- 0:00Mark 15:1 [music]
- 0:03Early in the morning, the chief priests
- 0:06with the elders and scribes and the
- 0:08whole council immediately held [music] a
- 0:11consultation
- 0:12and binding Jesus, they led him away and
- 0:16delivered him to Pilate.
- 0:19Pilate questioned him, "Are you the king
- 0:22of the Jews?"
- 0:25And he answered him, "It is as you say."
- 0:29The chief priests [music] began to
- 0:31accuse him harshly.
- 0:33Then Pilate questioned him again,
- 0:35saying, "Do you not answer?
- 0:39See how many charges they bring against
- 0:41you?"
- 0:42But Jesus made no further answer. So
- 0:45Pilate was amazed.
- 0:50Now at the [music] feast he used to
- 0:52release for them any one prisoner whom
- 0:54they requested.
- 0:56The man named Barabbus
- 0:59had been imprisoned with the
- 1:02insurrectionists
- 1:04who had committed murder in the
- 1:06insurrection.
- 1:09The crowd went up and began asking him
- 1:12to do as he had been [music] accustomed
- 1:14to do for them.
- 1:15Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you
- 1:18want me to release for you the king of
- 1:20the Jews?"
- 1:23So, we have an insurrectionist.
- 1:26We have a revolt. A bunch of people rose
- 1:30up against [music] the Roman state and
- 1:32they've been put in prison and they're
- 1:34going to be crucified. They're
- 1:36murderers. One of them is Barabbus.
- 1:40And so on the day of the feast, [music]
- 1:42it is Pilate's custom to release one of
- 1:44the prisoners. And they come and ask him
- 1:47to do it. And he says, "Do you want me
- 1:50to release to you? Do you want me to
- 1:53release for you the king of the Jews?"
- 1:57Pilot's thinking, "Maybe I'll release
- 1:58Jesus."
- 2:00This lamb, this one who's never hurt
- 2:03anyone, who's healed, who's cleansed,
- 2:07who's preached, who's taught love of
- 2:10one's neighbor, and turning the other
- 2:11cheek. Would you like me to release him
- 2:14to you?
- 2:16For he was aware that the chief priest
- 2:19had handed him over because of envy.
- 2:23Pilate knows that Jesus has no real
- 2:25charges. They just are envious of the
- 2:28attention he's getting. He has an
- 2:31influence and a sway and an impact on
- 2:33the people that they don't have.
- 2:36And they envy that.
- 2:40But the chief priest stirred up the
- 2:42crowd to ask him to release Barabus for
- 2:45them.
- 2:47Give us the murderer.
- 2:50Give us the insurrectionist.
- 2:53But take the son of God. Take the lamb.
- 2:56We don't want him.
- 3:00Answering again, Pilate said to them,
- 3:02"Then what shall I do with him whom you
- 3:05call the king of the Jews?"
- 3:08They shouted back, "Crucify him!"
- 3:15Because he threatens our authority. We
- 3:18are envious of him.
- 3:21He convicts us with the truth. So kill
- 3:25him even though he's never hurt a person
- 3:28in his life.
- 3:30But Pilate said to them, "Why? What evil
- 3:33has he done?"
- 3:37But they shouted all the more, "Crucify
- 3:40him!"
- 3:43Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate
- 3:48released Barabus for them.
- 3:51And after having Jesus scourged,
- 3:54he handed him over to be crucified.
- 3:59Scourged means that they would give him
- 4:0140 lashes with a whip made of strands of
- 4:05leather with bits of glass and pottery
- 4:08shards and bone tied into the leather
- 4:12strands.
- 4:14Nine strands. It was called the cat of
- 4:16nine tails. And they would beat him
- 4:19until it would wrap around his body and
- 4:22rip flesh from those sharp shards of
- 4:25pottery or glass or whatnot.
- 4:28So that was the custom that he would
- 4:30lash the man and then turn him over.
- 4:35The soldiers took him away
- 4:38into the palace that is the pritorium
- 4:41and they called together the whole Roman
- 4:44cohort,
- 4:47the battalion literally an entire group
- 4:50of soldiers,
- 4:5220 plus soldiers gather around him.
- 4:55They dress Jesus up in purple
- 4:58and after twisting a crown of thorns,
- 5:01they put it on him and they begin to
- 5:04acclaim him. Hail, King of the Jews.
