- 0:00Mark 5:1
- 0:02They came to the other side of the sea
- 0:05into the country of the garrison. When
- 0:08he got out of the boat, immediately a
- 0:10man from the tombs with an unclean
- 0:12spirit met him, and he had his dwelling
- 0:15among [music] the tombs, and no one was
- 0:17able to bind him anymore, even with
- 0:20chains.
- 0:22Remember that in chapter three when the
- 0:25Pharisees accused Jesus of casting out
- 0:28demons [music] by the ruler of demons
- 0:30Behel Zbub he said no you cannot enter a
- 0:33strong man's house unless you first bind
- 0:36the strong man and I told you that the
- 0:39strong man was the devil and the house
- 0:42was the temple of God that the person
- 0:44represented [music] and no one was able
- 0:47to bind him anymore even with chains
- 0:50because he had often been bound with
- 0:52shackles and chains, and the chains had
- 0:55been torn apart by him, and the shackles
- 0:57broken in pieces, and no one was strong
- 1:00enough to subdue him.
- 1:03Constantly, night and day, he was
- 1:05screaming among the tombs and in the
- 1:07mountains, and gashing himself with
- 1:10stones.
- 1:13Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up
- 1:15and bowed down before him. and shouting
- 1:18with a loud voice, he said, "What
- 1:21business do we have with each other,
- 1:23Jesus, son of the most high God? I
- 1:27implore you by God, do not torment me."
- 1:32For he had been saying to him, "Come out
- 1:34of the man, you unclean spirit."
- 1:37So Jesus was apparently repeatedly
- 1:40saying, "Come out of the man, you
- 1:42unclean spirit." And in response, the
- 1:45unclean spirit is speaking through the
- 1:48man. And like I've explained before,
- 1:51he's trying to declare who Jesus is
- 1:54because he wants to poison the well and
- 1:59make the word go out through the mouth
- 2:01of demonpossessed people.
- 2:05And Jesus was asking him, "What is your
- 2:08name?"
- 2:10And he said to him, "My name is Legion,
- 2:14for we are many."
- 2:18And he began to implore him earnestly
- 2:21not to send them out of the country.
- 2:25Now there was a large herd of swine
- 2:27feeding nearby on the mountains. The
- 2:30demons implored him, saying, "Send us
- 2:32into the swine so that we may enter
- 2:35them." Jesus gave them permission. And
- 2:39coming out, the unclean spirits entered
- 2:41the swine, and the herd rushed down the
- 2:44steep bank into the sea, about 2,000 of
- 2:48them, and they were drowned in the sea.
- 2:51Their herdsmen ran away and reported it
- 2:54to the city and in the country. And the
- 2:56people came out to see what had
- 2:58happened. They came to Jesus and
- 3:01observed the man who had been
- 3:04demon-possessed
- 3:06sitting down clothed and in his right
- 3:08mind, the very man who had had the
- 3:12legion. And they became frightened.
- 3:17Those who had seen it described to them
- 3:20how it had happened to the
- 3:20demon-possessed man and all about the
- 3:22swine. And they began to implore him,
- 3:27Jesus, to leave their region.
- 3:32As he was getting into the boat, the man
- 3:35who had been demon-possessed was
- 3:37imploring him that he might accompany
- 3:40him.
- 3:43and he did not let him. But he said, "Go
- 3:47home to your people
- 3:49and report to them what great things the
- 3:54Lord has done for you and how he had
- 3:57mercy on you."
- 4:00And he went away and began to proclaim
- 4:03in Dopoulos what great things Jesus had
- 4:07done for him. And everyone was amazed.
- 4:12First of all, the demon speaks and he
- 4:15says something very specific.
- 4:17He says, "What business do I have with
- 4:21you?
- 4:22The demons will not work with,
- 4:25collaborate with, partner with anything
- 4:28that God is doing. We can't be in
- 4:31business together." The demon is saying,
- 4:33"Then the demons do what they always do,
- 4:35and they say who Jesus is. And that's
- 4:38not because they are lying, but because
- 4:40they want to poison the well and make
- 4:43people hear who he is from the mouth of
- 4:45an idiot first.
