- 0:00Mark 6:1. [music]
- 0:02In the previous chapter, Jesus has
- 0:05healed a demon-possessed man. Jesus has
- 0:09raised [music] a girl from the dead.
- 0:12Incredible things have been [music]
- 0:14happening. Miraculous powers. So, the
- 0:17chapter 6 begins like this. Jesus went
- 0:21out from there and came [music] into his
- 0:24hometown
- 0:26and his disciples followed him. So Mark
- 0:29is drawing a contrast. He went out from
- 0:32this environment of healings and [music]
- 0:34miracles and resurrections and he went
- 0:37to his hometown.
- 0:39When the Sabbath came, he began to teach
- 0:42in the synagogue. And the many listeners
- 0:46were astonished,
- 0:48saying, "Where did this man get these
- 0:50things? And what is this [music] wisdom
- 0:53given to him and such miracles as these
- 0:57performed [music]
- 0:58by his hands? Is not this the carpenter,
- 1:05the son of Mary and brother of James and
- 1:08Joseph [music] and Judas and Simon? Are
- 1:11not his sisters here with us?
- 1:15And they took offense at him.
- 1:19What a powerful transition. They start
- 1:22by saying, "Wow, where did he get this?"
- 1:26To, "Wait a minute, we know where he's
- 1:29from. We know who he is." And they drag
- 1:32him down to the familiar where they know
- 1:35how to put him in the box that they've
- 1:37created, of who he is, of who his
- 1:39siblings are, of where he comes from.
- 1:43And that's when they get offended. This
- 1:45is ridiculous. He can't be what he's
- 1:48pretending to be. And Jesus said to
- 1:50them, "A prophet is not without honor
- 1:54except in his hometown and among his own
- 1:58relatives and in his own household."
- 2:03And he could do no miracle there except
- 2:07that he laid his hands on a few sick
- 2:09people and healed them. And he wondered
- 2:13at their unbelief.
- 2:16And he was going around the villages
- 2:18teaching.
- 2:21So in this Jesus has connected honor to
- 2:24unbelief and unbelief to miracles.
- 2:29Why could he not do many miracles there?
- 2:31He's God.
- 2:33He's God in the flesh. Why could he not
- 2:36do? Was it because of a weakness on his
- 2:38part? No. It was because his grace and
- 2:42power only works through faith. And they
- 2:46didn't have any. And why did they not
- 2:48have any faith? Because they didn't have
- 2:51any honor. They couldn't humble
- 2:54themselves and value and appreciate him
- 2:58because familiarity breeds contempt. And
- 3:02they thought they knew him and so they
- 3:05couldn't really receive him.
- 3:07A prophet has honor everywhere but in
- 3:10his hometown. And he could not do many
- 3:12miracles because of their unbelief. So
- 3:15he has made honor and faith belief the
- 3:18same thing.
- 3:20And he's not able to work in the manner
- 3:23that he wanted to.
- 3:25And he summoned the twel and began to
- 3:27send them out in pairs and gave them
- 3:29authority over the unclean spirits. And
- 3:32he instructed them that they should take
- 3:34nothing for their journey except a mere
- 3:37staff, no bread, no bag, no money in
- 3:39their belt, but to wear sandals. And he
- 3:42added, "Do not put on two tunics." And
- 3:45he said to them, "Wherever you enter a
- 3:48house, stay there until you leave town.
- 3:51Any place that does not receive you or
- 3:54listen to you as you go out from there,
- 3:56shake the dust off the soles of your
- 3:58feet for a testimony against them." They
- 4:02went out and preached that men should
- 4:05repent. and they were casting out many
- 4:07demons and they were anointing with oil
- 4:10many sick people and healing them. So in
- 4:14this he's telling them don't take
- 4:17provisions. Instead
- 4:20let the people you're ministering to
- 4:22help you. So don't take two tunics,
- 4:27don't take um an extra pair of shoes.