- 5:11So, they're going to make a complete
- 5:12joke out of him. Put a put a purple robe
- 5:16on him to make a mockery of the idea
- 5:19that he's a king. And let's give him a
- 5:21crown, too. But make sure it's made of
- 5:23thorns that smash down into his brow.
- 5:28And then get the entire Roman battalion
- 5:31around him.
- 5:33Hail, King of the Jews. They kept
- 5:35beating his head with a reed and
- 5:38spitting on him and kneeling and bowing
- 5:41before him.
- 5:43After they had mocked him, they took the
- 5:45purple robe off of him and put his own
- 5:48garments on him, and they led him out to
- 5:51crucify him.
- 5:54They pressed into service a passer by
- 5:57coming from the country, Simon ofSirene,
- 6:00the father of Alexander and Rufus, to
- 6:03bear his cross.
- 6:07So Jesus is so weary from his beating
- 6:10and scourging and mocking that he's not
- 6:13able to carry his own cross which would
- 6:16have been the custom.
- 6:19So the writer of of the story here is
- 6:22wanting us to know that that that's how
- 6:25exhausted he was by this point. And they
- 6:29press into service this man named Simon
- 6:32ofSirene.Sirene
- 6:34Sirene is a city in northern Africa in
- 6:38Libya.
- 6:40So this would have been a Jewish man
- 6:44from the diaspora
- 6:46who was visiting Jerusalem likely
- 6:48because of the Passover.
- 6:50And it says the father of Alexander and
- 6:53Rufus
- 6:55which means that likely Alexander and
- 6:59Rufus were members of the church in the
- 7:02time when Mark wrote this. So he wants
- 7:05them to know and we know that in in
- 7:07Romans in the final chapter of Romans
- 7:10Paul says to greet Rufus or Rufus greets
- 7:14you and there is an acknowledgement that
- 7:16he is a faithful member of the church.
- 7:19So there is there's some connection that
- 7:22he's wanting to say that this guy who
- 7:25was pressed into service, his family
- 7:27ended up becoming part of the church.
- 7:29That's likely what's being suggested
- 7:31here.
- 7:33Then they brought him Jesus to the place
- 7:36Goltha,
- 7:38which is translated place of a skull.
- 7:42They tried to give him wine mixed with
- 7:45myrr, but he did not take it. And they
- 7:48crucified him and divided up his
- 7:51garments among themselves, casting lots,
- 7:54for them to decide what each man should
- 7:57take.
- 7:59It was the third hour when they
- 8:01crucified him. The inscription of the
- 8:04charge against him read, "The King of
- 8:08the Jews."
- 8:10They crucified two robbers with him, one
- 8:13on his right and one on his left. And
- 8:17the scripture was fulfilled which says,
- 8:19"And he was numbered with the
- 8:21transgressors."
- 8:23Those passing by were hurling abuse at
- 8:26him, wagging their heads and saying,
- 8:29"Ha, you who are going to destroy the
- 8:33temple and rebuild it in 3 days. Save
- 8:36yourself and come down from the cross."
- 8:40In the same way, the chief priests also
- 8:42along with the scribes were mocking him
- 8:45among themselves and saying, "He saved
- 8:48others. He cannot save himself.
- 8:53Let this Christ, the king of Israel, now
- 8:56come down from the cross, so that we may
- 8:59see and believe."
- 9:02Those who were crucified with him were
- 9:04also insulting him.
- 9:07When the sixth hour came, darkness fell
- 9:10over the whole land until the 9inth
- 9:12hour. At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out
- 9:16with a loud voice, "Eloy, Eloy, Lamak
- 9:20Sabakani,"
- 9:22which is translated, "My God, my God,
- 9:26why have you forsaken me?"
- 9:29He has to experience the agony of
- 9:33separation because that's what judgment
- 9:35is. And that's what he's bearing on our
- 9:38behalf. Judgment is separation away from
- 9:42the presence of the Lord.
- 9:45So even though the Almighty, the divine
- 9:48[clears throat] lived inside of him, as
- 9:51he's dying, that divine spirit cannot
- 9:54die and so it departs him. And when it
- 9:57does, he cries out, "My God, my God."
