- 0:12the international olympic committee
- 0:15is the honor of announcing
- 0:17that the games of the 30th olympiad in
- 0:202012
- 0:21are awarded
- 0:23to the city of london
- 0:28we've all been celebrating in the
- 0:29afternoon that london had won the
- 0:31olympic bid and we just thought it was a
- 0:33good excuse to go out and have a few
- 0:35drinks really to celebrate
- 0:41following morning my alarm went off
- 0:45and i'm usually very good in the morning
- 0:46i'm quite a morning person
- 0:49that morning
- 0:50i decided to have 10 minutes more in bed
- 0:54those 10 minutes would come at a price
- 0:57july the 7th 2005 martine wright was
- 1:01just another passenger on the london
- 1:02underground
- 1:04until she sat next to a suicide bomber i
- 1:06just had a white flash in front of my
- 1:09eyes
- 1:10and i felt like i was being thrown
- 1:13from
- 1:14side to side and i remember consciously
- 1:17thinking
- 1:19what
- 1:20the hell is going on
- 1:22today the chilling sounds
- 1:32suddenly
- 1:34it was
- 1:35just black
- 1:37devastation you know it just blackness
- 1:45i don't remember the pain i just do not
- 1:47remember any pain
- 1:51all i could see was sort of metal
- 1:54going down
- 1:55into me i didn't realize that my legs
- 1:57were
- 1:58caught up in it and there was just an
- 2:00electrical sort of burning smell and it
- 2:03was getting a little quieter and quieter
- 2:05as well and and i can only really equate
- 2:07that to in in the beginning if people
- 2:09were
- 2:10dying and things
- 2:14i could see this figure coming down
- 2:18towards the door that been blown off um
- 2:21and this was liz liz kemworthy the
- 2:23off-duty policewoman
- 2:28and basically this was the
- 2:30lady that
- 2:31saved my life
- 2:40she
- 2:42that's right it's all right just i just
- 2:45think i'm so lucky
- 2:46just
- 2:47so lucky
- 2:48but um
- 2:50she
- 2:52she came through
- 2:54and i can't imagine
- 2:56again what she was faced with but
- 2:58because
- 2:59you know i was there and she and she saw
- 3:01the state of my
- 3:03legs and
- 3:05i remember seeing her and i just kept
- 3:07saying to her
- 3:08my name's martine wright please tell my
- 3:11mum and dad i'm okay my name's martine
- 3:13wright on 7 7 2005 martin wright began a
- 3:17quite extraordinary journey her very
- 3:19personal story is inseparable from
- 3:21london's public preparations for the
- 3:23games
- 3:24by 2007 as london's often embattled
- 3:27organisers were bruised by budget issues
- 3:29and battered by a hostile response to
- 3:31the game's logo martine began to reveal
- 3:34her irrepressible spirit learning to ski
- 3:37and fly
- 3:38then in may 2008 as boris johnson became
- 3:41mayor of london the beijing games
- 3:43provided martine a map for her own
- 3:45journey i knew that i had to do
- 3:46something as a result of losing my legs
- 3:48that day otherwise to me it would have
- 3:50been all a complete waste of time so i
- 3:53was actually looking
- 3:56at
- 3:57the paralympics in a very new light in a
- 3:59in a light of a disabled person and
- 4:02looking at it and thinking my god
- 4:04wouldn't it be amazing to do
- 4:06something like that so i started playing
- 4:10for a sitting volleyball club
- 4:12what i did enjoy about it is
- 4:15that you're not in your chair you know
- 4:17you you move on on the floor it's a very
- 4:19dynamic game very fast game
- 4:23i came into politics
- 4:24in 2010 britain elected its youngest
- 4:27prime minister in nearly 200 years
- 4:30with little experience herself martine
- 4:33tried out for the first gb sitting
- 4:34volleyball team
- 4:36she was selected to play in the world
- 4:38championships
- 4:39in a chilling coincidence they traveled
- 4:42to the tournament in the usa on july the
- 4:447th
- 4:46that's when
- 4:47i sort of realized
- 4:49oh my god i could be
- 4:53on such a special journey on you know i
- 4:56could actually end up
- 4:58at the paralympics
- 5:01as the mood turned raw during the riots
- 5:03of 2011
- 5:04it was a tense time for martine and her
- 5:06teammates who still had to persuade the
- 5:09british paralympic association they were
- 5:11good enough to appear at the games
- 5:13the news they dreamed of finally came in
- 5:15march 2012.
- 5:18i just
- 5:19think back and i actually can't believe
- 5:22the journey that
- 5:24has happened and is happening now that
- 5:26i'm on um
- 5:29you know
- 5:29maybe i was always meant to get up late
- 5:31that morning maybe i was always meant to
- 5:34run up the escalator and jump on that
- 5:36carriage that i got on you know maybe i
- 5:39was always meant to do this journey i
- 5:40don't know i can't
- 5:42i can't answer that all i can say is
- 5:44that
- 5:46i'm just lucky to be living this dream
- 5:48now
- 5:55you