- 4:30Don't take extra money. just keep it
- 4:32real life and go in and if someone
- 4:37receives you into their home, stay
- 4:39there. He's wanting to build
- 4:41relationships. He's not wanting the
- 4:44disciples to come in as outsiders or
- 4:47professionals. He's wanting them to go
- 4:49in and build friendships that are
- 4:51lasting. He's wanting to build a network
- 4:54of faith among the villages of Israel so
- 4:58that a work can happen more quickly in
- 5:00due season. And he says, if if they do
- 5:04not receive you when you leave the town,
- 5:06shake the dust off of your the soles of
- 5:08your feet. Don't even let the dust of
- 5:10unbelief cling to you. This is a
- 5:13testimony against them. You don't have
- 5:16any part in what we're doing. You have
- 5:18your unbelief. You have your dishonor.
- 5:21We're not even taking the dust out of
- 5:22your town. You can keep it all because
- 5:24we're moving on to do the will of God.
- 5:28And King Herod heard of it. He heard of
- 5:31the disciples traveling through and
- 5:33healing.
- 5:34For his name had become well known.
- 5:37Jesus's name had become well known. And
- 5:39people were saying, "John the Baptist
- 5:41has risen from the dead and that is why
- 5:44these miraculous powers are at work in
- 5:46him." But others were saying, "He is
- 5:49Elijah." And others were saying, "He is
- 5:51a prophet like one of the prophets of
- 5:53old." But when Herod heard of it, he
- 5:56kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has
- 5:59risen." Herod's guilty. He's a monster.
- 6:03He's killed the prophet John. And he's
- 6:06scared that maybe Jesus is actually John
- 6:09come back from the dead.
- 6:12For Herod himself had sent and had John
- 6:14arrested and bound in prison on account
- 6:17of Herodiius, the wife of his brother
- 6:19Philillip, because he had married her.
- 6:21For John had been saying to Herod, "It
- 6:24is not lawful for you to have your
- 6:26brother's wife." Herodiius had a grudge
- 6:29against him and wanted him put to death
- 6:32and could not do so. For Herod was
- 6:35afraid of John, knowing that he was a
- 6:38righteous and holy man, and he kept him
- 6:40safe.
- 6:42And when he heard him, he was very
- 6:44perplexed.
- 6:46But he used to enjoy listening to him.
- 6:49This is what it looks like to be
- 6:51fascinated with the truth of God, but
- 6:54not convicted or changed by it. When he
- 6:58would hear John, he was perplexed.
- 7:02But he didn't even have any of the four
- 7:04oils. Nothing could happen. But he's
- 7:07fascinated. He enjoys it. And he's he's
- 7:10actually afraid of John. The powers that
- 7:14be are afraid of the truth tellers.
- 7:17And so he keeps him safe, but he's got
- 7:19this new wife who wants to kill him.
- 7:24A strategic day came when Herod on his
- 7:27birthday gave a banquet for his lords
- 7:29and military commanders and the leading
- 7:32men of Galilee.
- 7:34And when the daughter of Herodiius
- 7:36herself came in and danced, she pleased
- 7:39Herod and his dinner guests. And the
- 7:42king said to the girl, "Ask me for
- 7:45whatever you want, and I will give it to
- 7:47you." And he swore to her, "Whatever you
- 7:50ask of me, I will give it to you up to
- 7:52half my kingdom."
- 7:54And she went out and said to her mother,
- 7:56"What shall I ask for?"
- 7:59This is how powerful John the Baptist
- 8:01was. He was worth more than half the
- 8:04kingdom.
- 8:07And she went out and asked her mother,
- 8:08"What shall I ask for?" And she said,
- 8:11"The head of John the Baptist."
- 8:15Immediately she came in in a hurry to
- 8:18the king and asked, saying, "I want you
- 8:21to give me at once the head of John the
- 8:23Baptist on a platter."
- 8:28And although the king was very sorry,
- 8:32yet because of his oaths and because of
- 8:35his dinner guests, he was unwilling to
- 8:38refuse her.
