Marma — Transcript

- 0:01It can sound somewhat extraordinary for
- 0:04a teacher to tell the students applying
- 0:07pressure to a certain area of the ankle
- 0:10in some situations can help bladder
- 0:14functioning and calm the mood. And that
- 0:17is what marmotherapy,
- 0:19ancient pressure point therapy of
- 0:21Ayurveda makes claims of. And this
- 0:24murmur therapy has a lot of um overlap
- 0:28and similarities to traditional Chinese
- 0:31medicine's acupressure and acupoint uh
- 0:34therapy.
- 0:35Are there any convergences with what
- 0:39this tradition is saying and modern
- 0:41science?
- 0:43Here we have an FDA cleared tibial nerve
- 0:46stimulation device used for overactive
- 0:49bladder and there's preliminary evidence
- 0:52of increased parasympathetic activity
- 0:55the rest and digest nervous system which
- 0:57is very similar to what the gula marma
- 1:00and ayurveda claims uh and this is
- 1:03according to Dr. Vasant Lads, Merma
- 1:05points of Ayurveda.
- 1:07Merma points are vital points, vital
- 1:10energy points where the physical tissue
- 1:12interfaces with the life energy, the
- 1:14prana. And in um the sasha sumita, it's
- 1:19estimated there's 107 marker points. And
- 1:23this slide is more philosophical than
- 1:25scientific, but we do see some
- 1:27interfaces and limits of our physical
- 1:31world. Here we have the neuromuscular
- 1:33junction, a translation of electrical,
- 1:36chemical and mechanical energy. And in
- 1:40physics they describe that the matter
- 1:43and energy are two forms of the same
- 1:45reality. And black holes uh are
- 1:50described as um extreme gravitational
- 1:55uh where gravity pushes our current
- 1:58physical theories towards the limits.
- 2:00there's some kind of transitional zone.
- 2:01I'm not a physicist, but it's kind of
- 2:04curious. So mara points in the ancient
- 2:07ayurvedic um or ancient India were to be
- 2:10protected because if certain areas let's
- 2:13say the chest were hit and even if
- 2:15there's no physical damage that that
- 2:18could be even life-threatening and in
- 2:20surgery in Ayurveda there are certain
- 2:22points that were definitely to be
- 2:24protected and in modern medicine we see
- 2:27a parallel you know if somebody is hit
- 2:30in the chest area uh even if didn't have
- 2:34any pathologic uh findings that could be
- 2:37life-threatening in certain cases.
- 2:41Maurma is described as um used to reduce
- 2:46heart racing and calmness and support
- 2:48sleep for certain situations. And of
- 2:51course, this is a very you you have to
- 2:53be very cautious and I wouldn't
- 2:55recommend um this type of stimulation uh
- 2:59without any without medical supervision.
- 3:02Um but we see the karate sinus massage
- 3:05does similar things. It increases the
- 3:08rest and digest nervous system, slows
- 3:10the heart rate in certain um scenarios.
- 3:14And that claim about helping the nervous
- 3:17system and calm. Well, this is an
- 3:19implanted cervical vagus nerve
- 3:21stimulator device FDA approved for uh
- 3:25certain types of drugresistant epilepsy
- 3:28and uh treatment resistant depression.
- 3:32Some ayurvedic merma points of the ear c
- 3:35are claim claim also to have stress
- 3:37reduction improve hyperactive mind and
- 3:40help with certain types of headaches.
- 3:44And we see that this is being researched
- 3:47this transcutaneous erecular vagus nerve
- 3:50stimulating device for migraines,
- 3:53anxiety, depression, epilepsy.
- 3:57So it's curious like why why would there
- 4:01be this kind of phenomenon and just like
- 4:04origami where you can take a single
- 4:06sheet of paper and fold it and fold it
- 4:08and get a a nice kind of symmetrical
- 4:11design when we start with uh one
- 4:14fertilized um cell that divides and
- 4:18divides it has the road road map of um
- 4:20all of the you know the DNA and that
- 4:25again that's Again a philosophical kind
- 4:27of analogy but it's
- 4:30a little bit more curious when when we
- 4:33look at through that lens that you know
- 4:35stimulating the certain part of the ear
- 4:38can um help stimulate your pineal gland
- 4:42um people put earrings in that area um
- 4:44or looking at the tongue may reflect
- 4:47certain other areas of the body. So this
- 4:49is very curious
- 4:52and a lot of this is intuitive. Nobody
- 4:54had to read about talidya improving
- 4:58memory and causing relaxation.
- 5:01Has anybody ever done this to relax
- 5:04themselves by stimulating this um area
- 5:07or this child taking an exam scratching
- 5:09the top of her head
- 5:12and in Ayurveda they call this the
- 5:14aipati marma used to improve memory and
- 5:18relaxation for certain situations. So um
- 5:20this is my website. If you're curious
- 5:23and interested to know more about
- 5:25Ayurveda and how it um it relates with
- 5:29conventional medicine, uh you can
- 5:31subscribe to my YouTube channel or my
- 5:34subscribe to my website uh for just fun
- 5:37educational videos. Uh thank you and
- 5:40take care.
