- 0:00I don't usually overhype myself but in
- 0:02this video we're going over the only
- 0:03formula you will ever need to master
- 0:06prompting on chat BT and Google bard so
- 0:09let's get started hey friends welcome
- 0:11back to channel if you're new here my
- 0:12name is Jeff I work full-time in Tech
- 0:14and if you're anything like me a couple
- 0:15months ago you know prompting is an
- 0:17important skill to learn but you're not
- 0:19exactly sure why some prompts generate
- 0:22outputs that are super generic While
- 0:24others give you precisely what you're
- 0:26looking for since then I've spent
- 0:27hundreds of hours taking prompt
- 0:29engineering courses and applying what
- 0:30I've learned in my daily life and so in
- 0:33this video I'm sharing these six
- 0:34building blocks that make up a good
- 0:35prompt so that you can use this formula
- 0:38to consistently generate high quality
- 0:41outputs first it's critical to not only
- 0:43know what the six components are task
- 0:45context exemplars Persona format and
- 0:47tone but also know that there's an order
- 0:50of importance to these six components to
- 0:53show you what I mean let's use this
- 0:54simple example I'm a 70kg male give me a
- 0:573-month training program the first part
- 0:59is context followed by the task the
- 1:01reason why the task is higher up in the
- 1:03formula hierarchy is if we just input
- 1:05the task without the context there's
- 1:07still some sort of meaningful output but
- 1:09if we just give Chachi PT the context
- 1:12nothing really happens put another way
- 1:14it's mandatory to have a task in your
- 1:16prompt it's important to include
- 1:18relevant context and exemplars and it's
- 1:21nice to have Persona format and tone
- 1:23when you think of writing your prompt go
- 1:26down this mental checklist so this
- 1:28formula will act as a constant reminder
- 1:30for you to include just enough relevant
- 1:32information when writing prompts and as
- 1:34you'll see in this next part you do not
- 1:36need all six components in every prompt
- 1:39to have a good output now let's break
- 1:41down each building block with specific
- 1:42examples starting with the task the rule
- 1:44of thumb is to always start the task
- 1:46sentence with an action verb generate
- 1:49give write analyze Etc and clearly
- 1:51articulate what your end goal is it
- 1:54could be one simple task like generating
- 1:56a three-month training program or a
- 1:58complex three-step task like analyzing
- 2:01hundreds of user feedback sharing the
- 2:03top three takeaways and categorizing the
- 2:05feedback based on the team responsible
- 2:07for following off the second component
- 2:09context is the trickiest to get right
- 2:11because technically there's an infinite
- 2:13amount of information you can give so I
- 2:15found asking myself these three
- 2:17questions to be super helpful in coming
- 2:19up with just enough information to get a
- 2:21good result from Chachi BT first what's
- 2:24the user's background second what do
- 2:26success look like and third what
- 2:28environment are they in back to the
- 2:30workout example we now have I'm a 70kg
- 2:33male looking to put on 5 kg of muscle
- 2:35mass over the next 3 months I only have
- 2:37time to go to the gym twice a week and
- 2:38for 1 hour each session give me a 3month
- 2:41training program to follow could I have
- 2:43added more background information of
- 2:45course only prioritize the muscle groups
- 2:47that make me look good at
- 2:48Instagram but the key to staying
- 2:50productive with chat gbtm Bard is giving
- 2:53just enough information to constrain the
- 2:55endless possibilities by the way
- 2:57although this video is not sponsored it
- 2:58is supported by those of you you who
- 3:00subscribe to my paid positivity
- 3:01newsletter on Google workspace tips Link
- 3:03in the description to learn more moving
- 3:05over to the exemplars component it's
- 3:07just a fancy way of saying examples
- 3:10basically all the research on large
- 3:11language models llms have shown that
- 3:13including examples within the prompt
- 3:16drastically improves the quality of the
- 3:19output starting with a simple example
- 3:21this is a py written bullet point from a
- 3:23resume we can now ask chat GPT to
- 3:26rewrite this bullet point using this
- 3:28structure I accomplish X by to measure y
- 3:30that resulted in Z which is actually
- 3:32best practice by the way so actually do
- 3:33this in your resume for example I
- 3:35lowered Hospital mortality rate by 10%
- 3:37by educating nurses in new protocols
- 3:39which translates to 200 lives saved per
- 3:41year here's a slightly more complicated
- 3:44example for interview prep based on my
- 3:46own resume write me an answer to the
- 3:48interview question what's your biggest
- 3:49weakness use the star answer framework
- 3:52situation task action and results here
- 3:55instead of using a full-blown interview
- 3:56answer as an example which would be
- 3:58Overkill the star framework acts as an
- 4:01example structure for chat gbt to follow
- 4:04last example let's say you need to write