- 8:40Immediately the king sent an executioner
- 8:45and commanded him to bring back his
- 8:47head. And he went and had him beheaded
- 8:50in the prison and brought his head on a
- 8:53platter and gave it to the girl. And the
- 8:56girl gave it to her mother. When his
- 8:59disciples heard about this, they came
- 9:01and took away his body and laid it in a
- 9:04tomb. [clears throat]
- 9:06The apostles gathered together with
- 9:08Jesus, and they reported to him all that
- 9:10they had done and taught.
- 9:14And Jesus said to them, "Come away by
- 9:17yourselves to a secluded place and rest
- 9:19a while." For there were many people
- 9:22coming and going, and they did not even
- 9:24have time to eat. They went away in the
- 9:27boat to a secluded place by themselves.
- 9:32So in this story, we see the power and
- 9:35influence of a righteous man, John the
- 9:37Baptist, and how he gets a target put on
- 9:40his head by those who are tormented by
- 9:43the truth that he speaks. And that his
- 9:47life was more than half of Herod's
- 9:49kingdom.
- 9:50That's why they had to kill him. And we
- 9:53see that sorrow is not repentance.
- 9:57Herod was very sorrowful, but he was not
- 10:00unwilling to oblige the evil of his own
- 10:04oaths and the evil of the of the girl
- 10:07and the woman whom he had accepted.
- 10:11And then we see them coming and
- 10:12reporting to Jesus this and all the
- 10:15miracles that the apostles had been
- 10:17doing. This is a terrifying coincidence.
- 10:22In just the moment when the disciples of
- 10:25Jesus are performing the most miracles
- 10:27and doing the most ministry, that's when
- 10:29the word comes that John the Baptist has
- 10:32been beheaded. It's a bleak day and
- 10:36there's so many people Jesus says come
- 10:38aside and rest.
- 10:40So the grace to preach, the grace to
- 10:43serve does not preclude the grace that
- 10:47is needed from being alone and resting.
- 10:50Says they weren't even able to eat. You
- 10:53feel like there's almost a need to mourn
- 10:55to process what's happened.
- 11:00The people saw them going, but the
- 11:02vacation doesn't really work very well.
- 11:05The people saw them going, and many
- 11:07recognized them and ran there together
- 11:09on foot from all the cities and got
- 11:12there ahead of them. When Jesus went
- 11:14ashore, he saw a large crowd. They
- 11:17arrived at the vacation spot and there
- 11:20was a multitude waiting for ministry.
- 11:24When Jesus went ashore, he saw a large
- 11:26crowd and he felt, [snorts] what did he
- 11:29feel for them? Compassion for them.
- 11:32because they were like sheep without a
- 11:34shepherd. And he began to teach them
- 11:36many things.
- 11:38When it was already quite late, his
- 11:41disciples came to him and said, "This
- 11:44place is desolate, and it is already
- 11:46quite late." We learn that their
- 11:49vacation spot was desolate. He wanted to
- 11:52get out in the wilderness. We learn that
- 11:54the people showed up, but we learn that
- 11:56the need to love the lost sheep is
- 12:00greater than the need to rest in Jesus.
- 12:03And so he starts teaching them because
- 12:06that's what the shepherd does. The
- 12:08disciples says, "This place is desolate
- 12:10and it is already quite late. Send them
- 12:13away so that they may go into the
- 12:16surrounding countryside and villages and
- 12:18buy themselves something to eat."
- 12:21I think they were a little disappointed
- 12:23that the vacation wasn't going well. So
- 12:26he's like, "Get rid of them. Send
- 12:28[clears throat] them home where they
- 12:29came from." And he answered them, "You
- 12:33give them something to eat.
- 12:36Make supper for them."
- 12:39And they said to him, "Shall we go and
- 12:42spend 200 dinari on bread and give them
- 12:45something to eat?"
- 12:48And he said to them, "How many loaves do
- 12:51you have? Go look."
- 12:55It's an interesting little statement
- 12:57that Mark adds here. He probably learned
- 12:59this from Peter who remembered the
- 13:01details well, but he doesn't say, "How
- 13:04many loaves do you have?" He says, "How
- 13:05many loaves do you have? Go look.