- 4:48And then we're told that Jesus was
- 4:50saying to him, "Come out of the man."
- 4:52But then he asks the demon to identify
- 4:56himself. And the demon identifies that
- 4:59it is not one. It is a legion. It is a
- 5:03plurality. that this poor guy has become
- 5:07the house of a lot of evil spirits.
- 5:10And then we ask, why were the demons
- 5:13willing and even desperate
- 5:15[clears throat] to go into the swine
- 5:18but not to be cast out of all physical
- 5:23expression. And this is an insight that
- 5:27what the devil wants is incarnation.
- 5:30He wants to incarnate his ideas, his
- 5:34fears, his power, his evil spirits in
- 5:38human beings
- 5:40because he sees that we are God's temple
- 5:43made for incarnation. That we are the
- 5:46temple where God desires to dwell by his
- 5:49spirit. And so in his competition with
- 5:51God, the devil wants to take up
- 5:53residence in the same temple of God, the
- 5:57human body.
- 5:59And if he can't have the human body, it
- 6:01would be better to have the body of an
- 6:02animal, but he does not want to be
- 6:04dispossessed
- 6:06to roam in the waste places. The demon
- 6:09said in Matthew.
- 6:12And the next fascinating thing is that
- 6:16the gospel writer Mark wants us to
- 6:20understand the paradox, the absurdity
- 6:24that this town had grown accustomed to.
- 6:27a man breaking chains, gashing himself
- 6:31with stones, crying out and living among
- 6:34the tombs. They had grown accustomed to
- 6:37the incarnation of a legion of demons in
- 6:40their town. And they weren't doing
- 6:43anything about that. But when the power
- 6:45of God comes and sets a man free,
- 6:49they're terrified.
- 6:52And he uses this word, they were
- 6:54frightened. And then he uses this word
- 6:56they implored Jesus. It means they
- 7:01begged him with desperation.
- 7:03[snorts] Please get out of our lives.
- 7:06Please leave our church, our town. We
- 7:10can't take this kind of power of the
- 7:12spirit.
- 7:14And then Mark uses the same word to
- 7:18describe the attitude of the man who's
- 7:21been delivered. And he implores Jesus,
- 7:25please let me go with you.
- 7:28Please let me be part. And this shows
- 7:32the difference between the attitude of
- 7:36someone who's been delivered by a legion
- 7:38of oppression versus the attitude of
- 7:41people who've just grown accustomed to
- 7:43the devil tormenting others and don't
- 7:47want God interfering with the status
- 7:49quo.
- 7:51And Jesus's words to the man are so
- 7:53powerful.
- 7:56He says, "Go home to your people."
- 7:59These people who are rejecting Jesus,
- 8:01Jesus still has a burden for them. He
- 8:04wants them to be evangelized.
- 8:07So in many cases, he tells the healed
- 8:09person not to tell anyone. But in this
- 8:12case, he tells the man, "Go tell your
- 8:17people, your people that are begging me
- 8:19to leave, go tell them
- 8:23all the great things the Lord has done
- 8:26for you." Help them see this isn't
- 8:28something to be afraid of. Help them see
- 8:31that this is something great and how he
- 8:34has had mercy on you.
- 8:38If you want to know how to evangelize,
- 8:40tell your people the wonderful things
- 8:43God has done and let them feel the mercy
- 8:47that he has shown to you. And so he went
- 8:50away and he did it and he began to
- 8:52proclaim what great things Jesus had
- 8:56done for him and everyone was amazed.
- 9:00And so we have a beginning of a change.
- 9:03We have people who are terribly
- 9:05frightened begging him to leave. And now
- 9:07we have people being very amazed when
- 9:10they start to hear it from their own
- 9:12countrymen.
