- 0:00Mark 14.
- 0:03Now the Passover and unleavened bread
- 0:06were two days away, and the [music]
- 0:08chief priests and the scribes were
- 0:10seeking how to seize him by stealth and
- 0:13[music] kill him. For they were saying,
- 0:16"Not during the festival, otherwise
- 0:19[music] there might be a riot of the
- 0:21people."
- 0:23While he was in Bethany at the home of
- 0:26Simon the leper and reclining at the
- 0:28table, [music]
- 0:29there came a woman with an alabaster
- 0:31vial of very costly [music] perfume of
- 0:34pure nard. And she broke the vial
- 0:37[music] and poured it over his head.
- 0:41But some were indignantly [music]
- 0:43remarking to one another, "Why has this
- 0:46perfume been wasted?
- 0:49for this perfume might have been sold
- 0:52for over 300 [music]
- 0:54dinari and the money given to the poor
- 0:58and they were scolding her.
- 1:01But Jesus said, "Let her alone. Why do
- 1:05you bother her?
- 1:07She has done a good deed to me.
- 1:11For you always have the poor with you,
- 1:13and whenever you wish, you can do good
- 1:16to them. But you do not always have me.
- 1:21She has done what she could. She has
- 1:23[music] anointed my body beforehand for
- 1:26the burial.
- 1:28Truly I [music] say to you, wherever the
- 1:32gospel is preached in the whole world,
- 1:35what this woman has done will also be
- 1:38spoken of in memory of her.
- 1:42Then Judas Escariat, who was one of the
- 1:4512, went off to the chief priests in
- 1:48order to betray him to them. They were
- 1:51glad when they heard this and promised
- 1:54to give him money. And he began seeking
- 1:57how to betray him at an opportune time.
- 2:04So, we have this scene where Jesus goes
- 2:07to the house of Simon the Pharisee and
- 2:11the leper and he's reclining at the
- 2:16table.
- 2:17And a woman comes in who is likely a
- 2:21prostitute
- 2:24and she brings in this extremely
- 2:27expensive
- 2:29symbol of her sinful life.
- 2:32This is likely something she would have
- 2:34even used to get attention. It's like a
- 2:38perfume.
- 2:40And she brings it in and she breaks it
- 2:43and pours all of it on his head and his
- 2:46feet.
- 2:49And the response from the disciples
- 2:54which we know was primarily Judas
- 2:58is oh this is a poor use of money. This
- 3:02could have been used to serve the poor.
- 3:06But in the other gospels we are told
- 3:08that Judas says this because he was
- 3:12wanting the money for himself.
- 3:15And the lesson is that not every time
- 3:18someone raises concerns about money and
- 3:22not every time those concerns sound like
- 3:26a burden for the poor. Not every time is
- 3:29that the case. Not every time is that a
- 3:31genuine concern. Sometimes there is a
- 3:35selfish motivation. There is an ambition
- 3:39in it. And it is not a coincidence that
- 3:43Mark sandwiches Judas's betrayal
- 3:48of Jesus to the chief priests for money
- 3:52right up against this story of the
- 3:54woman.
- 3:55This was a trigger moment. This was the
- 3:59point where Judas had had enough. Maybe
- 4:03times were tight. Maybe they didn't have
- 4:06enough money. Maybe Judas felt that.
- 4:09Maybe he wasn't trusting God,
- 4:12but for whatever reason, he goes from
- 4:16being offended at the waste of a
- 4:19financial resource to betraying Jesus
- 4:23just like that.
- 4:25And yet he doesn't say, "I'm a thief.
- 4:30I have no faith.
- 4:33I don't trust the way things are going."
- 4:35He says, "I have a burden for the poor."
- 4:38He's a complete fraud. And yet he cloaks
- 4:42his theft, his unbelief, and his
- 4:46betrayal behind a burden for the poor.