- 13:08Go take a second look at what you think
- 13:10you don't have and what you think you do
- 13:13have because God's going to use it
- 13:15differently than you expect.
- 13:18And when they found out, they said,
- 13:19"Five loaves and two fish." And he
- 13:23commanded them all to sit down by groups
- 13:25on the green grass. They sat down in
- 13:27groups of hundreds and 50s. And he took
- 13:31the five loaves and the two fish. And
- 13:34looking up toward heaven, he blessed the
- 13:36food and broke the loaves. And he kept
- 13:40giving them to the disciples to set
- 13:43before them. And he divided up the two
- 13:45fish among them all. They all ate and
- 13:48were satisfied.
- 13:50And they picked up how many baskets? 12
- 13:54full baskets of the broken pieces and
- 13:58also of the fish. There were 5,000 men
- 14:02who ate the loaves.
- 14:06The parable is
- 14:09nothing is the same when broken in God's
- 14:13hands. Stop looking at what you don't
- 14:16have and start acknowledging and
- 14:18confessing what you do have and put it
- 14:21into God's hands and watch it become
- 14:24more than enough. Is it a coincidence
- 14:26that they gathered 12 baskets? No. There
- 14:31were 12 doubting apostles. So he gave
- 14:35them a full basket for each of them to
- 14:37carry in remembrance of their unbelief.
- 14:42Immediately Jesus made his disciples get
- 14:45into the boat and go on ahead of him to
- 14:48the other side to Besida while he
- 14:51himself was sending the crowd away.
- 14:54So he's performed a miracle. They've
- 14:57been unbelieving. He's given them 12
- 14:59extra baskets as a reminder of what just
- 15:02happened. But somehow he's bothered that
- 15:05they didn't get the miracle. And so in
- 15:08response to that, he makes them get into
- 15:12a boat.
- 15:14This isn't an accident. This isn't a
- 15:16fluke. They're going to encounter
- 15:18something in that boat that's going to
- 15:20help clarify what they missed in the
- 15:23miracle of the loaves and fishes.
- 15:26Immediately Jesus made his disciples get
- 15:29into the boat and go ahead of him to the
- 15:32other side to Betha. So he's going to
- 15:34go, but he wants them to go by
- 15:36themselves.
- 15:38While he while he himself was sending
- 15:40the crowd away. After bidding them
- 15:43farewell, he left for the mountain to
- 15:47pray.
- 15:51What is he praying up on the mountain?
- 15:53Is he praying, "God, open their eyes.
- 15:57God, increase their faith."
- 16:00Is he praying over the anguish that
- 16:03they're all facing over John's death?
- 16:06Maybe all of the above.
- 16:09When it was evening, the [clears throat]
- 16:11boat was in the middle of the sea, and
- 16:13he was alone on the land.
- 16:18Seeing them straining at the oars, for
- 16:22the wind was against them, at about the
- 16:25fourth watch of the night, he came to
- 16:27them walking on the sea, and he intended
- 16:32to pass by them.
- 16:37He wants them in that storm.
- 16:41He wants that storm to rattle loose from
- 16:44them their unbelief and bring them to a
- 16:48deeper place of awareness and engagement
- 16:53in what God is doing. This storm is not
- 16:57an accident. He sent them into the storm
- 17:00and he prays until he sees them in the
- 17:03storm.
- 17:05He might have prayed that storm down on
- 17:07them.
- 17:10And in the fourth watch of the night, he
- 17:12goes out and he's intending to walk
- 17:15right past them.
- 17:18But when they saw him,
- 17:21this coincidence, this rendevous
- 17:25with Jesus is going to reveal something
- 17:29about them.
- 17:30It's going to activate a faith in them
- 17:33that he needs to come alive.