- 9:15It's interesting that he tells him to go
- 9:17tell your people all the things that the
- 9:20Lord has done for you. And it says, "So
- 9:23he told all that Jesus had done for
- 9:26him." It's one of those subtle little
- 9:28hints that Jesus was the Lord, that
- 9:30Jesus was God.
- 9:33When Jesus had crossed over again in the
- 9:35boat to the other side, a large crowd
- 9:38gathered around him. And so he stayed by
- 9:41the seashore.
- 9:42One of the synagogue officials named
- 9:44Gyrus came up and on seeing him fell at
- 9:49his feet
- 9:51and implored him earnestly, saying, "My
- 9:54little daughter is at the point of
- 9:56death. Please come and lay your hands on
- 10:00her so that she will get well and live."
- 10:04And he went off with him. And a large
- 10:06crowd was following him and pressing in
- 10:09on him. A woman who had a hemorrhage for
- 10:1312 years and had endured much at the
- 10:16hands of many physicians and had spent
- 10:19all she had and was not helped at all,
- 10:23but rather had grown worse. After
- 10:26hearing about Jesus, she came up in the
- 10:29crowd behind him and touched his cloak.
- 10:33For she thought, "If I just touch his
- 10:36garments, I will get well."
- 10:39Immediately the flow of her blood was
- 10:41dried up and she felt in her body that
- 10:45she was healed of her affliction.
- 10:49Immediately Jesus perceiving in himself
- 10:52that the power proceeding from him had
- 10:55gone forth turned around in the crowd
- 10:58and said, "Who touched my garments?"
- 11:03And his disciples said to him, "You see
- 11:06the crowd pressing in on you, and you
- 11:09say, "Who touched me?"
- 11:13And he looked around to see the woman
- 11:15who had done this. But the woman,
- 11:17fearing and trembling, aware of what had
- 11:20happened to her, came and fell down
- 11:23before him, and told him the whole
- 11:25truth. And he said to her, "Daughter,
- 11:30your faith has made you well.
- 11:34Go in peace and be healed of your
- 11:37affliction."
- 11:40Now, this is a powerful thing that the
- 11:43Bible is trying to teach us. And we know
- 11:46that in the story of Matthew that this
- 11:49synagogue official and the woman with
- 11:52the hemorrhage, they come up when Jesus
- 11:55is preaching something specific. He's
- 11:58preaching about new wine skins. So their
- 12:01interventionist immediate approach is
- 12:05them acting on a new way of responding,
- 12:08a new wine skinin if you will.
- 12:11But what Mark wants us to see is that
- 12:16many people were touching Jesus, but
- 12:20only one was touching with a prayer,
- 12:23touching with faith, touching with a
- 12:26need, touching while saying to herself,
- 12:29"I know I will be healed." And so he did
- 12:33not feel power go out of him when any of
- 12:36the crowd jostled him as he moved. But
- 12:40when somebody touched him in faith,
- 12:44he sensed that the power that was always
- 12:47going forth had found
- 12:50a destination that it had found a mark
- 12:54and was making a difference for
- 12:55somebody. And so he said, "Who touched
- 12:58me?"
- 13:00God felt that the power that was
- 13:03available
- 13:04from him had found a home in someone's
- 13:08heart. And the disciples are like,
- 13:10"Don't ask who touched you. Look how
- 13:12many people are in this crowd." And he
- 13:14said, "No, no, somebody touched me
- 13:17differently." And this is a a word to us
- 13:21that it's not enough to be near God and
- 13:23to even feel his presence or even
- 13:26encounter a touch with him. But when we
- 13:29have a need, we need to touch him with
- 13:31expectation. We need to touch him with
- 13:34faith. We need to touch him with
- 13:36confession, saying, "If I do this,
- 13:39something's going to be different." And
- 13:41when we touch him in that way, we
- 13:43receive something that the crowd around
- 13:45him was not receiving.
- 13:47While he was still speaking, they came
- 13:50from the house of the synagogue
- 13:51officials, saying, "Your daughter has
- 13:53died. Why trouble the teacher anymore?
