Master Interior Design Millwork FAST | Build a Reusable Repository — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:04Custom millwork is one of the most
- 0:05impactful parts of an interior design
- 0:07project. Cabinetry, joinery, built-in
- 0:10[music] storage, these elements define
- 0:12how a space actually functions. But
- 0:14they're also where [music] the designers
- 0:15tend to lose the most time on the
- 0:16drawing board. Every project starts with
- 0:18the same process, redrawing [music]
- 0:20cabinets, redrawing shelving, redrawing
- 0:22details that are actually just very
- 0:24similar to the last project. So, in this
- 0:26video I want to show a different
- 0:27approach. Instead of redrawing millwork
- 0:30from scratch every time, we'll start to
- 0:31build a reusable repository. A system
- 0:34[music] where your cabinetry drawings,
- 0:35joinery details, and design ideas
- 0:37compound over time. I'll walk through
- 0:39how to import an existing drawing, turn
- 0:41it into a flexible template, and build a
- 0:43library that you can reuse across
- 0:44projects. If you want to follow along,
- 0:46there's a link in the description where
- 0:47you can create a free Rayon account. So,
- 0:49let's dive into it.
- 0:53So, the first thing that we're going to
- 0:53do is import an existing DWG floor plan.
- 0:56Where we start identifying certain
- 0:58elements, certain millwork that we want
- 1:00to create a repository from. And
- 1:02importing a DWG is really simple. Head
- 1:04to the top left corner, we'll import it
- 1:06into Rayon. You can then set the scale,
- 1:09make sure that it's correct scale,
- 1:11import it, [music] and then you can see
- 1:12here now we have a floor plan. Looks a
- 1:14little bit messy, but we can then start
- 1:16[music] adjusting and customizing this
- 1:18floor plan to make it look and feel
- 1:21professional.
- 1:22So, we can do this by changing some of
- 1:25the fills of these [music] furniture
- 1:27elements, for example. So, if you select
- 1:29the element, double click in, we can
- 1:31then change the style to
- 1:33>> [music]
- 1:33>> a white fill, for example. So, a solid
- 1:35white fill. Changing some of these
- 1:37elements such as these people sat
- 1:39outside of the table. Double clicking
- 1:40again, [music]
- 1:41change the fill to a solid white. And as
- 1:44long as the the kind of floor finish is
- 1:46in the background, and the furniture or
- 1:49people are on top, then you should have
- 1:51a solid white fill over the top. Fast
- 1:53forward a bit of time to get something
- 1:55[music] like this.
- 1:56Now, what I want to focus on to build
- 1:58this millwork storage wall is there's
- 2:01this element here in this floor plan
- 2:02that I want to
- 2:03>> [music]
- 2:03>> kind of create as a kind of storage
- 2:04unit, a storage cabinet, that we can
- 2:06then work into. And there's also some
- 2:08other elements that we could potentially
- 2:10build
- 2:11>> [music]
- 2:11>> um some millwork drawings from. So,
- 2:13instead of thinking about each millwork
- 2:15drawing as a one-off task, we can start
- 2:17building a template system. So, I'm
- 2:18going to create a model canvas, and I'll
- 2:20show you all of these examples of
- 2:23cabinetry typologies that I have located
- 2:25here.
- 2:26The different examples that I want to
- 2:27talk through are base cabinets, wall
- 2:29cabinets, [music]
- 2:30shelving systems, joinery details. And
- 2:32you can see here in Rayon we have a full
- 2:35suite of those. And so, the idea, of
- 2:37course, is instead of [music] redrawing
- 2:39many elements, we have them here located
- 2:41as a repository that we can then use and
- 2:44copy across different [music] projects.