- 17:37When they saw him walking on the sea,
- 17:41they suppose that it was a ghost and
- 17:44they cried out, "Things are going very
- 17:47bad for the disciples. They've got 12
- 17:50baskets of reminders of their unbelief
- 17:52in the boat, but they are straining
- 17:55against the orars. And it is the fourth
- 17:58watch of the night. And they are scared.
- 18:02And now they see something that is
- 18:05actually Jesus. But their unbelief tells
- 18:08them it's a ghost.
- 18:10And they go from being in trouble to
- 18:13being terrified.
- 18:15They cried [snorts] out. They're
- 18:17screaming in the boat
- 18:21for they all saw him and were terrified.
- 18:26But immediately he spoke with them and
- 18:29said to them, "Take courage.
- 18:33It is I.
- 18:35Do not be afraid."
- 18:40This is what he's wanting to say about
- 18:42their grief over John. This is what he's
- 18:45wanting to say about their unbelief and
- 18:48inability to meet the needs of the
- 18:50crowd. This is what he's saying to their
- 18:53storm. And this is what he's saying to
- 18:55their imagination that imagines he's a
- 18:58ghost and not the Lord. Then he got into
- 19:02the boat with them and the wind stopped
- 19:06and they were utterly astonished
- 19:09for they had not gained any insight from
- 19:15the incident of the loaves, but their
- 19:18hearts were hardened.
- 19:21When he performed the miracle of the
- 19:23loaves and fishes, they didn't fall on
- 19:25their knees and say, "God, what just
- 19:28happened?"
- 19:31They just passed out the food and they
- 19:34didn't even realize what was going on.
- 19:37And he wants to break through the stuper
- 19:41of their unbelieving frameworks and
- 19:44bring them to a place of faith.
- 19:50And the storm does it. The storm reveals
- 19:54to them who Jesus really is.
- 19:58And the writer says, Mark says they were
- 20:01utterly astonished. They shouldn't have
- 20:04been utterly astonished that he could
- 20:05walk on the water. They shouldn't have
- 20:07been utterly astonished
- 20:09that he was watching from the mountain
- 20:12while their storm was raging. They
- 20:14shouldn't have been utterly astonished
- 20:15that he could step into the boat and
- 20:17that the wind and waves could stop. They
- 20:19shouldn't be utterly astonished. They
- 20:21should be utterly empowered. They should
- 20:24already be calling on the name of the
- 20:26Lord themselves. They should be speaking
- 20:28to the winds and and [music] the waves.
- 20:31But they're utterly astonished for they
- 20:33had not gained any insight from the
- 20:35incident of the loaves. But their hearts
- 20:38were hardened. They are the soil that
- 20:42the seed is not getting inside of. When
- 20:45they had crossed over, they came to the
- 20:47land of Guanesseret
- 20:49and mured to shore.
- 20:52When they got out of the boat,
- 20:54immediately the people recognized him
- 20:57and ran about the whole country and
- 20:59began to carry here and there on their
- 21:02pallets [music] those who were sick to
- 21:04the place they heard he was. Wherever he
- 21:08entered villages or cities or
- 21:11countryside, [music] they were laying
- 21:12the sick in the marketplaces and
- 21:15imploring him that they might just
- 21:17[music] touch the fringe of his cloak.
- 21:20And as many as touched it were being
- 21:22cured.
- 21:26The vacation
- 21:28turned into a lesson. a lesson that was
- 21:31intended to dismantle
- 21:34not their peace but their complacency.
- 21:39God wanted to dismantle their
- 21:41complacency so that they could see what
- 21:44they were unaware of and living in the
- 21:47presence of the Lord of glory. The God
- 21:50of miracles was among them. They were
- 21:54handling the miracle, breaking it and
- 21:56handing it to others, but they weren't
- 21:58getting it. Their frameworks were
- 22:01explaining it some other way.
- 22:04But God has a way of preparing storms
- 22:06for us. Storms that are going to break
- 22:09us out of our complacency
- 22:12and that are going to plow up the ground
- 22:14until the seed of faith can germinate
- 22:17and bear fruit that can really help
- 22:19others. And that's going to be better
- 22:22even than a vacation.