- 4:50On the first day of unleavened bread,
- 4:53when the Passover lamb was being
- 4:55[clears throat] sacrificed,
- 4:57his disciples said to him, "Where do you
- 5:00want us to go and prepare for you to eat
- 5:03the Passover?"
- 5:05And he sent two of his disciples and
- 5:07said to them, "Go into the city and a
- 5:10man will meet you carrying a picture of
- 5:12water. Follow him."
- 5:15And wherever he enters, say to the owner
- 5:17of the house, the teacher says, "Where
- 5:21is my guest room in which I may eat the
- 5:24Passover with my disciples?"
- 5:27and he himself will show you a large
- 5:30upper room furnished and ready. Prepare
- 5:34for us there."
- 5:37The disciples went out and came to the
- 5:38city and found it just as he had told
- 5:41them. And they prepared the Passover.
- 5:44When it was evening, he came with the
- 5:47twel.
- 5:49As they were reclining at the table and
- 5:51eating, Jesus said, "Truly I say to you
- 5:55that one of you will betray me, one who
- 5:58is eating with me."
- 6:01They began to be grieved and to say to
- 6:04him one by one, "Surely not I."
- 6:09And he said to them, "It is one of the
- 6:1212, one who dips with me in the bull.
- 6:17For the Son of Man is to go just as it
- 6:20is written of him. But woe to that man
- 6:24by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
- 6:28It would have been good for that man if
- 6:31he had not been born.
- 6:34We're told in the first verse of this
- 6:35chapter that the chief priests and
- 6:39scribes were seeking how to seize Jesus
- 6:42by stealth and kill him.
- 6:47And they were saying we cannot do it
- 6:49during the festival. So it seems to me
- 6:52that Jesus is making public appearances
- 6:56where there is a very large crowd. But
- 6:59the chief priests and haters are not
- 7:02willing to make a move on him in that
- 7:05setting because they are actually afraid
- 7:08that the people will riot against them
- 7:11because the people believe or want to
- 7:14hear from Jesus.
- 7:17Okay. So they say that we want to take
- 7:20him by stealth which means we want to
- 7:23take him secretly at night. So what is
- 7:28likely is that while he would show up in
- 7:32front of everybody, his whereabouts,
- 7:34where he was sleeping, where they were
- 7:36meeting in small groups, these things
- 7:39would have been secret. He would not
- 7:42have made it widely known. Even the way
- 7:45he reserves the upper room for the
- 7:48Passover is kind of cryptic.
- 7:51He sends these two guys in and they meet
- 7:53a man. Maybe the man knows who they are.
- 7:56Maybe Jesus has made arrangements with
- 7:58the man. Maybe he doesn't. Maybe Jesus
- 8:02doesn't even want the man to know. But
- 8:05for whatever reason,
- 8:07the betrayal is going to amount to one
- 8:11of the 12 telling
- 8:14the chief priests where Jesus is at a
- 8:18time when the public does not know. So
- 8:21they wouldn't have known where he was
- 8:23having the Passover. They wouldn't have
- 8:25known where he was going to be praying.
- 8:27It would take someone very close who who
- 8:30knew his movements who was going to
- 8:32relay it to the haters.
- 8:37And he says that it is one of the 12.
- 8:39And the 12 ask, "Is it I?"
- 8:43which shows an incredible humility that
- 8:46all of them are unsure as to whether it
- 8:49is them. This is the first communion
- 8:52service, this celebration of the
- 8:54Passover. And it is showing us that all
- 8:58of us should have this attitude in
- 8:59communion. Lord, show me, show me what I
- 9:03don't know about myself.
- 9:05Show me what could betray you and me.
- 9:09And Jesus answers them and says,
- 9:12"It is one of the 12 and it is one who
- 9:15dips with me
- 9:17in the bowl."
- 9:20And the the language is not it's one of
- 9:24many who dips with me in the bowl. It's
- 9:27it's the only one. It's the one who dips
- 9:30with me in the bowl.
- 9:33So, I see that as suggesting a level of
- 9:37pride and presumption.
