- 2:02Messiah.
- 2:04So all the generations from Abraham to
- 2:06David are 14 generations.
- 2:09From David to the deportation to Babylon
- 2:1314 generations. [music]
- 2:14and from the deportation to Babylon to
- 2:16the Messiah, 14 generations. [music]
- 2:20Well, what has Matthew just done in this
- 2:23first [music] section of his book? We
- 2:25are told that Matthew's gospel is the
- 2:27Jewish [music] gospel, meaning that he
- 2:29is writing from the Jewish perspective,
- 2:33which is a covenantal perspective, and
- 2:35he's writing it to Jewish people. And so
- 2:38it's very important that he anchors the
- 2:42Messiah in the story of what has come
- 2:45before. So Matthew is trying to tell
- 2:50the readers of the New Testament that
- 2:53the God who has revealed himself in
- 2:56Messiah is not doing a strange thing. He
- 3:00is doing something deeply anchored in
- 3:02what came before. He has given us two
- 3:05distinct patriarchal lines that Jesus is
- 3:09descending from. One is Abraham and one
- 3:12is David. Abraham is the covenant of
- 3:15promise
- 3:17and David is the royal covenant, the
- 3:20kingly covenant. And so these two
- 3:23covenants are coming together in the
- 3:26life of Messiah. So all these all of
- 3:29this is to say what God is doing through
- 3:32Messiah is consistent with the covenant
- 3:35he has made to Abraham and to David. And
- 3:39that promise is consistent throughout.
- 3:42Something else that we notice in here is
- 3:44that Matthew does not hide from the
- 3:48reader the brokenness of the story. He
- 3:52includes tragic situations like Tamar,
- 3:56like Basheba. He he includes sinners and
- 4:00failures like David and Solomon and
- 4:03Rahab the harlot because he's trying to
- 4:06tell us that
- 4:08God has come to be with us to make
- 4:12covenant with the brokenness of our
- 4:14humanity and that in his flesh Jesus is
- 4:18the offspring and and family member of
- 4:22this broken generation of these broken
- 4:25people. So he doesn't whitewash it for
- 4:27us because God isn't here to do
- 4:29something strange. He's here to work
- 4:31redemption through the the coming of
- 4:34Messiah. So now we go into the next
- 4:36section of this same chapter beginning
- 4:38in verse 18. Now the birth of Jesus
- 4:41Christ was as follows. When his mother
- 4:44Mary had been betrothed to Joseph,
- 4:48before they came together, she was found
- 4:50to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And
- 4:55Joseph, her husband, being a righteous
- 4:58man, and not wanting to disgrace her,
- 5:01planned to send her away secretly.
- 5:05But when he had considered this, behold,
- 5:08an angel of the Lord appeared to him in
- 5:10a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David,
- 5:13do not be afraid to take Mary as your
- 5:15wife, for the child who has been
- 5:19conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
- 5:24She will bear a son, and you shall call
- 5:26his name Jesus, for he will save his
- 5:30people from their sins.
- 5:33Now, all this took place to fulfill what
- 5:36was spoken by the Lord through the
- 5:39prophet. Behold, the virgin shall be
- 5:42with child and shall bear a son, and
- 5:45they shall call his name Emmanuel, which
- 5:48translated means God with us. And Joseph
- 5:53awoke from his sleep and did as the
- 5:56angel of the Lord commanded him and took
- 5:59Mary as his wife, but kept her a virgin
- 6:03until she gave birth to a son, and he
- 6:06called his name Jesus. There's a couple
- 6:10things that that we need to focus on
- 6:12here. one, Matthew starts in that first
- 6:17section by showing us how Jesus is
- 6:21connected to the lineage of a sinful,
- 6:25broken family, but a covenant family.
- 6:28And he focuses on two covenants, the
- 6:31Abrahamic covenant and the Davidic
- 6:33covenant. And then in the next section,
- 6:36he starts to bring in the other part of
- 6:38Jesus's nature that Jesus was conceived
- 6:42by God. And in this part, he tells us
- 6:46several things that are very
- 6:48interesting.
- 6:50He tells us that she was found to be
- 6:52with child by the Holy Spirit. The Holy
- 6:56Spirit fathered Jesus.
- 7:00And then he says that Joseph
- 7:02was disturbed understandably that his
- 7:06fiance
- 7:08is pregnant.
- 7:10But it says that because he was a
- 7:13righteous man, he did not want to shame
- 7:16her but to put her away quietly.
- 7:20And this is an insight into how the Lord
- 7:23views righteousness. In this instance,
- 7:25Joseph Joseph's righteousness is
- 7:28restraint.
- 7:29Joseph's righteousness does not champion
- 7:32other people's faults or take pleasure
- 7:36in embarrassing them publicly. So even
- 7:38though he is hurt, even though he feels
- 7:42embarrassed,
- 7:44he does not want to embarrass Mary
- 7:47through this scandal.
- 7:49So he's going to put her away quietly to
- 7:52preserve her dignity.
- 7:55And the Bible calls that righteous.
- 7:58And then it says that this righteous man
- 8:01who had this attitude of respect and
- 8:04kindness receives a visitation from God.
- 8:08An angel [music] comes to him and says,
- 8:12"Do not be afraid."
- 8:14He understood that Joseph was afraid to
- 8:18do the right thing and be [music]
- 8:21thought evil for doing it.
- 8:23He was afraid to accept Mary as [music]
- 8:26his wife after this scandal of her
- 8:28pregnancy. But the Holy Spirit says,
- 8:31[music] "Don't be afraid to take Mary as
- 8:33your wife because that which is
- 8:36conceived in her is from the Holy
- 8:38Spirit." Again, telling us that the Holy
- 8:41Spirit is the father of Jesus.
- 8:45And he says [music] that this is
- 8:47fulfilling prophecy. So the first part
- 8:50of Matthew ties us to the lineage of the
- 8:52Jewish family and the second part ties
- 8:55us to the Holy Spirit and the prophecies
- 8:58of the [music] old covenant. The virgin
- 9:00shall be with child and he you will call
- 9:03his name Jesus. You will he says that
- 9:06the prophecy says [music] his name will
- 9:08be Emmanuel which means God with us. God
- 9:12is not distant in heaven anymore. God is
- 9:15not far away and unknowable. God is near
- 9:18at hand. God is [music] with us. And he
- 9:20says, "You will call his name Jesus
- 9:23because he will save his people from
- 9:26their sin." So that's an insight into
- 9:30what the name Jesus [music] means. The
- 9:33Hebrew version of Jesus is Yeshua.
- 9:37And Yeshua
- 9:39in our English is translated as Joshua.
- 9:43But they would not have said the J sound
- 9:45because Hebrew didn't say that. So they
- 9:48would have said Yesua.
- 9:50And Yeshua comes from two [music] words,
- 9:53Yahweh and Hosa.
- 9:57So Yahweh has become salvation. Hosa
- 10:01means salvation. And when those two
- 10:03words Yahweh and salvation come
- 10:05together, we have
- 10:08Yahweh [music] becoming salvation. So
- 10:11when he says, "Call him Jesus, for he
- 10:14will save his people from their sins,"
- 10:16he's telling us that his name means
- 10:19salvation.
- 10:22[music]
