- 0:00Mark [music] 16:1
- 0:03When the Sabbath was over, Mary
- 0:06Magdalene and Mary the mother of James
- 0:08[music] and Salem brought spices so that
- 0:12they may come and anoint Jesus. [music]
- 0:15So this is Sunday morning after the
- 0:18Sabbath and they're going to go and
- 0:21they're [music] going to give spices to
- 0:23the dead body so that they can show
- 0:26respect
- 0:28as their custom was.
- 0:32Very early on the first day of the week,
- 0:34Sunday morning, they came to the tomb
- 0:37when the sun had risen.
- 0:40They were saying to one another, "Who
- 0:42will roll away the stone for us from the
- 0:44entrance of the tomb?"
- 0:47Looking up, they saw that the stone had
- 0:50already been rolled away, although it
- 0:53was [music] extremely large.
- 0:56Entering the tomb, they saw a young man
- 0:59sitting at the right wearing a white
- 1:02robe, and they were amazed.
- 1:05And he said to them, "Do not be amazed.
- 1:09You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene
- 1:12who has been crucified.
- 1:15He has risen.
- 1:17He is not here. Behold, here is the
- 1:21place where they laid him.
- 1:23But go tell his disciples and Peter, he
- 1:27is going ahead of you to Galilee. There
- 1:29you will see him just as he told you.
- 1:33They went out and fled from the tomb,
- 1:36for trembling and astonishment had
- 1:39gripped them, [music] and they said
- 1:40nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
- 1:45They do not have the framework for
- 1:48[music] resurrection. They do not know
- 1:51what to do with this information, and it
- 1:53puts them into a full-on panic.
- 1:56Now after he had risen early on the
- 1:58first day of the week, he first appeared
- 2:01to Mary Magdalene from whom he had cast
- 2:04out seven demons.
- 2:07She went and reported to those who had
- 2:09been with him while they were mourning
- 2:12and weeping.
- 2:14When they heard that he was alive and
- 2:17had been seen by her, they refused to
- 2:20[music] believe it.
- 2:23Jesus chooses to make his first
- 2:26appearance to someone whose word is
- 2:30going to be doubted.
- 2:33And he uses her to go tell others.
- 2:37They're going to see him in a few days.
- 2:39They're going to see him in a very short
- 2:41while.
- 2:42But he wants to see if they have the
- 2:44faith to believe it from someone who
- 2:47could be doubtful, from someone whose
- 2:49word could be questionable.
- 2:53When they heard it, when they heard that
- 2:55he was alive and had been seen by her,
- 2:59they refused to believe it. After that,
- 3:02he appeared in a different form to two
- 3:04of them while they were walking along on
- 3:07their way to the country. They went away
- 3:10and reported it to the others, but they
- 3:12did not believe them either.
- 3:16So, three witnesses have now testified,
- 3:21but he's showing the disciples how hard
- 3:23it is to believe that a resurrection has
- 3:26occurred. And this is going to help the
- 3:28disciples know how to bring the message
- 3:30to a world who hasn't seen it, but needs
- 3:33to believe it from people who did see it
- 3:36firsthand.
- 3:38Afterward, he appeared to the 11
- 3:40themselves as they were reclining at the
- 3:42table, and he reproached them for their
- 3:46unbelief and hardness of heart, because
- 3:50they had not believed those who had seen
- 3:52him after he had risen. And he said to
- 3:55them, "Go into all the world and preach
- 3:59the gospel to all creation."
- 4:04Matthew and Mark and Luke all have this
- 4:07version of the great commission. They
- 4:09all have their own version of the great
- 4:10commission. Here he says, "Go into all
- 4:13the world and preach the gospel to all
- 4:15creation." In Matthew he says, "Go into
- 4:18all the world and make disciples of all
- 4:21nations, baptizing them in the name of
- 4:24the Father and of the Son and of the
- 4:26Holy Ghost. And lo, I am with you
- 4:28always, even to the end of the age." And
- 4:31Luke, he quotes the same great
- 4:34commission that repentance and remission
- 4:37of sins would be preached in his name,
- 4:40beginning at Jerusalem to all nations.
- 4:43So here he just says, "Go into all the
- 4:46world and preach the gospel to all
- 4:47creation.
- 4:49He who has believed and has been
- 4:52baptized shall be saved, but he who has
- 4:55disbelieved shall be condemned."
- 4:58These signs will accompany those who
- 5:01believe
- 5:03in my name. They will cast out demons.
- 5:06They will speak with new tongues. They
- 5:08will pick up serpents. And if they drink
- 5:11any deadly poison, it will not hurt
- 5:12them. They will lay hands on the sick
- 5:15and they will recover. So there's Luke's
- 5:19version of the great commission. And
- 5:21it's by looking at all three that we get
- 5:23a fuller picture of the message that he
- 5:25preached.
- 5:27He's preaching a message
- 5:30of outreach to the nations, baptism in
- 5:34his name,
- 5:36and that power and signs will follow.
- 5:41These signs will follow those who have
- 5:43believed in my name. They will cast out
- 5:45demons. They will speak with new
- 5:47tongues. They will pick up serpents.
- 5:49[music]
- 5:50And if they drink any deadly poison, it
- 5:52will not hurt them. They will lay hands
- 5:54on the sick and they will recover.
- 5:57So then when the Lord Jesus had [music]
- 6:00spoken to them, he was received up into
- 6:03heaven and sat down [music] at the right
- 6:05hand of God. And they went out and
- 6:08preached everywhere while the Lord
- 6:10[music] worked with them and confirmed
- 6:13the word by the signs that followed.
- 6:17They weren't just bringing a message, a
- 6:19story. They were bringing [music] a word
- 6:22that had power and signs that followed.
- 6:25And they promptly reported all these
- 6:27instructions to Peter and his
- 6:30companions. And after that, Jesus
- 6:32himself sent out through them from east
- 6:35to west the sacred and imperishable
- 6:38proclamation of eternal salvation.
- 6:44Jesus himself is the one who is speaking
- 6:47through them. Jesus himself, even though
- 6:50he was ascended into heaven, he is the
- 6:52one bringing the eternal proclamation
- 6:55through them to all the world.
- 6:58A hope that death has been swallowed up
- 7:01by victory.
- 7:03That the grave has lost its sting. That
- 7:06that which holds people in bondage all
- 7:08their lifetime has been defeated at
- 7:10[music] the cross. That judgment has
- 7:13been satisfied.
- 7:15that mercy has triumphed over judgment.
- 7:18That the atonement has been made and a
- 7:21new and living way has been opened to
- 7:24the holy place that is no longer in the
- 7:27ark of the covenant but is now the new
- 7:29covenant. And the holy place is heaven
- 7:32where we have access by one spirit to
- 7:35one father through the blood of Jesus
- 7:37Christ.
- 7:39That's the end of the book of Mark.
- 7:52>> [music]