- 4:05a job description you give some context
- 4:07around the opening and ask chat apt to
- 4:09reference an existing job description if
- 4:11I use this one I found on LinkedIn the
- 4:13output will follow the same formatting
- 4:15and use the same professional hre
- 4:17language saving me a bunch of time main
- 4:20takeaway here exemplars are not
- 4:22necessary for every prompt but including
- 4:24a relevant example or framework will
- 4:27greatly improve the quality of your
- 4:29output moving along the Persona
- 4:31component is basically who you want cha
- 4:33PT and bar to be and the pro tip here is
- 4:36to think of someone you wish you had
- 4:38instant access to with the task you're
- 4:40facing if you injured yourself working
- 4:42out that person might be a physical
- 4:43therapist with experience helping
- 4:45athletes recover if you're a jobseeker
- 4:47that person might be a recruiter or Hing
- 4:49manager if you're working on a creative
- 4:51brief that person might be a senior
- 4:52product marketing manager who's great at
- 4:54storytelling Pro tip you can also name
- 4:57specific individuals but I found the
- 4:58results to be good only when they're
- 5:00famous enough like Warren Buffett Steve
- 5:02Jobs Jeff
- 5:04Sue by the way I just have to share this
- 5:06we have a team offsite with a
- 5:07superheroes theme so I asked Chach PT to
- 5:09draft an email from Batman and it even
- 5:11included things like please let Alfred
- 5:13know and signed off as The Dark Knight
- 5:16um so fictional characters work as well
- 5:18and I'm actually going to use this the
- 5:19fifth component format the pro tip here
- 5:22is to literally close your eyes and
- 5:24visualize how exactly you want the end
- 5:26result to look like a million likes on
- 5:28my thir bomb Instagram photo damn it
- 5:30didn't work back to the user feedback
- 5:32example I don't want to read each
- 5:34sentence so I asked chachy BT to take
- 5:36all the feedback and output a table with
- 5:38three headers the original feedback the
- 5:41team responsible for following up and
- 5:43priority and now I can copy this
- 5:46directly and paste it into a Google
- 5:48sheet store by priority and filter by
- 5:51team other common formats include emails
- 5:53bullet points and code blocks but the
- 5:55one I found to be the most useful as a
- 5:57full-time working professional is
- 5:58paragraphs and and markdown for example
- 6:01I just received a lengthy industry
- 6:02report from my director first give me
- 6:04the three key takeaways then summarize
- 6:06based on topic use H2 as section headers
- 6:10here is the report Pro tip whenever I
- 6:11use chash gbt to proofread any document
- 6:14I specify that all changes need to be
- 6:16bolded so I can easily see exactly what
- 6:19has been changed let's quickly go
- 6:21through the last component tone before
- 6:23we put all this together in one example
- 6:25the good news is tone is easy to
- 6:27understand use a casual or formal tone
- 6:29of voice give me a witty output uh show
- 6:33enthusiasm sound pessimistic the bad
- 6:36news is we're usually not very good at
- 6:38recalling the thousands of potential
- 6:40adjectives and adverbs at a moment's
- 6:42notice so here's a pro tip tell tra BT
- 6:45the feeling you're going for for example
- 6:47I'm writing an email to a team I haven't
- 6:49worked with before and I want to be
- 6:50taken seriously without coming off as
- 6:52too stuck up and cringey can you please
- 6:55give me a list of five tone keywords I
- 6:57can include in a prompt for chbt and
- 6:59look now in the actual prompt I can say
- 7:01use clear and concise language and write
- 7:04in a friendly yet confident tone putting
- 7:06all this together let's look at this
- 7:08comprehensive prompt you are a senior
- 7:10product marketing manager at Apple
- 7:12Persona and you have just unveiled the
- 7:14latest Apple product in collaboration
- 7:16with Tesla the Apple car and received
- 7:1812,000 pre-orders which is 200% higher
- 7:20than Target context write an email to
- 7:23your boss Tim cookie sharing this
- 7:25positive news task and format the email
- 7:28should include a tldr tool long didn't
- 7:30read section project background why this
- 7:32product came into existence business
- 7:34results section quantifiable business
- 7:36metrics and end with a section thanking
- 7:39the product and Engineering teams
- 7:41example structure use clear and concise
- 7:44language and write in a confident yet
- 7:46friendly tone tone note that if I had an
- 7:49existing email to reference I could
- 7:50delete the instructions around the
- 7:53structure and simply tell chbt the email
- 7:56should follow the exact same format as
- 7:57the one I will share below and paste the
- 8:00email from before by the way you can
- 8:02compare the output from this prompt to
- 8:03that of a simpler prompt I just launched
- 8:06a new product the Apple car I received
- 8:0812,000 pre-orders please run an email to
- 8:10my boss with this update there's a
- 8:12pretty big difference in terms of how
- 8:13generic and usable the end result is now