- 9:39The other 11 are waiting their turn, and
- 9:43they're deferring to Jesus as he is
- 9:47dipping in the bowl. But one of them has
- 9:50so lost his honor, so lost his reverence
- 9:54that he's got his hand in the bowl at
- 9:56the same time as Jesus. And this is a
- 9:59signal as to the attitude that's living
- 10:01in his heart. Not only is he judging
- 10:04Jesus for how he's managing finances and
- 10:07resources, but he's lost his honor. He's
- 10:11dipping at the same time as the Lord.
- 10:15While they were eating, he took some
- 10:17bread and after a blessing, he broke it
- 10:21and gave it to them and said, "Take it.
- 10:24This is my body."
- 10:27And when he had taken a cup and given
- 10:29thanks, he gave it to them, and they all
- 10:32drank from it. And he said to them,
- 10:36"This is my blood of the covenant, which
- 10:39is poured out for many.
- 10:42Truly, I say to you, I will never again
- 10:44drink of the fruit of the vine until
- 10:47that day when I drink it new in the
- 10:49kingdom of God."
- 10:52After singing a hymn, they went out to
- 10:54the Mount of Olives.
- 10:57So Jesus is instituting communion and
- 10:59he's saying
- 11:01that this bread is a symbol of my body
- 11:05that is going to be broken for you and
- 11:09this cup is a symbol of my blood and
- 11:13it's going to create a new covenant.
- 11:16No longer is it going to be the blood of
- 11:17bulls and goats. No longer is it going
- 11:20to be the covenant of Moses. This is
- 11:24fulfilling what the Lord said through
- 11:25Jeremiah. I will make a new covenant
- 11:27with the house of Israel. And it's a
- 11:30covenant in Christ's blood. He is the
- 11:33lamb. So here we are at the Passover.
- 11:37The Passover was the night when the
- 11:39children of Israel left Egypt. On that
- 11:42very night, the angel of wrath and of
- 11:45judgment visited the camp of Egypt and
- 11:49killed all the firstborn. But on that
- 11:52night, the people of God killed a lamb.
- 11:55And they put the blood of that lamb on
- 11:57their doorposts.
- 11:59And that lamb signaled to the angels of
- 12:02wrath that this house belonged to God.
- 12:06That this house was already atoned for,
- 12:09that their sins had already been
- 12:12reckoned and paid for in the death of
- 12:15that lamb.
- 12:16But that was only a type of the lamb
- 12:19that Jesus would be when his blood was
- 12:22going to be applied to the door of
- 12:25salvation, to the door of our lives, to
- 12:27the house of God, so that the judgment
- 12:31of hell and eternal agony and separation
- 12:34from God would pass over us as we found
- 12:38salvation through his blood. So he holds
- 12:42this and he says, "This is the blood of
- 12:44a new covenant." And this is fulfilling
- 12:48the types and shadows of the old
- 12:50covenant. Jesus is going to make the
- 12:53sacrifice. He's going to suffer the
- 12:57agony that we deserve. God in Christ is
- 13:01going to reconcile the world to himself.
- 13:04He's not going to have us kill an
- 13:06animal. He is going to bear in his body
- 13:10the eternal judgment, the hell in a
- 13:12manner of speaking that we deserved. So
- 13:16that if we would accept him and come
- 13:18into him, be called by his name through
- 13:22faith, then we can have that blood
- 13:25applied to our lives
- 13:28and not receive the judgment, the angel
- 13:30of death that is passing over the camp
- 13:33of Egypt.
- 13:35After singing a hymn, they went out to
- 13:38the Mount of Olives.
- 13:40And Jesus said to them, "You will all
- 13:43fall away because it is written, I will
- 13:47strike down the shepherd, and the sheep
- 13:50shall be scattered."
- 13:53But after I have been raised, I will go
- 13:56ahead of you to Galilee.
- 14:00But Peter said to him, "Even though all
- 14:03may fall away, yet I will not."
