- 0:00Mark 7:1 [music]
- 0:02The Pharisees and some of the scribes
- 0:04gathered around him when they had come
- 0:07from Jerusalem and had seen [music] some
- 0:09of his disciples were eating their bread
- 0:11with impure hands, that is unwashed. For
- 0:15the Pharisees and all the Jews do not
- 0:17eat unless they carefully wash their
- 0:19hands, thus observing the tradition
- 0:22[music] of the elders. And when they
- 0:25come from the marketplace, they do not
- 0:26eat unless they cleanse [music]
- 0:28themselves. And there are many other
- 0:30things which they have received
- 0:33in order to observe, such as the washing
- 0:36of cups [music] and pictures and copper
- 0:39pots. The Pharisees and the scribes
- 0:41asked [music] him, "Why do your
- 0:43disciples not walk according to the
- 0:45tradition of the elders, but eat their
- 0:48bread with impure hands?"
- 0:52And he said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah
- 0:55prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is
- 0:58written, this people honors me with
- 1:01their lips, but their heart is far away
- 1:04from [music] me. But in vain do they
- 1:07worship me. Teaching as doctrine the
- 1:11precepts of men.
- 1:14Neglecting the commandment of God, you
- 1:17hold to the tradition of men.
- 1:21He was also saying to them, you are
- 1:24experts at setting aside the commandment
- 1:27in order to keep your tradition.
- 1:30For Moses said, "Honor your father and
- 1:34your mother." And he who speaks evil of
- 1:37father or mother is [music] to be put to
- 1:39death.
- 1:41But you say if a man says to his father
- 1:45or his mother, "Whatever I have that
- 1:47would help you is corban," that is to
- 1:50say, given to God, you no longer permit
- 1:54him to do anything for his father or
- 1:56mother, thus invalidating [music]
- 1:59the word of God by your tradition, which
- 2:02you have handed down, and you do many
- 2:05things such as that. So, they're coming
- 2:08to Jesus because they're trying to find
- 2:11fault. They're desperate to poke holes
- 2:15in the good thing God [music] is doing.
- 2:17And so, they they don't have much
- 2:20grounds, but they seize upon these
- 2:22peripheral things. It's like, "Oh, we
- 2:25have this tradition of washing after we
- 2:28go to the marketplace and ceremonially
- 2:30cleansing our copper pots and cups,
- 2:32[music] and your disciples aren't
- 2:34keeping these traditions." And so Jesus
- 2:37is saying, "You're hypocrites because
- 2:41you put more emphasis on the traditions
- 2:45that you have learned than on the
- 2:47commandment of God." You're teaching and
- 2:50and enforcing something that is part of
- 2:53an oral tradition. It's been handed down
- 2:55and people have been doing this for
- 2:57centuries and centuries. You may call it
- 2:59the Talmud. They probably didn't call it
- 3:01that yet, but it's the same sort of
- 3:03principle. But he's saying the Bible,
- 3:05the word of God, says things that you
- 3:07ignore all the time. So you're focused
- 3:10on washing cups and hands, but you teach
- 3:13people to dishonor their mother and
- 3:14father. And he says, Moses said, "Honor
- 3:17your father and mother, and he who
- 3:19speaks evil of father and mother is to
- 3:21be put to death." But you say that what
- 3:24people were going to use to help their
- 3:25parents can be given to God, and that
- 3:28way they don't have to honor their
- 3:30father and mother. So Jesus is angry at
- 3:33them that they have elevated a tradition
- 3:35to the same level as scripture. That's a
- 3:38powerful statement. It's him putting a
- 3:40hierarchy of priority and importance on
- 3:43the practices that we observe. Nothing
- 3:47should trump the commandment of God. And
- 3:50he quotes Isaiah. This people honors me
- 3:52with their lips, but their heart is far
- 3:54from me.
- 3:56And he tells them that they have they
- 3:58have invalidated the word of God by
- 4:01putting a greater emphasis on their
- 4:03customs than on what the Bible actually
- 4:06says.