- 10:00Which literally means, "The God of me,
- 10:02the God of me, why have you left me
- 10:05behind?
- 10:06When some of the bystanders heard it,
- 10:08they began saying, "Behold, he is
- 10:10calling for Elijah." Because Elijah
- 10:13sounds like Elihoo sounds a little bit
- 10:15like Eloy. Eloy.
- 10:18Someone ran and filled a sponge with
- 10:20sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave
- 10:23him a drink, saying, "Let us see whether
- 10:26Elijah will come to take him down."
- 10:29And Jesus uttered a loud cry and
- 10:32breathed his last.
- 10:36And the veil of the temple was torn in
- 10:40two from top to bottom.
- 10:44This is the atonement. This is the
- 10:47caparet.
- 10:49This is the moment where the blood
- 10:53sacrifice that was sprinkled
- 10:56on the ark of covenant behind that veil,
- 11:00now it's been shed. And so that veil is
- 11:03no longer the place, the holy place.
- 11:06That veil is torn.
- 11:09It's over. That form of atonement is
- 11:13done. God will never use it again. His
- 11:16glory and his presence have departed
- 11:18from there forever. That type and shadow
- 11:21is over.
- 11:23And Jesus is entering into the holy
- 11:26place which is heaven itself.
- 11:29And God is symbolizing that now he has
- 11:33ripped away the barrier and we have
- 11:36access by one spirit to one father
- 11:40through the new and living way of his
- 11:43blood.
- 11:45and the veil of the temple was torn in
- 11:47two from top to bottom. When the
- 11:49centurion who was standing right in
- 11:52front of him saw the way he breathed his
- 11:54last, he said, "Truly, this man was the
- 11:59son of God."
- 12:02There were also some women looking on
- 12:04from a distance, among whom were Mary
- 12:06Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James
- 12:09the less, and Joseph and Salem.
- 12:13When he was in Galilee, they used to
- 12:15follow him and minister to him. And
- 12:18there were many other women who came
- 12:20with him to Jerusalem.
- 12:24When evening had already come, because
- 12:26it was the preparation day, that is the
- 12:28day before the Sabbath, Joseph of
- 12:31Arythea,
- 12:33came a prominent member of the council,
- 12:36the Sanhedrin,
- 12:38who himself was waiting for the kingdom
- 12:40of God. and he gathered up courage and
- 12:44went in before Pilate and asked for the
- 12:47body of Jesus.
- 12:50Pilate wondered if he was dead by
- 12:52[music] this time and summoning the
- 12:54centurion, he questioned him as to
- 12:56whether he was already dead.
- 13:00And ascertaining [music] this from the
- 13:02centurion, he granted the body to
- 13:05Joseph.
- 13:07Joseph brought [music] a linen cloth,
- 13:09took him down, wrapped him in the linen
- 13:12[music] cloth, and laid him in a tomb,
- 13:15which had been heuned out in the rock.
- 13:18And he [music] rolled a stone against
- 13:19the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene
- 13:23and Mary, the mother of Joseph, were
- 13:25looking on to see where he was laid.
- 13:32There's a man who's part of the Jewish
- 13:34Senate, [music] the Sanhedrin, the
- 13:37council, and his name is Joseph of
- 13:38Arythea.
- 13:41And he doesn't like what they've done to
- 13:42Jesus. He doesn't like what his own
- 13:44people have done to Jesus. And so at
- 13:47night, he wants to take away the body
- 13:50and show him the respect of a dignified
- 13:53burial.
- 13:55And Mark says it's [music] because he
- 13:57too hadn't given up on the dream of the
- 14:00kingdom of God.
- 14:02He doesn't believe Jesus is the Christ,
- 14:05but he had hoped he might be like
- 14:08Nicodemus.
- 14:10And he puts Jesus in his own tomb to
- 14:14show him the respect of a dignified
- 14:15burial.
- 14:17And Mark [music] wants us to know that
- 14:19Pilate questions whether he's already
- 14:21dead. And he asks the centurion to
- 14:24confirm.
- 14:26This is a detail that is important
- 14:28because the gentile state authorities
- 14:31who have no part in the religious
- 14:33tension, they confirm that Jesus was
- 14:36completely dead. And he takes him and he
- 14:39puts him in the tomb.