- 14:09Peter is loyal. Peter is determined.
- 14:13And Peter is sure of himself.
- 14:18He is determined to prove to Jesus
- 14:23that he has better intentions and a
- 14:26better heart and he is a more loyal
- 14:28friend than the others.
- 14:31But Peter said to him, "Even though all
- 14:33may fall away or stumble, yet I will
- 14:37not." And Jesus said to him, "Truly I
- 14:42say to you that this very night, before
- 14:45a rooster crows twice, you yourself will
- 14:49deny me three times."
- 14:52Jesus is sure that Peter is going to
- 14:55fail because he knows what Peter puts
- 14:58his trust in. Peter puts his trust in in
- 15:02his own strength, in his own flesh.
- 15:06And if Peter could rely on the flesh,
- 15:10he would be loyal.
- 15:12But does he have the faith to rely on
- 15:15the Holy Spirit? No.
- 15:19But Peter kept saying insistently,
- 15:23"Even if I have to die with you, I will
- 15:27not deny you."
- 15:30And they were all saying the same thing
- 15:32also.
- 15:34So the gospel writer Mark is wanting us
- 15:37to know something.
- 15:40The 12, the 11 did not have a lack of
- 15:44good intentions. They did not have a
- 15:47lack of commitment. They did not have a
- 15:50lack of determination and love for
- 15:52Jesus. They had a lack of power. They
- 15:56didn't have power over their own fear of
- 15:58death. Before the trial, they were
- 16:01clear. They were determined.
- 16:04They thought about it. They were warned
- 16:06about it. They were sure they would not
- 16:09enter into this temptation.
- 16:13But their strength
- 16:15was their confidence. And it was going
- 16:18to be insufficient.
- 16:21They came to a place named Gethsemane.
- 16:24And he said to his disciples, "Sit here
- 16:26until I have prayed."
- 16:29And he took with him Peter, James, and
- 16:31John, and began to be very distressed
- 16:32and troubled.
- 16:35Jesus began to be very distressed
- 16:39and troubled.
- 16:42He's in agony.
- 16:46And he said to them, "My soul is deeply
- 16:50grieved to the point of death.
- 16:54Remain here and keep watch."
- 16:58He feels
- 16:59the anguish. He feels the threat. And he
- 17:04feels it more keenly than any human
- 17:06being because he's feeling it for all
- 17:09human beings.
- 17:13And he's asking them, "Remain here and
- 17:16keep watch."
- 17:18He senses that the betrayal is going to
- 17:21be Judas slipping away to tell the chief
- 17:24priests and and scribes where he's
- 17:27praying.
- 17:29And he's saying, "Keep watch."
- 17:32And he went a little beyond them.
- 17:35And that's the whole story right there.
- 17:39He went beyond them, beyond their
- 17:41strength, beyond their fears, beyond
- 17:44their flesh, beyond their sorrow.
- 17:49And he went a little beyond them and
- 17:51fell to the ground and began to pray
- 17:53that if it were possible, the hour might
- 17:56pass him by.
- 17:58And he was saying, "Aba, Father, all
- 18:03things are possible for you.
- 18:06Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I
- 18:10will, but what you will.
- 18:13Aba is like daddy.
- 18:17It's the Hebrew word for your father,
- 18:20but it's an affectionate term. It's not
- 18:22like the word father. It's more like the
- 18:24word daddy. Aba, father. All things are
- 18:28possible for you. Remove this cup. This
- 18:32is the cup of total surrender.
- 18:36This is the cup of of willingly drinking
- 18:40God's way even when you know it's going
- 18:43to cost you your life.
- 18:45It's almost like drinking poison.
- 18:48It's the total surrender of yourself.
- 18:53And he came and found them sleeping and
- 18:57he said to Peter, Peter was the one who
- 19:00was most determined to prove how loyal
- 19:02he was. So he says to Peter, "Simon,
- 19:06are you asleep?
- 19:09Could you not keep watch for one hour?"