- 2:46And so, here you can see that I've got a
- 2:48fairly kind of basic suite of joinery
- 2:51details, cabinets, shelving, etc. You
- 2:53can see here that they're all kind of
- 2:54>> [music]
- 2:55>> black and white, they're all quite
- 2:56simple and basic. We have lots of
- 2:58different types of options here that we
- 3:00can work into. And the idea is that
- 3:02we're now going to start [music]
- 3:03basically building a style into these,
- 3:05making them a little bit more graphic,
- 3:07and [music] making them a little bit
- 3:08cleaner, so they're ready for a
- 3:10presentation format. Now, what we can
- 3:12use the style panel, this is really
- 3:14easy. If you want to select any element,
- 3:15you can head to the right-hand side
- 3:17[music] here, where you can then change
- 3:19the fill, stroke, or thickness of this
- 3:22element, for example. In this case, you
- 3:23can change it to any color. You can
- 3:25change it to a gray, for example. And
- 3:28then we can select multiple elements.
- 3:31Now, once you're happy with the color
- 3:32and the style of that element, you can
- 3:34then save that as a style. So, [music]
- 3:36if you click the plus button on the
- 3:37right-hand side, you can save that as a
- 3:39style. And then you can select multiple
- 3:41elements across your drawing, and then
- 3:44pick that style using [music] this pick
- 3:45style item. Then you'll see that that
- 3:48style is now going to be applied
- 3:50across the drawing. Now, the beauty of
- 3:52this is that now if you select that
- 3:53element you want to change that style to
- 3:55red, for example, or a different tone of
- 3:57gray, it will apply it to across all of
- 4:00those elements that have that style
- 4:02assigned to them.
- 4:03Now, with some of these horizontal
- 4:05elements, we can then maybe apply a kind
- 4:07of
- 4:08uh a brownie, creamy uh color to it. We
- 4:11can then save that also as a style.
- 4:13Select certain of elements that [music]
- 4:15we also want to apply that tone to. We
- 4:18can then pick style. Then all of a
- 4:19sudden now we're getting that kind of
- 4:21timber [music] effect and finish to the
- 4:23drawing. We can do the same with the
- 4:24floor. If we wanted to add a kind of
- 4:26timber floor finish, we can select that
- 4:28element and we can apply a [music]
- 4:29texture. So, we're going to apply a
- 4:32timber texture to that element.
- 4:35Now, we can do that across the
- 4:37elevation, section, floor plan. And now,
- 4:39[music]
- 4:40all of a sudden, when you zoom out
- 4:42across all of our drawing, we have lots
- 4:44of different styles. So, we've worked
- 4:45into here, we've added lots of different
- 4:47textures. [music]
- 4:48We've added lots of different styles.
- 4:49You can even add or upload an image of a
- 4:53kind of finish [music] that you're after
- 4:54to apply to a drawing. And you can have
- 4:56that now uh populated across your
- 4:58drawing as a style.
- 5:00And you can see here now that by of
- 5:02course adding some kind of textures,
- 5:05hatches, styles, colors, uh you have a
- 5:07much more kind of realistic [music] idea
- 5:10and perception of these elements. And
- 5:13so, now we're kind of building up this
- 5:14repository to get it to a point with the
- 5:16level of detail and [music] material
- 5:18finish, so that we can then use it on a
- 5:20regular basis. And the idea is that over
- 5:22time this becomes a library of
- 5:24solutions.
- 5:24>> [music]
- 5:24>> And the more projects you complete, the
- 5:26more valuable this repository becomes.
- 5:28Your work compounds instead of resetting
- 5:30[music] to zero.
- 5:33And another thing that speeds up
- 5:35millwork drawings is [music] having
- 5:36reliable components and blocks or
- 5:38families. Rayon includes a block library
- 5:41of over 10,000 blocks, including
- 5:43furniture, fixtures, architectural
- 5:45[music] elements, people, plants.
- 5:47Whatever you could possibly wish for is
- 5:48in here. And I can place blocks directly
- 5:50into the drawing [music]
- 5:51to test layouts and proportions.
- 5:53Parametric blocks are particularly
- 5:54useful for elements like cabinets or
- 5:56shelving, because you can quickly adjust
- 5:58their size. And if you need something
- 5:59specific, you can also [music] generate
- 6:01custom blocks using AI. But the key here
- 6:04is consistency. Once a block or detail
- 6:07works well, it becomes part of your
- 6:08personal design system. And you can find
- 6:11all of these blocks in the block library
- 6:13on the left-hand side here. You'll be
- 6:14able to search for either blocks in
- 6:17libraries or and or as individual
- 6:19blocks. So, if we go to libraries, you
- 6:20can see here that we've got
- 6:22pretty much anything you could wish for.
