrows. He does say
- 11:56that there's one that we should fear.
- 12:00There's a wrong kind of fear. It's the
- 12:02fear of man.
- 12:04It's what am I going to suffer if I do
- 12:06what is right? That's the wrong kind of
- 12:08fear. But he says, I'll tell you who you
- 12:10should fear.
- 12:12Fear him who [clears throat] can destroy
- 12:14both body and soul in hell. Who is that?
- 12:17That's God.
- 12:19The only one we should fear is God. I am
- 12:22afraid to dishonor you, to disobey you
- 12:26because I know that kind of cowardice
- 12:29will place me outside the gates. That
- 12:32kind of cowardice puts me on the
- 12:34Broadway that leads to destruction. That
- 12:37kind of cowardice makes me in danger of
- 12:40body and soul being destroyed in hell.
- 12:44This is also a reminder that what we
- 12:46suffer in hell will be a physical pain,
- 12:49not merely a mental or disembodied pain.
- 12:54It will be a a visceral pain. Body and
- 12:58soul in hell.
- 13:02So do not fear. You are more valuable
- 13:05than many sparrows. Therefore, everyone
- 13:08who confesses me before men, I also will
- 13:12confess him before my father who is in
- 13:15heaven.
- 13:16But whoever denies me before men, I will
- 13:20also deny him before my father who is in
- 13:24heaven. Do not think that I came to
- 13:29bring peace on the earth. I did not come
- 13:32to bring peace, but a sword.
- 13:35For I came to set a man against his
- 13:37father, and a daughter [clears throat]
- 13:39against her mother, and a
- 13:40daughter-in-law against her
- 13:41mother-in-law, and a man's enemies will
- 13:44be the members of his household.
- 13:47He who loves father or mother more than
- 13:49me is not worthy of me.
- 13:53And he who loves son or daughter more
- 13:54than me is not worthy of me.
- 13:57And he who does not take up his cross
- 13:59and follow me is not worthy of me. He
- 14:03who has found his life will lose it. And
- 14:06he who has lost his life for my sake
- 14:09will find it. We started this chapter
- 14:12with Jesus telling the disciples to look
- 14:14for houses that are worthy. And now we
- 14:17get into who's worthy. If you love
- 14:21anything more than him, more than his
- 14:24appearing at your doorstep, you're not
- 14:26worthy.
- 14:28But if you speak and confess and live
- 14:32out the change he's worked in your life,
- 14:35you're worthy.
- 14:37But if you deny him, he's going to deny
- 14:39you. And and the the thing that's going
- 14:42to make us afraid is if we think that he
- 14:46came to make our life easy
- 14:49and then we are shocked when it becomes
- 14:51very hard. So Jesus uses this phrase do
- 14:55not think
- 14:57and that just means in the Greek don't
- 14:59imagine don't have a fantasy that I came
- 15:03to make your life calm.
- 15:06I did not come for that reason. I came
- 15:08to make it warlike.
- 15:10And if you're not ready for war, you're
- 15:13not ready to be mine.
- 15:15Because you're going to find this war in
- 15:17your house. You're going to find it with
- 15:19your relatives. You're going to find it
- 15:21in the streets. You're going to find it
- 15:23in your culture. You're going to find it
- 15:26in your own heart
- 15:28as there's a war that Paul says is
- 15:30raging inside of us. So, you can't have
- 15:33an expectation. Do not think that you
- 15:36became a Christian for everything to
- 15:39become easy and calm. You became a
- 15:41Christian so that you could have the
- 15:43power over him who was destroying you,
- 15:46over him who was killing you. That is
- 15:49sin [music] and the devil. But it's not
- 15:51going to be easy. But he's going to be
- 15:54with you.
- 15:56He who receives you receives me. And he
- 16:00who receives me receives him who sent
- 16:02me. He who receives a prophet in the
- 16:05name of a prophet shall receive a
- 16:07prophet's reward. And he who receives a
- 16:10[music] righteous man in the name of a
- 16:12righteous man shall receive a righteous
- 16:14man's reward.
- 16:16And whoever [music]
- 16:17in the name of a disciple gives to one
- 16:20of these little ones even a cup of cold
- 16:22water to drink, truly I say to you, he
- 16:25shall not lose his reward. Let me unpack
- 16:28this and then we'll be done with this
- 16:29chapter.
- 16:31He finishes here where he started.
- 16:34Whoever receives you, whoever welcomes
- 16:37the ministry of Christ into their life
- 16:40is not receiving the person but Jesus
- 16:44the father who sent him.
- 16:47And then he says, "But you're going to
- 16:49speak things." And when people act on
- 16:52the things that you speak, it can be as
- 16:54small as giving a cup of water in a
- 16:58disciple's name or authority. and
- 17:00[music] you're going to get the same
- 17:01reward as the disciple who came to your
- 17:04village. So if you go hear Peter preach
- 17:07and he preaches on love, loving your
- 17:09neighbor, and you realize you could love
- 17:11your neighbor by giving them a cup of
- 17:12cold water in the name and authority of
- 17:15Peter who preached, then you're going to
- 17:17get the same reward as Peter who went to
- 17:19your town. That's how God looks at
- 17:22acting on his word. Whether it's
- 17:25speaking it as a message, living it as a
- 17:28lifestyle, giving it in expressions of
- 17:31love, don't conceal [music] it. Reveal
- 17:34it. Don't disclose it. Don't hide it.
- 17:38Only be afraid not of being thought evil
- 17:42or mistreated by the world. But be
- 17:44afraid of denying the Lord because you
- 17:47don't want him to deny you before the
- 17:49father.