- 19:13He wants Simon to face that he doesn't
- 19:16have the power.
- 19:19Simon, can you admit that you weren't
- 19:22able to be faithful even for one hour?
- 19:28Keep watching and praying that you may
- 19:31not come into temptation.
- 19:33The spirit is willing, but the flesh is
- 19:35weak.
- 19:37You want to do God's will. You want to
- 19:40do what's right. You want to help, but
- 19:43you don't have the power. Your flesh is
- 19:45weak.
- 19:48And again, he went away and prayed,
- 19:50saying the same words.
- 19:52And again, he came and found them
- 19:55sleeping.
- 19:56for their eyes were very heavy and they
- 20:00did not know what to answer him.
- 20:04This is a picture of human power to be
- 20:08faithful without the power of the Holy
- 20:11Spirit. It's not possible.
- 20:16And he came to them a third time and
- 20:18said to them, "Are you still sleeping
- 20:21and resting?
- 20:23It is enough. The hour has come. Behold,
- 20:27the Son of Man is being betrayed into
- 20:29the hands of sinners. Get up. Let us be
- 20:33going. Behold, the one who betrays me is
- 20:36at hand.
- 20:40So when it comes to travail in the
- 20:43spirit, Peter is asleep.
- 20:47But when it comes to relying on the
- 20:49flesh, Peter is going to be very active.
- 20:54Immediately, while he was still
- 20:56speaking, Judas, one of the twel, came
- 20:59up accompanied by a crowd with swords
- 21:02and clubs,
- 21:04who were from the chief priests and the
- 21:06scribes and the elders.
- 21:10And he who was betraying him had given
- 21:13them a signal saying, "Whomever I kiss,
- 21:16he is the one. Seize him and lead him
- 21:20away under guard."
- 21:23After coming, Judas immediately went to
- 21:25him, saying, "Rabbi,"
- 21:28and kissed him.
- 21:30They laid hands on him and seized him.
- 21:33But one of those who stood by
- 21:36drew his sword, Peter,
- 21:40and struck the slave of the high priest
- 21:42and cut off his ear.
- 21:45And Jesus said to them, "Have you come
- 21:48out with swords and clubs to arrest me
- 21:52as you would against a robber?"
- 21:56Peter's asleep when it's time to pray,
- 21:59but Peter's alive if he can fight in the
- 22:02flesh.
- 22:03and he would have fought to the bloody
- 22:05end if he could have leaned on the
- 22:07flesh. But he did not have the faith to
- 22:10trust in the way in the power in the
- 22:14will of the father. He did not have the
- 22:16relationship with aba father that Jesus
- 22:20had. So Jesus says to those arresting
- 22:23him, "Have you come out with swords and
- 22:26clubs to arrest me as you would against
- 22:28a robber?
- 22:30Every day I was with you in the temple
- 22:33teaching and you did not seize me. But
- 22:36this has taken place to fulfill the
- 22:38scriptures.
- 22:41And they all left him and fled.
- 22:44The disciples. They fled.
- 22:49A young man was following him wearing
- 22:52nothing but a linen sheet over his naked
- 22:54body. And they seized him. But he pulled
- 22:59free of the linen sheet and escaped
- 23:01naked.
- 23:03Some people think that was Mark because
- 23:06it doesn't appear in any of the other
- 23:07stories.
- 23:09So, it may have been Mark as a young boy
- 23:12following along. And it just shows how
- 23:15terrified everybody was.
- 23:18He would rather run away naked
- 23:21than be caught with the Lord as alone
- 23:25he's marched away under arrest.
- 23:30They led Jesus away to the high priests
- 23:33and the chief priests and the elders and
- 23:36the scribes gathered together. Peter
- 23:39followed him at a distance
- 23:43right into the courtyard of the high
- 23:45priest and he was sitting with the
- 23:47officers and warming himself at the
- 23:49fire.