- 6:23[music] There's different types of
- 6:24tables, living rooms configurations,
- 6:26bedrooms, etc. And then if you want to
- 6:28search for a particular block, in this
- 6:31case, let's maybe make turn this [music]
- 6:33into a kind of bookshelf. We type in
- 6:35books as a single block. We can then
- 6:37change to maybe front, side, or top
- 6:40view. In this case, [music] we want a
- 6:41front view because this is a front
- 6:43elevation. We can then choose maybe a
- 6:46set of books that we want to then
- 6:47[music] pull into our models. You just
- 6:49drag and drop into place.
- 6:52Close that down. And then we'll [music]
- 6:54just position these in. You can then
- 6:55copy and paste this along. Now, the
- 6:57beauty of these blocks is that they
- 6:58don't just come as a front view. They
- 7:00come as a top, side, and front view. And
- 7:02so, in this case, you've got this block
- 7:04which you can select on the right-hand
- 7:06side as the block instance, [music]
- 7:07and you can jump between side view,
- 7:10front view, top-down view, so that when
- 7:12you're working between floor plans,
- 7:14section elevations, as [music] we've
- 7:16discussed here, your blocks will then
- 7:18match and correspond with each view,
- 7:20which is really important to make sure
- 7:21your [music] drawings are consistent.
- 7:23And so, here we're just going to
- 7:23position our block into place. I'm going
- 7:25to start copying it down and populating
- 7:27the shelving unit. So, we can also have
- 7:29lots of different types of [music]
- 7:30books, for example, to add some variety.
- 7:33And we can populate this elevation to
- 7:35make it look something [music] like
- 7:36this, where the the drawing is now all
- 7:38of a sudden start to show its intended
- 7:40use. We can also potentially look for a
- 7:42vinyl player. If we wanted to put a
- 7:44vinyl player in here,
- 7:46um if you wanted to pull in then a
- 7:47chair, so we can then find a chair that
- 7:49we wanted to drop into place, [music]
- 7:51so it sits in front of the desk. You can
- 7:53then copy some of those elements across.
- 7:55So, take [music] this chair over. We can
- 7:57then change the view or flip it over,
- 7:59and then drop it into your plan view,
- 8:01your side view, and your front view.
- 8:03So, then now you can [music] then copy
- 8:05some of these elements like a plant, for
- 8:07example, copy it over into your
- 8:08alternative views, [music]
- 8:10position them into place. Then all of a
- 8:11sudden, when we zoom out, we've got a
- 8:13fully populated elevation, section, and
- 8:16floor plan. Where we've got lots of
- 8:18different elements here that we've
- 8:19populated these shelving units. [music]
- 8:21All of a sudden it is coming to life. It
- 8:23has that level of detail and that
- 8:24quality to show that intended use of
- 8:27these units.
- 8:28And you can see that throughout all of
- 8:29these drawings. And a really great
- 8:31finishing touch is also adding people.
- 8:32So, you can see here that you can search
- 8:34for
- 8:34>> [music]
- 8:34>> hundreds of people. You've got different
- 8:36shoes, you've got different elements
- 8:38here that all help to describe [music]
- 8:40the use of these kind of furniture
- 8:43shelving units. And it also adds a
- 8:45really great level of detail and quality
- 8:47to [music] them. And now, once we have a
- 8:49set of details and drawings that we want
- 8:51to use, what can be really helpful is to
- 8:54visualize them quickly in three
- 8:55dimensions. So, instead of building a 3D
- 8:58model, Rayon's AI tools can generate
- 9:00axonometric views directly from the
- 9:02drawing. This [music] is useful for
- 9:03testing material combinations. You can
- 9:05do that by let's select this element
- 9:07[music] here, for example, that we want
- 9:08to create a 3D view from. Head to the
- 9:11left-hand side here, and we can generate
- 9:13something from the Rayon AI panel. So,
- 9:16you have two options. You can either
- 9:18>> [music]
- 9:18>> choose to add a file or add a
- 9:20screenshot. If we add a screenshot from
- 9:22this image, [music] we can then do, for
- 9:24example, generate axonometry.