- 4:08After he called the crowd to him, he
- 4:10again began saying to them, "Listen to
- 4:13me all of you and understand there is
- 4:16nothing outside of the man which can
- 4:18defile him if it goes into him. But the
- 4:21things which proceed out of the man are
- 4:25what defiled him. If anyone has ears to
- 4:28hear, let him hear. So he's telling
- 4:31them, what you think makes you unclean
- 4:34is whether you remembered to
- 4:36ceremonially wash your hands and wash
- 4:38your copper cups. But he's saying what
- 4:41actually makes you unclean is what comes
- 4:43out of you. What you say, what you
- 4:46think, how you treat people. That's
- 4:49where true holiness and unholiness are
- 4:52determined.
- 4:54When he had left the crowd and entered
- 4:56the house, his disciples questioned him
- 4:58about the parable, the parable of what
- 5:00goes out versus what comes in. And he
- 5:03said to them, "Are you so lacking in
- 5:06understanding also?
- 5:08Do you not understand that whatever goes
- 5:11into the man from outside cannot defile
- 5:14him? because it does not go into his
- 5:16heart but into his stomach and is
- 5:19eliminated. Thus he declared all foods
- 5:22clean.
- 5:24So Mark is saying Jesus is telling them
- 5:27if you want to talk about defilement in
- 5:29terms of righteous or unrighteous,
- 5:32you can't defile someone by what goes
- 5:34into them because it goes into his
- 5:35belly. The only thing that defiles
- 5:37someone is what goes into his heart.
- 5:40And what's defiling people is what's
- 5:42coming out of their mouth from their
- 5:43heart.
- 5:44And he was saying that which proceeds
- 5:47out of the man, that is what defiles the
- 5:49man. For from within, out of the heart
- 5:54of men, proceed the evil thoughts,
- 5:59fornications,
- 6:01thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of
- 6:04coveting, and wickedness, as well as
- 6:08deceit, sensuality, envy, slander,
- 6:12pride, and foolishness.
- 6:15All these things proceed from within and
- 6:20defile the man. This is holiness.
- 6:24It's not about the external things that
- 6:27you can observe. If those external
- 6:30things are an accurate reflection of an
- 6:32inner compartment of heart, then praise
- 6:35God.
- 6:37But what God is looking on is the
- 6:39condition of our heart. So the first
- 6:41thing that he names when he speaks of
- 6:44the evil that ruins holiness is
- 6:47thoughts.
- 6:49Evil thoughts is the first thing he
- 6:52names in the defilements that ruin the
- 6:56sanctity of a human being.
- 6:58Fornications,
- 7:01thefts,
- 7:02murders, adulteries, all of these are
- 7:06thoughts. These are feelings. These are
- 7:09coming from inside and they mature into
- 7:11actions. And then he names deeds of
- 7:15coveting and wickedness as well as
- 7:18deceit, dishonesty,
- 7:20sensuality, envy, slander, pride, and
- 7:25foolishness.
- 7:27All these evil things proceed from
- 7:31within and defile a man. So when we
- 7:34encounter these thoughts and we kill
- 7:37them
- 7:39when they're still thoughts, they don't
- 7:42proceed out of us and they don't defile
- 7:45us. But when we allow ourselves to
- 7:48become a conduit of the evil, of the
- 7:51thoughts of the vile of our hearts, then
- 7:54we are defiled by them.
- 7:58Jesus got up and went away from there to
- 8:00the region of Ty. And when he had
- 8:02entered a house, he wanted no one to
- 8:05know of it. Yet he could not escape
- 8:07notice. But after hearing of him, a
- 8:10woman whose little daughter had an
- 8:12unclean spirit immediately came and fell
- 8:15at his feet.
- 8:17Now the woman was a gentile
- 8:21of the Syrofenician race, and she kept
- 8:24asking him to cast the demon out of her
- 8:27daughter.
- 8:29And he was saying to her, "Let the
- 8:32children be satisfied first, for it is
- 8:35not good to take the children's bread
- 8:38and throw it to the dogs."
- 8:42Jesus is in a foreign place and a
- 8:45gentile comes and Mark wants us to know
- 8:48that this woman is a gentile and that's
- 8:51why he's treating her this way.