- 13:58But Jesus, overhearing what was being
- 14:01spoken, said to the synagogue official,
- 14:04"Do not be afraid any longer. Only
- 14:07believe."
- 14:10And he allowed no one to accompany him
- 14:13except Peter and James and John, the
- 14:16brother of James. They came to the house
- 14:18of the synagogue official,
- 14:21and he saw a commotion and people loudly
- 14:25weeping and wailing.
- 14:28And entering in, he said to them, "Why
- 14:31make a commotion and weep? The child has
- 14:34not died, but is asleep."
- 14:38They began laughing at him.
- 14:41But putting them all out, he took along
- 14:45the child's father and mother and his
- 14:48own companions and entered the room
- 14:51where the child was.
- 14:54Taking the child by the hand, he said to
- 14:58her, "Talitha kum," which translated
- 15:02means, "Little girl, I say to you, get
- 15:06up."
- 15:09Immediately the girl got up and began to
- 15:11walk, for she was 12 years old. And
- 15:15immediately they were completely
- 15:17astounded.
- 15:19And he gave them strict orders that no
- 15:21one should know about this. And he said
- 15:24that something should be given her to
- 15:26eat.
- 15:27I love the humanity of this.
- 15:30I love that
- 15:34in their unbelief, the companions of the
- 15:36synagogue official feel that while Jesus
- 15:40has been delayed performing another
- 15:42miracle, he's no longer needed because
- 15:45the child is dead. And Jesus tells the
- 15:48man, "Do not be afraid any longer. Only
- 15:51believe." So, he's saying, "You've been
- 15:54afraid this whole time, but you can stop
- 15:57being afraid because I'm able to raise
- 16:00the dead and let's just go see what God
- 16:02is going to do." And when he comes to
- 16:04the house, he sees a commotion and he
- 16:08says something. He says, "Why make a
- 16:11commotion and weep? The child has not
- 16:13died but is asleep." Now, that does not
- 16:16contradict the fact that the child was
- 16:18dead. It means that death in the
- 16:21presence of the living God means
- 16:23something different than death outside
- 16:25of the presence of the living God.
- 16:28Death away from Jesus is permanent.
- 16:32Death with Jesus is as easy to resolve
- 16:35as sleep.
- 16:38So he's not lying and he's not playing
- 16:40makeelie. He's trying to help them see
- 16:42that death means something different
- 16:45with the Lord who [music] raises the
- 16:46dead. And they begin to laugh at him.
- 16:50They go from weeping and wailing and
- 16:53creating a commotion that he can't stand
- 16:56to laughing at him.
- 16:58And he puts them out. Get out. So he has
- 17:03to get rid of all faithlessness. He has
- 17:06to get rid of all the commotion that is
- 17:10repeating and focusing on the framework
- 17:13of unbelief. Get them out of the house.
- 17:17And he brings along those who have faith
- 17:20and love. The child's mother, the
- 17:23child's father,
- 17:26who he's told only believe, and his own
- 17:28companions.
- 17:30And then look at the tenderness.
- 17:33He doesn't stand outside and tell her to
- 17:36rise up.
- 17:38That's what he did with Lazarus. But in
- 17:40this case, it's a little girl. And so
- 17:44Mark tells us that he took her by the
- 17:46hand. Taking the child by the hand, he
- 17:50said to her, "Little girl, I say to you,
- 17:54get up."
- 17:56Immediately the girl got up and began to
- 17:58walk. And Mark adds, because she was 12
- 18:01years old.
- 18:04Little detail that's helpful. And
- 18:06immediately they were completely
- 18:08astounded. We got two immediates that
- 18:10Mark got in here. Immediately she got up
- 18:13and immediately they are astounded.
- 18:16And then he gave them strict orders not
- 18:19to report this. And then he tells them,
- 18:21"Give her something to eat." It's like
- 18:25he didn't solve her human condition. He
- 18:28healed her. He raised her from the dead,
- 18:30but he didn't fill her body. She still
- 18:32needs some supper. So give her something
- 18:35to eat. Very human. Very hopeful.
