- 0:00Um, you're a dad. Uh, I'd like to talk a
- 0:02little bit about social media addiction.
- 0:04You started uh your comments today by
- 0:07talking about how Facebook is and was
- 0:09founded as an optimistic company. You
- 0:11and I have had conversations separate
- 0:12from here. Um, I don't want to put words
- 0:14in your mouth, but I think as you've
- 0:15aged, you might be a little bit less
- 0:17idealistic and optimistic uh than you
- 0:19were when you when you started Facebook.
- 0:22As a dad, uh do you worry about social
- 0:24media addiction as a problem for
- 0:26America's teens?
- 0:28Well, my hope is is that we can be
- 0:30idealistic, but have a broad view of our
- 0:32responsibility. Uh,
- 0:34to your your point about teens, this is
- 0:36certainly something that I think any
- 0:37parent thinks about is how much do you
- 0:39want your kids using technology?
- 0:42It it At Facebook specifically,
- 0:45uh I view our responsibility as not just
- 0:46building services that people like, but
- 0:49building services that are good for
- 0:50people and good for society as well. So,
- 0:52we study a lot of effects of well-being
- 0:55of our of our tools and broader
- 0:57technology. And, you know, like any
- 0:59tool, um there are good and and bad uses
- 1:01of it. What we find in general is that
- 1:04if you're using social media uh in order
- 1:07to build relationships, right? So,
- 1:08you're you're sharing content with
- 1:09friends, you're interacting, then that
- 1:11is associated with all of the long-term
- 1:14measures of well-being that you'd
- 1:16intuitively think of. Long-term health,
- 1:18long-term happiness, long-term feeling
- 1:19connected, feeling less lonely. But, if
- 1:22you're using the internet and social
- 1:23media um primarily to just passively
- 1:26consume content and you're not engaging
- 1:27with other people, then it doesn't have
- 1:29those positive effects and it could be
- 1:30negative.
- 1:31We're We're almost at time, so I want to
- 1:32I want to ask you one more. Uh, do
- 1:33social media companies hire consulting
- 1:36firms to help them figure out how to get
- 1:38more dopamine feedback loops so that
- 1:40people don't want to leave the platform?
- 1:43No, Senator. That's not how we talk
- 1:45about this or or or how we uh set up our
- 1:48product teams. We want our products to
- 1:50be valuable
- 1:51to people and if they're valuable, then
- 1:53people choose to use them.
- 1:54Are you aware of other social media
- 1:55companies that do hire such consultants?
- 1:58Not sitting here today.
- 2:00Thanks.