- 9:27We can send that off, [music] and then
- 9:28all of a sudden it will create something
- 9:29like this,
- 9:30which is really quite compelling and
- 9:31useful to show that kind of alternative
- 9:33[music] view.
- 9:34Likewise, if you wanted to maybe create
- 9:36a rendered view of this front shot of
- 9:39this bedroom, for example, we could grab
- 9:42another image of that. We can then
- 9:44prompt it to create a rendered image of
- 9:46[music] this bedroom layout. Then all of
- 9:48a sudden it will give us something like
- 9:49this, which is really [music] great. And
- 9:52it's really interesting now that when
- 9:54you you put these side by side, when you
- 9:55insert this into [music] place.
- 9:58How powerful and accurate that is and
- 10:00how realistic this is and how quick that
- 10:02was to create that. And this is really
- 10:04helpful for
- 10:05helping you to not only build this
- 10:07repository, but when you do have a set
- 10:09of drawings that you then want to
- 10:10present to a client and they're
- 10:11struggling to understand it or to
- 10:13visualize it,
- 10:15Rhino has this AI [music]
- 10:16tool that allows you to really quickly
- 10:18generate some ideas and to visually show
- 10:20these ideas.
- 10:22In the same way you could do this here
- 10:23with this kind of slightly more zoomed
- 10:24in
- 10:25uh elevation of the plant alongside
- 10:29the bed and as [music] you can see here
- 10:30it's created something that's really
- 10:32quite powerful and compelling again.
- 10:34Which we can then insert image into our
- 10:37presentation. And then another great
- 10:39tool that you can use using this panel
- 10:40is then stylizing this image. So at the
- 10:42moment it's obviously a hyperrealistic
- 10:43[music]
- 10:44render. We can then maybe style it into
- 10:46a sketch or a watercolor [music] or a
- 10:49clay model. In this case it will create
- 10:50something like this as a sketch, which
- 10:52is also quite [music] a useful and
- 10:55interesting drawing to have. So you can
- 10:57apply a sketch style for [music] example
- 10:59to study the form or test materials by
- 11:01uploading references directly to prompt
- 11:03it. It's a fast way to explore design
- 11:05ideas without slowing down the workflow.
- 11:09Now that the millwork system is defined,
- 11:11we can assemble everything into a
- 11:12presentation. We can also add key
- 11:15elements such as annotations. And the
- 11:16way that Rhino works is that there are
- 11:18paper canvases and there's model
- 11:19canvases. Model canvas is currently
- 11:21where we have these drawings, but you
- 11:22can build a presentation in a paper
- 11:24canvas. So before we jump into the paper
- 11:26canvas, we're going to first add some
- 11:28dimensions, [music] some tags, some
- 11:30really key information and details to
- 11:32these drawings. So you can head to the
- 11:33bottom here and you can see all the
- 11:34annotation options. [music]
- 11:35We're going to choose a dimension tag so
- 11:38you can then change and [music] adjust
- 11:39the size of the dimension tag. You can
- 11:41then change the font, stroke,
- 11:44>> [music]
- 11:44>> the the end piece etc. to customize as
- 11:47you please. You can also do kind of
- 11:48light [music] gray for example to make
- 11:50it much softer. You can then also add
- 11:52maybe a leader note
- 11:53>> [music]
- 11:54>> uh for the coat hangers for example to
- 11:56just add that required detail and
- 11:57reference. You can once again customize
- 12:00them. And then with a bit of work you
- 12:01can then add all of this detail in
- 12:04indicating all of these elements and all
- 12:06of the details to really
- 12:08make sure there's enough information and
- 12:10detail there for someone to understand
- 12:11how this is built, how it's used, and
- 12:13how it all comes [music] together. And
- 12:15so here we you can see across all of the
- 12:17drawings now we have
- 12:18plenty of details. Some of it's more
- 12:20customized with kind of red text for
- 12:22example. [music]
- 12:23But what you can clearly see here is
- 12:24that now this additional annotation adds
- 12:27that level of detail that's required to
- 12:29the drawing. [music]
- 12:30And now if you want to jump into a paper
- 12:31canvas then and start building a
- 12:32presentation,
- 12:33>> [music]
- 12:34>> you have two options here where you can
- 12:35click the plus button, model canvas or
- 12:36paper canvas.
