  1. 0:00And I think of a young woman who has
  2. 0:01become a mother has a child and has
  3. 0:04never touched that child with with her
  4. 0:06fingers or thumb or caressed it with her
  5. 0:09hands. Instead, it's a prosthetic
  6. 0:11device. That's what I think about when I
  7. 0:13think about Mary Vincent.
  8. 0:14District Attorney Don Stahl still cannot
  9. 0:17fathom the tragedy of Mary Vincent. It
  10. 0:20was the summer of 1978. Mary Vincent was
  11. 0:23a fiercely independent but naive
  12. 0:2515-year-old.
  13. 0:26day, I wanted to go home. That's the
  14. 0:28only thing that was in my mind is that I
  15. 0:30wanted to go home.
  16. 0:31That day?
  17. 0:33Everything.
  18. 0:35I remember everything, every detail.
  19. 0:41Excuse me, I need some water.
  20. 0:42Okay, I'll get you some water.
  21. 0:44Today, the crime is difficult to
  22. 0:46discuss. That is why Mary has never
  23. 0:49spoken to anyone about the details
  24. 0:51before, but she decided that she wanted
  25. 0:53us to understand what she's been
  26. 0:55through.
  27. 0:56Mary Vincent did not.
  28. 0:58Mary remembers a Corvette convertible
  29. 1:01coming toward her.
  30. 1:03And I screamed to stop, to help me.
  31. 1:08And
  32. 1:09I was thinking, gosh, I I must look a
  33. 1:11mess.
  34. 1:13They're going to get scared, and they
  35. 1:14did get scared, and they drove off.
  36. 1:20I told myself, maybe if I'm nicer and I
  37. 1:23ask please to help, maybe the next
  38. 1:25people will help me.
  39. 1:26It was a miracle Mary survived, but she
  40. 1:29would never recover from the gruesome
  41. 1:31attack that robbed her of the chance to
  42. 1:33ever again run her fingers through her
  43. 1:35hair, caress a child's face, or hold a
  44. 1:39lover's hand. All of this brings Mary
  45. 1:42great pain.
  46. 1:43You told me you thought about suicide.
  47. 1:45Yes, I have.
  48. 1:48He took away my life.
  49. 1:50I mean, this isn't living. This is
  50. 1:51existing.
  51. 1:54Did he say Say to you while the crime
  52. 1:56was occurring?
  53. 1:58Remember it all?
  54. 2:00Well, while he was attacking me, he was
  55. 2:05telling me that
  56. 2:08I'm going to be his good little girl.
  57. 2:10He was talking as though
  58. 2:14I was one of his kids.
  59. 2:17Ironically, Singleton has a daughter
  60. 2:20Mary's age. He
  61. 2:22After her harrowing ordeal, Mary faced
  62. 2:25her attacker in court. She was
  63. 2:27determined to see him punished.
  64. 2:29I can recall her eyes just
  65. 2:31almost growing.
  66. 2:33And then she pointed to him and she did
  67. 2:36it with the prosthetic devices.
  68. 2:39And she did it so directly. I think
  69. 2:41everybody's heart stopped.
  70. 2:43What was it like to see his face again?
  71. 2:46I saw that.
  72. 2:48Just pure hate, pure evil.
  73. 2:50This makes Mary Vincent very uneasy.
  74. 2:54How many times have you moved in the
  75. 2:55last 15 years?
  76. 2:58Too many to remember.
  77. 3:00Cuz every time I move,
  78. 3:03there's always something I have to leave
  79. 3:05behind.
  80. 3:07In 1988, Mary Vincent got married. Today
  81. 3:10at 31, she is divorced, the mother of
  82. 3:12two children whose faces she asked us
  83. 3:15not to show. She's been on and off
  84. 3:17welfare for years.
  85. 3:20I have to work 10 times harder than the
  86. 3:21average person with hands to do
  87. 3:23anything, to fold clothes, do dishes.
  88. 3:26Mary's injuries still require constant
  89. 3:29attention. Her prosthetic arm should be
  90. 3:31replaced every year, but the staggering
  91. 3:33cost has made that impossible. Afraid
  92. 3:36she'll be tracked down by Singleton,
  93. 3:38Mary is always looking over her
  94. 3:40shoulder. She relies on a friend, Bob
  95. 3:43Clayton, for protection. He volunteers
  96. 3:45his time as her bodyguard.
  97. 3:48What kind of a person is Mary Vincent?
  98. 3:50She's an angel.
  99. 3:52Do you have a dream for the future?
  100. 3:55I had a dream once.
  101. 3:59I've had a lot taken from me and I think
  102. 4:02I
  103. 4:06I think I deserve just a chance to see
  104. 4:09if I can
  105. 4:11make a go of it.
  106. 4:15What comforts you?
  107. 4:18My children.
  108. 4:20My children comfort me.
  109. 4:22They see the stress looks on their mom's
  110. 4:24faces and they come up give me a hug.
  111. 4:29Mary Vincent has already survived such
  112. 4:32sorrow and shown such grace. You have to
  113. 4:35admire her strength and you hope that
  114. 4:37one day she will find the peace she
  115. 4:39deserves.