- 23:51Peter can't give up. He's promised that
- 23:54he's going to stay with him and his
- 23:56loyalty pushes him to to follow. He gets
- 23:59all the way into the courtyard of
- 24:01Caiaphas.
- 24:04Now, the chief priests and the whole
- 24:05council kept trying to obtain testimony
- 24:08against Jesus to put him to death, and
- 24:11they were not finding any.
- 24:14They're trying to get people to testify
- 24:16against him so that they can charge him
- 24:18on the testimony of multiple witnesses,
- 24:21[snorts] but they could not find any.
- 24:23For many were giving false testimony
- 24:25against him, but their testimony was not
- 24:27consistent.
- 24:30Some stood up and began to give false
- 24:32testimony against him, saying, "We heard
- 24:34him say, I will destroy this temple made
- 24:37with hands, and in 3 days I will build
- 24:39another made without hands."
- 24:43Not even in this respect was their
- 24:45testimony consistent.
- 24:47Do you recognize what they're saying?
- 24:50Like all liars and slanderers, they are
- 24:53saying something that has a ring
- 24:57of truth to it.
- 24:59because he said you will destroy this
- 25:02temple and in three days I will build it
- 25:05back and he was speaking about his own
- 25:08body. John says he did not say I will
- 25:12destroy this temple but this is how
- 25:16liars twist the truth
- 25:19so that the unscrupulous or the naive
- 25:22and the ignorant can say yeah I think I
- 25:25remember that that's what was said. No,
- 25:27that is not at all what was said. Those
- 25:30words were used, but you have scrambled
- 25:32them up into a lie.
- 25:36The high priest stood up and came
- 25:38forward and questioned Jesus, saying,
- 25:41"Do you not answer?
- 25:44What is it that these men are testifying
- 25:46against you?" So, they're all telling
- 25:49their lies, and he's not answering.
- 25:52He's not even saying a word. He's
- 25:54letting them contradict themselves.
- 25:57And the high priest is angry that Jesus
- 26:00is not stirred and riled up by the false
- 26:03accusation.
- 26:05So he says, "Do you not answer?
- 26:08What is this that they're saying against
- 26:09you?" But he kept silent and did not
- 26:12answer. Again, the high priest was
- 26:14questioning him and saying to him, "Are
- 26:17you
- 26:19the Christ?
- 26:23Are you the Messiah?
- 26:26the son of the blessed one.
- 26:31And Jesus said, "I am, and you shall see
- 26:35the son of man sitting at the right hand
- 26:37of power and coming with the clouds of
- 26:40heaven."
- 26:44The chief priest is putting him under
- 26:45oath. He's forcing him to speak. And
- 26:49Jesus acknowledges.
- 26:52Tearing his clothes, the high priest
- 26:55said, "What further need do we have of
- 26:58witnesses?
- 27:00You have heard the blasphemy.
- 27:04How does it seem to you?" And they all
- 27:07condemned him to be deserving of death
- 27:13because he claimed to be the son of God.
- 27:16Because he claimed to be
- 27:20the one, the son of the blessed one, the
- 27:23Messiah, the anointed one.
- 27:27Some began to spit at him and to
- 27:31blindfold him and to beat him with their
- 27:34fists and to say to him, "Prophesy."
- 27:39And the officers received him with slaps
- 27:43in the face.
- 27:47You see, Jesus was in the garden praying
- 27:51until he sweat great drops of blood. And
- 27:55what he was praying for was the grace to
- 27:57not enter into temptation.
- 28:01And this shows him
- 28:04avoiding that temptation.
- 28:07He does not respond in the way his
- 28:11enemies predicted.
- 28:14He does not defend himself.
- 28:17He is not afraid.
- 28:19He does not punch back.
- 28:23He does not spit back.
- 28:27He is not the puppet on the strings of
- 28:31their intimidation.
- 28:34He is completely under the power of of
- 28:39his father.
- 28:42As Peter was below in the courtyard, one
- 28:45of the servant girls of the high priest
- 28:47came and seeing Peter warming himself,
- 28:51she looked at him and said, "You were
- 28:54also with Jesus the Nazarene."