- 8:53God's grace is flowing within his
- 8:56covenant of love. And those who are
- 8:58outside that covenant, they they may
- 9:01want something from God, but they want
- 9:03it like spiritual adultery. They want
- 9:06God to be mixed with their other idols
- 9:09and false gods and demons that they
- 9:11worship. And so, it's a matter of
- 9:14holiness for God that he's not going to
- 9:16become one of the deities in your
- 9:19pantheon of false gods. So he's not
- 9:22going to join with the other idols that
- 9:24this gentile is worshiping. So he
- 9:27rejects her and he says it's not good to
- 9:30take the children's bread. The children
- 9:33are the lost sheep of the house of
- 9:34Israel. It's not good to take the
- 9:37children's bread and toss it to dogs.
- 9:41He's saying you're not a child. You're
- 9:43not part of the family. You've put
- 9:45yourself outside the family. you're
- 9:47outside the covenant of Israel where the
- 9:50blessing is coming.
- 9:52And this is a pretty harsh statement,
- 9:56but it's not intended to offend this
- 9:58person. It's not a racist statement.
- 10:02It's actually an invitation.
- 10:05It's an invitation that looks like
- 10:07rejection. But what he's actually
- 10:09inviting her to do is make a decision
- 10:12that gets her out of the camp of the
- 10:15condemned and into the camp of the
- 10:17blessed. So his provocation is not to
- 10:21offend her when he calls her a dog. It's
- 10:23to produce this.
- 10:26But she answered and said to him, "Yes,
- 10:29Lord."
- 10:31Two words, "Yes." She's showing
- 10:34agreement. She's saying, "That's the
- 10:36truth." And then she's making a
- 10:38statement about who her Lord is. She's
- 10:41calling him Lord. Now, if he's her Lord,
- 10:43she's no longer a pagan. She's no longer
- 10:48making him one of the options in the
- 10:50demons she worships. She's making him
- 10:53Lord. Yes, Lord. But even the dogs under
- 10:58the table feed on the children's crumbs.
- 11:02She's acknowledging, "I don't deserve
- 11:05it. I'm not special. I'm not part of the
- 11:08covenant, but I have a need and I'm
- 11:12willing to change in order to get it.
- 11:16And he said to her, because of this
- 11:19answer,
- 11:21go the demon has gone out of your
- 11:24daughter.
- 11:26Literally, it means the demon is thrown
- 11:29out of your daughter.
- 11:32This answer released grace into her
- 11:36family. This answer opened a floodgate
- 11:41of God's mercy. And the demon [music]
- 11:44went flying out the opposite end of the
- 11:46pipe, so to speak.
- 11:49And going back to her home, she found
- 11:52the child lying on the bed, the demon
- 11:55having left. Again he went out from the
- 11:58region of Ty and came through Siden to
- 12:01the Sea of Galilee within the region of
- 12:04Dicopoulos.
- 12:06They brought to him one who was deaf and
- 12:09spoke with difficulty and they implored
- 12:12him to lay his hand on him. Jesus took
- 12:14him aside
- 12:16from the crowd by himself and [music]
- 12:18put his fingers into his ears. And after
- 12:21spitting, he touched his tongue with
- 12:23saliva.
- 12:25And looking up to heaven with a deep
- 12:28sigh,
- 12:29he said to him, "Etha,"
- 12:34that is, "Be opened."
- 12:38and his ears were opened and the
- 12:41impediment of his tongue was removed.
- 12:44And he began speaking plainly.
- 12:48And he gave them orders not to tell
- 12:50anyone. But the more he ordered them,
- 12:52the more widely they continue to
- 12:54proclaim it. They were utterly
- 12:57astonished,
- 12:59saying, [music] "He has done all things
- 13:02well.
- 13:04He makes even the deaf to hear and the
- 13:07mute to speak.
- 13:12He does all things [music] well.
- 13:14What a understated
- 13:17generalization.
- 13:19But what a powerful commitment and
- 13:21confession about how God works in our
- 13:24lives.
- 13:25If he takes charge, if he touches the
- 13:29tongue, if he touches the ear, if he
- 13:33interacts with the pagan, everything
- 13:35changes. Nothing is the same after an
- 13:39interaction with God because he does
- 13:42everything well.
