Full transcript
- 0:00hello everybody Elizabeth Peterson here
- 0:02from The Inspired classroom and seal
- 0:04social emotional artistic learning and
- 0:07today we are going to talk about
- 0:09Maslow's hierarchy of needs and how this
- 0:13applies to teachers as we're working
- 0:16with our students you may have actually
- 0:18heard the saying that you have to Maslow
- 0:21before you can bloom and that's exactly
- 0:25what I want to work through with you
- 0:28inside of this video so here's the
- 0:30pyramid that shows these needs and let's
- 0:34for a moment think about ourselves with
- 0:37this idea because Maslow's hierarchy of
- 0:40needs certainly isn't just about kids
- 0:42it's about adults too for example if an
- 0:46adult is having money troubles maybe
- 0:49they can't pay for their mortgage for a
- 0:51couple of months or they're dealing with
- 0:53a big and unexpected medical bill it may
- 0:57actually cause that person not to work
- 0:59well in their job in this case their
- 1:03feeling of Safety and Security is not
- 1:07being met and it can affect their
- 1:10self-esteem maybe they don't really have
- 1:12that feeling of self-worth anymore maybe
- 1:16they don't feel accomplished because
- 1:18they can't keep up with what they feel
- 1:21are the basic needs of being an adult
- 1:23and this all stems from them not being
- 1:26able to have that security in their life
- 1:31that has to do with them being able to
- 1:33provide for themselves and their family
- 1:35let's look at another example so let's
- 1:38say that a friend of yours is depriving
- 1:40themselves of certain foods maybe
- 1:43they're on a low carb or no carb diet
- 1:46and it's making them irritable and not
- 1:51so fun to be around
- 1:52so in this case their physiological
- 1:56needs are not being fully met and it's
- 1:59affecting their ability to socialize
- 2:02well with others so do you see how this
- 2:05can start to work in our own lives as
- 2:07adults well the same is true for our
- 2:10students as well the way the hierarchy
- 2:13works is that you need to build a good
- 2:16foundation and pacify the needs at the
- 2:19bottom of this pyramid in order to start
- 2:22working your way up you can't really
- 2:25skip steps and let's face it school is
- 2:29kind of more focused on the esteem part
- 2:32of the pyramid right now there's no
- 2:34problem with that we are teachers and
- 2:37teaching knowledge is what we do the
- 2:40only thing is that if students are
- 2:42coming to us without having those other
- 2:45needs met their learning is not going to
- 2:48be nearly as good as it could be for
- 2:51example I'll never forget this one time
- 2:53last year one of my students it was
- 2:56about 8 50 in the morning we had just
- 2:59switched for math groups and she was not
- 3:02being her normal self she wasn't getting
- 3:04right into the math warm-up that we
- 3:06usually started with she was kind of
- 3:08slumped over and I thought oh goodness
- 3:10something bad must have happened at home
- 3:12so I went over and I asked her what was
- 3:14going on and I asked if she was okay and
- 3:17she just kind of wasn't responding so
- 3:20much and then I happened to ask her did
- 3:22you have breakfast this morning or did
- 3:24you leave in a rush and she said yeah I
- 3:27left in a rush it didn't have anything
- 3:28to eat and I'm hungry and I thought
- 3:31let's get you some food so I said do you
- 3:34want to go to the cafeteria and see what
- 3:36food is available and she said sure she
- 3:38went she grabbed food she brought it
- 3:40back she ate it while she was doing her
- 3:43warm-up and then by the time we're ready
- 3:45to start as a whole class she was all in
- 3:48just having that little snack was so
- 3:52helpful for her all right so let's take
- 3:54a look at each of these steps in this
- 3:57pyramid and talk about what we can do
- 4:00and look out for as teachers so right at
- 4:04the bottom of the pyramid foundational
- 4:06is the physiological needs of our
- 4:10students and ourselves we often will
- 4:13assume that students are coming to us
- 4:15with those types of needs met but in
- 4:18reality we know that that's not always
- 4:20the truth so be thinking about what kind
- 4:25of things you might allow for in your
- 4:27classroom will you allow a student to
- 4:30eat snack if you think they really need
- 4:31it do you have snack time during the day
- 4:34what's your bathroom policy do you allow
- 4:36students to go to the bathroom if they
- 4:38need it this level in the hierarchy of
- 4:40needs is not just about food water and
- 4:43shelter but also Comfort basic Comfort I
- 4:47love that this illustration says warmth
- 4:50I'll tell you there are some days when
- 4:52my my classroom is pretty chilly and I
- 4:55will actually allow my students to wear
- 4:58their jackets for a little extra time if
- 5:00they want as long as they're doing their
- 5:02work because I know if they feel
- 5:04comfortable if they feel like they're