- 12:38We're going to create a paper canvas and
- 12:39[music] call it presentation.
- 12:40Now the first thing we're going to do is
- 12:41create a page. Now you can customize
- 12:43these by changing the format to an A3,
- 12:45A0, whatever size you'd like, whatever
- 12:47orientation. You can also customize it
- 12:49as you drag um and kind [music] of scale
- 12:51it up and down.
- 12:53We then want to create a view into our
- 12:56model canvas. And we can then position
- 12:58our view into place. We can then adjust
- 13:00the scale [music]
- 13:01and then start building a bit of a
- 13:03presentation. So we can add another
- 13:04page. We can add multiple pages. A
- 13:06really useful [music] thing to add then
- 13:08is title blocks. So title blocks are
- 13:10available in the block library alongside
- 13:12many other annotations [music] like
- 13:14section marks like north arrows like
- 13:15scale bars that you can all pull into
- 13:17your drawings.
- 13:19So in this case we're just going to pull
- 13:20in a title block which we can drop into
- 13:22place.
- 13:24And these are really useful [music]
- 13:25because they have plenty of information
- 13:26in them which you can adjust and edit to
- 13:29your own personal drawing. And a
- 13:30particular [music] title block that I
- 13:31quite enjoy for these kind of repository
- 13:34presentations is really kind of simple
- 13:36and minimal title block here that I've
- 13:37just positioned into place. [music] And
- 13:39something that you also have access to
- 13:41here is also some design details. So we
- 13:43also have some details of how uh these
- 13:45kind of connections come [music]
- 13:46together, how this these elements might
- 13:48kind of be constructed with the lighting
- 13:49elements. I also have a kind of board
- 13:51[music] of inspiration with lots of
- 13:53different options and elements of kind
- 13:55of material palettes uh
- 13:57>> [music]
- 13:57>> and different kind of visual
- 13:58inspirations that we could use and
- 14:00reference in a presentation. And then
- 14:02with a bit of work and by creating
- 14:04viewports into these model canvases,
- 14:06>> [music]
- 14:06>> you can see here now that all of a
- 14:07sudden we've kind of built a bit of a
- 14:09presentation which identifies different
- 14:11details [music] with different kind of
- 14:13references that we can use, some visual
- 14:15references,
- 14:16some lighting system references,
- 14:18uh we've then got a kind of mood board
- 14:20where we're overlapping some material
- 14:21references that we have with some tags.
- 14:23[music] And then also some kind of
- 14:25visual inspiration with the kind of AI
- 14:28generated images. And so all of a sudden
- 14:30here we've built up a full presentation
- 14:33>> [music]
- 14:33>> from all of these millwork details that
- 14:34we've created. Now you can share this
- 14:36presentation
- 14:37>> [music]
- 14:37>> by heading to the top right corner here,
- 14:39click share, click publish presentation,
- 14:42open it and then all of a sudden you can
- 14:44send this as a link to someone who would
- 14:46then have access to this presentation
- 14:48that could flick through here. And it
- 14:50comes [music] across as a really kind of
- 14:51well-curated and strong presentation.
- 14:54Alternatively, of course you can export
- 14:56as a PDF [music] as a full presentation.
- 14:58At the top left corner here, click
- 15:00export and you can see here now that you
- 15:01can flick through
- 15:03uh the presentation. And now we have a
- 15:04full millwork template that is useful
- 15:07and that [music] we can reuse and rework
- 15:09across projects. And this is also