- 28:58But he denied it,
- 29:01saying, "I neither know nor understand
- 29:05what you are talking about. The threat
- 29:08here is association. [clears throat]
- 29:11Is Peter going to be associated
- 29:14with the mocked, with the ridiculed,
- 29:18with the hated and rejected and
- 29:21condemned Christ.
- 29:23He doesn't want to be connected.
- 29:26And she's trying to connect him. I think
- 29:28you belong with him. And he doesn't want
- 29:31anything to do with it.
- 29:35I neither know nor understand what you
- 29:37are talking about.
- 29:41And he went out into the porch. The
- 29:44servant girl saw him and began once more
- 29:47to say to the bystanders, "This is one
- 29:50of them."
- 29:53But again he denied it.
- 29:56And after a little while the bystanders
- 29:58were again saying to Peter, "Surely you
- 30:01are one of them. You are a Galilean too.
- 30:05But he began to curse and swear, I do
- 30:08not know this man.
- 30:12I do not know this man you are talking
- 30:15about.
- 30:17Immediately a rooster crowed a second
- 30:20time.
- 30:22And Peter remembered how Jesus had made
- 30:25the remark to him, "Before a rooster
- 30:28crows twice, you will deny me three
- 30:30times."
- 30:32And he began to weep.
- 30:38I've been to Caiaphas's house.
- 30:41I've seen the hole in the rock where
- 30:45they would lower the prisoners down.
- 30:48I've seen the the cells
- 30:51with the holes in the rock where they
- 30:54would tie the prisoner with his hands
- 30:57spread out and his feet spread out and
- 31:00beat him with a whip called the cat of
- 31:03nine tales.
- 31:05I've seen the very place where Jesus was
- 31:09arrested and held overnight. And I
- 31:12remember
- 31:14coming out of that place and imagining
- 31:18his hands and wrists tied in those
- 31:22in those positions.
- 31:25And we came out on the porch on the
- 31:28patio outside Caiaphas's house.
- 31:31And as we stood there, there was a
- 31:34plaque. And I said to our companions, I
- 31:37said, "This is the place where Peter
- 31:40denied Jesus." And right at [music] that
- 31:43moment, the rooster crowed. An actual
- 31:46rooster down in the valley crowed.
- 31:51And you know, roosters crow all the
- 31:52time. There was nothing special about
- 31:55that. But sometimes very ordinary events
- 31:59take on very extraordinary impact and
- 32:02meaning when God has pointed to them as
- 32:06markers of a change that is taking place
- 32:09in you.
- 32:12Jesus was not going to be disappointed
- 32:15by Peter's betrayal because he loved
- 32:18Peter and he knew that he was [music]
- 32:20too weak to be faithful.
- 32:24But he wanted Peter to know that.
- 32:28And when Peter learned not to trust in
- 32:30himself, that was actually progress.
- 32:34That was actually a step of repentance
- 32:38that would make way for Peter to receive
- 32:40a new and greater outpouring of power on
- 32:44the day of Pentecost. One day, the man
- 32:47who cowed and denied the Lord before a
- 32:51servant girl would stand before a
- 32:53multitude and acknowledge that he
- 32:56belonged with them, with Jesus.
- 32:59But he didn't have that power yet. And
- 33:02so when the rooster crows, he goes out
- 33:05and he begins to weep.
- 33:10The literal says,
- 33:12"When he remembered this,
- 33:15rushing out, he began weeping."
- 33:19When the rooster crowed, Peter is
- 33:21rushing from the courtyard, sobbing and
- 33:24weeping. Oh God, who am I? What is wrong
- 33:29with me? Why can I not live up to my
- 33:33commitments? Why have I betrayed you?
- 33:38And this is an agony, but it's also the
- 33:41beginning of hope. Because as confidence
- 33:45collapses [music] in himself, confidence
- 33:48can be born in Christ Jesus. [music]