- 5:08you know biological their physiological
- 5:10needs are met then they're going to be
- 5:12better able to stay in the classroom and
- 5:14do their work okay let's move to the
- 5:16next level up and that is security this
- 5:20is where you're making sure that your
- 5:22classroom is the safe learning
- 5:24environment that I know you want for
- 5:26your students so do your students feel
- 5:30safe in the classroom and there are some
- 5:32things that you might want to think
- 5:33about as you're considering this in this
- 5:37framework here this could include
- 5:38something as simple as your seating
- 5:41arrangement maybe a student needs to be
- 5:43far or near from certain people in the
- 5:47room or even you as the teacher maybe
- 5:50they need to be near the doorway or are
- 5:53away from the doorway maybe they just
- 5:55need a little extra space because they
- 5:57don't feel comfortable being in the
- 5:59middle of the room and feeling like
- 6:00they're surrounded by others this is
- 6:02also where you might consider do you
- 6:05have the tools and things that your
- 6:07students need so that they don't feel
- 6:10out of place but they feel like they are
- 6:12comfortable and safe inside your
- 6:14classroom this is also where some
- 6:17strategically chosen fidgets can also be
- 6:20utilized like something really quiet
- 6:22that they can squeeze kind of out of
- 6:24sight but it you know that it's helping
- 6:26them now social needs are such an
- 6:30important part of all classrooms and I
- 6:33know that this is one of the things that
- 6:35teachers love to take the time to
- 6:38cultivate in their classroom building
- 6:40relationships between teacher and
- 6:43student and also peer-to-peer seems to
- 6:45be the single most important thing the
- 6:48most important aspect of social
- 6:50emotional well-being that students need
- 6:53inside the classroom and whether it's
- 6:55the beginning of the school year or the
- 6:57middle or even near the end having some
- 7:00good ways to continue to build
- 7:02relationships and get students to you
- 7:05know work together really well and have
- 7:07that sense of belonging is just so
- 7:09important and if you're looking for some
- 7:11quick and effective ways to build
- 7:14relationships in your classroom be sure
- 7:16to check out my quick connections free
- 7:19resource from seal I'll leave the link
- 7:21to get your free copy down below this
- 7:24video finally we start getting up there
- 7:26on the hierarchy of needs let's take a
- 7:29look at a steam now this is where most
- 7:32of our school day can live if our
- 7:35students other needs are being met in
- 7:38this place in this level of the
- 7:40hierarchy of needs students can work
- 7:43with others they'll learn they'll take
- 7:45risks they'll make mistakes they'll gain
- 7:48a sense of accomplishment in the work
- 7:50that they're doing this is where
- 7:52confidence is built and you can build
- 7:55upon the learning that your students are
- 7:58doing in your classroom now this level
- 8:01of the hierarchy is I believe where
- 8:05Bloom starts to happen in this esteem
- 8:08layer and then up to the
- 8:10self-actualization as well so you've
- 8:13probably heard of Bloom's taxonomy right
- 8:15I remember learning about it years and
- 8:18years ago when I was in college and even
- 8:20earlier than that Bloom's taxonomy is
- 8:23where I find myself combing through all
- 8:26the really juicy verbs to use when
- 8:29creating lessons and making sure that
- 8:32I'm really allowing for both lower and
- 8:34higher order thinking depending on the
- 8:37lesson that I'm creating for my students
- 8:38here's the thing we can pound through
- 8:41our days spouting off lesson after
- 8:44lesson hoping that what we're putting
- 8:46out there is being received by our
- 8:48students but when you know better you do
- 8:51better and I'll tell you that as I
- 8:53learned more about Maslow's hierarchy of
- 8:56needs I knew better I now know things to
- 9:00look for in a student and questions to
- 9:03ask my kids so I can make sure that
- 9:06their basic needs are actually being met
- 9:09to the best of our ability so that they
- 9:11can learn and notice I said our ability
- 9:15so here's the last thing I want to leave
- 9:17you with I want you to remember that you
- 9:20are not alone in this job reach out to
- 9:25others at your school who can assist you
- 9:27when you notice that a student's needs
- 9:29aren't being met maybe it's the nurse
- 9:32the counselor the administration a
- 9:35colleague or even sometimes another one
- 9:38of your students can be the right person
- 9:40to help out another student no matter
- 9:43what just understanding the basics of
- 9:45Maslow's hierarchy of needs can really
- 9:48change how you look at your students as
- 9:52a whole and individually so hopefully
- 9:54you'll be able to take this knowledge
- 9:56back to your classroom as well let me
- 9:58know what you think and I can't wait to
- 10:00see you in the next video
